Week 7: Crafting a Rule of Life Practicing the Way is a Christian spiritual formation movement, popularized by John Mark Comer, focused on becoming an apprentice to Jesus by learning "the way" of life He modeled, emphasizing spiritual disciplines (like Sabbath, solitude, prayer, generosity) within community to transform daily habits into Christ-like living, all detailed in a free course, book, and resources. It's about deep transformation, moving beyond mere belief to actively living out Jesus' teachings through practices that foster intimacy with God and becoming like Him in a busy world. In week three of our series on being an apprentice of Jesus - based on John Mark Comer's book ‘Practicing the Way' - Joanna looks at how we become more like Jesus. How are we transformed by the renewing of our minds to be the people we were created to be who reflect the love of God to those around us? (Romans 12:1-2)
In today's Christian culture, it often feels like the biggest offense isn't unbiblical teaching—it's pointing it out. But if the New Testament is clear that Christians are to divide truth from error, why are so many Christians uncomfortable with public discernment?Today I offer 10 reasons why, using backlash to my recent Unshaken Faith episode with Alisa Childers and Melissa Dougherty as a case study. In that episode, we reviewed the New York Times bestselling book Practicing the Way by John Mark Comer. Almost immediately we starting hearing the familiar responses:"Christians shouldn't criticize each other so much." "Content like this destroys unity in the church.""You should have gone to him first.""If you took the time to dig into his other resources, you would understand what he meant.""But it's been helpful to me."Here I explain why these critiques and several others don't hold up to biblical scrutiny. As we move into the season of Lent, we're offering a series to help each of us prepare the way of the Lord. It's a good time to take stock of our spiritual practices, and today's guide is the author John Mark Comer. In his book Practicing the Way, John Mark explores the practical realities of what it means to be an apprentice of Jesus:“It seems to me that the telos of the spiritual journey in the Christian way is becoming a person of love through deepening union with the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit…It's the two greatest commandments: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself, that Jesus put at the center of apprenticeship to him.” This episode is drawn from an online conversation recorded in 2024.

Sermon Summary:What does it actually mean to love our neighbor? This week we explored one of the most familiar stories Jesus ever told and discovered it might be more challenging than we have let ourselves believe. The story begins with a lawyer testing Jesus, asking what he must do to inherit eternal life. He gets the answer right, loving God and loving neighbor, but wants to narrow the field. Jesus responds with the parable of the Good Samaritan, and in doing so, flips the question entirely. The real question is not "Who is my neighbor?" but "To whom will I be a neighbor?"The priest and the Levite both had reasons to keep walking. We do too. We are busy, distracted, insulated by climate-controlled homes and cars and screens that show us pain from a safe distance while requiring nothing of us. But the Samaritan stopped. He saw a human being in need and co-suffered with him, which is the literal meaning of compassion.Pete Scazzero reminds us that many of us can recite the commandments and practice spiritual disciplines without ever connecting them to how we actually treat people. John Mark Comer puts it plainly: the single most important question on the spiritual journey is whether we are becoming more loving. The spiritual practices we have explored throughout this series are the trellis. Love is the fruit. We closed with five practical ways to grow in love: Believe that every person has intrinsic value. Behold the image of God in others. Be Listening with our full attention. Be a true peacemaker who leans into healthy conflict rather than avoiding it. And be curious, not judgmental.Love is what came down and changed the world. May we be known for that kind of love.URF WEBSITE: ➤ http://www.urfellowship.comSOCIALS: ➤ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/urfellowship/➤ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/urfellowship
In this episode of Unshaken Faith, we take a careful, biblical look at Practicing the Way by John Mark Comer, a book that has quickly gained popularity in Christian discipleship and spiritual formation circles. Many listeners have asked whether we recommend it and after a thorough review, the answer is no. We walk through the book's core framework, its view of spiritual formation, and how it defines discipleship and transformation. While some of the practices it encourages may sound helpful on the surface, we found deeper theological concerns underneath including influences that overlap with contemplative spirituality, charismatic/NAR-style formation models, progressive-leaning theology, and sacramental or mystical streams more commonly associated with Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic spirituality. Most importantly, we evaluate the book's message against the biblical gospel. Does it clearly present salvation by grace through faith? Does it ground transformation in the finished work of Christ or shift the center toward practices and processes? We explain where we believe the message drifts and why that matters for everyday Christians. Our goal is not to attack people, but to equip believers with discernment. We encourage you to think biblically, test everything against Scripture, and stay rooted in the true gospel. If this book has been recommended to you, or if you're already reading it, this episode will help you evaluate it through a clear theological lens.Consider the Lillies, by Johnny ArdavanisHappy Lies, by Melissa DoughertyAlisa's video on generational curses

What do you think is the most important thing in life? Would it be what you do--- Your job? Maybe your accomplishments? Your Hard Work? Your reputation? All of that is what people see from the outside. Or would it be what happens on the inside---- That deep rooted growth that happens where no one really sees it-- it is invisible? I think it has to do with what happens in the inner part of our life. I love this quote, "The most important thing in your life is not what you do, but about who you become." Today, I am so excited to highlight this book, *Soul Keeping by John Ortberg. The subtitle says Caring for the Most Important Part of You. Our Soul! I know you are going to learn so much from John's book -- it is full of wisdom. I share about John Mark Comer's Book, *The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry. My dad and I were both reading this book at the same time back in December 2024, so he was my podcast guest as we talked about this book. In this episode, pastors Clark Nunnelly and Hunter Beaumont join the podcast to discuss A Heart Aflame for God by Matthew Bingham and explore what “spiritual formation” means within a Reformed framework. They unpack Bingham's central claim that true spiritual formation is rooted in and fueled by Scripture and aimed at engaging the heart through the mind. They consider why many believers crave greater depth, how historic Reformed practices like Scripture reading, meditation, and prayer address that hunger, and why going deeper into Scripture is the path to lasting formation.Resources mentioned in this episode:A Heart Aflame for God: A Reformed Approach to Spiritual Formation by Matthew BinghamThe Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovering Our Hidden Life In God – The Masterful Guide to Apprenticing to Jesus and Authentic Christian Faith by Dallas WillardPracticing the Way: Be with Jesus. John Mark Comer reignites debate over substitutionary atonement.John Mark Comer has become one of the top-selling evangelical authors and might be the most popular Christian teacher among Gen Z, who are hungry for guidance in spiritual formation. When Comer posted to Instagram that Andrew Rillera's book Lamb of the Free delivered the “final biblical/exegetical knockout blow” to penal substitutionary atonement, he invited a bevy of Reformed rebuttals and reviews of Rillera.Even as he critiqued Reformed readings of the sacrificial system in Leviticus, Comer's own work received criticism for overlooking the church and historical confessions in discipleship. For more information about this group, please visit their website at reformationboise.com. It's the most wonderful time of the year… and the most exhausting. Between the decorating, the baking, the shopping, and the pressure to make everything magical, our souls can feel more hurried than holy. In this episode, we slow down to talk about what it really means to rest during the holidays, not just physically, but spiritually.Drawing from The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer, The Deeply Formed Life by Rich Villodas, and the practice of Slow Living, join us as we explore how doing less will actually help us experience more: more peace, more joy, and more presence with the people (and the God) who matter most.If you feel like you're carrying the weight of making the holidays “perfect,” this conversation will remind you that perfection isn't the point - presence is. You'll walk away with practical ideas to simplify the season, breathe deeply, and rediscover the sacred rhythm of rest, even in the holiday hurry.Show Notes:The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark ComerThe Deeply Formed Life by Rich VillodasSlow Living Articles:Already Stressed About the Holidays?https://www.latimes.com/lifestyle/story/2025-11-06/tips-holiday-overwhelm-stress-niro-felicianoHow to Slow Down During the Holidays https://caitlinhoustonblog.com/how-to-slow-down-during-the-holidays/Why Doing Nothing Intentionally is Good for Us: The Rise of the Slow Living Movement. https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20240724-why-doing-nothing-intentionally-is-good-for-us-the-rise-of-the-slow-living-movement
Who knows a rested woman? We all know women who are stressed out, burned out, exhausted, successful, anxious, depressed—but truly rested? This question from "The Relaxed Woman" stopped me in my tracks and led to one of the most important decisions I've made in years. In this deeply personal episode—number 77, a number that speaks of completion and perfect forgiveness—I'm sharing why I'm pausing the podcast for this season. But this isn't just my story. It's an invitation for every woman who's been giving her best to everyone else and her exhaustion to her family. We'll explore: The biblical significance of 77 and what completion really means Why pruning isn't punishment—it's preparation for new growth How hurry and love simply cannot coexist The revolutionary power of celebrating each other's brave NO's The parable of the fake pearls and what God might be asking you to release Featuring wisdom from Dallas Willard, John Mark Comer, Ruth Haley Barton, Emily P. Freeman, and Eugene Peterson's beautiful translation of Jesus' invitation to "live freely and lightly." This episode is for every woman stepping into November wondering how she'll survive another holiday season. It's permission to open your hands. It's an invitation to trust that God holds all things together—not you. What fake pearls are you clutching? What if your Father has real ones waiting? Episode Note: This is the final episode for this season as I step into Spiritual Direction training and explore finishing my degree at Mississippi State after 27 years. Thank you for 77 beautiful conversations. See you in the next season.
Spiritual Formation takes two forms -- intentional and unintentional. In this episode we examine the realities of each and chart a path to follow the call of God to "be transformed."

Even thinking about engaging in a conversation with kids about sexuality can feel scary, but Laurie and Matt Krieg have a heart to help parents approach the topic without fear. The Kriegs join Jackie and Preston to discuss moving beyond the shame-filled messages of purity culture – what was a “theology of no” – instead to a theology of goodness and flourishing. They talk about being your child's “anchoring bias” – the first voice a child hears on these topics – and why it's so important to respond like Jesus when your child is exposed to something online or confesses. Laurie and Matt also share about a new video series called “Raising Kids,” created with other thought leaders including Jon Tyson, John Mark Comer, Preston Sprinkle, and the Perrys, among many others. This 8-part video series is designed for parents of kids 12 and under, covering topics such as porn prevention, body safety, gender, and belonging. https://courses.christian-sexuality.com/courses/raising-kids Check out Laurie and Matt's upcoming book, Raising Wise Kids in a Sexually Broken World: A Gospel-Centered Approach, releasing January 2026: https://www.amazon.com/Raising-Wise-Sexually-Broken-World/dp/1514012146Scripture references:Psalm 88:1-5 This Episode is Sponsored By:https://magicspoon.com/PERRY — Get $5 off your next order!https://policygenius.com/perry — Compare free life insurance quotes from top companies and see how much you could save. This Sunday, guest Pastor John Mark Comer brought a timely word about receiving true rest in the gentle and humble heart of Jesus Christ when He reveals the Father to those who believe. As folowers of Jesus, we too must be in pursuit of becoming both gentle and humble. When we actively meditate on the heart of Jesus, we can receive the true rest that comes through confidence in who Jesus is instead of our own striving to manage and manipulate the outcomes of the world, and be more deeply formed into His image.
In this episode we ask ourselves the question of if Jesus is truly first in our lives. What does how we spend our time reveal? Today, we dive into the controversy surrounding evangelical pastor John Mark Comer's apparent denial of penal substitutionary atonement, or PSA, sparked by his endorsement of a book rejecting Christ's substitutionary death for our sins. We unpack what PSA means, why it's central to the gospel, and the dangers of dismissing it, with insights from theologians like Alisa Childers and Denny Burke.
