What does it really take to move from a childhood in a Soviet special music school to the principal chair of a top American orchestra? The Cello Sherpa Podcast Host, Joel Dallow, sits down with Ilya Finkelshteyn to trace that journey, through refugee camps, early months in Minnesota with two suitcases and $300, a total technical rebuild at Juilliard with Harvey Shapiro, and a relentless audition circuit that demanded both resilience and precision.Ilya opens the curtain on how committees actually listen. The first-round filter isn't mystery or style, it's consistent intonation, reliable rhythm, and clear dynamic contrast. He shares the training habits that hold up under pressure: drones and tuners to expose tendencies, perfect intervals that must truly lock, open-string checks, and practicing in resonant spaces to hear pitch “hang” in the air. He even offers a pragmatic safety net for intervals when adrenaline spikes, an approach that protects musical integrity without freezing expression. We also dig into leadership from the first stand. Ilya's philosophy is simple and demanding: orchestra is chamber music writ large. He asks for active playing across the section, minimal talking from him to the section, sharp listening, and smart energy management. It took more than seven years to feel fully at home in the chair, long enough to cycle the core repertoire and learn when to blend and when to step out. Along the way, he makes a case for sustainable careers: secure an institutional “address” for stability, then build a rich mix of orchestra work, chamber music, solo spots, and teaching. If you care about orchestra auditions, cello technique, or the realities of principal leadership, this conversation delivers practical steps, hard-won insight, and a clear path you can apply today. If it resonates, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review—what's the one practice change you'll make this week? For more information on Ilya: https://www.ilya-finkelshteyn.com/You can also find Ilya on Facebook and Instagram: @ilfink1217If you are looking for in person/virtual cello lessons, or orchestral repertoire audition coachings, check out www.theCelloSherpa.comFollow us on Facebook, Instagram, Threads & YouTube: @theCelloSherpaFor more information on our sponsor: www.CLEAResources.com

Session Summary: What if the secret to extraordinary leadership has been sitting right in front of you—hidden inside every orchestra, symphony, and musical performance you've ever experienced? In this episode, we explore a powerful metaphor that reveals the true difference between average leaders and exceptional ones. Anyone can pick out a few notes on an instrument, but a real musician brings out the best in every part of the ensemble. Leadership works the same way. You'll discover why great leaders don't micromanage, why they refuse to play every part, and how they elevate each “musician” on their team to perform at their highest level. This episode will challenge the way you think about delegation, empowerment, and your role as the conductor of your organization's success. Enjoy! Leader Guide Download and follow along with fill in the blanks from the Leader Guide as well as the self/group reflection questions for you and your team to discuss. The Delaware Symphony Orchestra and its new music director, Michelle Di Russo is getting ready for the holiday season, presenting a pair of concerts in the coming weeks. The first of those concerts is also a new offering for the symphony, a family-friendly matinee concert at the Grand in late November. They'll follow that with Holidays at the Hotel early next month. On this week's Arts Playlist, DPM's Martin Matheny speaks to Michelle Di Russo to learn more about the concerts.
I've got a possibly controversial opinion about standing up at concerts. Last night, I went to see Metallica. Incredible show - way better than I gave them credit for yesterday. But here's what happened. We were in the stands, seated tickets. A few rows ahead, there was this guy who, the second Metallica hit the stage, jumped to his feet. Everyone else stayed seated, but not him. Hands in the air, devil horns flying, head-banging, air guitar, singing every lyric. He was having the best night of his life - and honestly, watching him made the rest of us enjoy it more. Not everyone agreed. People behind him started throwing cans. They hit him in the back; he ignored it. Then a couple of women clambered over seats, smacked him on the back, told him to sit down. He ignored that too. Eventually, a guy from way back stormed down, leaned across rows, got into a shouting match, even tried to physically drag him into his seat. After a few minutes, the head-banger gave in and sat down. But he couldn't help himself. Every time a new song started, he popped back up - horns up, air guitar blazing -before remembering he was “supposed” to sit. This went on until he finally squeezed into the stairwell so he could thrash without blocking anyone's view. You could tell it wasn't the same; cramped space, less freedom. Here's my take: If you're at a concert, you should be able to stand up and have the best time of your life - even if you bought a seated ticket. If someone in front of you stands, sorry, you're going to have to stand too. It's not okay to demand someone sit for the whole show. It's music, not a movie. And it's Metallica, not the Symphony Orchestra. I'm with the metal-head from last night. He paid good money to enjoy himself. If that means horns up, air guitar, and head-banging - let him do it. This episode of Side Projects is a little different. THey're all different, if I'm being honest. But this one is…unusual. I welcome two members of the National Symphony Orchestra to the show; principal flute player Aaron Goldman and principal cellist David Teie. It's a quick hitter so I'll have to have them back on. But we discuss how young they were when classical music grabbed them. They enlighten me on some of the workings of an orchestra, how auditions are done (it's really fascinating), and David's connection to Metallica. This episode was so much fun to do. I'll be taking my first trip to a performance at the Kennedy Center so they prep me on what to expect, even though they won't be performing (it's for French pianist Alexandre Kantorow). I encourage everyone to check out kennedy-center.org or @kennedycenter on YouTube or Instagram. And be sure to check out orchestral music wherever you live. You might be surprised at how “metal” it is! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
