We first get into a discussion about his informative and humorous podcast "Queer History 101" that he co-hosts with performer Peppermint (who should return to The Traitors, but that's a conversation for another episode)! Peppermint and Hugh work so well together because Peppermint is an expert at the current political moment for trans and queer folks, which balances Hugh's slightly more introverted (his terminology haha) historical research. Definitely listen to it after hearing our conversation! We discuss how Hugh's book combines personal memoir with cultural history and how his cover (featuring an ancient Greek statue and cassette tape) represents the analog to digital transition that happens from the 1990s to the early 2000s. The 90s was the last pre-digital era, and Hugh argues that 90s nostalgia among Gen Z and millennials stems primarily from remembering a time before we all were living in a constant age of connectivity (when everyone had their cell phones on them at all times). Hugh talks about what it was like growing up in the 90s where queer life existed in physical spaces like the gayborhood (featuring bars, bookstores, and clubs). What can we learn from Hugh's book about how to live in a digital world while also recognizing the importance of physical spaces? Just have a look, will you! Just when you think the Dahlias are on their way out, you're asked to come to the Botanic Gardens in Christchurch or a local beauty garden, somewhere nearby. A series of colourful plants that shows you a range that's totally unexpected – how do you get these at your place? From left to right: Mick's Peppermint, PomPom Rusty Orange, Le Baron, and KennemerLand Cactus. Currently it's still “growing time”, or seriously, keeping the plants producing before the beginning of winter. Generally speaking, the Tubers won't be available until mid-winter. Some varieties are able to be planted slightly earlier, others a bit earlier – just ask the people who produce the next generation. That means we have still plenty of time to go and visit the various Dalianthic “Hot Spot” and order the beauties you are looking forward to growing – Oderings, Dahlia Tubers, Stillwater Flowers, DahliasNZ.com, Mitre 10, Apollo Farm, etc. Bluetiful Dahlia Springtime is the planting time of the Tubers – no more frosts, etc. Plant about half a meter apart in well-drained soils, containing good compost with great fertilisers in the soil, where the new plants will benefit from the next level of NPK. All the fertilisers will be used to create new parts of the plants. Support them if they grow upward in a hurry, as some often do… Give them a good watering from time to time. They can be grown as Potted Dahlias, especially if the potting mix is of great quality. Once you start with Dahlias, you'll never forget this colourful movement ever again! On this episode of Restorative Reading & Writing for Wellness, I'm sharing all the details on my personal book apothecary for April 2026.Each month, I choose a one-word theme to guide my intentions and create a book apothecary to help me breathe that word into existence through reading, writing and learning. This month, my chosen one word theme is: RELEASE.If you follow the astrological calendar, then you know we just ended the year of the snake and just entered the year of the horse. Apparently, that means we've been shedding what no longer serves us to make room for more of what does. Technically, according to the calendar, I should be done shedding by now, but I'm not. =)I'm feeling called to release old expectations, leave old routines and rituals behind and even throw out at least half of the clothes in my closet. I'm wanting to let go of old grudges, release lingering negativity and reduce inflammation in my body, too. Hence, the word RELEASE.For me, the best way to welcome a new way of thinking, feeling and being into my life is through reading and writing, paying careful attention to the books I surround myself with and the prompts I write from so I can take inspired action in my life. Here's my current book apothecary ready to help me RELEASE this month. Scroll to see the contents below and press play on the podcast episode talking all about it.Restorative Reading:The three books I've chosen focusing on three different aspects of RELEASE I'd like to explore: release in my physical body, release in my emotional mind and release in my object-filled home. Here are the books in my apothecary this month along with the publishers blurb for each of them:Healing with Somatic Yoga: A 6-Week Journey to Release Emotions, Rewire Your Nervous System, and Reclaim Your Body by Brett LarkinAmazonIn 6 weeks, learn a groundbreaking somatic system that blends the three essential models of body-based healing. Whether you crave gentle nervous system regulation, cathartic emotional release, or the healing power of self-touch, this book offers a revolutionary approach to coming home to your body—not just another collection of gentle poses. Before We Forget Kindness by Toshikazu Kawaguchi Amazon / BookshopIn the fifth book in the sensational Before the Coffee Gets Cold series translated from Japanese, the mysterious café where customers arrive hoping to travel back in time welcomes four new guests:- The father who could not allow his daughter to get married- A woman who couldn't give Valentine's Day chocolates to her loved one- A boy who wants to show his smile to his divorced parents- A wife holding a child with no name . . .They must follow the café's strict rules, however, and come back to the present before their coffee goes cold. Another moving and heartwarming tale from Toshikazu Kawaguchi, in Before We Forget Kindness our new visitors wish to go back into their past to move on their present, finding closure and comfort so they can embark on a beautiful future. They Left Us Everything: A Memoir by Plum Johnson (Amazon / Bookshop)After almost twenty years of caring for elderly parents—first for their senile father, and then for their cantankerous ninety-three-year-old mother—author Plum Johnson and her three younger brothers experience conflicted feelings of grief and relief when their mother, the surviving parent, dies. Now they must empty and sell the beloved family home, which hasn't been de-cluttered in more than half a century. Twenty-three rooms bulge with history, antiques, and oxygen tanks. Plum remembers her loving but difficult parents who could not have been more different: the British father, a handsome, disciplined patriarch who nonetheless could not control his opinionated, extroverted Southern-belle wife who loved tennis and gin gimlets. The task consumes her, becoming more rewarding than she ever imagined.Items from childhood trigger memories of her eccentric family growing up in a small town on the shores of Lake Ontario in the 1950's and 60's. But unearthing new facts about her parents helps her reconcile those relationships with a more accepting perspective about who they were and what they valued. They Left Us Everything is a funny, touching memoir about the importance of preserving family history to make sense of the past and nurturing family bonds to safeguard the future. These are the three central texts that make up my apothecary this month, but I'm always open to new suggestions and adding along the way. If you have suggestions, let me know in the comments!Plus, if you'd like to get access to my bibliotherapy book calendar embracing this theme with a book recommendation for every day of the month, join my Restorative Reading & Writing Circle here on Substack!Restorative Writing:I'm focused on two kinds of restorative writing this month: expressive and affirmative. My expressive writing practice has truly brought so much release and pain relief in the past and I'm doubling down on that practice this month. I plan to listen to my body and heart and write freely about what needs to go. If you want to learn more about this special kind of writing, listen here. Another important aspect of my writing life will focus on affirmations this month. Here's a podcast episode talking through why this kind of writing matters. For whatever reason, I have a hard time letting go of the typical way I do things and the usual way I think. I plan to write and embody this affirmation from Cathy Heller on repeat throughout the month:I trust myself to acknowledge what nourishes me and release what no longer does. I imagine I might delve into some listicle writing too: lists of things to organize, donate and toss will certainly be one of them!Curiosities to Explore for Inspired Action:Somatic yoga has been calling my name for a while and this month, I'm truly sinking into it to help me release stress and negativity from my body. Brett Larkin's book is helping me learn, explore and grow and I'll press play on one or two or ten of her somatic yoga videos, too. Here they are!I'm hoping to learn more about lymphatic release, too. This topic seems to be EVERYWHERE on social media and I want to go underneath the posts to the science and see how it might benefit my health and wellness. This isn't a curiosity, but it is something I want to do: CLEAN MY CLOSET! Out with the old, in with the new. Out with the old stories, in with the new ones. Clearing clutter is emotional and cleaning your closet is an experience I hope to tackle. Things to Love:Everything. =) I do not want my focus on RELEASE to seem negative: out with the old and in with the new. Instead, I want to embrace that theme with a loving mindset and use love as the guidepost for moving forward. I recently found this poem and cannot get it out of my mind: The Question by Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer:All day, I replay these words:Is this the path of love?I think of them as I rise, asI wake my children, as I wash dishes,as I drive too close behind the slowblue Subaru, Is this the path of love?Think of these words as I stand in lineat the grocery store, think of them as I sit on the couchwith my daughter. Amazing howquickly six words become compass, the new lens through which to see myselfin the world. I notice what the question is not. Not, “Is this right?” Not,“Is this wrong?” It just longs to knowhow the action of existencelinks us to the path to love. And is it this? Is it this? All day,I let myself be led by the question. All day I let myself not be too certainof the answer. Is it this?Is this the path of love? I askas I wait for the next word to come. This poem is stunningly beautiful, isn't it?! This lens of love will guide me all month long, running parallel along with theme of RELEASE, and I hope it guides you, too. If you want more poems like these, add this book to your book apothecary this month. One more thing: Here's my aromatherapy tincture I'm creating for Spring release: 2 drops Lemon, 2 drops Lavender, 2 drops Peppermint. Heavenly. If YOU would like to build your book apothecary with me on the podcast, click here to apply!Once you've listened, I'd love to know what you think of this episode. Leave your thoughts in the comments!Let's Work Together!I love to connect with others around our shared love of reading and writing. Here are some ways we can work together to create a life you love where restorative reading and writing is at the center of it all:

Photo: Mrs. Crystal Claus, Peppermint the Elf, and Solte Santa, as portrayed by Colleen Payne, Qalch'ema Friedlander, and Jerry Payne, visit the Chifin Native Youth Center in Springfield, Oreg., Sunday, December 14, 2025. (Buffalo's Fire/Brian Bull) It's the holiday season with many families across Indian Country waiting for Santa's visit to reward all good children with presents. And while the mainstream depiction is of a jolly old elf who's white and decked out in a red, fur-lined suit, some Native Santas are inspiring yuletide cheer in their own ways. Brian Bull of Buffalo's Fire shadowed one across Oregon. At the Chifin Native Youth Center in Springfield, Oreg., a packed classroom welcomes Solte Santa, accompanied by Mrs. Claus, Peppermint the Elf, and others from the North Pole. Jerry Payne, the man behind the curly beard, explains his role. “'Solte' in Salish means 'warrior', so I wanted to honor that. And I'm a veteran myself. Every community has their own style of Santa so I wanted to make sure that the Indigenous Natives got to be represented as well.” Solte Santa has made nine appearances across Portland, Eugene, and other places this month, listening to kids' wish lists and posing for family photos. With a feathered bustle, candy cane staff, and festive beadwork, he contrasts sharply with the Coca-Cola Santa that's been widely iconic since the 1930s. But Payne says that's a plus. “The mall Santa or typical Santa that everybody knows like the Coca-Cola Santa … for whatever reason, kids are scared of that Santa. But I've had kids that … their parent would say that they would never come up to take a picture with me. Next thing you know, they're hugging me and jumping in my lap and we take a good picture. Their parents are crying because they never got a good picture with their kid.” A study involving an Oregon State University scholar looked at non-traditional Santas. Bori Csillag, Stirek assistant professor of management, said for many Father Christmases, spreading love and joy for the holidays surpassed the need to conform 100% to the mainstream depiction of Santa Claus. “They see the fit, they hear the calling in their heart, they know that they are able to portray their role successfully.” Besides Solte Santa, a First Nations dancer called Powwow Santa has been firing up social media, and there are many others across tribal communities, reminding people that the Christmas spirit exists for everyone. A Navajo children's television show returned this month with a holiday special. Jill Fratis reports. The “Navajo Highways” special is titled “Ya’ah’teeh Keshmish,” which is “Merry Christmas” in Navajo. It's the show's first full holiday themed episode. The creator of the series, filmmaker, and musician Pete Sands, says the show teaches Navajo language and culture. “Parts of it is my childhood, and part of it is how I wish my childhood was. It's a balance of both, and I think shining positivity on Indigenous cultures is important to do.” The series blends puppetry, storytelling, and Navajo humor, all set along the winding highways of the Navajo Nation. Sands says that a memory he had of a teacher using puppets to help children listen, gave him the idea to use them in his show. “Seen a teacher friend of mine who was trying to tell her first grade students to clean up, but they wouldn't listen to her, so she reached into her desk and she pulled out a hand puppet and started talking to her class, and they listened to her, through the puppet actually, and a lightbulb went off in my head like wait, maybe there's something to this. Maybe I can use this.” The holiday episode highlights traditional winter teachings, including family gatherings, gratitude, and the meaning of giving. Season two of the series begins production next year. Sands says there will be new puppets and new locations, but says the heart of the show remains the same: teaching children simple Diné words and phrases through everyday scenes and conversations. The “Navajo Highways” holiday special, and season one, is now streaming on the First Nations Experience (FNX) platform. It’s one of those Happy Hours where the guys aren’t drinking the same thing — because Fingers Malloy is battling a near-death chest cold and broadcasting from a separate location with Vicks, questionable medical advice, and zero sense of smell. Tony Katz goes back to the well with Blue Run High Rye Bourbon (111 proof), breaking down why it’s a must-have despite the $90–$100 price tag, from the caramel sweetness to the rye spice and that butterscotch finish that just keeps working. Fingers, meanwhile, abandons the hot toddy plan (no honey… and no honey guy) and leans hard into holiday comfort with Evan Williams Peppermint White Chocolate Eggnog — under $10, 30 proof, and allegedly approved by “doctors everywhere.” From there, Happy Hour does what it does best: a brutally honest conversation about money, insane car prices, $1,000 monthly payments, why paying cash still matters, and how used trucks suddenly feel like the only sane option. The guys also dig into interest rates, precious metals, AI replacing jobs, which careers are actually safe, and why some work simply can’t be automated. No scripts. No structure.Just bourbon, eggnog, economics, and the kind of conversation that happens when the microphones stay on, and the clock stops mattering. Follow Eat Drink Smoke on social media! Happy Monday, y'all. Hard to believe we're already in the last month of 2025. It feels like I just blinked and now I'm gearing up for 2026. Time flies when you're building, growing, and pushing the boundaries every single day. This week's episode is a full-speed update on everything happening behind the scenes — and right now, everything is hitting at once. It's chaotic, but honestly, it all makes sense. Every project on our plate matters, and none of them can be put on the back burner. We just need more bandwidth.First big announcement:Natural State Savages is officially set for September 19th, 2026, same venue, TheaterSquared in Fayetteville.People have already been messaging, planning their 2026 season around it. We're going to run through last year's competitor, judge, and audience feedback with a fine-tooth comb, but overall the reviews were incredibly positive — so the foundation is solid.Tanning is lined up, venue confirmed, still waiting on polygraph and photography confirmations, and we'll lock in the host hotel soon. Only drawback is that Lisa Lum's show lands the same weekend, so we may lose a judge or two — but rest assured, we will still have an A-team judging crew. The retreat is officially happening the last weekend of February through March 1st.I booked the Airbnb — and this place is unreal. Sleeps 21, sits on nearly 100 acres, has longhorns, horses, a pool, a huge kitchen, a billiards room, a mule you can drive around the ranch… It's a whole experience in itself.Group Tough Mudder package is booked.Food is covered.Gym access close by.BBQ spot just down the road.Price:$1500 general public$1000 for tribe membersWe're not trying to profit off retreats. The goal is simple: create meaningful experiences, build relationships, and give people memories that stick. By the time you factor in race fees, food, lodging, and the expert speaker, we're basically breaking even — and that's by design.Landing page goes up this week, and Chip and I still need to film the promo video for it.Y'all have been asking… and it's back.White Chocolate Peppermint launches Sunday, December 14th at noon CST.This is my personal favorite flavor — the one I could eat every day. We tried making a tallow version to see if it could beat the cacao butter base, but when it comes to white chocolate, cacao butter just wins. We even blind-taste-tested it with the team, and cacao butter was the unanimous choice. We made thousands last week, making thousands more this week. This batch is good.I hit a Dexa scan thanks to a crazy good Black Friday deal and came in around 13.1% body fat, with an A-plus score across the board. My weight's been hovering in the low 210s, calories around 2700–2800 on average, and lifts are steadily climbing — all signs are pointing in the right direction.I've opened up a new AMA system via Instagram — you can submit questions through the link in my bio, and I'll respond with short video clips. Chip and I are batching a ton of these today so we can start rolling them out throughout the week. This is exactly why we created The Work Podcast — to document the real-time grind. The mess, the momentum, the deadlines, the adaptations, the wins, and the chaos that comes with building something meaningful. And don't forget:White Chocolate Peppermint drops Sunday at noon.
