Ade Hassan had a lightbulb moment so good she couldn't believe it hadn't been done before: she had never been able to find a nude bra that matched her skin tone. So, she made it for herself and all the other women of colour who never had it before either. In this conversation, Ade tells Alex and Joe about her business idea that consumed her, the incredible yet terrifying moment when Nubian Skin went viral before they had a single product to sell, and how they almost missed an iconic opportunity with Beyoncé. Follow Ade, Nubian Skin and the team behind The Founders.
What if starting a business could open doors and opportunities beyond your wildest dreams? If you think that it's too good to be true then I'd love to introduce you to today's guest. We talk about how to validate your idea and fund your side hustle, the behind the scenes of going viral, celebrating the small wins and competing with massive retailers as a small business. Frustrated by the lack of skin-tone options for women of colour, Nubian Skin founder and our guest for today, Ade Hassan MBE, decided it was time for ‘A Different Kind of Nude'. Ever since, Nubian Skin has had an outsized influence on the fashion industry, being featured in every major fashion publication, supplying the wardrobes of major productions in Hollywood, the West End and on Broadway; and being selected to provide the underpinnings for the Beyoncé Formation Tour along with many other parts of the industry realising the need to be more inclusive. Ade Hassan knew she was onto something with Nubian Skin lingerie when she posted the first product photo on social media and gained one-thousand new followers in a week. It was 2014 and the photo went on to garner over thirty-five thousand notes on Tumblr and over twenty thousand followers on Instagram, in less than a month. The UK-born, London-based founder created the brand to satisfy her own need but the internet's response let her know that she'd struck a chord. After graduate school, Ade went into a career in finance but couldn't find suitable skin-tone lingerie and hosiery to go with her wardrobe. If she was experiencing this problem, she imagined that other women of colour had the same need. What she didn't realise was how immediate the need was.Nubian Skin has had an out-sized influence on the fashion industry, with many other parts of the industry realising the need to be more inclusive. In 2017 Ade was awarded an MBE at Buckingham Palace for services to fashion. The award was made to recognise Ade's commitment to her mission to redefine nude, and the impact she has consequently made on the fashion industry. In this episode, Ade tells us about the sacrifice that must be made in entrepreneurship, how she found her purpose, how she was awarded an MBE and much more.Topics* Getting a MBE* Sacrifice In Entrepreneurship* How Did You Find Purpose?* Advice To Those Who Dream Of Quitting Their Job** Having A Support System Around You Ade Hassan:https://www.instagram.com/itsadehassan/?hl=en Nubian Skin:https://www.nubianskin.com/ Ade's TEDx Talk:https://www.ted.com/talks/ade_hassan_the_reality_of_reaching_your_goal Powered By GoDaddy UK:40% off: https://bit.ly/3IZ0Ibc Tailor Brands:Pep for 40% off https://tailorbrands.go2cloud.org/SH5U FOR MORE HELP START HERE: purposefulproject.com
In a diverse world, the colour ‘nude' should reflect the people living in it. But lingerie brands have a lot of catching up to do. In this episode of Make or Break, we speak to entrepreneur Ade Hassan, who left her career behind to serve an untapped market in the world of lingerie. Unable to find lingerie or hosiery to match her skin tone, Hassan found herself frustrated. It was time to challenge the concept of what ‘nude' meant, and meet the demand of an underserved corner of the market. But Hassan's first challenge was to take a leap into an industry that she knew nothing about. As people of colour (or actually people in general) we are taught about the concept of nude as one homogenous colour - falling somewhere on the spectrum between peach and beige. The style media tells us that a nude court shoe will elongate our legs, a nude lip is a must have, wear nude underwear under white clothing, nude tights will keep you warm without ruining your overall look, but when the shades aren’t there, where does that leave people of colour? This is something we all face from a young age – felt tips and crayons at school, plasters, ballet slippers. We want to unpack and challenge the concept of nude as a colour and the exclusionary effects that it has on women of colour as they navigate through their journey of self expression.Exploring the various different tones of black and brown skin and the need for true representation for all shades, while discussing our never-ending search for the perfect nude lip.Unpretty Podcast https://www.instagram.com/unprettypodcast/ https://twitter.com/unprettypodcast Anita Bhagwandas https://www.instagram.com/itsmeanitab https://www.stylist.co.uk/beauty/the-changing-face-of-beauty/132781 Ade Hassan, MBEhttps://www.instagram.com/itsadehassan https://www.instagram.com/nubianskin nubianskin.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

One day Ade Hassan was shopping for nude tights that matched her skin tone but she just couldn’t find any. Out of frustration, she birthed Nubian Skin (https://www.nubianskin.com/) — a lingerie and hosiery brand which caters for women of colour. They launched back in 2014 with four staple shades, they ship worldwide and are stocked in House of Fraser (https://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/brand/nubian-skin/0.0.0.0036879.0.0.pl) , Fenwick of Bond Street and Asos (http://www.asos.com/women/a-to-z-of-brands/nubian-skin/cat/?cid=20208) , as well as retailers in the US, Nigeria and Caribbean. As one of the pioneers of the "inclusive nude" fashion movement — Ade sees Nubian Skin as something that is “more than a fashion brand” but “It’s about empowering women to embrace their differences.” In just a few years, the brand has achieved international recognition, with Ade winning Fashion Entrepreneur of the Year at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards and also being awarded an MBE for her services to the fashion industry.
