This week we discuss the epidemic of hate crimes in this country against the transgender community. Texas leads the country in violent crimes against transgender people of color. Tonight we look at violent crimes in Dallas, and specifically the murder of Muhlaysia Booker. TEXZEN is on the menu tonight! This red Zinfandel from our friends at 10 Mile Productions never disappoints! Texzen zinfandel started the creation of what is now 10 mile productions. Their first ever vintage, light bodies red wine showcases notes of vanilla, pepper & cherry. You can explore balanced tannins with a plum & currant finish. The second part of this week's episodes is now posted! This week, we turn to a heavy, difficult, but important topic - the horrifyingly rampant murders of transgender people. From a missing person and a recent, unsolved murder, to the long-since cold murder case of an iconic drag queen and a badass tale of survival, these cases demonstrate the nightmarish and unnecessary gauntlet of danger facing trans people in this country. This week’s episode is a little long but necessary and emotional, sorry not sorry. Megan focuses on the 2012 honor killings of Gelareh Bagherzadeh and Coty Beavers. She does a deep dive into what honor killings even are… which, in the very simplest of terms is an EXTREME form of a family disagreement and just gross and violent. As many people in Bachelor Nation know, Jordan Rodgers, JoJo Fletcher’s fiancee is also the brother of Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers. They’ve got a rather difficult relationship and have been estranged for quite some time. Megan does a deep dive into the brothers and their relationship and connects it all to the murders of Gelareh Bagherzadeh and Coty Beavers. Danielle talks about the assault and recent murder of Muhlaysia Booker who was a transgender woman from the bustling LGBTQ+ community of Dallas, Texas, where Joelle “JoJo” Fletcher and Chris Harrison are from. (If you want to skip the Bachelor talk, the first story kinda starts at 18:56 and really starts at 42:12 and the second story starts at 1:14:11). We also share some true crime news about: The Golden State Killer, The disappearance of Vanessa Guillen, a mini update about Lori Vallow, and COVID at San Quentin. It is time to invest not only in the solutions, but the actual people that have shaped & sharpened the solutions we need based on our lived experiences. "Living in Glass Jars" is the title to one of the chapters in my forthcoming memoir "Like A Butterfly". This chapter focuses on the days during my transition where I was sort of living in a glass jar of privilege. A handsome man found me crawling towards my destiny and took me home, put me in a glass jar and allowed me to spin my cocoon and transition in a safe environment. Because of this I experienced a lot of privileges that my trans brothers and sisters do not typically experience. I learned a lot of hard lessons, but I learned them through one man over the course of several years instead of playing the game of Russian Roulette that is dating while trans. In this episode Rev. Derek discusses how Auntie Maxine (Congressperson Maxine Waters) just continues to inspire us with her status as the "Queen of Shade" with one simple declaration: "If you wish to leave, you may." Rev. Derek also parallels the strength, courage, and example of the California Congressperson with the monstrous and vile recent beating of Trans Person of Color (TPOC) Muhlaysia Booker in Dallas Texas. He also calls for prayers for the 850 year of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris that recently caught fire. "Come discuss a region in my mind..." - Rev. Derek
