March is National Nutrition Month and "beef" wants to be a part of that conversation! Shalene McNeill, PhD, RDN, NCBA’s executive director of Nutrition Science, Health & Wellness, along with Tammy Vaassen, executive director of the Wisconsin Beef Council both want you to know the truth of beef protein and what it brings to your diet. Driving beef demand begins with research, and recent results from a study conducted by the University of Arkansas for Medical Services (UAMS) confirm that not all proteins are created equal. The research, funded by the Beef Checkoff through its contractor, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, was designed to better understand how animal- and plant-based proteins compare in promoting muscle protein synthesis. Muscle protein synthesis is the natural metabolic process in which older, less functional muscle protein fibers are replaced with newer, more functional fibers to support the maintenance or production of muscle mass. Measurements of muscle protein synthesis are an indicator of muscle health and research continues to support the role of healthy muscle tissue in the prevention of numerous diseases. The research reveals that ounce for ounce, beef outperforms a soy-based meat alternative (SBMA) patty in stimulating muscle protein synthesis. While soy and beef are both high-quality proteins, it takes twice the amount of the SBMA with 66% more calories to elicit the same impact on muscle health. You can find out more about the health benefits of beef - regardless of age at beeftips.com or the National Cattlemen's Beef site.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Season 5, EPISODE 226 Data Decides The Bulls At Keller Broken Heart Ranch & Beef Checkoff Updates Using Technology At Keller Broken Heart Ranch For Bull Selection Genetics That Combine Data & Functionality At Keller Broken Heart Ranch, great cattle are more than just numbers—they must also look and function well. This philosophy has produced standout donor cows like WS Miss Sugar C4 and BarCK 106Z, whose offspring consistently lead the herd and excel in other breeding programs nationwide. These cows and their progeny have shaped the Keller herd's genetics, with their descendants now leading the charge in improving carcass traits and maintaining physical quality. Sons of these donors are used in AI programs, and daughters have become foundational to future breeding success. A Vision For Continuous Improvement The Kellers embrace the mindset of lifelong learners, always striving to improve their herd. By mating cattle on paper and analyzing performance data, leveraging RightMate by Allied Genetic Resources, the Keller Broken Heart Ranch achieves uniformity in their herd without sacrificing performance. Focus on data-driven decision-making has become the cornerstone of their success. This commitment to innovation and adaptability ensures that Keller Broken Heart Ranch remains a leader in the Simmental and SimAngus industries, producing cattle that excel in data, performance, and visual appeal. The Future Outlook  The ranch remains steadfast in its mission: to improve the herd. By annually selling 120 bulls and 80 heifers, the Kellers stay dedicated to producing cattle with high marks on the ASA (American Simmental Association) All-Purpose Index (API) and Terminal Index (TI). Some Say The DOGE Should Look At The Beef Checkoff According to Meating Place, the Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund United Stockgrowers of America or R-CALF, CEO Bill Bullard encouraged ranchers and cattlemen to reach out to President Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to request the agency audit the USDA's Beef Checkoff Program.  Bullard said that we've long argued that the beef checkoff program, which is a USDA program that requires cattle producers to pay $1 for every head of cattle they sell; and it collects about $70 million each year, which he says, much of that comes from producers who do not support the mandatory government program.  He went on to say that while the beef checkoff program is supposed to fund education, promotion and research for beef, and not fund lobbying, evidence of abuse has surfaced and an independent audit report found that $216,000 of mandatory producer contributions had been misspent. The Beef Checkoff has strong cattle producer support, according to The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA), and undergoes annual audits and posts that information on their website. NCBA Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane told Meating Place that the Beef Checkoff is an example of individual farmers and ranchers coming together to create a program that conducts research, educates consumers and builds demand for beef with a return on investment to producers of $13.41 for every $1 invested—all while operating with annual financial audits, strict oversight and at no cost to American taxpayers. R-CALF is a non-profit organization serving as a voice for independent cow-calf and sheep producers and feeders across America. NCBA is a non-profit trade association representing U.S. cattle producers.  DOGE is a temporary contracted organization under the United States Digital Service, which has asked the public to contact the organization with ideas for “reducing waste, fraud and abuse.” Imports Of Mexican Cattle Are Expected To Resume  A temporary suspension of imports of Mexican cattle into the United States is ending, according to several reports. The Mexican Agriculture Minister said that USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service  or  (APHIS) signed the first memorandums to allow the suspension to be lifted. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) thanked the Trump administration and USDA for “working swiftly” to protect the U.S cattle supply from the threat of New World Screwworm, which sparked the import suspension late last year. APHIS has developed a comprehensive protocol that involves layers of veterinary inspections and treatment to prevent the spread of screwworm and other types of ticks and insects. It's well-established that nutrient adequacy in adolescence affects physical development and academic performance, as well as long-term health – yet research is woefully lacking for this life stage and dietary guidance lacks specificity for these unique needs. In fact, the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans noted that the nutrient gaps among adolescents are so significant, that this “constellation of potential nutritional risk factors” is a public health challenge. To help address this gap, the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, on behalf of the Beef Checkoff, partnered with Dr. Mario Ferruzzi and his team at the Arkansas Children's Nutrition Center, one of 6 USDA national nutrition centers, to convene 50 leading nutrition scientists, physicians, registered dietitians, and public health experts. McDonald's seeks a declaration of the conspiracy, triple damages, and a permanent injunction to stop the alleged collusion. EPISODE 204 DETAILS Program Cattle, Beef Checkoff, Beef Industry News  Cattle Buyers Continue To Recommend Program Feeder Cattle Program Feeder Cattle, Buying & Selling Tips Many buyers are recommending that those producers that are enrolling in various programs to assist in marketing feeder cattle need to continue with those programs because they could be setting the benchmark of prices in the future. Mike Bolinger with Superior Livestock joins us again discussing program cattle, his thoughts on the Beef Checkoff and other various industry topics. Latest Beef Checkoff & Industry News Export Federation Warns Of Port Strike Impacts Of Beef Exports are heavily dependent on the Eastern ports threatened by an Oct. 1 strike deadline, but the ramifications of a halt in shipments would be serious for beef and pork industries, too, the U.S. Meat Export Federation warned late last week. USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom said, “The three big West Coast ports are the leading outlets for U.S. beef and pork exports. That doesn't mean the East and Gulf coast isn't important. If we look at total waterborne exports of pork, about 45% of those go through the East and Gulf coast ports, and beef side about 30% of the waterborne exports.” He pointed in particular to “quite a high percentage of very high value chilled beef that goes out from the East Coast in particular for destinations like Europe and the Middle East. He said we can't overstate the importance of the East Coast and Gulf Coast ports. Even though the West Coast is larger, still a very significant quantity is exported through the East and Gulf coasts. Halstrom said any halt in port activity “will back up the supply chain immediately,: and redirecting meat exports to the West Coast is “by no means a long-term solution at all,” because a vast flow of grain and non-farm commodities and goods would also be left without port capacity. He said we're challenged to export all of our products today using all the ports, so we cannot afford a shutdown in any part of the supply chain. Plant Based Diets Are More Expensive Originally posted in Alt-Meat and then again in MeatlingPlace.Com, consuming a plant-based diet that is nutritionally equivalent to one that includes animal proteins is “considerably” (34% to 45%) more expensive than an omnivorous diet, putting numbers to one complaint that's been voiced about plant-based diets for years, according to new research from New Zealand's Massey University. As published in the journal “Frontiers in Nutrition,” the article reviews recent modeling studies using Linear Programming to determine the respective roles of animal- and plant-sourced foods in developing a least-cost diet in the United States and New Zealand. The abstract said that “In both economies, least-cost diets were found to include animal-based foods, such as milk, eggs, fish and seafood, to meet the energy and nutrient requirements of healthy adults at the lowest retail cost. The article said , the costliest culprits in transitioning from an animal- and plant-containing least-cost diet to a plant-only based least-cost diet are mostly vitamins and minerals. In conclusion, “Modeling of least-cost diets that consist exclusively of plant-based foods is feasible, but at a higher daily diet cost, and these diets are often close to limiting several key nutrients. 2024 Stockmanship & Stewardship Tour, Hamburg, New York The Stockmanship & Stewardship Tour is coming to Hamburg, New York and surrounding states October 25 - 26 at the Agriculture Discovery Center In Hamburg, New York.  Participants will explore a range of informative topics such as carcass quality, grazing management, consumer insights, and more, all designed to elevate your operations and boost profitability. In action at the end of its September 4-5 meeting in Denver, Colorado, the Beef Promotion Operating Committee (BPOC) approved Checkoff funding for a total of 12 “Authorization Requests” – or grant proposals – for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2024. The committee, which includes 10 producers and importers from the Cattlemen's Beef Board and 10 producers from the Federation of State Beef Councils, also recommended full Cattlemen's Beef Board approval of a budget amendment to reflect the split of funding between budget categories affected by their decisions. Eight contractors and two subcontractors brought 12 Authorization Requests worth approximately $46.8 million to the BPOC this week, approximately $8.8 million more than the funds available from the CBB budget. “We're consistently impressed with the proposals that our contractors bring forward each year, and choosing which initiatives to fund is a real challenge,” said Andy Bishop, CBB and BPOC chair. “Our budget amounts to slightly less each year because of inflation. To put it in perspective, a dollar in 1985 is worth just 35 cents¹ today. That means we simply don't have the buying power that we had when this program first started.  “As we expected, the Authorization Requests we reviewed this week were full of new ideas and innovative approaches supporting the Checkoff's core programs of research, promotion, foreign marketing, industry information, consumer information and producer communications. Our committee did a great job of balancing our budget and distributing our limited funds in what we believe is the most optimal way possible. I personally thank our contractors and committee members for all their hard work, and I look forward to future Checkoff successes throughout FY25.” In the end, the BPOC approved proposals from eight national beef organizations for funding through the FY25 Cattlemen's Beef Board budget, as follows: American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture - $600,000 Cattlemen's Beef Board - $1,800,000 Foundation for Meat and Poultry Research and Education - $600,000 Meat Import Council of America / Northeast Beef Promotion Initiative - $900,000 National Cattlemen's Beef Association - $25,700,000 National Institute for Animal Agriculture - $95,000 North American Meat Institute - $280,000 United States Meat Export Federation - $8,000,000 Broken out by budget component – as outlined by the Beef Promotion and Research Act of 1985 – the FY25 Plan of Work for the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board budget includes: $9,120,000 for promotion programs, including beef and veal campaigns focusing on beef's nutritional value, eating experience, convenience, and production. $8,600,000 for research programs focusing on pre- and post-harvest beef safety, scientific affairs, nutrition, sustainability, product quality, culinary technical expertise, and consumer perceptions. $7,500,000 for consumer information programs, including Northeast influencer outreach and public relations initiatives; national consumer public relations, including nutrition-influencer relations and work with primary- and secondary-school curriculum directors nationwide to get accurate information about the beef industry into classrooms of today's youth. Additional initiatives include outreach and engagement with food, culinary, nutrition and health thought leaders; media and public relations efforts; and supply chain engagement. $2,955,000 for industry information programs, including dissemination of accurate information about the beef industry to counter misinformation from other groups, as well as funding for Checkoff participation in the annual national industrywide symposium about antibiotic use. Additional efforts in this program area include beef advocacy training and issues/crisis management and response.  $8,000,000 for foreign marketing and education, focusing on 13 regions, representing more than 90 countries around the world. $1,800,000 for producer communications, which includes investor outreach using national communications and direct communications to producers and importers about Checkoff results. Elements of this program include ongoing producer listening and analysis; industry collaboration and outreach; and continued development of a publishing strategy and platform and a state beef council content hub. The full fiscal 2025 Cattlemen's Beef Board budget is approximately $42.2 million. Separate from the Authorization Requests, other expenses funded include $305,000 for program evaluation; $750,000 program development; $200,000 for Checkoff education resources; $575,000 for USDA oversight; $220,000 for state services; $200,000 supporting services and litigation; and approximately $2.0 million for CBB administration. The fiscal 2025 program budget represents an increase of slightly less than 1.0% percent, or $150,000, from the $42.1 million FY24 budget. For more information about the Beef Checkoff and its programs, including promotion, research, foreign marketing, industry information, consumer information and safety, contact the Cattlemen's Beef Board at 303-220-9890 or visit DrivingDemandForBeef.com. ABOUT THE BEEF CHECKOFF The Beef Checkoff Program was established as part of the 1985 Farm Bill. The Checkoff assesses $1 per head on the sale of live domestic and imported cattle, in addition to a comparable assessment on imported beef and beef products. States may retain up to 50 cents on the dollar and forward the other 50 cents per head to the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board, which administers the national Checkoff program, subject to USDA approval. 1 Source: January 2023 Consumer Price Index Inflation Calculator   Anthrax Confirmed In Carbon County, Wyoming According to the High Plains Journal, Anthrax has been confirmed in multiple beef herds located in Carbon County, Wyoming. This is the first confirmed anthrax in Wyoming cattle since the 1970s. Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory confirmed the diagnosis late Aug. 31.  Both WSVL and private veterinarians were essential in the diagnosis of anthrax impacting several herds in the region.  Dr. Hallie Hasel, Wyoming state veterinarian, said protecting animal and human health is critical upon diagnosis of a zoonotic disease.  She went on to say that the Wyoming Livestock Board will continue working with producers and private veterinarians to reduce further spread and limit human exposure through recommendations for carcass disposal and vaccination. Anthrax vaccine is approved for multiple livestock species and highly effective. Anthrax is a bacterial disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, a naturally occurring organism with worldwide distribution. The spore-forming bacteria may survive in the soil for years to decades, resulting in sporadic outbreaks which usually occur after periods of drought followed by heavy rain.  Domestic and wild animals may become infected when they breathe or ingest spores in contaminated soil, plants, or water. Clinical signs of anthrax in livestock include sudden death, weakness, staggering, difficulty breathing, fever, and bloody diarrhea.   Owners of livestock experiencing clinical signs consistent with anthrax or sudden death should contact their private veterinary practitioner.  U.K. Sheep, Cattle Industries On Alert After Bluetongue Virus Detected An outbreak of bluetongue virus on England's North Sea coast has British agriculture officials and the cattle and sheep industries scrambling to contain the insect-borne disease, which can devastate ruminant herds. The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) said Tuesday that 27 animals on 10 farms have been confirmed with bluetongue infection. Authorities this week extended restrictions on transport of livestock to all of Norfolk and Suffolk counties and part of Essex. The United Kingdom, which had a small bluetongue outbreak mostly among cattle from November to March, has been on alert for weeks due to a larger ongoing outbreak across the North Sea in the Netherlands, amid warm summer weather when the biting midges that spread the virus are most active. The insect vectors can be blown by wind across the North Sea from continental Europe. Goats and deer are also at risk of bluetongue, which can be fatal or cause infertility in livestock. U.K. authorities say there is no risk to people or food supplies. The first new case in England was detected on Aug. 26 in a sheep on a farm near Haddiscoe in Norfolk, about 150 miles across open water from the Netherlands. A 20-kilometer (12.4-mile) temporary control zone was initially ordered, and within four days authorities saw evidence of “local transmission.” World meat prices down from July, still up on year The Food and Agriculture Organization's Meat Price Index averaged 119.5 points in August, down 0.7% from July, but still 3.7% higher than the same time last year. The United Nations released the FAO Food Price Index for August last week. Poultry meat prices fell due to Brazil's temporary export suspension following a Newcastle disease outbreak, despite the issue being resolved. Global pig meat prices dropped for a second month, driven by weak import demand and ample supply, the report said. Ovine meat prices saw a slight dip after three months of increases, mainly due to reduced Chinese imports. However, bovine meat prices edged up slightly, influenced by seasonal declines in slaughter animal supplies in Oceania. Today I have Hope Brandt, owner of Hopewell Health on the show. Hope and I met at an event sponsored by the Beef Checkoff in Denver and we discovered we have the same podcast producer! We decided to be on each other's podcasts this week; go give her podcast, That's Healthy?! a follow! In today's episode Hope covers the frameworks she's developed of a PEC Plate (protein, energy, color) and Two Mac Snacks that help with balance, nourishment, and satisfaction. She'll dive into how to go about changing body composition, build muscle, and how to get the right amount of servings of fruits, vegetables, and protein. We also talk about the importance of protein (specifically beef!) in kids. Hope is all about positive outcomes and getting healthy results.  Hope is a Registered Dietitian. She first attended LSU and received a degree in mass communications and started working in marketing. The nine-to-five life wasn't a good fit so she looked for something she's passionate about and also allows scheduling freedom. She went back to school to become a Registered Dietitian. She wants to help eliminate unrealistic body expectations and help better the relationship women have with their bodies, food, and nutrition.  Resources & Links: Evlo Fitness Join The Directory Of The West Get our FREE resource for Writing a Strong Job Description Get our FREE resource for Making the Most of Your Internship Email us at hello@ofthewest.co Join the Of The West Email List List your jobs on Of The West   Connect with Hope Brandt: Follow on Instagram @hopewell_health Visit her website Listen to her podcast That's Healthy?!   Connect with Jessie: Follow on Instagram @ofthewest.co and @mrsjjarv Follow on Facebook @jobsofthewest Check out the Of The West website Be sure to subscribe/follow the show so you never miss an episode!  Learn more about your ad choices. EPISODE 37 DETAILS NEW INDEPENDENT STUDY FINDS EACH NATIONAL BEEF CHECKOFF DOLLAR RETURNS $13.41 TO PRODUCERS & IMPORTERS  Checkoff Dollars Return $13.41 To Producers A recent economic analysis of the national Beef Checkoff program found that each dollar invested in its demand-driving activities for the most recent five-year period (2019–2023) positively impacted domestic beef demand and U.S. beef exports, creating a total financial benefit of $13.41 for the producers and importers who pay into the program. Beef's Checkoff Dollars Return On Investment (ROI) In addition to calculating a ROI of $13.41, the ROI analysis enabled the study to simulate market conditions for beef demand in the absence of national Beef Checkoff investments. For the most recent five-year period, 2019-2023, had there not been any investments in national Beef Checkoff demand-driving activities: Total domestic beef demand would have been 2.4 billion pounds (8.5%) lower per year than actual results. The steer price would have been 7.8% lower per year than actual results. U.S. export beef demand would have been 372 million pounds (11.5%) lower than actual results in the seven major importing countries included in the study. PRICES FOR MEAT, FOOD HIT BY INFLATION  Summer BBQ Season Hit By Food Inflation Inflation is leading American consumers to look for ways to save money on meat and other ingredients that make up the traditional summer BBQ, yet they are still willing to pay for an experience that leads to good memories for their families, according to experts from Rabobank. Food Inflation Over The Past 5 Years In the past five years, there has been an increase in prices due to agricultural industry effects from severe drought, higher restaurant overhead and wages, rising interest rates, geopolitical crises, and higher inflation throughout the supply chain. This has led to a food cost increase of 27% from 2019 to the end of 2023. Adding another 2.4% for 2024 leads to 32% inflation during the past five years.  The food cost increase over the past five years led to 32% inflation.
