Brian Wansink was the Head of the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University. While there, he did exciting research that suggested eating healthier and encouraging others to eat healthier was as simple as providing subtle hints and nudges towards the preferred behavior. He's perhaps most famous for the claim that if you take a larger plate to the buffet, you'll eat more than if you were to take a small plate. For a long time he was easily the world's most prominent voice on food psychology. He published bestselling books. He was constantly interviewed by national media. He even had major influence in the government. He served for two years as the Director of the US Department of Agriculture's Center for Nutrition Policy. It's fair to say that Brian Wasnick affected how millions of people prepared, presented, and ate food. However, his reputation came crashing down from 2016 through 2018. It was discovered, partly through an accidental confession by Brian Wansink himself, that his papers were frequently based on shaky and perhaps outright fraudulent data analysis. The scandal was so bad that Cornell determined that Wansink had committed scientific misconduct and removed him from all teaching and research positions. This is a story about what happens when someone treats science like a business with the goal of gaining the most influence and media coverage, rather than a project of gaining an empirical understanding of the real world. I wanted to hear about the desert buffet approach, and at 5 minutes in, after hearing the same thing repeatedly (hey, it's hard to decide what you want to be when you grow up). The audio that started off the show was not as good as the audio quality of the rest of the show. It wasn't horrible, but it was noticeable. Did you miss the live reveal of the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE hosted by WIRED Brand Labs and moderated by Wired Editor Megan Greenwell? Fear not! We hit the record button and captured it in its full unedited glory for you to listen to now. In 2015, XPRIZE launched the $20M NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE, a competition to jumpstart the carbontech economy and tackle global warming. Last Monday, April 19th the winners were revealed in an online event hosted by the Wired Brand Lab. Megan Greenwell sat down with the winners and took questions from the audience listening live. CARBONCURE is a Canadian based company which extracts the CO2 generated in the production of concrete and recycles it back into the product. They started off small but now operate in many countries around the globe.UCLA CARBONBUILT came out of a UCLA lab where they designed a system to take CO2 and create a stronger concrete which is less reliant on Portland cement, a material responsible for 7% of Global CO2 emissions.Both won the NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE and took home a cheque for $7.5M each. When Bitcoin first appeared out of digital thin air, it was hailed as having the potential to upend the way people spent money. But more than a decade later, cryptocurrency is still only trickling into the mainstream. This week, Tesla bought $1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin and said it plans to start accepting it as a form of payment for its electric vehicles. The price of Bitcoin immediately spiked as the move seemed to signal a shift toward broader acceptance of cryptocurrency in general. But is this just another fleeting Elon Musk stunt, or will it actually be a sustainable way of doing business? Getting to know Jeff Fromm  Jeff Fromm has written four books over the last 10 years on Gen Z. He uses thought leadership to stimulate his sales funnel and content marketing as his inbound tool.    Diving into brand loyalty  Jeff thinks of loyalty in terms of frequency of use and price elasticity. Loyalty to a brand equates to using its products more frequently. It doesn't doesn't mean using the brand exclusively; it means I'm willing to pay a small premium for it.  Loyalty should matter to salespeople because when you're helpful to your customers, they'll want to work with you over and over. It's the difference between average outcomes and making a lot of money. Professional salespeople are empathetic, they have great listening skills, and they collaborate to solve problems.  Buyers don't want to buy your product; they want to solve their problem. Questions are your friend, because they help the seller become smarter about the buyer, and they lead to a sale that is a better fit to the buyer's needs. You have to have BANT: budget, authority, need, and timing. If you have those things in a buyer, then your job is to find the right solution. When you provide possible solutions, consider giving three different options and the cost range of each. That way you're guiding your customer to a solution that best fits his needs.  Show your customers the risk associated with their approach and point them toward the approach that is most likely to succeed. Give facts, and give customers places to cut corners if you can.  “You have to be willing to lose what you do not have to win what you want.” Jeff Fromm Culture is wildly important with brand loyalty. Create your culture by being inclusive and innovative. Hire people who are motivated and then empower them and give them good tools.   Be willing to collaborate. Leverage the power of your team by hearing their ideas. Find the people who are better than you at certain things.  To build loyalty with Millennials, spend time with them. Nurture them. They are looking for mentorship. Members of Gen Z are looking for opportunities to prove they are capable of doing something. He is the lead author of over 100 academic articles and books on eating behavior, including the best-selling Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think (2006) along with Marketing Nutrition (2005), Asking Questions (2004), and Consumer Panels (2002).  Wansink’s award-winning academic research on changing eating behaviors has been published in the world’s top marketing, medical, nutrition and obesity journals. It contributed to the introduction of smaller “100 calorie” packages (to prevent overeating), the use of taller glasses in some bars (to prevent the overpouring of alcohol), and the use of elaborate names and mouth-watering descriptions on some chain restaurant menus (to improve enjoyment of the food). His research focuses on how ads, packaging, and personality traits influence the usage frequency and usage volume of healthy foods. His research on consumption volume has won national and international awards for its relevance to consumers. His findings have been widely featured on 20/20, BBC News, The Learning Channel, all news networks, and on the front pages of the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. He is also  the author of Mindless Eating (2006) and Slim by Design (2014) as well as over 200 peer-reviewed journal articles. From 2007 until 2009 he was appointed by the White House as the USDA’s CNPP Executive Director in charge of the Dietary Guidelines for 2010 and the Food Guide Pyramid (MyPyramid.gov). He is a former bad open-mic comic and rock sax player. He lives with his wife and three girls in Ithaca, New York, where he enjoys both French food and French fries.
