He is the Princi-Pal of School of Gaming! The coolest school on the planet! He plays Minecraft with children online because their parents can't, don't know how to, or don't want to. He keeps the young gamers safe and sound online and teaches them (and their parents) how to become model digital citizens of the future. He believes in the power of play. Unfortunately, play is something that is quickly decreasing in this world. Believe it or not, but adults seem to have forgotten that play without adults always interfering, making rules, and setting structures is actually the best way for children to learn. Through play, they learn the skills they need for the future. At School of Gaming, he links the popular online games that children already love with offline plays. They get together online every week, and the plays continue off-screen. He is an entrepreneur at heart, not afraid to take risks, and he comes with an adventurer's mindset. He has been working on interesting projects in various parts of the beautiful planet, trying to make the world a better place. The world keeps taking him constantly towards new (ad)ventures, and he just doesn't resist—not a single bit! Drop him anywhere in the world and come back 6 months later to see what's going on. He has probably started an impact enterprise, a football team, or a new nation. But to be honest, with School of Gaming, he feels that he has arrived home. And he feels that this is his last startup. And that's a good thing…

What would a personalized high school curriculum centered around global challenges look like? In this episode of the Fueling Creativity in Education Podcast, hosts Dr. Matthew Worwood and Dr. Cyndi Burnett sit down with Raya Bidshahri, an accomplished entrepreneur and educator who is the founder and CEO of the School of Humanity. Raya sheds light on her frustration with traditional education systems and shares her innovative approach to personalized, project-based learning, which forms the backbone of her school. Unlike conventional methods reliant on standardized tests, the School of Humanity emphasizes low-stakes knowledge checks and project-based assessments, encouraging students to engage in interdisciplinary challenges such as food security and the future of the internet. Raya's passion for education reform, grounded in her own positive experiences with project-based learning and entrepreneurship, fuels her vision to create a more effective, curiosity-driven educational system. The episode dives deep into the implementation of challenge-based learning and how AI can play a constructive role in education, with Raya differentiating between its ethical uses and potential for misuse. A techno-optimist at heart, she discusses a structured AI policy that encourages AI for tasks like brainstorming while banning it from generating entire essays to avoid academic dishonesty. The conversation is enriched with insights on flexible learning environments, the importance of scaffolded assessments, and the Human Literacies Framework that integrates traditional and innovative skills. With around 60 students and plans to double enrollment, Raya's School of Humanity is a testament to her effective educational approach.    About Raya Bidshahri: Raya Bidshahri is a serial entrepreneur and award-winning educator. Raya is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the School of Humanity, an award-winning online high school with an innovative learning model and interdisciplinary curriculum. At School of Humanity, learners from over 10 countries across 5 continents develop their skills, mindsets, and behaviors by tackling real-world challenges. Raya has been featured by the BBC as one of the 100 most influential and inspiring women globally. JESUS PEOPLE ARE EMPOWEREDThe Jesus People - Part 1Springcreek Church | Senior Pastor Keith StewartSeptember 24, 2023https://www.springcreekchurch.org/#realspringcreekchurch #bible #thejesuspeople #jesuspeopleareempowered #jesus #father #god #holyspirit #spirit #spiritfilled #presence #church #wearethechurchPeople are hungry for the supernatural and that's evident everywhere you look in society. But the one place where the realness of God should best be understood and experienced is often the very place most bereft of His presence. It's not supposed to be that way. The people of God are meant to be more than just carriers of a message but the very temple of God Himself – the place where God dwells and manifests His presence is supposed to be IN US. This message will show us how. NEW SERIES: The Jesus PeopleIn the late 60's and early 70's, a counter-cultural Christian movement began in California among young people called the Jesus People. It happened at the height of the sexual revolution and drug culture of the time, young people sincerely hungered for the supernatural and were finding it in Jesus even when they couldn't find it in the institutional church. In this series, we want to ask the question, "What does it mean to be the Jesus People today in a world where people seem to have lost their way and find the institutional church irrelevant?"  DISCUSSION QUESTIONS1. It's always easy to critique what's happening in the world. But in what ways do you see evidence of hunger for the supernatural, even if it is often misdirected and aimed at other things? How does the message of Christ speak into that spiritual hunger?2. God wants to dwell with his people. Pastor Keith pointed out the progression in Scripture from the Garden of Eden to the Tabernacle, then the Temple, followed by the coming of Christ (God with us) and ultimately in our bodies (the new temple of God). Since we are the very repositories of the presence of God, how does that affect the way you see yourself on the job? In your neighborhood? At School? In a crisis? Or in the presence of someone who doesn't know God?3. In the section of the message dealing with discerning the Spirit's presence, Pastor Keith highlighted several things the Scriptures highlight that help us discern what is of God and what is not. He listed several comparisons;• Spirit-centered versus Jesus-centered• Gift-centered versus Fruit-centered• Out-of-Control versus Self-Controlled• Bravado versus PowerWhat were your biggest takeaways from these discernment principles? Have you ever seen any of them abused and if so, in what ways (give an example)? How have you seen these discernment principles positively? Describe a believer you have known who definitely manifested the positive side of these principles.4. In the last section, the story of a man named Stephen was told. He was chosen for a task because he was filled with the Spirit. But that task for which he was chosen was to wait on tables. Why are the Spirit filled the ones who…• do whatever needs to be done.• react gracefully under provocation.• are mighty in the Word.• are like Jesus.5. How has this message challenged you? Where is God asking you to grow? In what ways were you encouraged?

Doc peels apart the big sticky questions about K-12 school mask mandates. What's kicked off the flurry of mask/mitigation lawsuits filed by parents? Have county health services abandoned their obligations to school districts? Are school boards spending pandemic funds on football fields? Why are doctors invited to present at school board meetings instead of environmental services experts? Learn what is happening and what should be happening is schools around America. MASK GUIDANCE. Schools are frantically seeking guidance from county health departments. While some counties have stepped up, others have stepped away and turned off the lights. Boards of Education (BOEs) then attempt to align decisions to the CDC, state recommendation, advice from legal counsel, or local doctors. MASKS IN THE REAL SCHOOL WORLD. School officials are unable to define what is an effective and acceptable mask. Hundreds of students might wear old masks, homemade masks, or fashion masks. Should schools issue masks to students and staff to ensure some baseline of quality? How are students educated about mask wearing and how are schools responding to medical exemption orders for some students with disabilities? CONTACT TRACING. We've all heard this concept. In practice, it's messy for schools providing in-person instruction. What frequently happens is that a student tests positive for COVID-19 and then the district notifies parents that their child was in “close proximity” to a child that tested positive for COVID-19. The parents are advised to observe their child for symptoms, but typically aren't required to have the student self-quarantine or receive a rapid test. How does a parent distinguish symptoms of colds, seasonal flu, allergies, COVID-19, and fatigue? ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES. The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund (March, 2021) pumped cash into schools in the form of block grants that allowed schools to spend the dollars to increase student achievement or mitigate pandemic concerns. Some districts spent their dollars on staffing and cleaning. Others installed artificial turf athletic fields, tracks, and new weight rooms. There was much, and unchecked, interpretation of what measures promoted student health during a pandemic. Doc also notes that few schools spend the funds on HVAC upgrades due to the technical barriers of upgrading existing systems. For example, filters that remove viruses decrease air flow through the system and strain circulation motors. Furthermore, equipment and installers are in short supply as supply chains fell apart in 2021. SHOULD SCHOOLS TEST FOR COVID-19 ON SURFACES AND IN THE AIR? Yes. Schools have utilized professional environmental services to test for mold or MRSA, remove impacted areas, and help to prevent future problems. Environmental companies that offer those services are able to test surfaces and air samples for the presence of COVID-19. Doc states that professional environmental services should be informing school boards about COVID-19 management in schools. PARENTS SUE SCHOOLS - MY CHILD GOT COVID-10 AT SCHOOL. Doc notes very recent lawsuits that parents have filed against schools in his state alleging that the school “failed to implement reasonable COVID-19 mitigation measures.” How might schools respond to the lawsuits? Will parents prevail. If so, then what happens? Doc describes how foreseeable tort law might be something we begin to hear about and what that term means for BOEs. FOLLOW DR. "Sophie, the Robot With a Soul" was first published in 2018 in Romania. School students do class projects based off of Sophie. She reedited it and published it through Cassius Publishing House in Romania. Irina and her 11 year old son, Mihai, both worked together to illustrate this book as well as others. Irina has written and illustrated two other children's books in Romania including "Darius The Dwarf" and "Toothy Makes Pancakes". She illustrated "Luluca" by author Raluca Irimie. Irina has also been published as a young adult sci-fi author of "Blue Fog" which is now available on Amazon. She is busy translating her newest young adult book from Romanian to English "Missing Genius" and it will be available soon on Amazon. Mihai Dumitru, her son and illustrator, is an artist and wants to be an architect or interior designer. Passionate about Minecraft, he creates and builds incredible worlds and structures. He illustrated "Sophie, the Robot With a Soul" when he was only 8 years old. Laurie & Matt conduct their first interview for this episode, bringing in an expert to help answer the question, "How Can Teachers Manage Time Better?" That expert is Serena Pariser, a rock star educator and author of two books for teachers, the most recent of which is called Real Talk About Time Management: 35 Best Practices for Educators, which she co-authored with Edward F. DeRoche. On her first book, Real Talk About Classroom Management, 50 Best Practices That Work and Show You Believe in Your Students, she was the sole author. In a strange era when time has seemingly distorted, and veteran teachers are experiencing an anxiety they haven't felt since their first year in the classroom, Serena translates time management techniques and tips for the online, distance-learning environment most teachers will be facing when school resumes in he fall. The interview follows the structure of the book, with Serena first addressing how to adopt a "Time Management Mindset." The conversation then moves onto time management strategies for "Planning," "At School, " and "At Home." Please take a moment to subscribe and leave a review! It really helps us become more visible and grow the coalition of caring adults dedicated to the health and wellness of our teens. This is episode 3 of Harry Potter Goes to School: Learning In and Out of Hogwarts, tragically entitled At School, Harry Had No One, in which we think about Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone chapter 2, The Vanishing Glass. It’s not a happy chapter, if you really think about it. Number four, Privet Drive appears to be an orderly, healthy, stable place to grow up, with its tidy front garden and family photographs, but it holds a bad secret behind the front door. Vernon and Petunia think their worst secret is the existence of their magical relatives. This chapter tells a far worse secret that is all too real and all too frequent, even in the non-literary world.

New "Diggs" for your dog: Zel Crampton's dog crate revolution

We use dog crates every day at School For The Dogs. They're an integral part of dog training: We recommend them to clients who are house training puppies, incorporate them into class exercises, and transport dogs in them. And yet, all of us who work at our training center agree: Crates... kind of suck! They're clunky and ugly! Noisy! Storing them is a pain, and when you have to open and then collapse them all day long (like we do), you're going to suffer pinched fingers. It has long seemed like a problem with no solution, but Zel Crampton might just be our white knight. Crampton is the founder of Diggs, a product development company whose flagship item, the Revol, is a crate that just might change everything... In this episode, he and Annie talk about the problem with crates, and the "revolution" that he foresees. Notes: Find the Revol at StoreForTheDogs - Through 3/31/19, get $25 off your Revol crate purchase from StoreForTheDogs.com with code SFTD25 - 10 innovative crates - Database of dogs licensed in NYC (last updated in 2017) - The Treat And Train In this episode, Annie spoke about how she wished there were a collar that could vibrate but not shock a dog; most vibrating collars are also shock collars. But after recording the episode, she was told about one! Witness the Dogwidgets "No Shock E-Collar Pet Trainer" --- Partial Transcript: Annie: So I am here with Zel Crampton, founder of Diggs. Is that how you call the company or is it Diggs pet products? Zell: Just Diggs. Annie: And I wanted to talk to Zel today because he has a product that is innovative in a bunch of ways, which we will talk about, but I think interesting to me in part because it's really like the only innovative thing in the world and the world is crates. At School for the Dogs we have maybe a dozen crates. They're really important. We use them every day, all the time. And nobody likes them. I would say these crates have no fans, but they're clunky. They hurt your fingers when you have to close them and open them all the time, which we do everyday, all day. They're noisy, they fall over, they, they're ugly. But they're totally necessary. Like we couldn't live without them. And yet I don't think anybody who works at School for the Dogs would have any nice things to say about any of them. And what you're doing in the world of crates is, it gives me hope that there is a future that could be better for this product. But I know Diggs has two products and why don't you tell us about those two products and then we can talk about how you got into this world. Zel: Sure. So our flagship product is the Diggs Revol dog crate. As you just rightfully said, crates are ugly, hard to use, unsafe, noisy, hard to collapse, hard to transport. Frankly, they're an abysmal product, when you consider other consumer categories, like they just haven't been changed in 50 years. They're just the same old ugly wire thing that for some reason never got, never innovated. Annie: Why? Zel: I'll give you my opinion. I don't know for a fact, but I actually think that the history of the pet industry is really that, you know, pets used to be property, right? And they're legally speaking, they are still property, but people used to view the pets as their property, right? I'm a dog owner. Right. Annie: Or a master? That's what my dad used to call himself, growing up. He was the art dog's master. Full Transcript available at SchoolfortheDogs.com/Podcasts/

INSEPARABLEThis husband and wife team have a devotion for the arts that definitely shines through. They not only share a deep love for one another, but their passion is evident musically and poetically. This marriage of hearts and artistry is truly a gift.Jimmie Tjari Highsmith, Jr., was born September 18,1967 in the “Flower City” Rochester NY, the birthplace of Jazz luminaries Cab Calloway, PeeWee Ellis, Chuck Mangione and many others. James, or as his friends call him “Jimmie” is a seasoned Jazz musician who began his musical incipiency at the mere age of 7. Jimmie began studying piano, which created the foundations for his song writing in his later years. A music teacher introduced him to the harmonious sound of the saxophone, and the rest shall we say is history. Recognizing Jimmies potential, he was guided to study music at the Hochstein School of Music where he honed his ability to musically shine and stand out from his peers. Jimmie brought that same focus and thirst for music to the High School for Performing Arts where he walked the halls with and befriended other standouts like Motion Picture Actor/TV Star Scott “Taye” Diggs, R&B Singer Charlene “Tweet” Keys and Opera Diva Regina Zona. At School of the Arts, Jimmie was exposed to a musically competitive environment of band competitions, jazz combo performances, composition classes and other competitive solo scenarios. In Jimmies senior year, he auditioned for and was accepted into the prestigious Eastman School of Music, where he played Baritone sax in the Eastman School of Music Jazz Ensemble.    After graduating from High School, Jimmie enlisted in the US Air Force. While stationed in New Jersey, Jimmie found himself in the ideal location to access the New York and Philadelphia jazz scenes. During this time, he formed a jazz band consisting of musicians from both the US Air Force and Army. The band played at many military events and performed in various countries as part of the entertainment for the International USO Tour and Tops in Blue. In 1992 Jimmie returned to Rochester where he launched his professional music career.  Jimmie has formed many bands, which have been recognized as top regional jazz bands playing in big music festivals and clubs. He has shared the stage with multiple Grammy Award winners, including Alicia Keys and Wynton Marsalis. His sax work represents some of the best in the Smooth Jazz and Contemporary Jazz Genre. Jimmie has also performed with many notables such as: Joseph Wooten, Chris Beard, Paul Boutte, Joe Beard, Carl Thomas, Grey Mayfield, Wycliffe Gordon, Eric Reed, Johnny O’Neal and Yolanda Adams. He and his band have also opened for many big named artist, such as: Natalie Cole, Little Richard, Najee, "Papa John" DeFrancesco, Robert Cray Blues Band, Joyce Cooling, Montell Jordan, Shameika Copeland, Neville Brothers, Me'chelle Ndegeocello, Jodie Watley, Chris Bodie, Temptations and The Isley Brothers. To visit Jimmie Highsmith's website CLICK HERE!  Lutonya Rachel Highsmith, a Rochester, New York, was born on August 20, 1969. Last week we talked about Faith, Hope and Love. We discovered that Hope is like the root of a tree and Faith and Love are the branches. A strong and well-nourished root produces good fruit! Faith and Love improve our service in that they influence how we interact with the people around us. People of Faith and Love are attractive and contagious. This week we are continuing along on that theme and focusing on the fact that apprentices of Jesus serve others. In our text the Apostle Paul points out four incentives for unity and four lifestyle changes that should result from our life in Christ. To put this in terms of last week’s study: "When we live the Gospel story, we act in ways that serve others." Or to summarize our text another way: "Since we are all apprentices of Jesus, we should act like it." After all, Jesus served others. In fact we might say that we could summarize his life by saying: "He came, he served, and he died." He didn't build a church, he never organized a fundraiser, he founded no Bible Colleges or Seminaries; He just came and served and died. It was all for us. Paul challenges the Philippians to complete his joy by living out the Gospel in very practical ways. This would make him very happy; to see the lifestyle of the people of God look like the lifestyle of our founder. In particular we want to focus on the third and fourth lifestyle changes he encourages: Don't have selfish ambition, but with humility consider others better than ourselves; and look beyond our own interests to the interests of others. Both of these lifestyle choices are predicated upon our understanding or our safe and secure position in Christ. Once we are assured that we are on the right track and our future is secure, we can look beyond ourselves to the needs of others. Again we see the importance of hope. When followers of Jesus live a life of service they have the added benefit of enjoying a rewarding and fulfilled life. Wanting and needing to be served by others is not life producing, but soul destroying. We gain by what we give away. Questions for Discussion: 1. Slide 2. What do you think it means to be "in Christ." The Apostle Paul uses this expression 150 times but it is not found elsewhere in the New Testament. 2. Slide 3. Have you found occasions when unity takes a lot of hard work? Was it worth it? Why or Why not? 3. Slide 6. Do some Christians have an especially hard time living out their faith? Why? What do they seem to lack, if anything? 4. Slide 7. Discuss times when you have experiences one of these four incentives for unity that Paul mentions in verse 1 5. Slide 8. Read 1:4 and 4:10 to see the other times Paul talks about his joy. What causes it? 6. Slide 9-11. Of the first three lifestyle issues is one more difficult than the others? Why or why not? If we perceive servants as being somehow lower or less esteemed than those they serve, what does that do for our view of Christ who was the ultimate servant? How do we get over that false narrative revealed in our prejudice toward those serving others? 7. Slide 12-14. Do you see the balance in Paul's comment: "look not only to your own interests?" Some followers of Jesus neglect their own families for the cause of Christ, why? What is Paul's concern? See 1 Timothy 5:8. 8. Discuss how you might serve others: At Work; At Home; At School; and in Your Everyday Life this week.
