I am so thrilled to introduce you to Kari Kampakis today! Kari is a best selling author and speaker focusing on very practical and godly tips for primarily teens (but other stages as well) and wisdom for parenting through all stages of childhood. I discovered her books about 4 years ago at a time when I was newly parenting teens and felt very lost in how to navigate that season well. A friend gave me Kari's book Love Her Well and it was truly eye opening and life changing for me, especially during that season. Soon after, we added Kari's books to Clover + Bee and had her come in for a special event for moms. Kari's wisdom is truly a gift from the Lord. She has the ability to share it in such a practical, common sense way that is easy to digest and immediately implement. Her tips are so helpful to learn how to love your child well and relate to him or her in whatever season you find yourself in. Kari describes herself as a deep thinker, saying if you met in person, she would want to skip the small talk and dive straight into the coffee talk. That is the treat you are in for today! She has been featured on the Today Show, Focus on the Family, multiple podcasts, Yahoo News and so much more. Kari and I dive into her story for a bit but then really settle into that good coffee talk tackling issues like anxiety, adult friendships, social media, boundaries and more. If you are a parent in any season of life, wondering if you are alone or if you are getting this thing right or how to navigate the stage you are in, grab a pen and paper and pull up a seat - this episode is just for you! As kids grow up and mature - and especially as they go to college - many will decide that kindness is the #1 quality they want in a friend. Once you've been burned by a mean friend, you understand why kindness matters. But in the middle school and sometimes the high school years, some kind girls may get overlooked as they float from group to group but don't have a firm place of belonging. Join Kari and Kim as they discuss this common dynamic and reassure parents who try to teach good character that it's worth it to stay the course. Show Notes:Kari Kampakis is an author, speaker, podcaster, and newspaper columnist from Birmingham, Alabama. She writes for teen girls and moms, and her books include 10 Ultimate Truths Girls Should Know, Liked, Love Her Well, and More than a Mom.Kari offers advice to teens and parents, but more importantly she offers compassion and understanding. Parenting is hard at any stage, even if the struggles from family to family are different. As a mom of four girls, Kari has learned that parenting moves from a place of control to a place of influence. That transition can be hard without faith and without a strong support system. We live in a culture of child-centered parenting, which is why it's important for parents and children that parents have a healthy adult life--passions, interests, and friends. For Kari and her husband, finding an identity in Christ and having hobbies and interests outside of parenting are vital to the overall health of their family.Resources:WebsiteInstagramFacebookGirl Mom PodcastKari's Books:10 Ultimate Truths Girls Should Know Liked: Whose Approval Are You Living ForLove Her Well More Than a Mom

I grew up with two sisters so coming from an all-girl family, I was completely unprepared to have two sons. But as soon as I felt adjusted to life as a boy mom, I had a daughter! Raising a daughter is everything I always dreamed it would be, and also as challenging as I imagined it would be. Which is why I am so grateful for wise experts like today's guest, Kari Kampakis. Kari is a mom of four girls, the host of the Girl Mom podcast, and author of several books including, More Than a Mom and Love Her Well. While being a girl is so different today than it was when we were growing up, some things remain relatively the same and one of those things is the challenge of learning to navigate friendships. Today Kari and I cover some of the messaging that girls receive about themselves and how we can reframe those messages, how to raise kind daughters, the importance of speaking truth over our girls, how to navigate friendships, and Kari reminds us that it all goes back to Jesus. One big source of conflict in marriage is financial stress. Even 2 people raised in the same socioeconomic class can have drastically different ideas about money - and how to spend it. They have unrealistic expectations that lead to arguments, disillusionment, and debt. Join Kari and Kim Anderson as they discuss ways to help your daughter build healthy ideas about money and learn the value of a dollar. As humans, we long to believe we are good. And for teens especially, it's tempting to gauge yourself against peers and think you're doing well when your choices aren't as bad as their choices. You're considered a "good girl" or "good guy," but what you really are is a good girl/guy in comparison. God calls us to a higher standard. He wants us to look at Jesus, not people, when seeing where we have room to improve. Join Kari and Mary Lauren as they talk about virtue and not settling for a life of spiritual mediocrity. Kari Kampakis is an author, speaker, podcaster, and newspaper columnist from Birmingham, Alabama.
Today's culture tells boys that being "the man" is all about dominance, conquests, and becoming the loudest person in the room. For parents trying to raise godly sons...and boys who care about their faith...fighting that tension between what gets celebrated by society and what God desires can be a real struggle. Join Kari as she talks to recent Samford graduate Will Hudson about the real-life challenges facing boys today and 5 action steps they can take to deepen their faith. “As parents our job is to be kinder and stronger, and wiser.” Those words are simple and sensible, but that directive can be deceptively hard. How do we mother - how do we live even - as our roles change hourly, monthly, yearly? In this second part of our conversation with Kari Kampakis she encourages us that if we are finding our identity in Christ and our joy in Him we can more easily navigate our ever-shifting roles as women. We can be free to teach and guide our children through life and ultimately let go of the reins when the time is right. “I'm not a regular mom, I'm a cool mom” are the words of Mean Girl Regina George's mom. We know she's not a great example of a mom, but it can be difficult to sort out which moments are for connecting and which are for correcting. You want to be a valid voice in your daughter's life as she enters their teen years and not just maintain, but grow your connection with her. It is possible to break from what society says and enjoy the teenage years. Mom of four girls and author, Kari Kampakis, talks with us this week about how humility and compassion can help us navigate our relationships with our tweens and teens. (Bonus - when they see us live this way, it will help them learn to navigate relationships too!)
