Pads are on as Fall camp is ramping up as FSU Football is only 24 days away from their first game against Duquesne and the fellas here at Locked On Seminoles, your favorite daily Florida State Seminoles sports podcast break down what they're hearing from the practice field.  Today, Max and Drake discuss the optimism emerging from the Quarterback room as AJ Duffy is starting to show some comfortability and Tate Rodemaker is showing signs of being a valid option moving forward. Is the hype real or ware the fellas simply onw in prove it mode when it comes to the QBs. Next, while true freshman are permitted to make an impact, it seems that Azaryeah Thomas is emerging as a legitimate contender to push for snaps this coming season as it appears Coach Marcus Woodson made a late signing day steal picking up the kid from Niceville Florida.  Lastly, linebacker has been a room that Florida State hasn't had true depth since the days of Matthew Thomas and Terrence Smith. Now, With Kalen DeLoach and Tatum Bethune leading the way, can DJ Lundy, no with the pressure off, solidify himself as a solid reserve or even push forward to make big strides and be in a position to succeed into 2023? Max, Drake, and Dave each offer one key statistic that hampered FSU in 2021, and explain why changing that statistic is so important to the Seminoles' success in 2022. Dave explains why the ‘Noles, who finished 99th in pass attempts last season, must simply throw the ball more with Jordan Travis (spoiler alert: they finished 3-1 in games where Travis attempted 25+ passes). Drake explains why the Florida State receiving corps needs to be much better at getting separation against man coverage, after ranking outside the top-100 in 2021. And Max explains why FSU's average starting field position, among the bottom 4 nationally last season, must change drastically if the 2022 campaign is to be a success. "Depth Pieces": What is FSU's recruiting strategy under Norvell and Fall Camp showing Quality Roster Depth for 2022

Fall camp at Florida State is already in full swing and the fellas here at Locked on Seminoles, your favorite daily Florida State Seminoles sports podcast, are back in season with their 5 days a week worth of content and kicking things back off with our mandatory mailbag Monday.  Today, Drake and Max are here to answer the questions from you the listener. First off, they discuss the recruiting when it comes to the skill positions and in particular the Quarterback. The guys wrestle with whether or not a blue chip wide receive would come here? Why that may be changing with the visits of players such as Hykeem Williams and Jalen Brown? Most importantly, how integral is AJ Duffy to the future of this program? Next, fellas talk about the recruiting strategy/geographical footprint being employed by Norvell and company. Seemingly striking out on Florida prospects more often than not, what do the fellas think should happen moving forward. Does Max want to employ purely an approach to the regions around Tallahassee extending into Georgia? How do we stretch out into these recurring battlegrounds and what is really going down in Miami with the Hurricanes recent recruiting success? Lastly, the dynamic duo talk about the depth of this team across the board. How finally entering into year 3 under Mike Norvell that this will be his deepest team heading into a college football. Quite possibly a position group that may turn heads despite the lack of scholarship athletes: it may just be the Quarterbacks anchored by Jordan Travis and supported by both AJ Duffy and Tate Rodemaker.  As always, we here at Locked On Seminoles want to thank each and every single one of you for making us your first listen each and every single day and all of your love and support. With this being the first camp in his career where he is in the driver's seat when it comes ot the starting job, what will that do for Jordan Travis' development during what many be the most important fall camp of Mike Norvell's FSU career?  While Jordan Travis is the focal point of the offense, what abut the weapons around him? Is Cam McDonald gone be a focal point of the offense? Will Mycah Pittman and Johnny Wilson be solid options as they come in form Oregon and Arizona State respectively? Then on the defensive side of the ball, do we need to hear more about these young defensive backs led by Omarion Cooper and Kevin Knowles and can Azaryeah Thomas breakthrough into the rotation a true freshman and will this defensive line live up to their elite billing as Fabien Lovett is a man on a mission headed to 2022.  Lastly, we wrap up with some hot takes as it is Max's turn to give his opinion. Florida State Conference Realignment Myth Busting. How FSU Can Close the Revenue Gap if Stuck in the ACC?

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 25, 2022 38:56

As things stand, FSU is stuck in the ACC until 2036. There are many theories circulating about how the Seminoles could leave for the Big 10 or the SEC. Most of these are based on pure speculation and wishful thinking. In what is hopefully the final conference realignment episode of the offseason, Max and Dave play "Mythbusters" with the various exit strategies that have been raised in the Locked On Seminoles Mailbag this past week. Max explains why unequal revenue sharing could be a short-term band-aide to keep the top schools in the ACC competitive. The two discuss why adding more teams to the ACC does not help Florida State leave the conference. Addressing expansion, Max and Dave discuss how many schools could add more revenue to the ACC than they would take thus being a net addition to the conference. Unfortunately, there aren't many. Finally, they examine the jailbreak strategy discussing if enough ACC schools could find profitable landing spots in other conferences to make a mass exodus feasible. The Florida State Seminoles have suffered yet another QB decommitment. After Sam Howell, Luke Altmeyer, Nicco Marchiol, and others, the Noles were hoping to not get hurt again. Unfortunately, four-star QB recruit Chris Parson made the FSU faithful's fears a reality. Chris Parson had expressed to staff that he wanted to be the only quarterback on Mike Norvell and Co's recruiting board and was unhappy when offers were extended to Brock Glenn and Ricky Collins. The coaches felt that one QB couldn't fill their need for depth in the position group and the partnership between Parson and FSU failed to launch. Fortunately, this news comes in the same week as top 150 prospect, four-star offensive tackle, Lucas Simmons announced his commitment to Florida State. Lucas is a hulking 6'7, 300lb big man with a unique brand of athleticism developed by him growing up in Europe. The son of Able Simmons, former University of Oklahoma offensive lineman, Lucas is a huge addition for the 2023 and another feather in the cap of Offensive Line Coach Alex Atkins. Coach Atkins continues to transform the OL room from FSU's greatest liability to a legitimate strength of the program. Finally, Max is joined by new correspondent Hunter Steele to discuss Lucas Simmons, Johnny Wilson and the rest of the wide receiver room, and give his impression from campus of how winning on the field can swing recruiting moment. They also talk about how much weight they put into verbal commitments in the wake of the notable signing day flips Florida State has experienced. Further on, the fellas have All-ACC representation on both sides of the ball with some familiar faces and even a representative form the special teams unit, I know Dave was as shocked as we were when special teams got a shout out. Dave explains why Alex Mastromanno may actually be potentially the most game changing punter in the conference, why he is pleasantly surprised to see Oregon Transfer Mycah Pittman on the list and who he thinks was not only a surprising snub, but someone he thinks could play themselves onto the list at season's end.  Wrapping up today's show the fellas look towards the strongest position groups on the team as well as the position group that may be the most surprising. Why does Drake think that the big fellas in the trenches may shock some and actually potentially be in the top of the conference with their play, why both of the guys feel the running backs are going to run up and down on their opponents and why Dave is going out on a limb and stating this is finally the year that the linebackers show us something.  All this segues great into what needs to happen around Jordan Travis for him to hit that strangely daunting, but truly attainable 3000+pasing yards season. The guys break down what this commitment means for Florida State and discuss Coach Odell Haggins' future. Next, Max and Dave talk about another recruit from recently promoted to 3-star Quindarrius Jones. Jones is an athlete that projects to play defensive back in college. This begs the question, will money be all that matters in the new landscape of college football or can FSU still compete with brand power and prestige? Finally, they discuss Miami being under investigation by the NCAA. Seeing as the Big Ten and the SEC are inking new TV deals and the revenues of each that are leaking showcase around $100 million, we play the fun hypothetical of moving FSU to a different conference. So we asked each other; 1. What conference would you WANT to see Florida State football compete in; and 2. Is the big bad SEC as surefire of an answer as we want it to be and Is the Big 12 even a thing anymore?  To wrap up today's show, the gang talks another NCAA potential ruling. Max and Drake pose the question: what would this mean for FSU if the ACC got rid of the two-division system. This segues into a discussion of whether other conferences would benefit from this and how this will play out as there is a push to expand the playoff. Next, after one of Max's greatest dad jokes of all time, the guys look at Florida State's schedule for 2022. Should FSU Football Beat LSU in 2022? Will Sending Five Transfers to NFL Help Mike Norvell Recruit?

Play Episode Listen Later May 4, 2022 30:41

The LSU Tigers sent ten players to the NFL this past weekend, the Bayou Bengals have lost 31 players to the draft since their 2019 championship, and they are in head coach Brian Kelly's inaugural season. Considering all of that, should the Seminoles be considered an underdog when Florida State takes on LSU in New Orleans this fall? Max and Dave ponder the question and come to the conclusion that the Noles should have a great chance to come back to Tallahassee with a victory. Further, what does a win over LSU mean for the national perception of the program? Will the casual fan care that LSU is in a slump or will FSU get automatic street cred for beating the Tigers? Next, Max and Dave look at the group of players FSU sent to the NFL this past weekend. They are disappointed by only having one player drafted. However, they do acknowledge that all five players were transfers and discuss if this should increase Mike Norvell's ability to recruit high-caliber transfer talent. One of the nation's top receivers, Pitt Panthers' Jordan Addison, is rumored to be heading to USC for a massive payday. Many fans and commentators, including the Florida State faithful, are starting to worry that NIL might spell the end of college football as we know it. Max and Drake do not agree. However, the current NIL landscape is far from perfect. The guys discuss why the courting of Jordan Addison feels different than other transfer activity to date. They then discuss if the solution is more regulation or if the market will self-correct. Max also poses the question of how fair this system is to smaller schools and if more should be done to protect parity. However, the guys ultimately conclude that there is work to be done but college football will not die at the hands of NIL and the transfer portal. Next, Max and Drake discuss Florida State's lackluster draft day showing. Will this make things more difficult for Mike Norvell and Co on the recruiting trail? or is this simply a meaningless data point? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

He asks Drake, and listeners feel free to chime in down at the comments below, what would be the surprising factor that lands this team at the 9 win mark and what stifles them onto the 6-win mark. Florida State Football suffered another major letdown on the recruiting trail when five-star offensive tackle transfer Amarius Mims decided to stay at Georgia following a hastily concluded official visit to FSU. Should this be viewed as another loss for Mike Norvell and his staff or should this be chalked up to them being victims of circumstances beyond their control? Regardless, it isn't all negative. Max and Drake talk through how the act of getting Mims on campus could be seen as a signal that the people around the Seminoles program are willing and able to step up to the NIL plate when needed. Could this have a positive residual effect with other big-time recruits? Next, the guys get more theoretical in discussing the place of FSU football in the national landscape. Is Florida State viewed as a USC in that they are viewed as being one or two moves away from being back on top? Has too much time passed and the outside factors become too challenging to the point that FSU is seen as a Nebraska destined to never return to its former glory? Florida State Football has been on the wrong side of winnable games the past few seasons. Now, is 2022 the seasons that the college football program can have some upsets of their own. Join the gang today on Locked On Seminoles, your favorite Florida State Seminoles podcast to see where the guys land on these questions. Drake and Dave are running the show today and lead it off with which games they view on the schedule as some "stole wins". Why does Drake feel that Norvell and company can march up into Louisville and stun Heisman sleeper Malik Cunningham under the Friday Night Lights. Does Dave view Tyler Van Dyke is an actual threat to the ACC or will he suffer a sophomore slump when the Hard Rock hosts the biggest rivalry in colleges sports? Most importantly, are potentially ranked squads LSU and Clemson going to drop their first game to Florida State in so many seasons? Next, unfortunately Dave, the conductor of today's experiment, has to take us to games that are potentially traps for Jordan Travis over the season. Does a healthy Phil Jurkovec give the fanbase pause for concern when the Boston College Eagles come to town? Even though they have lost some weapons, Dave Doreen and the NC State Wolfpack may pose a greater threat than ever with Devin Leary, Cory Durden and Cyrus Fagan returning. And lastly, out of Syracuse, Georgia Tech and Louisiana-Lafayette, is another inexcusable loss on the horizon for this Seminoles squad?  To wrap up today's show, Drake has the floor and decides to let the people know what has been troubling him. With the QB room under a microscope over the past few seasons & the lack of transfer QB coming into the fold, is there truly a scenario where AJ Duffy is starting at any point during the season, regardless of Jordan Travis' status. Is this solely based on the potential of the 4-star freshman, or is it simply a case study in what Norvell has shown in the past when managing his QB room.  As always, thanks for making Locked On Seminoles your first listen each and every day.
