In this week's Especially for Athletes podcast, Shad Martin and Dustin Smith tackle one of the greatest challenges facing youth sports today: patience. Too often athletes are labeled too early as stars or failures before their bodies, confidence, and abilities have fully developed. Through powerful insights about development, confidence, work ethic, and a moving story from Cameron Stewart about his son Tyson, Shad and Dustin remind parents, coaches, and athletes that development is not linear and that some of the greatest athletes are simply late bloomers. This episode is a must-listen for anyone tempted to judge potential too quickly.Key Takeaways1. Don't Label Athletes Too EarlyChildren develop physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially at different rates. Success—or struggle—at age 10 does not predict success at age 18.2. Puberty Changes EverythingMany athletes who appear average before puberty become exceptional later as their bodies and confidence develop.3. Focus on Growth, Not Playing TimeInstead of demanding opportunities, ask: "What do I need to do to improve?" Growth should always come before entitlement.4. Let Kids ExploreYoung athletes should be allowed to try different sports and activities until they discover where their talents and passions align.5. Love of the Game MattersIf a child still loves a sport, don't pull them away simply because they aren't currently the best player.6. Struggle Builds Valuable SkillsAthletes who must work for opportunities often develop resilience, work ethic, and perseverance that become major advantages later.7. There Are Lessons on the BenchAthletes learn just as much from fighting for playing time as they do from standing on the podium.00:32:17 - Introduction: Why Youth Sports Needs More Patience00:33:37 - The Danger of Labeling Kids Too Early00:36:27 - Why Puberty Changes Everything00:37:52 - Cameron Stewart's Story About His Son Tyson00:38:57 - How Parents Should Approach Playing Time Conversations00:41:42 - Why Late Bloomers Matter00:42:37 - When Should Kids Quit a Sport?00:45:02 - Family Rules About Commitment and Finishing Seasons00:46:02 - James Clear's "Explore vs. Exploit" Principle00:47:27 - Finding Your Lane Through Exploration00:48:17 - Final Advice for Parents and Coaches00:49:37 - Lessons Learned from Cameron Stewart's Example00:50:07 - Eyes Up, Do the Work⸻Especially for Athletes: Website: https://e4a.org Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EspeciallyForAthletes/ X: https://x.com/E4Afamily Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/especiallyforathletes/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmbWc7diAvstLMfjBL-bMMQJoin the conversation using #E4APodcast⸻Credits: Hosted by Dustin SmithProduced by E4A and IMAGINATE STUDIO

Today's America's Work Force Union Podcast brings two major stories together in one conversation-packed episode. First, UPTE-CWA Local 9119 President Dan Russell discusses the union's landmark organizing win — 2,100 University of California tech workers added to the bargaining unit, making UPTE the largest tech worker bargaining unit in the country at 8,400 members. Russell breaks down the subtle union avoidance strategy that kept those workers out for years, how high-visibility strike action brought them in and why getting organized before a mass AI rollout is now the union's most urgent priority. Then, Ohio Federation of Teachers President Melissa Cropper delivers one of her most packed monthly updates yet — covering AFT's bold Devices Down, Eyes Up vision for public schools, a bipartisan Ohio voucher accountability bill targeting a program that now exceeds one billion dollars annually with almost no oversight and a wave of five first contract victories, including the first KIPP charter school contract in the country. She also gives a confident update on the Columbus Metropolitan Library organizing election now underway. Eyes Up: Keeping Christ at the Center | 1 Corinthians 2:2 In a world driven by headlines, outrage, elections, algorithms, and endless notifications, how can Christians stay focused on what matters most? In this message from 1 Corinthians 2:2, Preaching Minister Gordon Dabbs, Ph.D., challenges us to lift our eyes above the noise and fix our gaze on Jesus Christ and Him crucified. The issues of our day matter—but they are not ultimate. When the church lets the news cycle set the agenda, we become reactive. When Jesus sets the agenda, we become rooted. Discover why: ✅ The church is called to be an embassy of Heaven ✅ Our primary allegiance belongs to Christ alone ✅ Prayer is more powerful than outrage ✅ Lament is a faithful response to a broken world ✅ The cross reminds us who our true enemy is—and who it isn't Whether you're weary from politics, discouraged by current events, or simply longing for a deeper focus on Jesus, this message offers a timely reminder: Eyes up. Christ is still on the throne. #JesusChrist #ChristianSermon #Prestoncrest #ChurchOfChrist #FaithOverFear #EyesUp #GospelCentered #ChristianLiving #1Corinthians2 #KingdomOfGod #BiblicalTeaching #DallasChurch #HopeInChrist #FollowingJesus #ChristianEncouragementSubscribe to PRESTONCREST - with Gordon Dabbs on Soundwise

-California has passed three new bills designed to boost privacy for internet users, governor Gavin Newsom's office announced. The biggest one, AB 566, builds on a 2018 law by requiring web browsers to let users universally opt-out of allowing third parties to sell their data. -Apple has removed Eyes Up, an app that collects and archives videos of Immigration Customs and Enforcement arrests, 404 Media reports. The app's removal follows similar action taken against ICEBlock last week, an app that tracks ICE activity in an attempt to offer real-time alerts of when and where arrests are happening. Unlike ICEBlock, though, Eyes Up's main purpose is to serve as an archive, not a tool for eluding government agents. -Verizon is buying the smaller broadband carrier Starry for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition is expected to close by the first quarter of 2026, but is subject to FCC approval. If you've ever assumed that being near your child at the pool meant they were safe, this episode might just change the way you see water forever. I'm joined by Lindsay Mondick, Director of Aquatic Safety for the YMCA of the USA and a lifelong advocate for drowning prevention. We talk about what drowning really looks like (spoiler: it's not like the movies), why so many tragic incidents happen with adults present, and how something as simple as putting your phone down can be the difference between life and death. She joins me to discuss: • Why drowning is quick, silent, and often missed even with supervision nearby • The “Phones Down, Eyes Up” campaign and what every caregiver needs to know • How to build layers of water safety from swim lessons to life jackets to water watchers Whether you're a pool regular, weekend beachgoer, or backyard splash pad fan—this conversation is a must-listen for every parent this summer. Hall of Fame point guard Steve Nash said it best: “The process is what wins.” In this episode of the Especially for Athletes podcast, we unpack why process over outcome is more than just a motivational phrase—it’s a way of life for elite athletes and strong individuals. Dustin and Chad reflect on lessons from Steve Nash, bestselling author James Clear (Atomic Habits), and past podcast guests like Brennan Schooler, Ally Gomm, and Justin Su’a to explore what it really means to stack hours, build discipline, and compete even when no one is watching. Highlight Moments: Why trusting the process builds long-term success—even after tough losses. James Clear’s take on identity-based habits: “Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.” How developing a consistent process leads to surprising victories—in sports and in life. Whether you’re an athlete, coach, or parent, this episode will help you rethink what it means to win. Stick to the process. Trust the journey. Eyes Up. Do the Work. In this episode of the Especially for Athletes podcast, Dustin and Shad break down a powerful interview with NBA legend Charles Barkley that covers anger, blame, and the moment Barkley decided to stop playing with bitterness and start playing for the right reasons. Barkley shares a raw and honest story about how unresolved anger and the desire to “prove people wrong” nearly defined his career—and how one moment of reflection helped him shift his mindset. Dustin and Shad reflect on what it means to “play with an edge” versus “playing on the edge,” and how athletes, parents, and coaches alike can learn from Barkley’s hard-earned wisdom. Key Takeaways: Be 100% Responsible – “She didn’t flunk you. You flunked you.” Barkley’s turning point came when he finally took ownership of his choices. Playing With an Edge vs. On the Edge – Passion and intensity are great. But if they’re fueled by hate, it’s only a matter of time before you fall. Pre-decide Your Lines – Athletes and parents alike need to know their personal limits before competition starts to avoid moments they’ll regret. Competing Without Contempt – Proving others wrong might be motivating—but don’t let bitterness steal your joy or define your character. The Power of Maturity – Barkley’s journey reminds us that true greatness isn’t just about skill—it’s about growth, humility, and self-awareness. Whether you’re an athlete, coach, or parent, this episode is a reminder to stay grounded, play with purpose, and keep your Eyes Up and Do the Work—for the right reasons. How do we keep our eyes up and trusting God when the pain of life seems unrelenting? Why is it so important to remind ourselves of God's goodness especially in those moments of greatest heartache? For author, pastor and speaker Alexandra Hoover, navigating a lifetime of difficulty and trauma as a child and then experiencing the loss of her brother as an adult could have kept her from experiencing God's care and comfort, but instead, it led her to it. As she began to look back at all the moments in which God had showed up for her throughout her life, she was able to see points of remembrance of God's faithfulness, Ebenezer stones as Scripture calls them. It was in those places that she found herself continually returning to as new heartaches and challenges came her way. In her book Eyes Up: How to Trust God's Heart by Tracing His Hand, she helps readers learn how to find those similar moments in their own lives. In this conversation, Aubrey sits down with Alexandra and discusses the power of discipleship in showing young believers a faith filled life, why it is important to pay attention to the ways God has been faithful throughout our days, and how we can begin to surrender and learn to live loved, especially in our pain. If you find it hard to remember God's goodness in your suffering, know that you are not alone. This episode will encourage you to keep looking back so that you can look up and move forward through whatever struggles and hardships life throws at you.
