We may know how to pray with our hearts and minds, but Father Dave welcomes Dr. Ansel Augustine to discuss what it means to put that prayer into action. Dr. Augustine currently serves as the Assistant Director of African American Affairs for the USCCB Secretariat of Cultural Diversity in the Church, and his new book is called, “Praying With Our Feet: Encountering God in the Margins.”

With stories from pilot groups, this episode is a powerful call to action for all who care about the future of our Church and our world.
In this enlightening episode of Father and Joe, hosts Father Boniface and Joe Rockey tackle a common challenge faced in both missionary work and personal faith journeys: effectively communicating the vast benefits of attending Mass. Using the analogy of sales and products with multiple benefits, Joe introduces the idea that one needs to understand the needs of the person they're engaging with to convey the most relevant benefits. Just as eggs can be appreciated for various uses in meals, the benefits of Mass extend far beyond individual understanding, offering a unique and personalized spiritual experience to every attendee.Father Boniface steps in to explain the power of forming meaningful relationships, not just in sales but within the spectrum of evangelization and attending Mass. Our episode explores the concept of 'accompaniment,' where personal interaction and understanding play critical roles in spiritual guidance and evangelization. This approach helps parishioners form a deeper connection with the Mass, experiencing its full benefits uniquely tailored to their life stage and personal circumstances. We delve into the importance of fostering interior participation in Mass, where silence plays a crucial role. Father Boniface introduces practical ways to connect deeply with the Mass's proceedings, which is essential for transforming a routine obligation into an enriching personal journey filled with discovery and purpose.Additionally, we discuss overcoming the initial sensations of social awkwardness that some might feel when attending Mass, focusing on how to transition from merely going through the motions to actively engaging in a way that reveals Mass's transformative power. Discover how Mass is not just a weekly obligation but a profound means of receiving guidance, healing, and purpose throughout life's fluctuations.Join us as we explore creating moments in Mass that lead to spiritual growth by aligning personal experiences with the spiritual community and the central purpose of the Eucharist. Whether you're a devout parishioner or someone seeking to reengage with your faith, this conversation provides helpful insights to transform your relationship with Mass.Tags: Faith, Podcast, Mass Benefits, Personal Faith, Spiritual Growth, Eucharist, Sales Analogy, Evangelization, Accompaniment, Interior Participation, Spiritual Guidance, Overcoming Awkwardness, Father Boniface, Joe Rockey, Religious Experience, Church Community, Personalized Spirituality, Missionary Work, Transformation, Spiritual Wisdom, Theology, Catholic Church, Christian Faith, Building Relationships, Mass Engagement, Discovering Faith, Church Attendance, Meaningful Worship, Personalized Faith, Spiritual Fulfillment, Religious Obligations, Community Support, Guidance through Mass, Listening to God, Interior Silence, Growth through Faith, Christian Podcast, Spiritual Direction, Personal Connection, Catholic PodcastHashtags: #FaithJourney, #PodcastSeries, #MassBenefits, #SpiritualGrowth, #Eucharist, #SalesAnalogy, #Evangelization, #Accompaniment, #InteriorParticipation, #SpiritualGuidance, #OvercomingAwkwardness, #FatherBoniface, #JoeRockey, #ReligiousExperience, #ChurchCommunity, #PersonalizedSpirituality, #MissionaryWork, #Transformation, #SpiritualWisdom, #Theology, #CatholicChurch, #ChristianFaith, #BuildingRelationships, #MassEngagement, #DiscoveringFaith, #ChurchAttendance, #MeaningfulWorship, #PersonalizedFaith, #SpiritualFulfillment, #ReligiousObligations, #CommunitySupport, #GuidanceThroughMass, #ListeningToGod, #InteriorSilence, #GrowthThroughFaith, #ChristianPodcast, #SpiritualDirection, #PersonalConnection, #CatholicPodcastThis line is here to correct the site's formatting error.

Prayer is essential—but sometimes, it's not the only thing someone needs. In some seasons, words can fall short if they aren't paired with presence and love. This episode invites you to reflect on how we can truly support one another—not only by praying for someone, but by walking with them. Drawing from Scripture, the wisdom of the saints, and real-life experience, we explore the power of showing up, listening well, and offering small acts of mercy. Let's become the kind of people who pray deeply—and live that prayer out with compassion. Book Fred and/or Kara to speak by visiting the Draw Near "booking page (https://www.drawnear.me/booking)." Photo Credits: Viktoria Gaus, Yvan Hannay, Nicolas Deru, Stefanie EiflerIn this episode, we once again talk about the Love Community (#64) – this time through the eyes of co-founder Stefanie Eifler.Stefanie, who everyone simply calls Steffi, loves to combine her two passions and immerse herself in a world of aesthetics – in the beauty of tangible forms just as much as in the beauty of human connection. Whether as a graphic designer and artist or as an initiator and personal companion, her motivation is to welcome people just as they are. To soften their gaze, to create connection, to open and illustrate new perspectives, and to support each person's heart energy to flow, and finding the way into their own authenticity. She will share to you her own journey: how a tantric seminar opened her eyes to deep self-acceptance. How she moved beyond a destructive self-image and societal expectations into her authentic self. She shares about which role sexuality has played in this process, and what new freedoms can emerge when we start questioning norms we grew into.Steffi will offer us insights into how she puts her artistic skills in service of people: in the form of intimate portrait sessions, massages, cuddle sessions, or tangible expressions such as books to take home. All with the intention of empowering the individuals who come to her.The first of these propositions is especially close to her heart. One might wonder what purpose a portrait of one's own intimate area – like the Yoni (Sanskrit for the female genitals) – could serve. For Steffi, it is about recognizing the own, completely individual beauty. About letting go of ideas of how we “should” look like, perhaps processing transgressive or difficult experiences with sensitive support, or simply discovering oneself anew. All of this within a respectful, confidential, and caring space. A jointly created ritual opens the way to the next step of self-empowerment for those interested, and this remarkable step is then manifested in a poetically inspired image.Steffi has already accompanied several Yoni-bearing individuals along this path, and in the meantime has also begun to support the first Lingam-bearers (Lingam is in sanskrit the word for the male genitals). We will talk about why this physical diversity is scientifically proofed aesthetically beautiful to the human eye, and how each person's individuality brings richness into our lives. This episode is about the unity and diversity of being human – across borders, language barriers, or personal stories. Because the language of the heart – affection and empathy – is universal. If all this resonates with you, feel invited to let this universe of the Love Community grow, and simply contact Steffi directly with whatever proposition interests you most: hello((at))intousia.comSteffi's propositions – short links:Intim-Portrait-Ritual:https://www.intousia.com/meet-your-temple/Cuddle Sessions in group or individual settings:https://www.intousia.com/cuddle-spaces/Heart opening Massage in an individual or couples' session: https://www.intousia.com/heart-opening-ritual/Accompaniment in individual sessions:https://www.intousia.com/personal-accompaniment/Book – Guide du yoni massage: https://lavoieduplaisir.com/guide-initiatique-du-massage-de-la-yoni/Recommendations which had a great impact on Steffi: The book: Ethical slut by Janet W. Accompaniment allows people of faith to mutually assist each other's spiritual growth and provides a pathway for less experienced people to learn and grow through an intentional relationship. The Catholic Apostolate Center recently developed an online course that equips people with the basics and how-to of accompaniment. Meg Ferguson, Curriculum Coordinator at the Catholic Apostolate Center, joins this episode of On Mission with Chris Pierno and Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. to share her inspiration and development of the virtual Accompaniment Course.Missionary discipleship is most fruitful through the witness of the baptized. Many are profoundly moved, particularly by the witness of young people. People often comment on who is not active in the life of faith. How often do we put our attention on those who are? These are the people, including many young people, who live their faith and go forth daily as missionary disciples of Christ. Pope Francis teaches that “missionary disciples accompany missionary disciples” (Evangelii Gaudium, 175). The baptized do not become missionary disciples on their own, they need accompaniment. This is true for young people and true for all. Young people do need accompaniment toward missionary discipleship, but that can only happen if others are well-formed disciples. Part of this formation includes learning more about ministry with young people, particularly young adults. Many young people evangelize others through their witness of faith in word and deed. Sometimes this is a story that is not told. They live well their faith through missionary discipleship and have brought others to Christ and his Church. They need our support, accompaniment, and prayers. The desire to have this essential text available in audio has been a long-held goal for many. The work of many hands has combined to bring this release to life as an audiobook. Retreats are an ancient practice for Catholics to get away from the day-to-day life and allow God to work in their hearts in a deeply intimate way. Brian Rhude, Project Coordinator at the Catholic Apostolate Center and Campus Minister for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, joins this episode of On Mission with Chris Pierno, Sarah Scalfaro, and Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C.Whether one goes on a day retreat or a weeklong silent retreat, retreats are a means to grow closer to Christ and to reinvigorate one's spiritual and prayer life. Engaged couples go on retreats to prepare for marriage. And other lay men and women take annual weekend retreats to enter deeper prayer. Many priests and religious, too, go on retreat to recharge their relationship with God in a profound way. Some religious orders' charism provides retreat experiences for people. Brian Rhude explains the many different kinds of retreats and how one can take their experiences home with them and allow the Lord to continually speak to them. The simplest retreat one can do every day is spending time with Jesus in daily prayer. I have been reminded over and over again in recent weeks of the preciousness of life as numerous dear friends and family members face loss of loved ones and their own life-altering health crises. This got me to thinking about how much my mentors have shaped my life. So with this latest episode I inaugurate a new Countermelody series entitled “Honor Your Mentors.” I have already posted numerous times on the podcast about my beloved teacher John Wustman. This coming July my friend and colleague Chanda VanderHart's monumental book Accompaniment in America: Contextualizing Collaborative Piano, co-authored with Kathleen Kelly and Elvia Puccinelli, will be published by Routledge. Chanda has put together an astonishing digital archive featuring a wealth of material related to the book: https://accompanimentinamerica.website/index.html Included in this material is an interview I did with Chanda about Mr. Wustman. Chanda has given me permission to include that interview on my podcast. This is supplemented by a sampling of (mostly) studio recordings of John featuring, among others, Régine Crespin, Carlo Bergonzi, Brigitte Fassbaender, Luciano Pavarotti, and Irina Arkhipova: truly an astonishing feast for the ears! Additionally, I was enormously saddened last week to read of the death of Joan Caplan, my first serious voice teacher in New York, and a phenomenal singer in her own right. Joan also remained a close friend through the years. In recent years she had been living at the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey. I was able to visit her there last summer and had intended to go see her again later this month. Alas, that can no longer happen, but I will also be featuring Joan in an upcoming episode in the “Honor Your Mentors” series. In her memory today, I present her in a scintillating recording of Orsini's Brindisi from Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia. Finally, though I'm sure no one needs to be reminded of this, please, my dears, tell all those you love how much they mean to you; don't wait until their funerals to give them their flowers! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.

In this episode of On Mission, Chris Pierno, William Tishuk, and Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. are joined by Dr. Susan Timoney, STD, Associate Professor of Practice at the Catholic University of America, to discuss the Jubilee Year: Pilgrims of Hope, 2025.The Church has an excellent opportunity to strengthen its hope in the Lord as we prepare for the 2025 Jubilee Year whose theme is “Pilgrims of Hope.” Pope Francis has invited the Church to prepare for this time of Jubilee with a Year of Prayer. Prayerful preparation for the Jubilee allows us to discern how we can witness the hope that comes from Christ the Lord. Pope Francis in the Bull on Indiction for the Jubilee says that “hope is born of love and based on the love springing from the pierced heart of Jesus upon the cross” (Spes Non Confundit, 3). In the Catholic Church, the concept of Jubilee or ‘Holy Year' was used to declare special years for forgiveness and reconciliation. The first Jubilee was declared by Pope Boniface VIII on 22nd February 1300 (Feast of the Chair of St. Peter), to mark the beginning of that century. He later recommended it occurring every 100 years. This year the Church celebrates the Jubilee: Pilgrims of Hope. In this episode of On Mission, Sarah Harrigan Scalfaro, Chris Pierno, and Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. are joined by Deacon Mark Krejci of the Diocese of Crookston to discuss the third year of the Eucharistic Revival, Year of Mission. This is an exciting new season of the Revival movement. The Holy Spirit has enkindled a missionary fire in the heart of our nation, and now he is sending out every member of the Church to spread the Good News—sharing the gift of our Eucharistic Lord with those on the margins. And YOU are invited to be a part of it! Download the Year of Mission Playbook here. We are all called to evangelize, and thanks to the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are well-equipped for this mission. It may not mean spreading the Gospel in a foreign land or going door-to-door with the Good News—and it may require overcoming some fears—but the Lord is asking each of us to step out of our comfort zone and evangelize one-on-one. There is someone in your life right now whom Jesus longs to call to himself. He wants to spark a relationship with them and bless them with his sacraments. In this Year of Mission, Catholics across the U.S. are saying “yes” to a special form of heart-to-heart accompaniment called the Walk With One initiative. This is your opportunity to be God's instrument in the life of another person. Imagine how our families, neighborhoods, and country will be transformed if every active Catholic answers this call!
