Our study into the Parables of Jesus continues as this week Pastor Rob Curington examines the Parable of the Shrewd Manager to discover how Jesus encourages the disciples to be wise in using their finances.
What if the real problem isn't just cynicism… but the way we think there are only two options? In Part 2 of this series, Pastor Tom explores the tension between being naive and becoming cynical—and how Jesus offers a completely different way. Drawing from Matthew 10, we're invited to live with eyes wide open while refusing to let our hearts become hardened. This message challenges us to examine where cynicism has taken root in our lives and offers a practical path forward: name it, trace it, and pray it.Rather than settling for a life that is guarded and closed off, Jesus calls us back to something deeper—a posture that is both wise and pure, grounded and open, honest yet hopeful. If you've ever found yourself becoming more critical, more guarded, or more tired of disappointment, this message is for you

Send a textVery seldom do we introduce a topic and chew on it for the entirety of our podcast. But today's conversation seemed to grow two new legs every time we gnawed and digested one. Tucked around the mysterious attraction church gossipers know all too well, we described an incident where David remembered all the details (including the name of the person who smugly scolded us) and Dr Dave agonized over whether his reaction was pleasing to Jesus or not. And now, with this recording, we may have entered a similar question of faithfulness into our moral ledger.

Today on the Daily Nugget, Mike reflects on Matthew 10:16 and Jesus' call to be “wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” We live aware that we have a real enemy who schemes against us, so wisdom and discernment matter. But we also walk in humility, keeping our eyes fixed on the Lord and our lives aimed at His glory. Be engaged in the fight—but don't let the fight become your focus.

Jesus tells a story about a dishonest manager that makes many of us uncomfortable. Why would Jesus end a story by praising someone who acted dishonestly? In this message, we dig into Luke 16:1–9 and discover that Jesus isn't endorsing dishonesty, but pointing to something deeper: urgency, clarity about the future, and how we use what's been entrusted to us right now. This parable confronts our tendency to coast, assume tomorrow will look like today, and delay living fully for God's kingdom. Instead, Jesus invites us to live with intentionality and to use our resources, relationships, and influence in light of eternity. As litigation against the Epstein estate advanced, the estate pursued a strategy that appeared designed to pressure Ghislaine Maxwell into bearing disproportionate legal and financial responsibility for Epstein's crimes. By aggressively asserting indemnification claims and cross-claims against Maxwell, the estate sought to position her not merely as a co-defendant but as a financial backstop for liability tied to Epstein's abuse. This maneuver effectively attempted to shift exposure away from the estate's assets by framing Maxwell as contractually obligated to cover losses, even as she faced parallel criminal prosecution. The timing and posture of these claims suggested a calculated effort to box Maxwell in legally, narrowing her options while leveraging the imbalance between the estate's resources and her increasingly precarious position. In practice, the estate's tactics functioned as a pressure campaign, forcing Maxwell to defend herself on multiple fronts while signaling that cooperation or acquiescence might limit her financial ruin. Rather than facilitating a clear path to survivor compensation or transparency, the estate used Maxwell as a legal shield, attempting to absorb accountability without absorbing full consequence. This approach echoed a broader pattern in the Epstein aftermath: isolate expendable actors, contain liability, and preserve silence around the wider network that enabled Epstein for decades. By trying to force Maxwell's hand through civil litigation, the estate was less interested in justice than in closing ranks, controlling narrative risk, and ensuring that the final chapter of Epstein's enterprise remained as tightly managed as the rest of it had been.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

This Sunday, we'll explore the parable of the shrewd manager. In the parable, a manager uses all the resources available to him before losing his job to secure a comfortable future—employing clever, though questionable, methods along the way. Jesus urges us to be shrewd managers as well, because like the manager in the parable, we all have “mammon”—the resources we depend on apart from God, such as money, work, or status. If we use our mammon only for ourselves, we may gain worldly rewards but miss out on heavenly treasure. Instead, Jesus calls us to use our shrewdness in service to God's kingdom. Then, like the manager, we'll be preparing for our future—but unlike him, the wealth we build will last forever.
Jesus sends believers into a hostile world like sheep among wolves, but He provides a strategy for navigating opposition. Christians must learn to hear God's voice through Scripture, prayer, and godly counsel to understand their divine calling. The key is balancing shrewdness and innocence—being wise and strategic while maintaining purity and integrity. Shrewdness without innocence becomes cunning, while innocence without shrewdness becomes naivety. This balance helps believers identify genuine threats while keeping their hearts pure. The ultimate goal isn't just survival but transformation, as the gospel has power to turn wolves into sheep through faithful Christian witness.

Bruce Wydick is an economist, professor, and author of Shrewd Samaritan: Faith, Economics, and the Road to Loving Our Global Neighbor. As his faith deepened throughout his college career, Bruce developed an unexpected passion for economic development and the role of the Church. The more he researched, the more he realized a great need for Christian NGOs to be able to measure the impact they're having on the people they've been called to help. Bruce helped start the Collaborative for Econometrics and Integrated Development Studies (CEIDS), which has grown into a network of more than 100 development economists, public health experts, and other related fields from all around the world. Together, they work to support the relief and development arms of Christ's global Church by helping Christian NGOs develop tools and built-in programs so that they and their donors can know where, how, and why they're truly being effective. Bruce brings a rare blend of heartfelt, Spirit-led generosity and a data-driven focus on high impact giving to help followers of Jesus love our neighbors with wisdom by investing resources in ways that truly change lives for the Kingdom. Bruce shares stories from his research and his own journey of faith, emphasizing that generosity isn't just about good intentions but about stewarding God's gifts so that they bear lasting fruit. Major Topics Include: Blending faith and economic development The Story of Mayan Partners in Guatemala The biblical picture of human flourishing The challenge of impact measurement for Christian NGOs Making informed, Spirit-led giving decisions Stages of a heart-progression on world problems: The Six i's—ignorance, indifference, idealism, investigation, introspection, impact Developing an identity with those you're called to serve Understanding poverty traps as a giver Measuring impact through randomized control trials and quasi-experimental designs How givers can use AI to research the most impactful interventions Examples of the most effective and ineffective interventions QUOTES TO REMEMBER “The Kingdom works the opposite of the way that economics says the world should work.” “We should not only be good Samaritans, but shrewd Samaritans, that we actively think about what we do, as well as we pray and feel led by the heart.” “The poor are important enough to Christ that we owe them an informed decision on how we give and not just a feeling-based decision.” “What is the role that God has placed me in?” “It's not about one person saving the world. It's about one person listening to God and His calling on our lives to serve where He wants us to serve.” “If we understand where there's a need and then see where our gifting lines up with that need, God will bring about His biblically-based human flourishing in that intersection.” “Providing cash is almost always better than providing stuff.” “The earlier you intervene in a child's life, the more impactful it is.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW Shrewd Samaritan by Bruce Wydick Collaborative for Econometrics and Integrated Development Studies (CEIDS) Social Impact Analytics Course at University of San Francisco Compassion International Children of the Nations International Care Ministries Mayan Partners Hope Walks The Finish Line Community Facebook Group The Finish Line Community LinkedIn Group WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! We've said that Jesus designed his parables to tease us into active thought. That often means looking for the surprise in the story. This week it is right on the surface. Jesus gives the example of a dishonest manager who is wasting his owner's possessions, but the owner finds out. And once the manager realizes he is about to be fired, he uses the remaining time to cut deals with clients. It's the sort of thing we might label as exploitation or at least deception. It seems very unethical. But here comes the surprise: Jesus uses it as a positive example to challenge his followers. Certainly Jesus is not encouraging dishonesty, so what is he commending? What might it look like for 'sons of light' to be so calculating with God's resources? Let's talk about "The Taming of the Shrewd" Luke 16:1-12

In Fr. Maximo's homily this week, he repeats Jesus' words asking us to have the shrewdness of the children of this world, while at the same time the integrity of the Children of Light. "Be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves," Jesus says in Matthew 10:16. Let's learn how.

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Friday morning, the 15th of August, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go to the Gospel of Luke 16:11-12:”Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? And if you have not been faithful in what is another man's, who will give you what is your own?” Those are strong words spoken by the Master Himself, our Lord Jesus Christ. Because we are Christians, that does not give us an excuse to be second-rate, to be slack, to be lazy, or not to do our best at work.If we are to be ambassadors of Jesus Christ in the workplace, then we need to do it as if we were doing it to God Himself. We need to operate in our God-given gift. I don't know how many young men and women I meet sometimes, ”I just want to serve the Lord.” Well, serve Him in the business field first, before you want to go out and preach to others. Now the Lord Jesus is talking about a man who is shrewd. “Shrewd” means having or showing sharp powers of judgement, being an astute operator or businessman. We need to work hard in the business field, not only for ourselves, but for our fellowman, but mainly for the Lord. Do it well, not for personal gain but as a witness for Jesus. Be the best farmer you can be. Be the best professional sportsman or woman you can be. Be a good teacher, an artist, a doctor, a truck driver as unto the Lord. I read something very encouraging and it goes like this: Individuals who integrate their Christian faith into their business practices and leadership, that's what God is looking for - integrity, honesty, service, impacting communities especially in the workplace, living out their faith in the marketplace.I looked up John D Rockefeller, an American businessman. He was in the oil business. They say that he was the most successful businessman of his era. He reminds me of Joseph. You know that Pharaoh made Joseph his prime minister. He was the second most powerful man on earth. Remember, he was a slave, sold into slavery, he made an impact, he saved a nation.Today, use your God-given gifts for the glory of God and enjoy what you're doing.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day, Goodbye.
