Hello and welcome to the Friday ReFresh, a Ben and Travis podcast. I’m Ben from Ben and Travis and I have been working as a minister for 23 years and as a counselor for the last 10 years. I recognize that there are a lot of things in our world that impact
The Friday ReFresh podcast is truly a source of inspiration and spiritual energy in just five minutes. It's like a burst of motivation and positivity that leaves you feeling rejuvenated. I am incredibly grateful for the work that the hosts, Ben and Travis, do in their ministry, and I pray that God continues to bless them abundantly.
One of the best aspects of this podcast is how it manages to pack so much inspiration into such a short amount of time. In just five minutes, Ben and Travis share powerful messages that leave a lasting impact. Their words are uplifting, encouraging, and provide a sense of hope even in the midst of challenging times. The Friday ReFresh is indeed like an energy bite for the soul.
Another great aspect of this podcast is its ability to bring good clean fun into our lives. In a world where negativity seems to dominate, it is refreshing to find content that is both enjoyable and wholesome. Ben and Travis deliver their messages with humor and light-heartedness, which makes listening to their podcast an enjoyable experience.
While it may be difficult to find any negative aspects about this podcast, one small concern could be its length. Some listeners might wish for longer episodes to delve deeper into the topics discussed or explore more ideas. However, it's important to remember that the purpose of The Friday ReFresh is to provide a quick boost of motivation and encouragement, which it does excellently.
In conclusion, The Friday ReFresh podcast is truly remarkable in what it achieves within its short duration. It delivers inspiring messages while also bringing joy and laughter into our lives through good clean fun. The impact it has had on listeners, including myself, cannot be overstated. I am grateful for Ben and Travis's ministry and the positive influence they have on countless individuals every Friday.

The Friday ReFresh is brought to you by "The Adventures of Ben and Travis and the Joy Rider" children's book (www.benandtravis.com/books) As I drove through town the other day a red light stopped me at an intersection where there was an old wooden light pole standing at the corner. It had clearly been there a while based on the condition of the wood. It has undoubtedly weathered a lot of storms. It wasn't the light it gave, the power it conveyed through the wires running across the top, or the age of the wood that caught my attention though. What caused me to stop and stare at it for a few moments were the hundreds, if not thousands of nails, staples, and tacks protruding from its chipped and damaged wood. Welcome in to the Friday Refresh brought you you by the Adventures of Ben and Travis and the WorryCoaster children's book. Written by myself and Travis Creasy and expertly illustrated by our friend and brother, Jacob Hennigan. It is a feel good story of how to overcome anxiety and fear with a section in the back for parents, youth workers and teachers with helpful hints to keep the conversation going. Go to BenandTravis.com/books for more information. Challenge Youth Conference (www.cyconline.com) weekend is back again. For over 25 years this conference has taken place in the Smoky Mountains. For many years now it has been in the LeConte Center in Pigeon Forge and there have been close to 14,000 attendees some years. Our congregation will have over 40 in attendance this weekend and other congregations will have 100. Travis and I get to do some crazy activities and videos to get the event started and then we also participate in S.W.A.T. (Skits With A Truth) team. Most people who have attended, whether adults or teenagers, have found the weekend to be encouraging in their faith and they often leaved challenged to live a bold life for Christ. The speakers this year include Chris Miller, Lonnie Jones, Brad Montague, Craig Evans, and David Shannon. All men who will challenge listeners to live to a higher standard. The theme this year is Look Up! An easily relatable theme when in the smokies mountains of East Tennessee. Especially for those who have recently experienced loss...and even for those who have experienced it many years ago. Darkness and depression seem to go hand in hand. Many people in the northernmost state of Alaska experience depression during the long months of very little sunlight. It reminds us of just how important that big ball of fire is in the sky. Here in the south cool breezes are starting to blow, leaves are starting to fall, and holiday songs have started filling the air. There will be plenty of Christmas decorations going up and Holiday movies being watched on TV. Kids and adults around the country are starting to figure out what they want for Christmas. Retail stores are amping up and advertisement for all the things you want and need are already coming through loud and clear. The desire for more things is almost insatiable at times. But don't forget the holiday we celebrate this month. It stands, in my opinion, in stark contrast to the holidays that comes after. Thanksgiving is not about consuming but about appreciating. As you listen to this you may be trying to come down off a sugar rush or wake up after a long night of trick or treating and Halloween movies. Either way, I hope you found some fun with your family and friends. Speaking of family and friends I just want to make a plea for anyone listening to understand that you have people around you who love you. Whether you realize it or not. My heart has been extremely sad to hear recently of several people…some even as young middle schoolers who have chosen to take their life. It is impossible to know all the reasons why people ultimately choose suicide, but it usually boils down to something they are trying to communicate, control, or avoid. If you feel alone, like there is no one to listen, I promise you there are. Keep asking. Keep telling people until someone helps you. Speak to a school counselor. Speak to a parent. Speak to a minister. Speak to a friend. It has made me stop right in my tracks. And at other times it has made me move. It has entertained me. And yet it has been my avenue of communication. In some moments it has touched me down in my soul commanding all my attention. Yet in other moments it has simply hung around in the background of life barely being noticed. It has been my lone companion on many road trips. But it's also been present for every large gathering I've ever been to…from crowded worship halls to packed stadiums to excited conferences. It is one of the first things that soothes a new born baby. It is one of those things that bring peace to a dying person. And it's no wonder. Even our heart keeps a rhythm. Just a few months after conception the heart starts beating. It's the very sign of life. Thursday night I was invited to attend the Faulkner Benefit Dinner in Montgomery, Alabama. It was a really spectacular night for many reasons. There was fantastic food, some amazing singers, great waiters and waitresses consisting of students from Faulkner, and great fellowship with friends from all over. They also honored several adoptive parents of Alabama by allowing them their own walk of champions during the middle of the event. But of course the event could boast of one of its biggest crowds because the main speaker of the evening was Nick Saban. Senator Katie Britt entered with Nick Saban and spent the next hour asking him questions about football, family, priorities, and retirement. I was excited to attend because of football. Can't tell you how many hours Travis and I pretended to be Hannibal, Murdock, Face, or B. A. Baracus. Of course one the most famous, oft repeated lines of the show was said by their leader, Hannibal: “I love it when a plan comes together.” Usually after some wild plan that they concocted ended up working out for the good guys as a way of resolving some injustice done. The intro to the show stated: if you have a problem, if no one else can help, and you could find them maybe you can hire the A Team. What would you consider as the most powerful word? I'm sure there are plenty of arguments in the world over which word might carry the most weight. I know on some lists break them into powerful words that convey values or meaning in life: love, faith, wisdom, purpose, and peace. Others list words that are powerful in vocabulary: formulate, describe, or summarize. I want to give you a word that I have come to realize is extremely powerful. It is only three letters. It's not a word that blows you away with its eloquence. I suppose you could do a quick search online and come up with a variety of answers. There are thousands of stories of people who have done some great deed to make lives better. On the Ben and Travis podcasts we support works like Liberte that make a difference by helping kids who are less fortunate than so Many of us and by supplying Bibles. Other things like Walk for Water that supplies fresh water to people who otherwise have to walk up to four miles round trip to find it. But there are literally billions of stories around the globe that will never be heard. A couple of years ago I came across a small pamphlet called “the cookie under the doormat.” The interactive story inside goes something like this: Think about two kids. You pick the ages and the gender in your mind. They are simply for ease called A and B. The first day A and B bring you a cookie. They both want it and you have to decide who gets it. Of course you want to either break it in half or say neither but that isn't allowed. You must choose. There is always a price to pay. In 1776 a band of 56 men met in a hot room in Philadelphia Pennsylvania and officially made a Declaration of independence from England. The men who signed that Declaration were normal people. Lawyers, jurists, farmers, and merchants. Men of means and men of education. Signing the Declaration was crucial to the formation of this country I live in but detrimental to many of those men. If I heard that question, or some variation of it, once in the 6 hour drive to the beach I heard it 50 times. The youngest of the kids asked it the most. The others just looked on their map apps on the phone to figure it out. But every one of my five have been guilty of saying it at some point in the history of the car rides we have all had to endure. Truth is, I've been guilty of asking that question through the years too. Ive asked it about car rides, plane trips, boat rides, and mountain hikes. Destinations speak to us. John Muir. This past Saturday I got to enjoy a Nothing Day. We didn't have any formal plans so we slept in a little later than usual and then we went to our friends house to ride jeeps and four-wheelers and then walk the creek. We saw some local wildlife, looked for fossils, creek glass, smooth rocks for skipping, and interesting rocks for keeping. We chatted and mused over the way God's creativity or forces of God's nature had carved out this little creek among the towering bluffs surrounding it. The kids challenged their bravery by jumping off large boulders into the creek below. The day ended with burgers, dogs, and some time around the fire pit. Nothing days have become a favorite. We live a pretty fast-paced existence with appointments and kid activities so while they are few and far between there is certainly a desire to make them more of the norm. You can contact them at (256) 272-2007 One of my favorite things to do as I drive is to listen to podcasts. But not any old podcast. I like true stories. I like stories of people who face hard things head on and find a way through it. This started with one that my cohost of the Helping Healing Humor podcast put me on to. It was called “A Short History Of” and it chronicles all sorts of interesting historical events, people, battles, or places. Usually those things included elements of difficult times for someone or a bunch of someone's. You can contact them at (256) 272-2007 The other day I was driving my kids to school and my 7 year old son began talking about how he dreads moving to the next grade in school. His lament went something like this: “what if I CAN'T do the work!” My immediate…almost visceral response was “don't say the word can't—can't is poison.” I'm not exactly sure where that came from because I've never said that before or even heard that sentence. However, I'm learning more and more the sad power of the word can't. It is a silly sounding question. “If I am sick, hurting, or struggling, then why would I not want to be made well?” There are doctors offices, treatment centers, rehab facilities, counselor's offices, and hospitals scattered across the landscape of this country. It would seem that alone is an argument for the fact that people WANT to be made well. But in the counseling world I'm afraid this is a harder question than we often give it credit for. Now, don't get me wrong, most people are searching for something different when they make a call to a counselor. They want relief from whatever complication they are facing in life. And yet, it has been the case that many people end up leaving counseling still not well. Some of that could be the fault of the practitioner. I'm not going to claim that counselors do things perfectly. Some could be that there is a need for a different kind of treatment — possibly psychiatric treatments. But sometimes being well is scary. It was November of 1939 and the country of Finland was staring down the barrel of a war machine of unimaginable power. Only three months before the German forces, led by Adolf Hitler, had invaded Poland, triggering a declaration of war. Now, the people of Finland were facing their own war with the Soviet Army lead by Joseph Stalin. They had rejected a proposal from the Soviet Union to move some of their shared border, give up some of their land, tear down their fortifications, and lease a Peninsula to build a military base. As the Soviets prepare to strike no one believes the skirmish would last more than 2 weeks. The Soviets had 3X more soldiers, 5X more artillery, 30X more aircraft, and 100X more tanks. On paper this would be a rout. And little more than a blip on the radar of world history. There are standards for weight, height, and volume. There are even ways that people attempt to measure success. But influence is pretty hard to determine. Because influence is an open ended concept. Influence cannot be turned off. Influence cannot be contained. Influence cannot be measured simply because it's still growing even as you attempt to put it on the scales. In fact Stephen King once said, “We never know which lives we influence, or when or why!” You cannot measure that for which you don't have the full product. Only heaven knows. Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen…but do you recall the most famous reindeer of all? Of course you do….you've sung the song…you've watched the claymation…and you have probably read the book — or some variation of the story, hundreds of times. You have seen the decorations in every town across the globe… But do you know the story behind the story? If you haven't, then prepare yourself, it's coming. It might be a round table discussion at Thanksgiving…or a DJ on the radio…or someone in a class at school or church. But at some point you are likely to be asked what you are thankful for. And I'm confident that without much prompting you could rattle off a long list of things for which to show gratitude. Nine years ago kenya and I attended the very first Ministering to Youth Conference (M2YConference.com) in Orlando, Florida. My friend, Brian Staron, had invited me to join the board for this new event to encourage anyone who worked with young people in the church. I gladly accepted and it's been rolling along ever since. We did Orlando one year, Chattanooga one year, Pigeon Forge for 5 years, Knoxville last year and then Heritage Christian in Florence AL for this year's conference. Who Not What Welcome in to the Friday Refresh brought to you by the Good Old Fashioned Dislike podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/good-old-fashioned-dislike/id1643163790) If you love football and rivalries intrigue you, then the Good Ole Fashioned Dislike Podcast is for you. Each week Travis picks a match up to highlight and the panel decides what they love and hate about each team—mostly based on non-football aspects of the school or town or history. So check it out every Monday morning wherever you find your podcasts. ———————- Speaking of football. I honestly can't remember a time when I didn't love football. The only time I actually played organized football was at Freed-Hardeman and it was an intramural flag football team. But I remember watching Monday Night football with my dad and pretending to run into the couches in the living room like they were the defensive line. I'm not sure which wore out faster — the couches or my dads nerves. There has been a trend in social media and modern culture to exclaim the statement: “Best Day Ever.” It is often used on days of celebration or after an amazing event or experience. Maybe it was a day on the lake. Maybe it was time at a ballgame with kids. Perhaps it was a day laying out on the beach, or driving through the snow-capped mountains of Alaska. I'm fairly certain I've seen “best day ever” used to describe the birth of babies. Certainly birth is a time of celebration. Smiles and giggles. Goo goo and gah gahs. Smooth skin and perfect little humans being brought into a happy family. Best Day Ever. But there is actually a day that is better than the day of one's birth and it might surprise you. That seems normal for any pitcher that is slinging fastballs in the nineties as they live the dream of playing in the Major League. For Jim Abbott it was a little more complicated. While most pitchers hide the ball inside their glove for the majority of that time, Abbott had to hide his behind the back of the glove. That seems an awkward proposition for anyone who understands how that process works. But Jim threw with his left hand. He also caught with his left hand. My kids have followed me on their bellies to the back of a small cave. They have loaded into cars and buses and planes and boats with me over and over. My kids have jumped into the water because I was there. My kids have looked for me when they were playing sports or performing in the arts programs. They follow because they trust. They trust us as parents to give them love. They trust us to give them a smile. They trust us to keep them safe. I love the fact that this young man loved his father and wanted to adventure with him. It's not been too many weeks ago that my son and I adventured in Alaska together and my wife and daughter got to adventured in Africa. It breaks my heart that the Dawood family adventure ended in tragedy. So, where are you leading your children? What example are you giving them? What path are you setting them on? They will follow. But each one heard messages that every person needs to hear. “I believe in you” “You are worthy and strong” “I am proud of you.” Happy Father's Day to you amazing dads out there. We have seen some spectacular things over the last week. Mountains, oceans, eagles, bears, caribou, moose, dall sheep, glaciers, boats, trains, and most importantly, God's people. When he made Alaska, he showed out for sure. One of God's people here in Alaska is Norman Lowell (Low-ul). We didn't get to meet him, but we've heard a lot of people talk about him while we were here. Norman came to Alaska in 1958. He was an aspiring artist looking for a wonderful place that would give him plenty of inspiration. https://www.normanlowellgallery.org/ Links mentioned in this episode: http://www.benandtravis.com http://www.facebook.com/groups/benandtravis http://www.patreon.com/benandtravis Reframing Hope Book https://www.benandtravis.com/books Helping. We don't know if it ever actually occurred with anyone…much less that it occurred with James the Less. However, anyone who has wrestled with the question of why we suffer while attempting to live faithfully in Christ would have been immediately struck by Jesus and Little James' conversation in the Chosen's scene in season three, episode two. It was something I had looked forward to since I had read the book Wild at Heart by John Eldridge. It wasn't exactly about parenting but he talked so much about the adventures he had taken his boys on. Rafting and hunting and hiking—He lived in Colorado and the great outdoors were a way of life. I also remember the enormous weight of finding out I would be a dad and thinking of King Solomon's prayer to God for wisdom to lead his people in 2 Chronicles 1:10. I knew I would need help.
