The “Happy Eating Podcast†was created after we couldn’t find the information that we needed for ourselves and our families. Join us as we break down the connection between food and mental wellness as we explore how food, diet, supplements, and daily habits can make for truly Happy Eating.
Carolyn Williams PhD, RD & Brierley Horton, MS, RD
The Happy Eating Podcast is a true gem that I stumbled upon after being diagnosed with two inflammatory diseases. As someone in need of making changes to my diet for the betterment of my health, this podcast has been an absolute game-changer. What initially drew me in was the book "Meals That Heal," which provided valuable information about nourishing the body. However, it was the podcast hosted by Brierley and Carolyn that truly took my understanding to the next level. Not only do they provide evidence-based research on achieving optimal mental health through everyday habits, but their honest and relatable conversations make me feel empowered and motivated to continue on my health journey.
One of the best aspects of The Happy Eating Podcast is how Brierley and Carolyn expertly navigate through a plethora of research and present it in an easily digestible manner (pun intended). As a registered dietitian and registered nurse myself, I appreciate their ability to break down complex scientific concepts into relatable terms. Their "mom-truth moments" are both refreshing and informative, providing a candid look into their personal experiences. Additionally, their professional opinions on each topic add further credibility to the podcast.
While it's difficult to find any flaws in this fantastic podcast, if I were to nitpick, I would suggest that occasionally the hosts could dive even deeper into specific topics. However, given that they cover a wide range of subjects related to science and nutrition already, this is just a minor suggestion for improvement.
In conclusion, The Happy Eating Podcast is an absolute must-listen for anyone interested in achieving optimal mental health through their diet. Brierley and Carolyn bring a wealth of knowledge, personal experience, empathy, and warmth to each episode. By delving into important topics surrounding nutrition and mental wellness in a relatable and light-hearted manner, they have created an invaluable resource for individuals looking to improve their overall well-being. I am eagerly anticipating future episodes from these wonderful hosts and cannot recommend this podcast enough.

You may be familiar with what we're talking about today. And others of you may not. But I guarantee you know people who are using them. We're talking about oral nicotine pouches, one of the most popular ones being the brand Zyn. They're touted as being a healthier tobacco-free alternative to cigarettes, vapes, and chewing tobacco, but are they really? Today we're taking a closer look at oral nicotine pouches, as well as the surprising effects they can have on your mental health, particularly ADHD. Many of us walk into our menopause journey blindly—and it's not until things like out of the ordinary stress, ADHD-like symptoms when it comes to your ability to focus and concentrate, and seemingly overnight weight gain, that we scramble for control and often realize that our usual go-to tips and tricks don't work like they used to. While there's no one-size-fits-all solution, certain diet and exercise approaches can help greatly. In today's episode, we're bringing back a favorite guest—Jenna Braddock who is a registered dietitian and menopause expert. With her, we delve into the science of perimenopause and menopause and explore straightforward nutritional and lifestyle approaches, like how much protein do you need? How can you hit that target? What type of physical activity is the most effective to get rid of that belly fat? Best of all, since each of us is going through perimenopause, we share our personal experiences about what's worked for us—and what hasn't. This episode was developed in partnership with/in collaboration with the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, a contractor to the Beef Checkoff. Our Expert Jenna Braddock, RDN, CSSD Jenna Braddock is a Florida-based Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD), and ACSM Certified Personal Trainer with a passion for helping individuals live with greater energy, purpose, and performance. If you live in an area with pollen, you're dealing with histamines whether you know it or not. They're what's responsible for your runny nose, red eyes, itchy throat, etc. But histamines are also found in food, which for some can lead to high levels in the body and cause symptoms like headaches, bloating, and eczema. You may hear this referred to as histamine intolerance. Spoiler alert: if you're in perimenopause you're more likely to start experiencing some histamine intolerance. In today's episode, we're talking about what histamines are, what foods they're in, what histamine intolerance looks like, and what you can do to balance out the histamine levels in your body. Part of the “Make America Healthy Again” initiative is calling for the use of beef tallow instead of seed oils like canola, grapeseed, etc. And some major fast food chains have pledged to switch from frying in oil to frying with beef tallow. We've all experienced picky eaters—whether through friends, our kids, or maybe even you yourself are a picky eater. But when does picky eating crossover to extreme pickiness that could put your health at risk? And is there anything we can do to improve that pickiness? In today's episode, we're talking with registered dietitian and eating disorder expert, Kate Sayre, about a lesser-known eating disorder called ARFID. What is it? What are the common signs and symptoms? And how can you actually help someone who has ARFID? What's “natural” and expected when it comes to a healthy aging brain? Is it normal to walk into a room and forget why you went in there? What about struggling to recall the exact word you want to use to articulate a concept? In today's episode, we're breaking down the difference between what's typical for the aging brain (aka what you shouldn't be worried about) and what's considered a sign of mild cognitive impairment or even Alzheimer's. Research tells us that politics—and thinking about political events—can be harmful to our mental wellness. So how do we get through this current political season of life? And how do we navigate friendships when we don't align politically? In today's episode, friendship expert, fellow podcaster and book author, Danielle Jackson advises us on what to do—and what not to do. Learn More About Our Guest Danielle Bayard Jackson is a female friendship coach and educator who speaks nationally about the science of women's platonic connections. She is also the author of Fighting for Our Friendships (May 2024). Danielle's coaching business, Friend Forward, is dedicated to teaching women how to create and maintain better female friendships, and her expertise has been featured in The New York Times, NBC News, Psychology Today, Wall Street Journal, Oprah Magazine, Good Morning America, and a host of other media outlets. A former high school teacher, Danielle now uses her teaching skills and leverages her background to study what the latest research has to say about women's cooperation, communication, and conflict. As a member of the American Sociological Association, she uses the latest research to create tangible strategies to help women create more depth in their platonic relationships. Companies like TikTok, the NBA, NFL, and Etsy have all booked Danielle as a speaker to address the topic of connection psychology. She's even served as Bumble's resident friendship expert and spokesperson for its new app Bumble for Friends. Danielle shares her insight weekly on The Friend Forward Podcast, has several viral videos on social media, and has written for Insider and Harvard Business Review. You've likely heard about the dangers in some of your cookware and you may have even changed out a few for nontoxic pieces. But did you know there are other risky items you might want to swap out, too? Turns out, your kitchen is a major source of microplastics—food storage containers, of course, but also cooking utensils, sandwich bags, even certain sponges. In today's episode, we're talking about where those microplastics lurk, what the health effects of microplastics are, and how you can reduce your exposure with some simple swaps. Studies Referenced Include: Beyond the food on your plate: Investigating sources of microplastic contamination in home kitchens. The best (and cheapest) therapy for those small things that get under your skin is sometimes a good venting session so you can get it off your chest and move on with your life! And if you're not privy to the first-hand vent-a-thon, then being a fly on the wall listening is hopefully equally therapeutic and also maybe entertaining. Surely you've heard about weighted vests, right? It's hard to miss the recent uptick in people buying and walking in weighted vests. But are they worth it? Do they help with weight loss, do they increase your fat burning, can they improve your bone health, or are they just a fad like Suzanne Somer's Thigh Master once was? After we complained in a Rant Therapy episode about seeing them everywhere, we decided we needed to dig into the research and assess their legitimacy. We can't wait to share what we found! The location of your headache isn't a foolproof way to diagnose the cause, but it can be a good starting point for figuring out the root of the problem. Is the pain on the side of your head, at the back, throbbing around your hairline, or –perhaps the worst – in your eye. Unfortunately, some of those chemical ingredients are endocrine disruptors or carcinogens. So how do you know if you're using products with these so-called “toxic” ingredients? Shannon Garcia, registered dietitian and an expert on reducing the toxin load in your home, is talking us through ingredients to avoid; which products are the biggest offenders when it comes to toxin exposure; and her favorite safer brands when it comes to skincare, cleaning products, laundry, and more.
