This week we'll study Luke 9:21-27 under the theme “Take Up Your Cross.” Jesus' call to discipleship is startlingly clear: following Him requires daily self-denial and cross-bearing. We'll explore what this means (and doesn't mean), why the cost of refusing Him is far greater than the cost of obedience, and how this difficult path paradoxically leads to true freedom and joy.SERIES SUMMARY: This series is based on the best-selling Christian book, Practicing the Way, by John Mark Comer. This work guides Christians toward spiritual formation by following the lifestyle of Jesus — through intentional practices like silence, sabbath, simplicity, and community. This week, we will be studying Romans 12:1-5, where the Apostle Paul urges believers to offer themselves to God, to be transformed by the renewing of their minds, and to live humbly as interdependent members of Christ's Body. John Mark Comer's Practicing the Way, in the chapter titled “How? A Rule of Life,” builds on this vision by offering a practical framework. This “Rule of Life” is not rigid legalism, but intentional patterns and everyday rhythms that foster freedom in the believer's life. Just as the body thrives when every part fulfills its purpose, so too does the soul flourish when ordered around abiding, becoming, and doing like Jesus.SERIES SUMMARY: This series is based on the best-selling Christian book, Practicing the Way, by John Mark Comer. What is the Christian life really about? And what is the church meant to be? These foundational questions often reveal how deeply our assumptions have been shaped by culture more than by Christ. In this episode of the Unhurried Living Podcast, Alan Fadling shares a rich conversation with John Mark Comer, originally aired when his book Practicing the Way was newly released. John Mark is a teacher, writer, and founder of Practicing the Way and has spent years exploring what it means to be an apprentice of Jesus in the post-Christian West. Formerly the founding pastor of Bridgetown Church in Portland, OR, John Mark now develops spiritual formation resources for churches worldwide. Together, we explore how spiritual disciplines form us not just for today, but for eternal living—and how church communities can reclaim the Way of Jesus in a distracted, fast-paced world. We heard Jesus and Paul rightly tell us the problem with legalistic prescriptions that made Sabbath day anything but honoring to God. But we failed to see the assumption lying behind Jesus (Matt 11:28-30), Paul (Acts 13, 17, 18), and Hebrews (4:9-11), that God-honoring people would value resting from work, to remember and honor God as the sole creator and sustainer of our lives. The sermon today is titled "The Habit of Sabbath." We feel the need to be behind the wheel. To choose our future. To control our lives. But very little turns out the way we designed. Listen along as we continue our journey through Acts. Notes//Quotes: Acts 5:17-42  Proverbs 14:30 “Envy is one of the most miserable vices. Most other vices tend to produce some kind of pleasure, however momentary. But envy is nothing but unpleasant, through and through. It is the constant thief of joy. - Gavin Ortlund We can glimpse it in the book of Acts: the method of the kingdom will match the message of the kingdom. The kingdom…goes out into the world vulnerable, suffering, praising, praying, misunderstood, misjudged, vindicated, celebrating: always – as Paul puts it in one of his letters – bearing in the body the dying of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be displayed. - NT Wright Ex 34:4-7 “When God describes himself, He doesn't start with how powerful He is or how He knows everything there is to know or how He's been around since before time and space and there's no one else like Him in the universe. That's all true, but apparently, to God, it's not the most important thing. When God describes himself, He starts with His name. Then He talks about what we call character. He's compassionate and gracious; he's slow to anger; he's abounding in love and faithfulness” - John Mark Comer

I'm trying to encourage you to step your game up.  For if you do, your heart will overflow.  Not my design.  Your creator's.If you haven't yet, check out John Mark Comer's book, Practicing the Way.  If you are in a small group, excellent, hold each other lovingly accountable.  Oh bonus, you can find our Small Group Best Practice Guide on our latest post at FriDudes.com, here's the link...https://www.fridudes.com/post/dudes-guide-for-small-group-engagement-and-growthNow go, love God, love others, take at least one step forward each day on being more Christ-like.

In this introspective episode, Jackie invites listeners to explore a foundational question: What is your native way of being in the world? Rather than diving straight into behavior or belief, she challenges us to uncover our truest self—our Imago Dei—before the world told us who we should be.She introduces the concept of a rule of life, not as a rigid list of dos and don'ts, but as a gentle structure or trellis that supports spiritual growth rooted in who we truly are. Drawing from ancient Christian practices, the Desert Mothers and Fathers, the Rule of St. Benedict, and modern voices like John Mark Comer and Parker Palmer, Jackie suggests that a life of flourishing begins with reclaiming our birthright self.Jackie shares her own journey, reflecting that her native way of being is captured in the word WITH—a value that has shown up across her life in relationships, presence, and ministry. She encourages listeners to consider what has always been true about themselves, especially before the pressures of performance, ego, or cultural roles set in.This episode blends spiritual reflection with practical tools, offering questions for personal discovery and inviting listeners to create a rule of life rooted in their truest identity, not their striving. It's an empowering reminder that we aren't here to manufacture a holy life but to live from the goodness already woven into us.Links for the episodeJohn Mark Comer, https://www.practicingtheway.org/Parker Palmer, Let Your Life Speak https://www.amazon.com/Let-Your-Life-Speak-Listening/dp/0787947350Three Questions: Take a moment to think about who you were before the world told you who you should be. What do you think is your native way of being—who you've always been at your core? If you were exactly the same person you were at age 7—but grown—what would still be true about you? What's stayed unchanged about how you move through the world? Take a breath and think of a moment when you felt most yourself. Not performing. Not proving. Just present. What did that version of you feel like?

Segment 2 • Too many pulpits aim for precision but miss power—biblical preaching should pierce the heart. • Reformers preached experientially, not mechanically—90% application, 10% exegesis. • Every sermon must ask: “Does this help me love Christ more?” Segment 3 • In 1805, missionaries signed the Serampore Agreement—still reshaping missions today. • Carey called us to treasure lost souls and learn their world to reach their hearts. • If we don't understand Gen Z's language and idols, we'll fail to evangelize them. In this episode, I share my honest thoughts on the rise of online Christian voices, the risks of platforming spiritual newbies, and why discernment is so critical for believers—especially those still learning biblical truth. I'm not here to cancel anyone, but I am here to help you think critically about who you're letting disciple you. I bring on my friend, Vanessa Hunt, to discuss the problems with John Mark Comer. We unpack the red flags in his theology and sources, and explore why his books have become the top picks for Christian discipleship. This episode runs longer than usual—but it's a must-listen. When I read John Mark Comer's "The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry," I was excited to see how his approach to clothing aligns with my philosophy. Wardrobe simplicity eliminates hurry and restores peace by removing unnecessary decisions from your day, allowing you to focus on what truly matters. In this episode, I share four essential questions to ask before any purchase and I explain why having fewer, better garments creates space for what truly matters. The American expectation that women should rarely repeat outfits doesn't just clutter our closets—it complicates our mornings and clouds our minds. This week's episode includes a practical challenge: Create your two favorite outfits for the current season and experience the liberation that comes when wardrobe decisions become effortless. What's the fewest number of outfits you could get by with? #SignatureStyleSystems #WardrobeSimplicity #EliminateHurry #IntentionalLiving Let's connect! Are you a DIYer? We've recently talked about the seismic shifts happening in today's culture. That's why this week, we decided to dig up an older episode on this very topic. A few years back, Patrick sat down with John Mark Comer to discuss the state of Christianity in the culture. John Mark, author and pastor, shares his story of how he started following Jesus. Then you'll hear John Mark and Patrick dive right into topics such as the meaning of evangelicalism, especially in current times, and the problem with celebrity culture and Christianity. They also give insights into the cultural shifts challenging faithfulness to Jesus and how we can move forward. Whether you heard it already or not, it's a great listen!
