Jason brings with him 3 key areas of expertise – strategic image-making for global fashion retailers, leadership experience growing a small business, and a passion for applied ethics surrounding the needs of marginalized and exploited communities. Since 2006, Jason has been integral in growing YARD – a strategic image-making agency in New York – and now leads their expansion efforts as Chief Growth Officer. Jason has established and led relationships to strategically craft and design communications platforms, brand identities, multi-channel advertising campaigns and targeted retail promotions across a range of clients in fashion, retail and socially conscious lifestyles, including John Varvatos, Tumi, Kenneth Cole, Perry Ellis, Converse, Timberland, Equinox, Method, Shea Moisture and Smartwater. Olamide Olowe is a born entrepreneur. The Topicals skin-care founder grew up in an entrepreneurial household and pursued track running, which enabled her to earn a scholarship to UCLA, where she initially studied pre-med to become a dermatologist. Topicals was born after Olowe's college roommate revealed a family connection to SheaMoisture. On the latest episode of the Glossy Beauty podcast, Olowe said she learned that skin care, dermatology and beauty could be made accessible over the counter. The name Topicals serves a dual function because it means both something applied on the skin and something that is culturally relevant or topical. Topicals is dedicated to helping chronic skin issues like eczema and psoriasis for all types of consumers and is sold through Sephora and its DTC e-commerce. Topicals has received wide praise since its launch in 2020, including being honored by Allure's Best of Beauty in 2023 and Women's Health 2023 Skincare Awards, among others. But the journey to get there was not easy. Just like many other female and BIPOC-founded brands, Topicals had a difficult fundraising experience, at first. But the brand went on to raise $15 million in outside funding. On the latest Glossy Podcast, Olowe spoke with Emma Sandler, beauty and wellness editor at Glossy, about her entrepreneurial vision for the beauty industry, Topicals' early entry into Sephora and streetwear culture's influence on her business.

Leaders fail when they don't prioritize customer service. Leaders often believe that customer service is the last step of any process, but it should come first because it can make or break your team and your business. Every leader needs a plan to provide customer service no matter where your team falls in the organization. I host Aneto Okonkwo, CEO of Chatdesk, where he shares a simple strategy every leader can use to increase customer service.  Chatdesk is a software and machine learning company in the customer service industry.   They help brands scale their customer support efficiently and drive conversions particularly on social media channels.  The mission of the company is to solve customer service and create jobs. Thousands of freelance Chatdesk Experts across the US and around the world use the Chatdesk platform to earn income on demand by providing support for brands that they love. Their typical clients are e-commerce and retail brands like OLAPLEX, Shea Moisture, Thinx, SSENSE and more.  Chatdesk helps them provide fast and personalized responses to customer questions to help drive conversions. Clients are able to get up and running in 2-3 days and they typically see 10-15% of customer conversations converting to sales while achieving 90%+ customer satisfaction. Prior to Chatdesk, Aneto worked as a leader at Google working on products like Voice Search and the Google Assistant.  Earlier in his career he held roles at McKinsey & Company, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs and Silicon Valley startups. Aneto holds a BS and MA from Stanford University where he was a Mayfield Fellow.  What You'll Discover in this Episode: The one question that helps you determine what business to create. Family dinner-time conversation as a leadership advantage. The incredible story of why Chatdesk was founded. What it's like having a tennis superstar, Serena Williams, as an investor. Three strategies to quickly boost your team's customer service. Rise of the fractional executive. The cornerstones of customer service. The product failure at Google that accelerated his career. On the podcast this week, Canadian Musician Editor-in-Chief Mike Raine has a thoroughly inspiring and interesting conversation with Toronto soul-pop singer, songwriter, producer and director, Domanique Grant. She's recently released part one of a new double EP, QUEEN/DOM. Grant's life story and how she has shaped her art and career is a fascinating tale, and she really opens up about it in this conversation that is sure to inspire a lot of other indie artists. In addition to the music, Domanique is truly an enterprising artist with a lot on the go; to start, she has landed major sync placements with L'Oreal Paris, Unilever Brands (Dove, Vaseline, Shea Moisture) and more; led a sold-out TEDx Talk with a full performance; featured at Uganda's Pepsi World AIDS Day for audience of 40,000+; has headlined her own shows and opened for TIFF film premieres to Mr. Vegas; Grammy Award-winning artists Eddy Kenzo and Wale; to being the featured performer at events including Black Diamond Ball Awards, the United Nations, and more. Domanique also produced RBC's The Imagine Summit, supporting artist-entrepreneurs in imagining beyond the limitations of the current global climate, by offering exclusive access to industry leaders, mindfulness training, and financial resources.

‘A fundamental shift': Consumer investor Mags Kala on the growing crypto space

The leap from Richard Branson to crypto isn't that big, as it turns out. For venture capitalist Mags Kala, all it required was quitting her day job. Kala used to work at Bain Capital, helping out big brand names like Shea Moisture and Virgin Voyages. But one day she decided to leave it all behind and strike it out on her own. After about a year of going solo, she's become especially keen on the Web3 space. On this week's episode of the Modern Retail Podcast, Kala explained how and why she made the jump. For her, as a consumer investor, she wanted to be on the ground floor of the biggest changes in regards to how regular people spend their time and money. That's what initially turned Kala on to the world for crypto. What was it that made it click? According to Kala, an expensive digital avatar of an ape. “Joining the Bored Ape NFT craze was very eye-opening for me,” Kala said. Here, she was describing the company Bored Ape Yacht Club, which auctions off pixelated pictures of apes using blockchain-based contracts and cryptocurrency. While it's a phenomenon mostly for people online (with a lot of money to spare), Kala said the rise of these NFT artists made clear many other things as well. At its core, these types of new programs hit at a base-line question she's always trying to answer as a consumer investor, Kala said: “What's truly next for the consumer economy?”

Shea Moisture Backlash- "Woke" Twitter got insomnia again?! *Bonus Episode*

The #woke twitter gang has insomnia apparently, because they were "woke" enough to pick out the disparaging characteristics of a hair care ad on YouTube by Shea Moisture. If you haven't yet seen it, the ad features a diverse set of women who (presumably) Shea Moisture now wants to participate in patronizing their LINE of products (emphasis on LINE because Shea Moisture has an entire line of products from shampoos to soaps to lip balms)! Black women are outraged because from their perspective, Shea Moisture owes black women their loyalty in exchange for their continued support. Do they have a point? Other may say, Shea Moisture is a business like any other and the objective is to be profitable. Hmm...they might have a point too. Let's debate this.
