We have all seen the sensational images from the protests and unrest in L.A. following last Friday’s ICE raids. The ICE raids targeted immigrants at their workplaces, including Home Depot and a clothing store. Since then, the National Guard has been called up by President Trump to quell what he’s calling an “insurrection.” The use of that word, “insurrection,” is highly intentional, as is the effort by Trump and rightwing media to paint L.A. as a chaotic, lawless place. Trump is ratcheting up his mass deportation plans and Mayor Bass says that Los Angeles is the testing ground. The unrest in L.A. dovetails into an ongoing conversation we’ve been having with you, our audience. We’ll be joined by executive director of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI), Attorney Nana Gyamfi. BAJI advocates for the nearly 10 million Black immigrants, refugees, and families living in the U.S. As BAJI’s director, Nana will respond to some of YOUR comments critiquing our hosts’ support of migrant communities. Nana Gyamfi brings with her over three decades of service to the Movement for Black liberation, and over twenty years experience directing Black social justice organizations and networks. She is a human rights and criminal defense attorney, a professor in the Pan African Studies Department at the California State University Los Angeles, and a radio personality. Kirsten Gillibrand's hypocritical new plan for putting Democrats back in the majority. First, they are aghast at the general unrest in Los Angeles as ICE agents seek to round up criminal illegal immigrants. Although being just an eight-minute walk from the LAPD, it took two hours for police to respond to the attacks on the Roybal Federal Building. California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, and former VP Kamala Harris all claim overreach by President Trump for sending in the National Guard, but Jim and Greg note how the LAPD initially seemed disinterested in ending the violence. Now the LAPD itself is claiming to be overwhelmed. Next, Jim and Greg disdain the comical media coverage of the ‘mostly peaceful' LA riots. Local and federal sources say people are merely enjoying themselves as they watch fires burn, yet Jim has yet to see them enjoying chocolate and marshmallows around the burning cars. For some reason, Democrats are so afraid of appearing to be Trump supporters that they cannot stand by simple expectations of peace, law, and order. Last, they scoff at Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's plans to bring Democrats back to power by urging moderate Senate candidates in 2026. She's a strange person to deliver that message after her history of pretending to be a moderate in the House and then immediately becoming a far left U.S. Senator. President Trump has worked with the McLaughlin brothers since 2011 before he ever ran for president.
