HOW TO TEACH OUR CHILD TO SAY "NO"? Learning to say no has valuable repercussions in many facets of our children's lives: For protection: When you think about learning to say no, the first thing that may come to mind is your child's personal safety. We need to teach kids to say no if their wellbeing or security is threatened in any way. In the case of attempted physical or sexual abuse, repeatedly saying, “No!”' coupled with protective actions such as kicking, screaming, yelling for help, etc. is vitally important. Children need to know it is never permissible for someone to touch them in a way that makes them uncomfortable, and saying no is their first defense. To maintain identity: We are asked to do many things in life, some good, some not so good. Some activities may interest us, some may not. By teaching children to say no it allows them to regulate their own actions, define personal preferences and adhere to their own opinions. To develop a positive self-image. The ability to respectfully and confidently stand up for oneself contributes to good self-esteem. Saying no is also an assertive tool that helps to develop strength and independence. There are many things you can do to help your child as he or she learns to say no: Be open to their opinions. If our children can express their differing opinions to us in courteous ways and we give them positive feedback, it teaches them how to share their thoughts with confidence and respect. Demonstrate non-verbal communication skills. Model good non-verbal communication skills such as maintaining eye contact and using appropriate body language that matches the spoken language. Explain that a simple no may not always be sufficient. Teach your child about providing an explanation when they say no. For example, “No, I'm not going to the game after school because I have a big test tomorrow and I need to study.” Let them know that sometimes repetition is necessary. When it comes to peer pressure, saying no once will not always do the trick. Children who are willing to say no a number of times and in a number of ways send the message that they will stand firm in their decisions. Explain that saying no is not the same as rejection. Turning down a request is not the same as rejecting a person. Reassure your child that conflicting interests and differences of opinion are a part of human relationships. By teaching your children to say no and mean it, they will be able to face life with confidence, independence and self-worth. Children are a parent's most-valuable asset and every parent dreams about making their children into responsible, amazing people. Besides giving good education, imparting moral values is extremely important. An increase in the juvenile crime rate, pregnancy in the adolescent masses, embezzlement, abuse and self-annihilation are the result of a degradation of moral values in the new generation. The need of the hour is to acknowledge the magnitude of imparting good values in children so that they can differentiate between right or wrong. Teach moral values by being their role models To make your children responsible society members, teach them moral values like honesty, loyalty, respect, self-reliance, self-discipline, patience, kindness, gratitude, forgiveness, personal responsibility and courtesy. These values help in developing a strong personality for your child and that minimizes the possibility of having them go astray. It is said that from the age of 5-6 children start differentiating between right or wrong and the first lesson comes from their parents. They see their parents as role models and try to follow in their footsteps. There are little eyes upon you and they're watching night and day; There are little ears that quickly take in every word you say; There are little hands all eager to do everything you do; And a little child who's dreaming of the day he will be like you. Set an example by following examples that you want your children to follow. Be honest if you want them to be honest. As they grow, the child's power to grasp abstract concepts also grows. Therefore their understanding of moral value increases as well. They become keen observers and do exactly what their parents do. So be careful in every act of your behavior while maintaining social and personal relationships. Few easy steps to impart moral values By imparting moral values, parents play a dominant role in molding the attitude and approach of the children in their life. Here are a few easy steps to improve your skill-set in this area. 1. Narrate patriotic, religious or ethical stories. Question them about the lesson they have learned. 2. Be polite, respectful and considerate towards others. 3. Media exposure plays a major role in our life. While watching the news or even a movie discuss the different aspects and ask the child what he/she would have done in that situation. This will develop a sense of reasoning in children. 4. While performing religious activities involve the child where you can. It generates faith and trust towards God. 5. Listen respectfully to your child's ideas and wherever required correct them. This will boost their self-confidence. 6. Spend quality time with children. The quality of time that you spend with your children has a close effect on what they grow up into. 7. Provide opportunities for your children to help others. This will instill in them generosity. 8. Involve your child in community service. It will generate an attitude of serving. 9. Tell your child about the people you admire and why. It will silently inculcate good qualities. 10. Comment on compassionate behavior. Let your child know that caring is an important moral value.

There are a few simple guidelines for you to help you handle your naughty child. Here are a few tips for dealing with naughty kids: 1. Fix Limits Don't accept everything your child says. Set limits and don't put the responsibility of deciding what he needs and doesn't need entirely on him. Be firm but gentle if he throws tantrums, then tell him that he won't just get what he wants with such behaviour. 2. Be Consistent Don't treat your children differently every day. If one day you are firm with your child and lenient the next day, he won't take you seriously. For instance, if one day you don't allow him to watch TV for long, and the next day you let him watch all he wants just because you are busy and want him to keep quiet, it will send out a mixed message to your child. So be consistent in setting and following rules. 3. Give Your Child Some Independence Don't dictate every last thing what your child should do. Give him little independence with regards to choosing his own clothes or deciding how he would like to drink milk. 4. Limit Screen Time Watching cartoons constantly without any limitation can increase agitation in children, making them over-excited and prone to naughty behaviour. Your own behaviour will be a mirror to your child's behaviour, so make sure your behaviour is ideal for him to follow. Do not be too strict on him as this will make him naughty and nervous as he will not understand your feelings and your expectations of him.
