It felt fitting that our final episode of Season 2—during which we celebrated so many of the vintage romances that blooded us—would be with someone we could fully geek out with! We are thrilled to have Steve Ammidown, romance nerd and archivist at the Browne Popular Culture Library at Bowling Green State University, with us today to talk about Vivian Stephens and early category romances. To prepare, all three of us read some of the earliest American category romances, and wow were they a ride! We’re talking women who work, marriage in romance, older heroines, the impact of Vietnam on 1980s romances, and more. Strap in!We’re on hiatus for the next three weeks, but you’ll hear some great alternative content on Wednesdays — including crossover episodes and interviews we’ve done in other places. Thank you, as always, for listening — we hope you’re having a great (and safe!) summer. While we’re apart, if you are up for leaving a rating or review for the podcast on your podcasting app, we would be very grateful!Oh, and did you know Sarah has a new book out? Daring & the Duke is officially here! Get it at Amazon, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Books-a-Million or from your local indie, or order it signed from the wonderful independent bookstore, Savoy Bookshop in RI, where she is through the end of July!Show NotesWelcome Steve Ammidown, the Manuscripts & Outreach Archivist at the Browne Popular Culture Library at the Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.Vivian Stephens was one of the original founders of RWA and one of the most important editors in romance. At the Browne Pop Culture library, there is a special Vivian Stephens collection. Vivian was instrumental in bringing category romance to America and created the Candlelight Ecstacy Romance line, which put sex on page in a new way. She also created the Harlequin American line.Vivian recruited a series of authors who changed the face of romance: Jayne Castle/Jayne Ann Krenz, Sandra Brown, and later Beverly Jenkins. Here is an early interview with Vivian about her work and the world of romance. At the last RITAs ceremony--in the future, it will be the Vivians!-- there was a great video of romance firsts. You should watch it.Dangerous Men and Adventurous Women was a 90s era collection of romance essays by romance writers to combat a lot of not great academic research on romance. The late 70s and early 80s were a tumultuous time in American history: the return of Vietnam soldiers, a finacial crisis, and a huge divorce boom. The mall bookstores, B. Dalton and Waldenbooks, were alive and well in the 80s. The buyers at these bookstores, including Sue Grimshaw, were powerful gatekeepers who had a great amount of power over the romance genre.Kathryn Falk and Romantic Times and Flavia Kngightsbridge was a famous RT columnist, and at RT conventions there was something called the Mr. Romance Competition, and everyone who has ever seen it is like...whoa.Marisa de Zavala, whose real name is Celina Mullan, also wrote as Ana Lisa de Leon and Rachel Scott. See more about Marisa on this great thread about her from Alexis Daria!Entwined Destinies was one of the first category romances with Black characters by a Black author, Elsie Washington writing as Rosalind Welles. Although it's very difficult to find a copy of Entwined Destinies, but BGSU has a great photograph of Vivian and Elsie together.0 LIKES

The aggressive, angular, stainless steel wedge on wheels looks like something out of a science fiction movie. To say it’s polarizing is an understatement. People love, hate it, are scared by it, excited by it, some think it’s one of the worst automobiles ever designed, and others look at it and see the future. One thing is for certain. Tesla, known in many circles for design innovation, has not disappointed in pushing the envelope when it comes to design norms. One-Off, Limited Edition, "Here for a limited time only!" If you follow design, you've likely been seeing these phrases a lot lately. There is a premium placed on design that is "of the moment" and then it's gone. This so-called "short run trend" is sticking around more than the designs that comprise it — what is the consequence of that? Without "design movements" that cross years, disciplines, even generations, embedding deeply in society and culture, what is left? Where do we go from here?

This episode is also available on YouTube. Our special guest today is Adam Avin, the founder of Wuf Shanti[1], a company that promotes health, wellness, and happiness in children, and encourages peace and positivity. Wuf Shanti was created by a kid for other kids, and started when Adam was younger, with his illustrations, voice and his dream to make a difference in the world. He shares his character, Wuf Shanti, with children across the planet, in the hopes of guiding them down a path of peace and positivity with his programs. His Wuf Shanti videos are in hospitals around the globe, helping children smile while they heal from their cancer treatments and in 25,000 schools across the country. I first met Adam this past Spring when he was hosting the Mindful Kids Peace Summit[2] (a five-day summit that I was a part of) that brought awareness to the need for immediate change in our schools today. It was incredible for me to see his knowledge and enthusiasm for social emotional learning (he understands the competencies just as well as the experts he interviewed) and his experience with mindfulness and meditation as he interviewed over 70 experts!Welcome Adam! It’s wonderful to speak with you. Q1: For those who have not yet seen your TEDTALK[3] where you explain this in detail, can you give us some background on your company, what exactly Wuf Shanti does, and the reason why did you started this company? Q2: I mentioned in the intro that you were a host of the Mindful Kids Peace Summit this year and interviewed over 70 experts. I know to do this well, you need to research your expert in order to ask questions and be able to speak on the topic you are asking them about.  What did you learn from interviewing these experts, and hosting this summit?Q3: Watching your interview with the teacher from Marjorie Stoneman Douglas HS (Chelsea Briggs) was a part of the summit that I will never forget, since one of the main reasons I got involved with this work back in the late 90s was because of the Columbine tragedy (April 20, 1999). This is going back before you were born, I was working with a group of 12 teens who created a pin to honor the 13 lives lost in that tragedy. I kept the pin to remind me of why I am doing this work, and last year, I had the chance to meet Darryl Scott the father of Rachel Scott, the first teen shot that day, and he took a pin to remind him of the ripple effect that his daughter has had on the world. The Parkland shooting (not far from where you live) was 17 lives lost, the worst school shooting since Sandy Hook (20 children and 6 adults).  How did speaking with the students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman High School in Parkland impact you and your work?ADAM: Mentioned that this event inspired him to work harder because the statistics[4] show the need is imminent for change. We agree as the research shows that “80% of children who struggle with mental health issues receive no treatment.”[5] Q4: We saw “student voice” emerge after the Parkland shooting and it remains a concept, I know schools are placing a focus on. How has Wuf Shanti helped you to bring “student voice” to the forefront? What do your friends think about your work? Have you helped any of your friends with success or coping strategies?Q5: On a lighter note, it was fun for me to watch your promoting the summit, especially when Maroon 5 noticed you on social media. How do you think bringing in a celebrity helped to spread the word and your goals for the summit?Q6: What’s your vision for Wuf Shanti? Where would you like to see your programs go?ADAM: His vision is to have mental health programs in all schools K-12 for students and educators. Educators need stress reduction techniques as well.[6] Q7: What final advice do you have for anyone listening to bring for mindfulness into their daily lives? (the tips you gave at the end of your TED TALK were perfect). Thank you for your time Adam. We think you are wise beyond your years and doing incredible work to make an impact spreading social and emotional learning and mindfulness around the country and world. For a 14-year-old, you’ve accomplished more than many adults. I hope you are proud of your hard work and know that you will keep going to do some incredible things. RESOURCES:https://wufshanti.com/resources/ https://wufshanti.com/resources/mindful-kids-peace-summit/https://wufshanti.com/sflpbs-wuf-shanti-schedule-2017-2018/https://wufshanti.com/resources/kids-association-mindfulness-education/https://wufshanti.com/giving-back/https://wufshanti.com/research/Stay Tuned for the second release of the Mindful Kids Peace Summit coming Sept. 23, 2019.https://wufshanti.com/resources/mindful-kids-peace-summit/RESOURCES:[1] www.wufshanti.com[2] https://www.mindfulkidspeacesummit.com[3] “Mindfulness in Education to Lower Stress and Violence” by Adam Avin, TEDxYouth@KC June 10, 2019. https://www.tedxkc.org/adam-avin-kcyouth/[4] Suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 15-24 (Center for Disease Control) cdc.org[5] Dr. Daniel Amen (Thrive by 25 Online Course) https://www.brainmdhealth.com/brain-thrive[6] “Teacher Stress and Health” by Greenberg MT, Brown JL, and Abenavoli RM  (September 2016) https://www.rwjf.org/en/library/research/2016/07/teacher-stress-and-health.html

076: Designing A Yoga Teacher Training with Rachel Scott   Think back to your first 200-hour yoga teacher training. What was it like? Did it fit your learning style? What do you wish was included? If you've given these questions some thought perhaps designing and teaching yoga teacher training is a path for you.   Shannon came across Rachel Scott in a serendipitous-like fashion. Rachel had shared photos on the Pixabay (a free image-sharing site), and Shannon used one for her online 5-Day Content Creation Challenge. Noticing that Rachel was a yoga teacher, Shannon clicked on the link to Rachel's site. Discovering that Rachel did consultation work with yoga teachers interested in designing their own YTT, (a topic Shannon wanted to cover on the show), Shannon took the opportunity to invite Rachel on the podcast as a guest.   Rachel is an educational designer and teacher whose mission is to support yoga teachers and studios to create their own excellently crafted and delivered teacher trainings. She has worked in education for nearly twenty years and led the Teachers College at one of Canada's largest yoga studios for more than seven. The author of two yoga books, she hosts an award-winning blog and has contributed to several publications. Rachel has a BA from Columbia University, Masters of Science in Instructional Design and Learning Technology. She describes herself as “part nerd, part creative artist”, believing in elevating strengths, laughing out loud, and taking a few deep breaths.   With warmth and wisdom, Shannon and Rachel discuss the pros and cons of designing a yoga teacher course, how to determine if this path is right for you, teaching and planning strategies and much more.   As always, please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below. What would you like to see included in a yoga teacher training? Have you given thought to teaching one? 11:30 How Rachel become interested in helping yoga teachers create their own yoga YTT and her process of becoming a consultant   17:45 Rachel's perspective on creating online yoga content with good intentions (versus income-focused)   19:05 Rachel's approach to guiding teachers through designing a YTT   22:00 How do yoga teachers know if they're ready to create a yoga teacher training, the qualities of a good teacher and defining where strengths and interest lies   26:00 How to test the waters to help you decide if you would like to teach a YTT and considering training for becoming a good teacher   28:05 “One of the reasons to teach is to learn” -don't feel pressured to go into teaching “knowing all”   30:00 Helping students learn versus telling students what you know and Rachel's first time leading a YTT and learning the significance of this “creating an environment where people can make mistakes” a practice and actively learning instead of students sitting and listening   33:10 Is there a downside of designing a YTT and pitfalls to avoid   36:35 Considerations to help you determine what to charge for your YTT   41:20 How much content can students manage to process in a day and strategies that can help   44:40 Rachel's thoughts on improving YTTs she has attended- finding a way to give feedback to students, some form of accountability, clarity in what students will learn from a course   49:10 The services Rachel provides and how to work with her   53:15 Shannon's wrap up and final thoughts on offering yoga teacher trainings Links   Contact Rachel for a free 15-minute consultation call:   Rachel's email: info@rachelyoga.com   Rachel's Website: Rachel Yoga   Rachel on Facebook   Rachel on Instagram   The Connected Teacher Facebook Group   Follow The Connected Teacher on YouTube   Book a Consultation Call with Shannon   The Connected Yoga Teacher 5-Day Content Creation Challenge   Relevant TCYT Episodes:   052: Create Your Online Course with Janelle Allen   061: Too Many Yoga Teachers with Kimma Stark Gratitude to our Sponsor Schedulicity

I wish I could tell the whole wide world about this one because so many people struggle to find a good yoga teacher training.  It's not something that you'd want to roll the dice on either, seeing as how each training is thousands of dollars.  Rachel's advice is worth its weight in gold!  So if you know somebody who would benefit from this info, keep the good vibes going and SHARE THIS EPISODE! Many thanks to you for joining me.  Now, plug in those headphones and listen away! Episode 7: Fred Lynch of Rachel's Challenge My guest today is Fred Lynch, San Diego director of Rachel’s Challenge, an organization founded by the parents of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine school shooting. The organization visits hundreds of schools each year to drive its mission of, “Making schools safer, more connected places where bullying and violence are replaced with kindness and respect; and where learning and teaching are awakened to their fullest.” With so much current attention on school safety, I wanted to get a sense of what programs like Rachel’s Challenge do to shift the culture of schools. We cover a lot of ground here, and I love talking with Fred. Among other things, he talks about the work of developing kindness and compassion as skills to be practiced and honed, and about giving students ownership to determine how to establish cultures of kindness at their schools. We also talked about identifying students of influence, and how those aren't always the poster child, straight A students, but those across social groups that influence their peers. That’s a big part of getting buy-in by entire schools. We also address those who may feel that programs like Rachel’s Challenge are too touchy-feely and can't possible make schools safer. Spoiler alert: they do. Enjoy, and my all means check out Fred and Rachel's Challenge. Here are some links: Rachel's Challenge WebsiteRachel's Challenge San Diego Instagram

Our Subject for today’s podcast falls on the heels of the latest school shooting. In Wylie ISD, we have a standard that every student have at least one positive relationship with an adult as a method of engaging kids and deterring acts of violence. Most students who commit these acts are isolated individuals without connection or support. By engaging our kids with kindness, caring and love will give them the hope and happiness necessary to thrive in a positive way. In Wylie, we actually measure student/teacher relationships 3 times per year to identify and help those who feel isolated. Our focus today is to learn about the value of caring, kindness and engagement and reflect on one parent’s experience of losing a child to an incident like what happened in Florida. Darrell Scott, parent of Rachel Scott and is the founder of Rachel’s Challenge. Rachel was a victim of the Columbine School Shooting in 1999. In Rachel’s diary, she wrote "I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go." Darrell’s life has been dedicated to Rachel’s Challenge to bring kindness and caring to the world in a chain reaction that has touched over 5,000,000 lives. Episode guests: Darrell Scott, father of Rachel Scott, founder of Rachel's Challenge Mike Williams, principal of Wylie East High School Virdie Montgomery, principal of Wylie High School Barbara Goss, Wylie ISD parent, Board Member Heather Leggett, Wylie ISD parent, Board Member Ian Halperin, Executive Director of Public Relations For the Love & Logic parent resource referrenced by Mr. Scott, please click here: https://www.loveandlogic.com/ For the 180 Connections resource referrenced by Mr. Scott, please click here: https://goo.gl/mTxvk6 Information and advice contained in this podcast should not be used in any legal capacity whatsoever, including but not limited to defining, interpreting or establishing policies or procedures of a school or the district. Rachel Scott of Better Than Blended works with couples who are blending families together after divorce, death, and adoption. Rachel knows from experience (from growing up in a blended family and being a parent of one) that it takes a lot of intention and humility to go from brokenness to unity. It's easy to feel rejected by step-kids, but as she learned to focus on the kids' needs instead of what her role as step-mom "should" be, she found that trust began to develop. She has seen laughter in her new family and they take regular family days to continue to invest in relationships. She encourages families in the process of blending to pursue authenticity, keep their marriage the priority, and remember that these challenges are temporary. Rachel's answers to the fun questions: • What are you loving right now? Getting to do the everyday things with the kids (and without exhaustion) because she gets to work from home • What’s your favorite food/meal/snack? Sweet potato pie • What are you doing to take care of yourself? Reading. Specifically, The Magnolia Story and Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus • What are you doing to be brave? My personal healing journey began when I decided to stop sharing my life with pain. And now I help people with chronic pain and restricted mobility reclaim their bodies and love their lives. When you suffer from constant pain in your neck, hips, shoulders or other joints, you just feel stuck, knowing that you’ve tried so many things but only had temporary results. Over time, you get so used to the pain that it starts to feel like part of who you are. For many years, this was my reality. I suffered from daily headaches and chronic pain in my neck and back. I saw many doctors and specialists who couldn’t offer me answers, or relief other than pain medication. It wasn’t until I saw a skilled massage therapist that I stopped sharing my life with pain. I’m a licensed massage practitioner and holistic bodyworker. I help people with chronic pain and limited mobility break the pain cycle and reclaim their bodies. Over the years I’ve met a lot of massage practitioners who treat relaxation massage and clinical treatment massage as two completely different things. So if you ask for treatment work, you get one type of service, and if you ask for relaxation, you get another type of service. But the treatment massage is overly focused and painful so it doesn’t provide lasting improvement. Then the relaxation massage feels nice but it doesn’t address functional goals or lead to any notable changes. It’s frustrating to see this, because after practicing for more than ten years, I know from experience that the most healing approach to bodywork is a holistic one. To really help people we have to combine clinical techniquewith therapies that induce deep relaxation. Without a thorough understanding of how your body works, therapists can’t apply their techniques in a way that helps you gently ease into a more comfortable state of being.  It’s essential to work with someone who understands this and has experience helping people succeed in fully recovering from pain and injury. Think about everything you’ve already tried to alleviate the pain. And what you wish you could be doing right now if you didn’t have to carry the burden of pain every day. What if I told you that you that you don’t have to live this way? It is possible to feel better right now - without drugs, painful therapies or expensive medical intervention. I collaborate with our region's top doctors to help people with complex pain issues. I also mentor other massage practitioners to become more effective healers. My holistic approach to sensory healing blends hydrotherapy and essential oils with neuromuscular therapy and myofascial release, complemented by visualization, breathwork and self-care strategies. As a result my clients feel nurtured, informed and deeply relaxed, while simultaneously receiving detailed and effective therapy.    Jeremy Baker is the founder and editor in chief of BestSeattleDaySpas.com, a top resource and guide on aesthetic and wellness treatments. How do we respond to challenges? How do you respond when you’re faced with a dilemma where you are faced with a difficult decision to make? On the one hand, if you stand for God you will suffer at the hands of those challenging you. On the other hand, if you don’t stand for God, you will avoid the imminent consequences, but have denied the Lord in some way. When Jesus was being tried before his execution on the cross, when challenged, Peter denied him twice (Luke 22:54-62). Yet, he was later forgiven and restored by the Lord (John 21:15-19). Christians often face challenges, whether large or small, with the threat of ostracism on the one hand to death on the other hand (moreso in other countries around the world than here in Ireland). How do we respond? If a Christian, what question do we want to be asked least? What situation do we want avoid most? Are we more afraid of upsetting other people than God? The Lord is with his followers in the middle of their trials In Daniel 3:1-30, Daniel’s three friends face a life-threatening question. But they refuse to compromise on their faith in the Lord God, even when threatened with death. In the end, God eventually saves them from death, and they are strengthened in their faith, to God’s glory. Yet, even during the trial that they endured, the Lord was present with them in a very real way. And when they came through it, they were not injured from their experience at all. Yet, are we prepared for the ultimate sacrifice? But not everyone can come through it the same way. Sometimes the Lord doesn’t rescue us, and we have to face suffering or even death. Are we prepared to stand for the Lord even when we know it means facing death? Here is an (edited) extract from an account of the death of Rachel Scott, who died because she refused to deny Jesus. Rachel Scott, one of the martyrs killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, would be 31 today, if she were alive. Though Rachel’s life was tragically cut short at the age of 17, her story continues to inspire people today, more than a decade after her death. Rachel’s faith in Christ was no secret to her peers in Littleton, Colorado, which made her a target that fateful day when Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold opened fire at their high school. Rachel was asked by the gunmen if she believed in Christ, and when she answered in the affirmative, she was shot. She was the first person shot that day, including 12 students, one teacher (and the two gunmen later on committed suicide). Minutes later, they returned to her, as she was lying on the ground wounded, asking her a second time if she still believed. On answering yes again, she was shot in the head. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Rachel’s journey was the premonition she had a year before she was killed. On May 2, 1998, she wrote in her journal: “This will be my last year, Lord. I have gotten what I can. Thank you.” She knew that her faith could cost her. Shortly after her conversion, it began costing her friends that no longer wanted to associate with her. Rachel took it hard, as any teenage girl would, but she didn’t reconsider her commitment to Jesus. “I am not going to apologize for speaking the Name of Jesus,” she wrote in a letter to her friend one year to the day before her death. “I am not going to justify my faith to them, and I am not going to hide the light that God has put into me. If I have to sacrifice everything…I will.” Rachels’ funeral, which was broadcast on CNN, reportedly was the most widely watched programme in CNN’s history [funeral in television history]. The funeral consisted of, among other things, testimonies from her friends concerning her strong commitment to Christ. In her death, Rachel was able to spread the gospel via CNN, to people who may have otherwise gone unreached. Pastor Bruce Porter spoke at Rachel’s funeral, addressing the young people in the crowd: “Rachel carried a torch, the torch of truth, the torch of compassion, the torch of love, the torch of the good news of Jesus Christ, her Savior and Lord, whom she was not ashamed of even in her hour of death. I want to lay a challenge before each and every one of you young people here today. The torch has fallen from Rachel’s hand. Who will pick it up again? Who will pick up the torch again.” When we are faced with difficult choices like this, it helps if we are already prepared in our minds beforehand as to how we will respond. If we suffer, the Lord is with us in the midst of our trials. If we are faithful to him and are spared, our faith is strengthened. If as believers we suffer the ultimate sacrifice, death, we go to be with the Lord which is far better (Phil 1:21-23). Edit: There is another girl, Cassie Bernall, who was also killed at Columbine as well as Rachel. she was reported to have said something similar to Rachel before being shot. However, since posting this, I have learned of the conflicting accounts of what is believed to have been said, or not said. It appears that neither may have actually been questioned about their faith. However, as another post similarly concludes; “Rachel’s parents maintain their daughter was targeted because she was a Christian and that videos which were part of the investigation prove that she was harassed by the gunmen for her faith.” Regardless of what was said or not, Rachel’s diary shows that she was prepared to give up her life for her Lord and Saviour. She is with him now.
