Post race highs. Post race lows. And everything in between. Today, we look at this journey as something that honestly builds health. Are your expectations bringing too much pressure and anxiety into your life? Are you falling into the traps over and over? Are you really training for health or to chase false hope? We like to think of this sport as a long range compass that should build strength, health, and sustainability. Exercise is supposed to give you energy, not take it away. Stay away from too high or too low. Find something that moves you each day and makes you look forward to tomorrow. Topics: Easy course? Fools errand? I have competed in various World Triathlon events for NZ, including two Cross Triathlons, Duathlon, Aquathlons and Sprint Triathlon. I have also raced several XTERRA events, and love trying out all sorts of multisport including swim run and gravel - I recently did the TransCape swimrun in Dunsborough. I also enjoy bikepacking and have ridden some epic trips in NZ. I've also enjoyed a couple of epic camps in NZ run by John Newsom from the IM Talk podcast. In NZ I ended up with a group of friends who loved doing endurance adventures! This winter I'm training for the Larapinta trail run in August in Alice Springs and the Gravel Muster the weekend after. This will be an awesome training camp 2 months out for World Champs in Wollongong in October where I'm representing NZ in the sprint. I am associated with the Fremantle Triathlon Club in Western Australia and have previously been a member of Wellington Triathlon Club, Tauranga Triathlon Club in NZ and the Thames Valley Triathletes in the UK which is where it all started for me! After ALLLLLL the flak the WFP qualifier got for having no squatting in it..... this happens. Lucky for everyone else, Bill and Chase are here to save the day but FIRST they will "analyze the programming" of the 2025 CrossFit Games Age Group Semifinals.
Live competition is here! The first in-person semifinal is set to kickoff this weekend in Cookeville, Tennessee. Sean, Tommy, and Lauren preview the Mayhem Classic and tell you who they think might have the inside track in the battle the first two tickets to the CrossFit Games. Speaking of tickets, they're on sale for the Games in Albany. Are slow sales a sign of things to come for the sport in general or just an isolated problem? Age group athletes take on their in-affiliate semifinals this weekend and squats aren't on the menu...or are they? Plus, an update on the World Fitness Project season and a brilliant new name for knee sleeves.

You've completed the CrossFit Open 2025, but do you truly understand what each workout was testing? Coaches David Syvertsen @davesy85 and Sam Rhee @bergencosmetic dive deep into the methodology behind this year's programming, revealing insights that could transform your approach to training. The first workout wasn't just about lunges and dumbbell movements—it was a deliberate test of your mental endurance and ability to maintain continuous movement for 15 minutes straight. As @davesy85 says, "They purposely didn't make it heavy... As tired as you are, you can always keep moving on a burpee." This accessibility by design serves CrossFit's goal of casting a wider net, especially for first-time Open participants. The classic thruster and pull-up combination in 25.2 exposed weaknesses in either barbell strength, gymnastics skill, or the mobility required to link these movements efficiently. The coaches note that the thruster "might be the most complete movement in terms of fitness," requiring full-body coordination and excellent front rack mobility.Perhaps most revealing was the discussion about rest periods versus rep schemes. "I want to challenge all athletes to start thinking about how many breaths am I taking between sets, rather than what should my sets be." This mindset shift could be the key to shaving minutes off your workout times, especially in tests like 25.3 where transitions between stations often consume precious seconds. The conversation takes a particularly passionate turn when addressing the scaling options. Many of the athletes in the 55+ age group found the scaled movements "thoroughly unsatisfying," arguing that many Masters competitors can and regularly do perform more advanced gymnastics movements than what's programmed. The coaches propose thoughtful solutions that would maintain the integrity of the competition while being more inclusive.Whether you're analyzing your own Open performance or planning next year's approach, this episode offers valuable insights that bridge the gap between programming theory and practical application. Nick Thompson is the CEO of The Atlantic, the famous American magazine and digital publisher founded in 1857. Before that, Nick was an Editor at both Wired and The New Yorker, developing a reputation for his great reporting, unique perspectives, and impactful stories across a range of subject matter. In addition to his amazing professional career, Nick has also been a committed runner for life, a talented marathon runner, who is now dabbling in trail and ultrarunning. Back in 2021, Nick set an age group American record for 50k running 3:04, famously at the same time that Des Linden broke the Women's world record at the distance. Now, Nick is experimenting with trail and ultra running, doing a few 50 milers and a 100k, with at least some curiosity about the 100 mile distance. I've been a massive admirer of Nick's for a while. A media guy who is also a runner, Nick is an inspiration for me and I'm honored to have him on the show. Want to race better? Master the principles in this podcast. Today, we look at what's really important for long course triathlon. The ability to hold form and effort over a long period of time. You can make it rocket science if you want, but the principles are pretty easy. Don't break down. But how do you get to that point? We talk about how to get there and nail the omnipresent philosophy of: It's not how fast you go, but how little you slow down. We look at how fatigue masks fitness, how it's important to test with fatigue, holding form when you need it most and the the real concept behind being “strong” in triathlon.
