Angela welcomes Dan Levitin, author of "Music as Medicine," to explore the profound impact of music on our biology and mental health. They discuss how music affects neurotransmitters and hormones, the intricate process of how we perceive sound, and the emotional connections we form with music. Dan shares insights on the therapeutic applications of music for conditions like anxiety and depression, emphasising the importance of personal music preferences in achieving relaxation and emotional healing. KEY TAKEAWAYS Music affects the biology of the brain by modulating neurotransmitters and hormones, which can preserve health, cure injuries, and act as a preventative measure against illnesses. Sounds, including music, are closely tied to emotional experiences. The emotional weight of a sound can enhance memory encoding, making certain songs evoke vivid memories from specific times in life. The effects of music are highly individual; what is calming for one person may be energising for another. Personal preferences play a crucial role in how music influences mood and physiological responses. Music can be beneficial in treating mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. For instance, sad music may help individuals feel understood during depressive episodes, while personalised music selections can effectively reduce anxiety. BEST MOMENTS "We've come to discover in the last 10 years or so with rigorous scientific studies, exactly how music affects the biology of the brain in particular, how it can be health preserving." "If you think about watching a movie, for example, and there's a scary scene in the movie, the music that comes before it can prime us to reach that level of anticipation." "A general principle of memory is that those things that carry the most emotional wallop are the things that get encoded into memory more quickly." "The dopamine hit we get from music, we come by honestly and authentically and organically. It's not addictive in the same way that drinking when you're thirsty is not addictive." George takes us back to his earliest music memories, painting vivid scenes of late-night drives with Dad in NYC to pick up Mom from her night shift at the hospital with the soulful tunes of Lou Rawls playing on the eight track player. We discuss the evolution of music technology in cars, exploring how it shapes personal and cultural identities, and reflect on the paradox of choice in today's digital age. In candid authenticity, George walks us through the moments of 9/11 as seen through someone in Manhattan on that day and opens up about the emotional solace he found in music during those tragic events, offering a poignant recount of how Des'ree's "Kissing You" became the guide that helped him create a video tribute to the make-shift memorial set-up just uptown from Ground Zero. In the closing chapters, we explore the transformative power of music in various aspects of life, from getting comfortable in the kitchen to recovery from physical injuries. George shares compelling personal stories, like how Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" became a motivational anthem during his recovery from a serious ankle injury, and how, as a lifelong Yankees fan, Frank Sinatra's “New York, New York” is seared into his memory. We close with the impact of family trips, the magic of Disney experiences, and George's quest to create a more equitable financial system. When I first heard Green-House and read the description of Olive Ardizoni's project back in early 2020 with Six Songs for Invisible Gardens, I felt an instant connection to the music and the ideas it conveyed. Since then, they have harvested growing sonic landscapes that, while adjacent to those early ideas, expand upon them to build a deeper conceptual framework. Green-House is now a duo with Ardizoni and Michael Flanagan, and on their new album, A Host for All Kinds of Life, the sharpest aural fields emerge. Ardizoni and Flanagan create inviting soundscapes that may have a gentle surface sheen, but inside are infinite folds, exploring the radical nature of joy and pleasure in an ever-darkening world. I was thrilled to talk to Ardizoni about these ideas and the gilded edges this music carves.A Host For All Kinds of LifeThe Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis. Here it is! The very first episode of A Life in Six Songs! Join us as we get to know one of our hosts, David, and his motivations for starting the podcast, as well as his life in six songs. David shares his heartwarming and, at times, heartbreaking journey, from his early musical encounters to his stint in the Army, his battle with PTSD, and his growing recognition of the therapeutic power of music. Every song offers a peek into a unique chapter of his life, be it the hair bands of the 80s and the transformative role of NWA's 'Straight Outta Compton' in his understanding of social justice, or the unexpected solace found in Britney Spears' 'Toxic' during his Iraq deployment.Follow your hosts David, Raza, and Carolina every week as they embark on an epic adventure to find the songs that are stuck to us like audible tattoos to tell the story of who we are and where we've been. Millions have been inspired by Dan Levitin's books, four of which were bestsellers, including "This Is Your Brain On Music," which has been translated into 27 languages. (His full bio is below) And even so…the celebrity neuroscientist and multi-million-book-selling author has a side hustle...making and producing music. Dan released his second full-length record - "Sex and Math" - in late 2021, following his own research which became the subject of his book "Successful Aging." Prior to being a world-renowned Neuroscientist focusing on how music positively affects the brain, Daniel was an award-winning musician and music producer. Dan has contributed to records by Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, and Stevie Wonder. Even the haunting, mega-hit song “Somebody I Used to Know” by Gotyé was mixed based on Daniel's creative input. He is a multi-instrumentalist (saxophone, bass, guitar and vocals), and has performed with Sting, Mel Tormé, David Byrne, Rosanne Cash, Neil Young, Rodney Crowell, Bobby McFerrin (with whom he co-wrote two songs), Victor Wooten, Tom Scott, and members of the Steve Miller Band. Mega Opera star Renée Fleming liked one of his songs so much that she asked him to sing it with her at a virtual Kennedy Center performance in 2020. Listen to the full interview here or watch the video interview on YouTube @ConnectedCarolineShow Links: W: Daniel Levitin FB: @Daniel.LevitinT: @DanLevitinIG: @DanielLevitinOfficialDan Levitin BioDaniel J. It's the biggest single predictor, much more so than socioeconomic status, of how your life is going to turn out at any age. Conscientiousness is a cluster of different things having to do with reliability, dependability exercising due caution, and rule-following, to some degree. A kid who's conscientious isn't going to cross against the light, and so, is less likely to get hit by a bus. An adult who's conscientious is less likely to end up in prison - and an older adult who's conscientious is going to see the doctor when something's wrong. They're actually going to do what the doctor tells them to do. My doctor friends tell me that, you know, 80% of their patients are non-compliant and, but a conscientious person is. So that's the role of personality in all of this.

Laurie & Matt take a detour from talking about teaching and parenting to discuss one of their favorite subjects, music. Because they love the year-end lists that start popping up in December, they decided to make one of their own, choosing to Describe 2020 in Six Songs. Why six? Because five wasn't enough. It happens to be Laurie's favorite number too. They take turns selecting songs (none of which were released in 2020) that they believe capture a critical piece of the essence of 2020, either through its title, the lyrics, its mood, some other association, or a mix of odd reasons. Since I haven't been able to write much lately—a function of my schedule, life, and general paralysis/anxiety—I figured I'd drop in with a quick newsletter to try to tap into that creative well again.Vice published a series called Unpaid Royalties, which digs into how the music industry exploits—today and always—Black artists, and what’s being done to change that. From the introductory entry:To this day, those Black artists are stolen from, underpaid, and consistently exploited by industry gatekeepers and their non-Black peers. But we knew that. What you may not have known is how we got here, and where we’re going. That’s what Unpaid Royalties aims to expose: How, for instance, the Telecommunications Act of 1996 disrupted Black radio, taking tastemaking power away from local Black DJs and putting it into the hands of major media conglomerations. Why pop music seems to be a viable option only for white artists. How police forces in some of the country's biggest cities have heavily funded “rap units” dedicated to specifically surveilling the perceived threats of rap artists. And, of course, what music deals still look like these days, and why Black artists are often more vulnerable to the most exploitative ones. There are several entries to check out. Elsewhere, Alexander Billet penned a piece for Jacobin, that begins with this question: Both Hip-hop and punk bloomed out of the social collapse created by the economic crisis of the 1970s. But where is the music of our twenty-first century disaster? In the late 70s, amidst New York City’s rampant poverty, institutionalized racism and disinvestment, joblessness, and white flight, two essential art forms were born. They were born out of a collective necessity, both political and social.Do the conditions exist in the 21st century for anything analogous, in art? Today’s music culture is such an individualized experience. Headphones. Personalized playlists. Algorithmic discovery. (Read the rest of Billet’s The Soundtrack to Our Age of Decay for more.) And that’s actually what struck me about the question—where is our 21st century disaster response music—and the U.S. in particular. Our “rugged individualism” is something more akin to “rigid individualism,” and that’s no more apparent in how such a large swath of the country approaches the pandemic. “I’m not going to let COVID dictate how I live.”“It should be up to individuals if they want to wear a mask. If they don’t feel safe going out, then don’t go out.” Etc. etc. The list goes on. (Lest you think I’m making a strawman argument, those are perspectives that friends of mine have expressed. And, as we know, those are relatively tame compared to how some people have approached the pandemic.)But, make no mistake, there is a certain collective response going on right now. Collective anxiety, depression, PTSD—at least for those of us doing our damndest to act responsibly and with the health of our friends, neighbors, families, and communities in mind. Anyways, sorry for that pandemic-induced tangent. Back to the music. What becomes of music, music creation, music listening, and art, in general, with a pandemic (damnit, there I go again) that seemingly accelerated those individualist trends already. I mean, if we were already experiencing music through our headphones and algorithms before—in public, at the office, in transit—where do we go once this is all over?I have no idea. But here’s some great music to take you into the weekend. It’s by LA-based artist Olive Ardizoni, who goes by Green House. The album is called Six Songs for Invisible Gardens and the title reflective of the art’s intention. It’s six songs made to play to plants. (And yes, you can find it on Spotify, too.) The album came out in January but it feels so good right now. I’ll quote the description from the artist on Bandcamp:“Six Songs for Invisible Gardens” was written with the intention of transforming the listening environment and augmenting domestic space. The music is designed as a communication with both plant life and the people who care for them.Love you all. Greg Get full access to Greg's Newsletter at greg.substack.com/subscribe

Have you ever wondered why you get goosebumps when you listen to certain songs? Or what makes a hit, a hit? Maybe you've argued that the music you listened to when you were younger, is the best music that was ever made. All of that, relates to neuroscience. The way the brain processes music is a huge field of study; it's why music therapy exists, why people with Alzheimer's can remember a tune from the childhood, or why songs can be a way for non verbal people to communicate. It's something I'm endlessly fascinated by, and I know I'm not alone. That's why I asked Dr Daniel Levitin to Take 5. In 2007, Daniel published a book called This Is Your Brain on Music. It laid out, in layman's terms, all of the neural pathways that spark when we hear songs. It sold millions of copies, and he backed it up with an anthropological book called The World in Six Songs. But Daniel's life didn't start in the sciences. First and foremost, he's a musician himself. He was a producer and engineer for about 15 years too; working alongside Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, and The Grateful Dead. He knows his stuff. I asked Daniel to Take 5 with the neuroscience of music, and share songs not only from his own life but explain what's happening to the brain, when he hear them. I loved this chat. I could speak for days about this stuff, and it just adds to a rich understanding and love of music, from all  over the genre map. From Beds are Burning to Beethoven, to one of the most beautiful tunes ever written, Daniel articulates the spark of a song. Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning Iggy Azalea - Fancy [Ft. Charli XCX] The Afflicted - Here Come The Cops Herbert von Karajan, Berliner Philharmoniker - Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67; I. Allegro con brio Judy Garland - Over The Rainbow

It’s Sukkot—which lasts seven days in Israel and eight days outside of Israel. A sukkah is the temporary dwelling in which farmers would live during harvesting in ancient days. Throughout the holiday, meals are eaten inside the sukkah and some choose to sleep there. During Sukkot, it is customary to read Kohelet, or Ecclesiastes, to remind us how fleeting life is, and that we should seek a deeper meaning besides the fulfillment of material goods. No one knows for sure who wrote the book of Ecclesiastes, but it has been traditionally attributed to King Solomon. Orit Gidali imagines king Solomon, Kohelet, as the author in the poem Kohelet. He hosts multiple live shows on That Metal Station and fronts multiple bands including Thrash or Die. We highly recommend it. [caption id="attachment_39318" align="alignright" width="350"] Ralph Viera [/caption] Equally interesting this week is our discussion at the top of the show of Vinnie Vincent. As we announced a couple months ago, Vinnie was confirmed and announced as a guest for the Nashville Rock n Pod Expo. A lot of work went into promoting his appearance and things were about to go into overdrive. However, things started changing over the past week and ultimately, Vinnie's appearance was cancelled. Facebook Review: 5 Stars - from Mark Adams The Decibel Geek Podcast is a must listen every week for me. I became a faithful listener about a year ago for several reasons. 1) The Music: I always get to listen to great music. The variety of tunes featured is top notch. Into some of the bands more than others, but the exposure to music I haven't heard before is always appreciated. 2) The Guests: Chris and Aaron have what it takes to make an interview worth listening to. The stars and guest that are on are always entertaining. The insight and humor is always appreciated. I learn something I didn't know almost every time. 3) The Variety: I love themed shows, Toddzilla, KISSmas in July, The featured shows (RUSH, AC/DC) and especially the Radio Sucks episodes. A huge shout out to the Y&T episode you had. They have always been a top 3 band for me and it was great for them to get the exposure they deserve. Thats about it. I will continue to make this podcast a weekly must listen. Great Job guys!! Nashville music scene legend and dear friend of the show Todd Austin returns for Six Songs Toddzilla Thinks You Should Hear. If you are new to the show and unfamiliar with Toddzilla, be sure to familiarize yourself with his first two appearances on Decibel Geek. His first appearance, Roth-Era Van Halen Discussion, introduced the listeners to a master storyteller. Todd's memories of growing up a Van Halen fan in the late 70's and his hilarious stories of seeing the band live made him an instant hit to Decibel Geek listeners. [caption id="attachment_32949" align="alignright" width="300"] Six Songs Toddzilla [/caption] Toddzilla's second appearance on the show focused on his story. Conversation with Toddzilla included stories of Todd's many years as a professional musician (including highs and lows), his unique appearance, run-ins with legends such as Robert Plant and Billy Gibbons, a strange music store encounter with Vinnie Vincent, and an Ace Frehley story and impression that will have you cackling like a spaceman from Jendell. Things were no laughing matter, however, earlier this year when Todd's life was turned upside down due to a house fire that destroyed his home, most of his belongings, and nearly all of his beloved pets. The music community (including many Decibel Geek listeners) rallied around Todd to chip in to a GoFundMe account that was put in place to help Todd and his partner Abbie replace much of what was lost. In this Six Songs episode, Toddzilla gives us an update on where things stand in the recovery process, stories about the fundraiser and an incredible benefit concert, details on his projects including Funkhammer, Jones World, and Purple Masquerade, as well as fantastic stories that coincide with each of his Six Songs choices. We wrap things up this week by spinning one of our personal favorite Funkhammer tunes. We hope you enjoy Six Songs Toddzilla Thinks You Should Hear and SHARE with a friend! More Toddzilla!
