Over the past half-century, evangelical Christians have rediscovered spiritual formation. Richard Foster, Dallas Willard, John Ortberg, and more recently John Mark Comer have helped re-emphasize spiritual practices and the interior life. But why does so much popular writing and teaching on spiritual formation lean on Catholic sources – mystics and monks and Merton? Is there a distinctly Protestant stream of spiritual formation that we can rediscover? If so, what might it teach us? In this episode, we interact with a new book from Matthew Bingham, A Heart Aflame for God. Bingham asserts that there IS a deep Protestant tradition of spiritual formation, and one of its distinctives is the centrality of Scripture. In this episode, we discuss why we tend to minimize Scripture in spiritual formation, why the Puritans saw Scripture as central to spiritual formation, and how we can practically foreground the Scriptures in our spiritual practices.Chapters:(0:00) Introductions: Have We Lost the Thread on Spiritual Formation?(4:26) The Primacy of the Word of God(13:23) Some Critiques of a Word-Centric Spiritual Formation(20:43) What the Puritans Have to Say(26:22) Let the Word of Christ Dwell in You Richly
Jesus came…preaching (Mark 1:14). Just words? Tell that to creation (Gen 1:3). Just words? Words have conquered kingdoms and forged new worlds. And when it's the word of the cross, the message of God's glorious kingdom, the sword wielded by the Spirit to dispel the darkness and secure the faithful, it's something greater still. Yes, we believe in the foolishness of preaching, for we know what appears so small, weak, and insignificant can rise from obscurity and be used by God to enlighten the nations and save the world. The sermon today is titled "Boldly Preach The Gospel." Jesus loved tables. The Son of Man came to seek and save the lost. And the Son of Man came…eating and drinking. 9-7-2025The speaker introduces an eight-week church-wide study called "Practicing the Way," based on John Mark Comer's teachings, emphasizing the transformative call of Jesus to "Come, follow me." Rooted in historical context, the speaker explains the significance of rabbis in ancient Israel and the rigorous educational journey leading to discipleship, highlighting how Jesus' invitation to fishermen like Peter and Andrew was revolutionary, as it extended to those deemed "not good enough." The call to follow Jesus is presented as an opportunity for personal formation—being with Jesus, becoming like Him, and doing as He did—rather than merely holding Christian beliefs. The speaker challenges listeners to move from identifying as Christians to becoming apprentices of Christ, urging them to carve out time to be with Jesus daily and embrace His call to discipleship for a deeper, transformative faith.
Responding to questions from listeners about the relationship between credobaptists and paedobaptists, what does the Bible say about spanking, and responding to John Mark Comer's definition of the gospel. Visit wwutt.com for all our videos!

Is Penal Substitutionary Atonement biblical? In this video, Christian Barrett responds to John Mark Comer's recent comments about PSA and why this doctrine is essential to the gospel. Many Christians today are confused about atonement theories, but the Bible clearly teaches that Jesus died as our substitute, bearing the penalty for our sins so that we might be reconciled to God. This is the message of salvation, and one worth talking about and defending.
A Critique of Practicing the Way, Part 18 - Spirituality Divorced from Rationality, presented by Bob DeWaay and Barb Gretch. John Mark Comer claims that the most important goal of apprenticeship is being with Jesus - being aware of His presence and hearing His voice. We also refute Comer's claim that we can "live in the moment-by-moment flow of love within the Trinity." (duration 00:24:19) Click here to play
I call it, “Bumper-sticker Theology.” That's my label for the kind of theology that involves no deep, contemplative, pondering or meditation of the weighty issues of faith. But rather it's like a drive-by approach to significant issues where we just wave at them as we go past and summarize our conclusions in pithy phrases that fit well on t-shirts or bumper stickers. We have a plague of bumper-sticker theology in our generation.Daniel Schreiner, “Engaging with ‘Practicing the Way': Nine Thoughts on John Mark Comer's Best Seller,” March 12, 2025.
Today, we dive into the controversy surrounding evangelical pastor John Mark Comer's apparent denial of penal substitutionary atonement, or PSA, sparked by his endorsement of a book rejecting Christ's substitutionary death for our sins. We unpack what PSA means, why it's central to the gospel, and the dangers of dismissing it, with insights from theologians like Alisa Childers and Denny Burke. We're sleepy this episode but we buckle up and continue our journey through the Buddhist Eightfold Path as well as covering the usual vast array of randomness; There's a weird Bloodstock Festival review. We ask if by expecting everything to fulfil your spiritual needs do you just ruin it when it doesn't live up to those standards? Apparently there's a difference between Sigur Ros and Radiohead and rap metal. Maybe we all need to sign up to the same emotional transference in order for anyone to feel any emotion at gigs (please refer to the question about putting too much expectation on things). Heavy metal fans like to have really annoying fun and are maybe a part of a religion. Do we have a thesis statement? What is a thesis statement? Putting effort into being a massive Nazi is the wrong type of effort. Sometimes doing nothing is the right kind of effort. John Mark Comer and the ruthless elimination of hurry. Stop being an individual and be more like Jesus. What have we both tried and failed at giving the right effort to? Single tasking is good and joining long cues is even better... This week we'll study Luke 9:21-27 under the theme “Take Up Your Cross.” Jesus' call to discipleship is startlingly clear: following Him requires daily self-denial and cross-bearing. We'll explore what this means (and doesn't mean), why the cost of refusing Him is far greater than the cost of obedience, and how this difficult path paradoxically leads to true freedom and joy.SERIES SUMMARY: This series is based on the best-selling Christian book, Practicing the Way, by John Mark Comer. This work guides Christians toward spiritual formation by following the lifestyle of Jesus — through intentional practices like silence, sabbath, simplicity, and community. It emphasizes becoming like Jesus by doing what he did, integrating faith into everyday life through rhythm, discipline, and deep apprenticeship. How can we pray for you? tinyurl.com/stmarcusprayersFill out our online connection card: tinyurl.com/stmarcusconnectcardIf you'd like to leave an offering or monetary donation to our ministry please click here: https://tinyurl.com/stmarcusgive

This week, we will be studying Romans 12:1-5, where the Apostle Paul urges believers to offer themselves to God, to be transformed by the renewing of their minds, and to live humbly as interdependent members of Christ's Body. John Mark Comer's Practicing the Way, in the chapter titled “How? A Rule of Life,” builds on this vision by offering a practical framework. This “Rule of Life” is not rigid legalism, but intentional patterns and everyday rhythms that foster freedom in the believer's life. Just as the body thrives when every part fulfills its purpose, so too does the soul flourish when ordered around abiding, becoming, and doing like Jesus.SERIES SUMMARY: This series is based on the best-selling Christian book, Practicing the Way, by John Mark Comer. This week we will be studying Ephesians 4:1-6 under the theme “Do As Jesus Did.” The Apostle Paul calls believers to live a life worthy of the divine calling they've received—a life marked by humility, patience, love, and unity. True spiritual maturity comes not by age but through intentional discipleship, learning to “do as He did” in every area of life.SERIES SUMMARY: This series is based on the best-selling Christian book, Practicing the Way, by John Mark Comer.
What is the Christian life really about? And what is the church meant to be? These foundational questions often reveal how deeply our assumptions have been shaped by culture more than by Christ. In this episode of the Unhurried Living Podcast, Alan Fadling shares a rich conversation with John Mark Comer, originally aired when his book Practicing the Way was newly released. John Mark is a teacher, writer, and founder of Practicing the Way and has spent years exploring what it means to be an apprentice of Jesus in the post-Christian West. Formerly the founding pastor of Bridgetown Church in Portland, OR, John Mark now develops spiritual formation resources for churches worldwide. Together, we explore how spiritual disciplines form us not just for today, but for eternal living—and how church communities can reclaim the Way of Jesus in a distracted, fast-paced world. We heard Jesus and Paul rightly tell us the problem with legalistic prescriptions that made Sabbath day anything but honoring to God. But we failed to see the assumption lying behind Jesus (Matt 11:28-30), Paul (Acts 13, 17, 18), and Hebrews (4:9-11), that God-honoring people would value resting from work, to remember and honor God as the sole creator and sustainer of our lives. The sermon today is titled "The Habit of Sabbath." It is the seventeenth installment in our series "Follow Me", and the fourth in the sub-series "Spiritual Habits." The Scripture reading is from Matthew 11:28-30 (ESV). Originally preached at the West Side Church of Christ (Searcy, AR) on June 29, 2025. All lessons fit under one of 6 broad categories: Begin, Instill, Discover, Grow, Learn, and Serve. This week, we will be studying 2 Peter 1:3-8 under the theme “Become Like Him.” As John Mark Comer writes, “You will never work harder for anything in your life than Christlike character, and nothing else will ever feel like such an unearned gift. This is a paradox you simply have to experience for yourself.” (Practicing The Way, pg. 111) Or, as Peter writes, "His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” (2 Pet. 1:3)SERIES SUMMARY: This series is based on the best-selling Christian book, Practicing the Way, by John Mark Comer. Send us a textIn a world obsessed with speed, productivity, and hustle, what is all this hurry costing us? In this episode, we slow down and take a deep breath to explore the spiritual, emotional, and relational toll of our nonstop lives. Drawing inspiration from John Mark Comer's powerful book, The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry, we unpack the rhythms of rest, presence, and purpose that Jesus modeled for us—and how adopting them can transform our everyday lives.
This week we're studying Colossians 3:1-10 and letting it inform our reading of John Mark Comer's Practicing the Way, in which he encourages Christians to “apprentice" Jesus. As Paul said, “Since you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is.” Since our status before God is secure, we are to be aware of his presence, attentive to his voice, and refuse to allow anything to keep us from him. We are to live a life that is conducive to knowing and growing in him. Our focus this weekend is on the first goal of apprenticeship to Jesus: to be with him.SERIES SUMMARY: This series is based on the best-selling Christian book, Practicing the Way, by John Mark Comer. THIS WEEK: This week, we will be studying 2 Timothy 2:1-9 under the theme “Apprentice to Jesus.” While the term “disciple” gets used frequently in Christianity, what exactly does it mean? Is there a distinction to be made between having faith in Jesus and being a disciple of Jesus? We'll see how the term apprentice is a helpful illustration to consider as we think about how Jesus trains us to carry out his work in the world.SERIES SUMMARY: This series is based on the best-selling Christian book, Practicing the Way, by John Mark Comer. It took decades to form you into the person you are. The stories you've come to believe and the ones you tell yourself over and over. The habits and routines you've come to rely on that define virtually every morning and every night of your life. The circle that you have chosen (or that has chosen you) for influence and connection. These have shaped you. What if you began to believe good, true, and healthy stories about God and yourself? What if your routines became intentionally centered on a faithful future? What if your most important influencers were not instafamous, but people who live in your town who have been formed into the image of Christ? The sermon today is titled "The Slow Fix." A Critique of Practicing the Way, Part 7 - Jesus is the One and Only, presented by Bob DeWaay and Barb Gretch. We discuss the informal logical fallacies of equivocation and false equivalence and show how John Mark Comer uses these in the book regarding the terms "disciple" and "apprentice." We can't be an apprentice of Jesus because He is unique--the one and only. (duration 00:20:46) Click here to play
Segment 1 • Expository preaching is drifting toward dry, academic lectures instead of soul-stirring truth. • Modern sermons often explain grammar and context but fail to spotlight Jesus. • The goal isn't just to educate minds but to ignite hearts with the beauty of Christ. Segment 2 • Too many pulpits aim for precision but miss power—biblical preaching should pierce the heart. • Reformers preached experientially, not mechanically—90% application, 10% exegesis. • Every sermon must ask: “Does this help me love Christ more?” Segment 3 • In 1805, missionaries signed the Serampore Agreement—still reshaping missions today. • Carey called us to treasure lost souls and learn their world to reach their hearts. • If we don't understand Gen Z's language and idols, we'll fail to evangelize them. Segment 4 • Tim Challies reviews John Mark Comer's latest book—filled with mystical practices and a deficient gospel. • Comer trades “Jesus crucified” for “live like Jesus”—but behavior can't save. • When mindfulness replaces repentance, the church loses the real gospel. – Preorder the new book, Lies My Therapist Told Me, by Fortis Institute Fellow Dr. Greg Gifford now! https://www.harpercollins.com/pages/liesmytherapisttoldme – Thanks for listening! In this teaching, John Mark Comer reflects on Colossians 3v15, inviting Followers of Jesus to “let the peace of Christ rule” in the core of their being. He shares his personal journey with anxiety and how cultivating inner peace is essential for living a life of love in a troubled world. Through Scripture and wisdom from church history, he reminds us that true peace is not the absence of conflict but a gift from God available to us now, even amid chaos. https://bridgetown.church/teaching
