In this special World AIDS Day episode of HIV unmuted, the IAS podcast, poet, advocate and researcher Bakita Kasadha joins host Juan Michael Porter II in a conversation that challenges preconceived notions and redefines how we discuss and address HIV stigma. Produced in collaboration with the IAS Heart of Stigma programme of IAS – the International AIDS Society – this episode dives into the transformative power of language, art and science in reshaping the global HIV narrative. Bakita shares her unique journey from poetry to advocacy and from being skeptical about research to becoming a groundbreaking researcher herself. Through candid dialogue, the episode explores the nuances of internalized stigma, the limitations of rigid language norms, and the necessity of inclusive and participatory approaches in HIV discourse. Bakita and Juan Michael discuss the role of grace, nuance, and allyship in dismantling stigma and how the arts can amplify voices and stories that have long been marginalized. This episode will leave you inspired to rethink stigma, reclaim narratives, and prioritize people in every aspect of the conversation. To find out how you can get involved this World AIDS Day (1 December), visit our World AIDS Day page. When our favourite artists and celebrities are in the headlines for the wrong reasons, it creates a dilemma for music fans – can we still love the music but distance ourselves from their reported behaviour? In the last two decades, some of the biggest names in music have been marred by scandal and criminal convictions. Can the art and the artist be truly separated? If not, what do we do with their work that created memories and a legacy in the genres we love?To get into it, Richie is joined by audio producer and rapper Chris Mitchell, aka Kinetik, and writer and head of editorial at Black Ballad, Jendella Benson.

In this week's Black World News, Kehinde Andrews discusses the MET police's nonsense claim that the use of the political term "coconut" is a hate crime following a MET tweet (since removed) in the form of a protest poster of Rishi "Rish" Sunak and Cruella Vader-man. He argues that terms of political critique like "coconut" and "coon," which point out agents of White Supremacy especially if they are Black and Brown aren't racist terms and slurs. We must continue to defend our history, language, political critique, and ultimately our Black political thought. - Check out the MIP YouTube Channel - In this week's guest interview, Kehinde Andrews talks with Dr Kadian Pow about her part-autobiographical book "Stories of Black Female Identity in the Making: Queering the Love in Blackness." It looks at how different aspects of love have shaped Kadian's Black feminine identity, from family lessons to romantic love to love of Blackness and community. Using anecdata from early life to her 30s, tracing themes of feminism. They also discuss her teaching Black Studies, her Black-owned business, respectability politics, and her transition from being a former born-again Christian. Her new book also part-inspired a mini summit event next Saturday, November 25th at Birmingham City University (BCU Curzon Building, B4 7BD) called "Black Women & Undoing Sexual Shame" (18+), organized by Black Ballad, event tickets are available here (For support: if you're a BCU student email Kadian.Pow@bcu.ac.uk and if you need help email support@blackballad.co.uk). - Kadian is currently a lecturer in Sociology and Black Studies at Birmingham City University (BCU), where she teaches courses in both Sociology and Black Studies with Kehinde Andrews (and his former PhD student). Her interest includes Black feminism, intersectionality, TV and social media, the sociology of Black natural hair, sexuality, and queer studies. In today's episode I sit down with Ata-Owaji Victor, a London-based beauty and lifestyle writer of Nigerian descent who writes for the likes of Black Ballad, Elle and Vogue and is on a mission to encourage discussions around the politics of beauty. Ata briefly touches on her ADHD experience and brings up so many thoughtful subjects, such as why we work the way we do; why work and labour are so prized and praised in society and why she chooses to nurture a neutral view of her body. Her mother comes up a lot in this conversation, and it's clear to see she not only influences how Ata sees her own body but she's also the one who taught her how to choose the right foundation. We discuss how makeup is all about expression and why it might be time to reclaim the word ‘beautiful'. This episode of The Goal Standard is supported by Remote Works, a podcast that tells extraordinary teams that made the shift to flexible working. Click here to listen and learn more about this podcast. Many thanks to Remote Works for their support! Representation matters in all areas, but especially in modern media. In the last few years, we’ve seen a huge increase in the amount of online media created specifically for black women, but only a few have been created in a way that can capture the nuances, struggles, and challenges that we all face. Black Ballad has done this so well. This is why I am so excited to have Tobi Oredein, founder of Black Ballad,a UK based digital platform for Black women on the podcast this week. Black Ballad was created due to Tobi’s realization of the lack of diversity in mainstream media in the UK. Her goal with the platform is to “help Black women in Britain live their best lives”, and I am here for it! Tobi’s journey to creating Black Ballad is also inspirational as it highlights the challenges that Black Women face in the media industry both as corporate professionals and entrepreneurs. In this episode we talk about: How Tobi created her media company Tobi’s experiences as a Black Woman in the UK What it is like to work with brands as a black woman How to get sponsorships from major corporations If you are interested in starting a business, creating a community, or making sacrifices for your dreams, this is the episode for you! From the archives 21/09/20 "There’s a saying in kriol that goes sorti na pé ki sta. It translates to luck is in the foot. Another saying says si bu sinta, vida na sinta ku bo, and this one translates to “if you sit, life sits with you” which is to say that things start happening when you start moving. My dad’s been saying that to me since the beginning of the year and it echoes in the back of my mind like a mantra as I carve this path." This week, we hear from Tobi Oredein, Co-Founder and CEO of Black Ballad, a UK-based lifestyle platform for Black British women. She talked about what drove her to found the site, why they decided to launch memberships ahead of the curve in 2016, and the impact of their recent HuffPost takeover. She also outlines how their Future News Funding will help them better serve and grow their audience outside London. In the news roundup, the team goes deep into Trump v. TikTok and its implications for publishers, looks at what good news means for The Telegraph around subscriptions, and discusses the BBC failing to close its gender pay gap. A slip of the tongue leads 'directors' to become 'dictators'.
Sparked by the Black Lives Matter protests around the world that followed the death of George Floyd, companies are wading into the conversation on racial inequality. With a focus on diversity in business, there was also interest and investment in a lot of companies run by black people in the UK. Tobi Oredein, founder of media company Black Ballad, asks businesses including a home-ware maker, an interior design firm and a global bank if this is all a trend or if there will be substantial and long-term change. Today's episode is with Tobi Oredein. Tobi is the Founder and Editor of Black Ballad and a freelance journalist based in London. She can be described as an enthusiastic journalist who is passionate about creating unique content that simultaneously engages readers and that puts publications and brands on the cutting edge. I recently came into contact with her when I read her article on BuzzFeed entitled How I Learned To Be Both Nigerian And British. I loved how raw and honest she was about her identity crisis growing up and how she eventually learned to accept herself. I reached out to her and we immediately bonded over our mutual Nigerian heritage. We talked about what it means to be black today, feminism, identity and the significance of Michelle Obama.
