We were all born to matter and have gifts to share with the world. That's Tom Doherty's life mission.  Listen to Isabel navigate through Tom's Beautiful Mess called life.  Tom's incredible story stems from challenges and chaos of childhood as he was raised by two teenage parents, challenges and chaos from childhood.  As well, how he found himself as "the fixer" and National Director for Facebook is Silicon Valley.  Power Takeaways on this episode of Beautiful Mess: When you grow up in an environment where you don't know where you're going to be from one day to the next, you're resilient. What it meant to become a father. How we show up for our children..."I spend time with them and I love them...it's that simple". They used to call me "the cleaner" ...I would fly in and fix accounts and fly out again. The reality of "empty nest syndrome". Leading teams through the pandemic..."pivot or perish". Tom's message is #born2matter ...and so so much more!!!!   Connect with Tom on LinkedIn:  http://linkedin.com/in/thomas-dohertyjr Does Tom's story resonate with you? Tell us how in the comments. Join us for the latest information on perinatal addiction.  We will explore the most commonly used substances that affect the lives of families and their babies during pregnancy and postpartum. We also discuss the new legislation in some states that has changed the way that parents with substance use issues are treated.  Since it's been proven that punitive measures do not lead to change with people who have this complicated problem, new laws were put into place with the hope that women with substance use issues start prenatal care earlier. You'll also learn how educators and other birth workers can offer resources for those who want to seek help.     Our guest, Dr. Kaylin Klie, MD, MA is an addiction medicine specialist who works at UCHealth in Colorado as an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Psychiatry with a special focus on perinatal addiction. She is the founder of the Denver Health and University of Colorado OB Addiction Medicine clinics, which provide integrated peripartum care and substance use assessment and treatment for pregnant and mothering women.  Dr. Klie has been on a steering committee member for the State of Colorado Substance Exposed Newborn task force, and the co-chair for Provider Education. She served on the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Maternal Mortality Review Committee, helping healthcare workers and the public understand the impact substance use continues to have on maternal morbidity and mortality in Colorado.    Listen and Learn   How legislative changes for Colorado families include that substance exposure during a pregnancy alone is no longer automatically considered child abuse or neglect How a punitive response to substance use in pregnancy has negative health effects for families, instead of being helpful   What is meant by “context more than the toxicology” in helping to keep a plan of safe care for the family  That substance use covers a wide variety of products that people are addicted to  How to think about what kind of support a person who uses substances may need  When we welcome people with substance use into our services and classes, it helps them seek prenatal care rather than waiting due to fear    Resources & Mentions Get in touch with Dr. Klie:  KAYLIN.KLIE@CUANSCHUTZ.EDU    Related Products from InJoy Understanding Pregnancy Curriculum Understanding Birth Curriculum Understanding Breastfeeding Curriculum Alcohol & Pregnancy You Can Quit! Today on “Post Reports,” we follow up with Brooke and Billy High, two teenagers compelled into parenthood by the Texas abortion ban. Now, they're caring for their twin daughters in a new city — and trying their best to hold it all together.Read more:Last summer, The Post's abortion reporter Caroline Kitchener told the story of a teenager who wanted an abortion and ended up having twins because of the Texas abortion ban. The story — which “Post Reports” also covered — went viral. “The fascinating thing about that story for me was that people read it in two completely different ways,” Caroline Kitchener tells guest host Will Oremus. “You had antiabortion people saying, ‘This is wonderful. There are two babies in the world. Their parents love them. They got married. He's joining the military,' … kind of holding them up as poster children for what an abortion ban can do. But on the other side, you had abortion rights advocates saying, ‘This is a tragedy. She dropped out of school, this ambitious young woman; her life in so many ways is just so much more difficult.'”In today's episode of “Post Reports,” Caroline catches up with Brooke and her now-husband Billy as the two 19 year-olds try to make marriage and parenthood work.

Every human being experiences trauma to some degree. We don't have to experience "Big T Traumas" for those experiences to leave an imprint on our hearts and bodies. At age 5, Kimberly had such an experience after witnessing her father physically abuse her mother while she and her older sibling were present. And, because they were in a vehicle, there was nowhere to run or hide. Afterward, her father dropped off her mother and sibling at a family member's home. On the other hand, Kimberly was taken by her father to sleep elsewhere and away from her family, with terror in her body and fear in her heart. From that day forward, Kimberly's life changed forever. Kimberly was left in the care of her father's brother and his wife, where Kimberly would go from a family unit of four and having an older sibling she adored to becoming an only child. She became estranged from her immediate biological family in an instant. Her older sister remained with their parents and experienced the addition of more siblings that came along over the years that Kim had no part of, too, which only added to her grief over the years.Defining moments like these shape the rest of our lives and impact who we become and how we show up in the world. Kimberly had to learn how to build her self-esteem, that self-love is the best love, and that she was worthy of love no matter what she did or didn't do for others. Kimberly shares a lesson her adopted father shared with her: "Stand for something, or you'll fall for anything." I believe Kimberly did just that by finding and sharing her voice. My thoughts on the Okbaby Break-up | Misogyny and Teen Parents on Youtube I think in the first episode of this podcast I discussed my obsession with family bloggers as a teenager I think it stemmed from my childhood issues and I wanted to know the tea about taking care of kids because I was a babysitter and childcare assistant The first family I really watched after shaytards was ok baby and I want to say that as an adult I think all of these families are so fucked up and I don't watch family channels at all anymore because I think the whole premise is completely fucked up But I do retain a lot of useless information so I was really taken back by the comments on okbabys break up video This is all speculation Their relationship was so toxic and in my opinion Oscar created a lot of chaos for Kyras life He would get over vlogging and editing and it would be tossed over to her even though she had her own business, her own channel and also took a lot of care of the kids Oscar would get really into his hobbies and put the kids off onto babysitters instead of taking care of them He was just overall careless constantly getting injured injuring the kids because of his negligence and causing a lot of emotional distress to kyra I think back to when kyra accidentally had that instagram live of them fighting and how their relationship has been toxic from the start or also how I heard a clip about how the two didn't even enjoy spending time with each other? It was just really odd I feel like since they were teen parents they never really had time to grow up and realize what they actually wanted in a relationship or partner I think back to when they moved to Utah and robert and winter moved in with them or when kyla lived with them for a few years they never wanted to be alone I think this could also Be because they moved to Utah and there really wasnt anyone else there for them to be around but then I stop and think how much of all of that was solely for content? It also seems like Oscar has some skewed viewpoints in my life it seemed like he forced a lot of things on Levi at younger ages maybe to create independence but also so they could spend more time together he's very overbearing in a sense in the way that he treated Kyras emotional issues and anxiety like when he would force her to step out of her comfort zone and things like that I feel like that could become taxing on a person The comments were like poor Oscar kyra is so over the realtionship but wouldn't you be over it too? Hes kind of a man child and I think kyra has her faults too but she was just more mature in comparison and it seemed like she actually cared about having a career she started the channel had her solo channel created a brand like I feel like she made a lot of motherly sacrifices when Oscar was just kind of figuring his self out with no real responsibilities Like the traditional gender roles were switched but he didn't really do his I think this shows that their audience is mostly children because he's not an amazing parent in my eyes he is just physically present like the bar is so low he treated her like shit they were never really compatible on that level they both had different desires And the comment that irks me the most is the vasectomy comment because even I know that he didn't want anymore babies she didn't “force” him to get a vasectomy she wanted to have more kids its not healthy for her to do but I think she knew that if the relationship ended she would want to pursue them in the future I think its wack that people are saying that and there is a lot of misogyny in this situation and how people are viewing it #teamkyra --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/al4s/message
