Ric Scalzo began his exploration of herbal and naturopathic medicine in 1980, delving into fields such as Naturopathic Herbal Medicine, Eclectic Herbal Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and various diagnostic methods. He earned a master's degree in Herbal Medicine from the School of Herbal Medicine and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. After several years of medical practice, Ric founded Gaia Herbs in 1987 and grew Gaia to the most respected and successful herbal company in the country. After selling Gaia in 2019, Ric established the Institute of Botanical Research in Arizona and established CR Medicinal Farms, a regenerative organic farm in Costa Rica. These became the stepping stones for his new adventure called Kokora, a herbal products company focused on regenerative organic cultivation with a mission to "create the finest herbal remedies that promote health and vitality for all". Celebrated for his pioneering work in Herbal Medicine and his dedication to preserving herbal integrity for over four decades, Ric continues to innovate in the field and plays a key role in integrating regenerative agriculture with herbal medicine. In this episode, Ric Scalzo explores how regenerative herbal farming, constitution‑based botanical formulas, and aligned sleep practices can radically upgrade immune resilience, metabolic health, and inner‑outer environment regeneration. He also addresses being on the Donald Trump 250 concert and talks about pulling out.

If your motivation in perimenopause feels like it's been replaced by a slot machine, you are not losing your discipline. Alisha Carlson breaks down what's actually happening hormonally when motivation stops tracking with anything on your calendar, including why perimenopause creates bigger, less predictable swings than the cycle you grew up with, and what the research says about the link between hormone fluctuation, motivation, and mood. This is the science-backed, no-shame explanation for why some weeks training feels impossible, and a practical plan for building consistency that doesn't depend on motivation showing up on schedule. What You'll LearnHow a regular menstrual cycle works, and why it created a predictable hormonal rhythm in your 20s and 30sWhat actually changes in perimenopause: rising anovulatory cycles, early progesterone decline, and erratic estrogen swings that can spike higher than your normal peak before crashingWhy research shows it's hormone fluctuation, not hormone level, that predicts mood disruption during the menopause transitionThe neurotransmitter link between estrogen and the brain chemistry behind motivation and rewardWhat exercise-motivation research actually shows about hormone phase and perceived effortThree practical moves for building consistency that survives an unpredictable motivation week, without building a new rigid protocol around your cycleThis Episode Is For You If...You used to be able to predict your motivation and now genuinely cannotYou've caught yourself turning a low-motivation week into a referendum on your discipline or characterYou're skeptical of rigid cycle-syncing protocols but still want to understand what's actually happening hormonallyYou're navigating perimenopause and want the mechanism explained without the shame attachedYou want a non-diet, identity-based way to stay consistent that doesn't depend on feeling motivatedIf this episode named something you've been feeling but couldn't explain, that's exactly why this work matters. Laura Federico is a certified sex therapist. Morgan Miller is a certified professional midwife who runs a birth center in Maine. They've been friends since their early twenties and recently co-authored "The Cycle Book," a guide and tracking tool built to teach people about their hormones before they're in crisis. They join Em and Cass to talk about why most of us only learn about our cycles when something is already wrong, and what changes when you actually understand what your body is doing. From there, they get into the trap of cycle-syncing programs (the seed cycling, the diets, the "stay in bed during your luteal phase" advice), why ovulation deserves way more attention than it gets, the cervical fluid biomarker nobody was taught about in middle school, and why the natural-versus-unnatural binary is a red flag every time. They explain why they're fans of tracking your cycle even on hormonal birth control, what they actually think of Oura Rings, and the stat about period tracking apps that should be on every billboard (they're 21% accurate at predicting ovulation, and your data is being bought and sold). In this episode, Maggie McDaris, CEO and Co-Founder of Phase, breaks down the science and practical application of cycle syncing, explaining how each phase of the menstrual cycle influences energy, cognition, productivity, and overall performance. She walks listeners through the follicular, ovulatory, luteal, and menstrual phases, highlighting the unique strengths and challenges of each stage, including the often-overlooked immune and recovery considerations during the luteal phase. Maggie also explores the role of dopamine, healthy ways to pursue motivation and achievement, and how understanding your biology can help prevent burnout in a culture that often expects women to perform the same way every day. The conversation addresses the stigma surrounding menstrual cycles, the importance of involving men in the discussion, and how cycle awareness impacts sleep, circadian rhythms, and workplace success. Maggie concludes by sharing actionable tips for getting started with cycle syncing and explains how the Phase app helps women align their schedules with their biology to optimize health, productivity, and sustainable performance.Maggie McDaris is the CEO and Co-Founder of Phase and a thought leader at the intersection of human performance and the future of work. A Registered Dietitian, corporate wellness and public health expert, and WELL Accredited Professional, she has spent more than a decade translating health science into practical strategies for real life and work. Before founding Phase, Maggie scaled high-growth wellness businesses and led multidisciplinary teams, gaining a firsthand view of how modern work routinely ignores human biology. That insight became the foundation for Phase, a biology-based productivity system designed to help women connect the dots between their bodies and their workload. Maggie is skilled at turning deep wellness expertise into high-impact, revenue-generating solutions, and she's on a mission to fundamentally reframe how we think about productivity, performance, and sustainable success. What does it actually take to navigate global regulatory filings across the FDA, EMA, and PMDA, and why do so many programs stumble despite technically harmonized dossiers? AJ Acker draws on about 30 years of rare disease regulatory experience to break down the real differences between regions and the strategies that drive successful multi-regional approvals.AJ discusses why ICH compliance doesn't equal regulatory alignment, how Japan's evolving regulatory landscape creates both opportunity and complexity, and why the preparation that starts early in development (not at submission) is what determines whether a program achieves tight global approval timelines.A few of AJ's key takeaways:FDA, EMA, and PMDA share the same goal but ask fundamentally different questions — sponsors need to understand each lens, not just the shared scienceICH harmonization provides a common foundation, but technical alignment is not regulatory alignment — region-specific engagement is essentialStart planning for all three regions early, especially Japan — PMDA will ask why they weren't included in early developmentExpect different regulators to want different endpoints from the same data — early conversations prevent study design misalignmentLocal regulatory experts and ex-regulators are most valuable as strategic advisors and early warning systems, not just document producersSimultaneous filings are becoming the norm, but resource planning for parallel review cycles is criticalAI is emerging as a tool for sharpening submission strategy — not replacing expertise, but catching gaps human reviewers might missAbout AJ AckerAJ Acker is Senior Vice President of Regulatory, Quality & Clinical Safety at Annexon Biosciences. TALK TO ME, TEXT ITThe morning starts with a jolt: are social platforms edging into Big Tobacco territory, and if so, who's truly on the hook—companies, creators, or us? We wrestle with the ethics of addictive design, government scrutiny, and the gray zone between personal agency and engineered behavior. The viral comparison isn't clean, but it's powerful, and it pushes us to consider layered responsibility: rails set by policy, restraint built into products, standards upheld by creators, and habits we choose for ourselves. From there we steer into home life and the science of sleep. A new survey suggests couples who go to bed at the same time tend to report stronger, happier marriages. We talk about why shared bedtime works—not as a magic trick, but as a simple nightly ritual that keeps connection easy and resentment low. Can't sync every night because of shifts or sports? We offer practical substitutes: a short wind-down together, a ten-minute debrief, or a morning coffee that anchors the day. Then we cool things down—literally. Research on bedroom temperature and overnight heart recovery shows warmer rooms can strain your cardiovascular system, especially as you age. We unpack why heat taxes the body, why most people sleep better in the 60s Fahrenheit, and how to adjust your setup without wrecking your energy bill: breathable bedding, blackout curtains, pre-cooling, and small comfort tweaks that fit different sleepers.Threaded through the headlines is a deeper theme: attention is a scarce resource. With just two episodes left, we're rethinking the 30-minute pocket before work—finishing a longform series, listening with intent, even embracing a quiet moment instead of doomscrolling. We also touch a difficult news story to underline what's at stake when online heat boils over offline: respond with clarity, hold compassion, and keep your rituals steady. We want to hear from you. What should fill that pre-work window when the show ends? And what does a day in your life look like—work, rest, the small anchors that keep you steady?
