The term Abba can bring different ideas to mind, depending on your association with the word, your relationship with your father, and maybe your understanding of what the word even means. Join Magan & Judy as they look at how it was understood by people in Biblical times and some of the ways it's understood by people today. In the end, this word--used only 3 times in the New Testament--was likely used to reveal a side of God that the Jewish people had a hard time seeing: a relational God who wanted to know them.

Judy & Magan have talked about the far reaching consequences of sin, but today they're discussing what happened when Sarai & Abram decided to go ahead with God's plan without Him. Listen in as they talk about the generations dealing with the consequence of that choice.

Spring cleaning can be a very cathartic experience, but how often do we "spring clean" our spiritual lives? What could that look like? Magan & Judy share their thoughts on taking the broom to our spiritual lives, starting with the basics of the heart, mouth, & mind. 

The argument presented from an atheist was this: If you truly believe that there is a heaven and a hell, how much do you have to hate someone to not try to save them? Magan & Judy chat about what it looks like to witness effectively in the 21st century and what holds us back from doing that. 

What are your biases? What do you use to measure a person? Magan and Judy talk about this while studying Job 11-13. Job's friends aren't sure what to make of him because they're focused on the outside appearance and the circumstances surrounding Job's life at the moment. 

We can't always see the bigger picture (what we call the telescope view). Sometimes bad things happen or answers are slow in coming because there's a battle being fought beyond what we can see. This week, Magan & Judy discuss some of the spiritual warfare happening around Job and the very human judgment happening right in front of him. 

Despite his friend's well-intentioned words, Job is still in the depths of grief. This week, Magan & Judy discuss Job's ability to--even in the depths of despair--find comfort in the Holy One.

Judy and Magan share some personal experiences with their own church hurts and offer some insight on how to move forward.

When we go through the trials of life, it's helpful to have friends around to support you. Sometimes those friends, though well-intentioned, say things that aren't exactly supportive. Job had a few of those friends. In Job 4 & 5, we meet Eliphaz, a friend with the best of intentions, but who lacked true perspective. In this episode, Judy & Magan discuss his intentions, his delivery of his support, and ways we can be supportive when we see someone in the valleys of life.

The grieving process can be a long and windy road full of anger, depression, and negative self-talk. Job wasn't exempt from these. Magan and Judy work their way through Job 3, discussing Job's grieving process and sharing some stories of their own.

In the new series When Bad Things Happen to Good People, Judy and Magan are discussing the book of Job. Job was a man who seemingly did everything right. Why would God allow him to go through such hardship? In these first two chapters, we get some background info on Job himself, and we watch as he loses what seems to be everything of importance and begins his own physical suffering. 

We often feel justified in our dishonor of people--those we disagree with, those who have behaved horribly, and those who dishonor us. But what does the Bible say? Magan and Judy chat about what honor really is and what it means to show honor from a Biblical perspective.

"From the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks." (Luke 6:45) "As a man thinks, so he is." (Prov. 23:7) "The tongue has the power of life and death." (Prov. 18:21) Judy and Magan discuss the power of a word and its impact on our lives.

The title I actually wanted to use for this episode is this: God is Faithful to Judge (And that means we have work to do).  If God is faithful in all of his promises, then, yes, He is faithful to bless us (which we love!), but that means He also must be faithful to judge us (which we don't love so much).  But there are different types of judgement and just what exactly is my role--the Christ-follower's role--in judging others?  Oh, I think we have work to do, and it's not in the judgement business.   Thanks for listening today!  Make sure to connect with me over on social media--I love to hear from you guys! We've made it to our final episode of our study of Ruth.  Welcome to chapter 4!  It's always fascinating to be able to look back at a finished story and see God's hand at work, and what we see in Ruth 4 is that Boaz, a true man of God, knew that God had a plan.  And he trusted in that plan.  But that doesn't mean he didn't go about handling the business of becoming Ruth's husband without a little shrewdness of his own.  Let's take a look at the final chapter of the great love story of Boaz and Ruth!

Welcome back to week 3 of our study of Ruth!  There are so many take-aways in this one!  Many read this chapter and see scandalous behavior, but let's take a look at it through the lens of 1100ish BC Israelite customs.  In Ruth 3, we see real relationship growth between Boaz and Ruth.  She trusts him, and he values her, and I love that we're watching how they come to be.  But I also love getting an inside look into the depth of love between Naomi and Ruth.  Naomi not only helps Ruth get the man, but she also helps comfort her while they have to wait on the "problem" of this story to be resolved.  All the while, Ruth and Boaz both continue to demonstrate just how important it is to be a person of great character.     Article mentioned:  Wives, Submit (Yes, Really!) Divorce can be such a taboo topic amongst Christians, but the fact remains that many of us go through it.  I've decided to make myself vulnerable and share my own personal story of divorce, including the hurts that came from the church, and what I've learned since then that has helped me see that I'm still a daughter of the King.

Isn't it funny how different people deal with change?  The Hebrew Christians in the book of Hebrews weren't so different from us today:  they struggled with change.  The writer of Hebrews gives them example after example of Old Testament Scripture that pointed to this NEW Covenant, and how much better it would be, but yet they're still tempted to stick with what is familiar because it is comfortable.  Listen in as the writer explains to them that Jesus provides us a better covenant with better promises.

The book of Hebrews may have been written for the Hebrew Christians, but it still rings true for us today.  Hebrews 7 addresses some intellectual concerns the Hebrew Christians were struggling with, like how can this Jesus guy be our high priest when He isn't even from the right tribe?!  The writer uses an old teaching strategy to help them understand--he connects what they're struggling to understand about Jesus with what they do understand about someone they already know, a king and priest named Melchizedek.  This chapter also brings back into focus a common theme throughout the New Testament:  It doesn't matter what you give, as long as it comes from the heart.  It's a heart issue.
