Samantha Ege is both a leading scholar and interpreter of Florence Price. In this interview, she talks about her recent book “South Side Impresarios: How Race Women Transformed Chicago's Classical Music Scene”. I was fascinated to learn about this compelling history of Chicago's Black Renaissance with women such as Nora Holt, Margaret Bonds, and Katherine Dunham. Dr. Ege shared how the scholarship side of her work informs both her identity as a pianist and also how this research and storytelling cause her to reflect on some of her own challenges. We also talked about some of her other recent recording projects, including the upcoming Avril Coleridge-Taylor piano concerto and chamber music with Castle of our Skins, and she reflected candidly on her personal creative life as a writer, performer and composer. The first great Black filmmaker Oscar Micheaux inspired the 70s revolution of urban dramas and comedies that served as the launchpad for the gritty hip-hop action pieces and soulful family romances of the 80s and 90s. I had the best time chopping it up with Illustrator/Designer Mia Saine. This Arlington, TN native's family purchased land and bartered with one another in the 90's. Mia actually grew up in the midst of development in Arlington which welcomed new classes of people and many adjustments. She is the youngest of three siblings and was greatly influenced by her grandmother as a child that fostered her creativity. As a high school student, Mia was introduced to Graphic Media, Design and Screen Printing. She received a scholarship to attend Memphis College of Art where she excelled and began freelance work. In those early days Mia began working with clients such as New York Times, MLK50 and the singer Kirby working on branding. As she gained more clients, Mia's knowledge of negotiating and understanding contracts developed. She was able to help others in the art community in those areas during this Black Renaissance. Mia describes the Memphis art community as young, animated, innovative and energetic. As of today, Mia has signed with the Anna Goodson Agency from Quebec, Canada. This partnership is complimentary in the aspect of legal needs, advocacy and collaborations. Mia is adamant about keeping social issues at the forefront of her work using her art as a learning opportunity. Mia shares that during her Skittles collab she actually came out as a non-binary, black queer artist. She wants others to know that overcoming self-doubt is a game changer in any industry. Utilizing the power of social media as a canvas for your talent is extremely important. You can find Mia's Target Holiday Collection in stores right now. This project was special to Mia as she was able to showcase gratitude by highlighting black families and some of her favorite memories.

I will be shouting out all 5-star reviews on the show!Today, we sit down with returning guest Kendra Barnes, founder of The Key Resource and a real estate investor. In today's conversation Kendra speaks to us about her new book, Acres, which contains inspiring stories of 25 real estate investors who are normalizing Black wealth, one acre at a time.Part of her inspiration behind writing this book is her observation that there is a “Black Renaissance” of sorts taking place today, where investing among the Black community is drastically gaining steam. To Kendra, this is Black history in the making, and it's well worth documenting.Listen in as Kendra offers her tips on navigating times of uncertainty such as the pandemic, and how to determine whether it's time to sell a property. She also speaks on the unique opportunity that is the Travel Nurse rental, and her two pieces of advice for new or aspiring investors.Highlights1) Kendra acknowledges that her story is unique, inspiring, and empowering; but, everybody else who has tasted success in this industry has a story as well. It's important to collect different experiences and viewpoints, as doing so can result in a rising tide that raises all boats.2) Real estate is considered “passive income”, but there are seasons. There will be weeks—if not months—where nothing happens, and other weeks where you have an influx of business. Take note of the pros and cons as you hold your properties over time to give you greater clarity on when it might be time to sell.3) If you're just getting started in real estate investing, begin with a money goal in mind. This will help you work backwards and create a game plan for where you need to be. Also, once you acquire your first property, put yourself in a position to pivot in case your initial plan doesn't work out.How to find herWebsite - https://thekeyresource.com/Book - https://getyouracres.com/?ref=32IG - @thekeyresourcePre-order my new course "A Beginner's Guide to Finding Your First Tenant"- https://bit.ly/firsttenantcourseLearn how to invest out of state- https://www.outofstatemoney.com/ Access all of our resources on our website- https://www.blackrealestatedialogue.com/linksJoin the B.R.E.D. Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing award-winning debut author Denny S. Bryce. Denny won the RWA Golden Heart® and was a three-time GH finalist, including twice for Wild Women and the Blues. She also writes book reviews for NPR Books and entertainment articles for FROLIC Media. Additionally, the former professional dancer and public relations professional is a self-proclaimed history geek. She credits this obsession to her maternal grandmother, Ella Elizabeth Joseph, who immigrated from Montego Bay, Jamaica, to New York City in 1923. Recently, Denny relocated from Northern Virginia to Savannah, Georgia. In this episode Denny and I discuss: What she hoped to accomplish by writing about two vastly different generations. Why she loves the third person close POV and what it creates for readers. How she built the world of 1920s Jazz Age Chicago and the Black Renaissance. Plus, her #1 tip for writers. Forty acres and a mule (from Wikipedia): is part of Special Field Orders No. 15, a wartime order proclaimed by Union General William Tecumseh Sherman on January 16, 1865, during the American Civil War, to allot land to some freed families, in plots of land no larger than 40 acres (16 ha). Sherman later ordered the army to lend mules for the agrarian reform effort. However, Abraham Lincoln's successor as president, Andrew Johnson, explicitly reversed and annulled proclamations such as Special Field Orders No. 15 and the Freedmen's Bureau bills. The goal of the BAF is to create a sustainable independent source of capital to fund a national Black economic and community development agenda and to support the talent of Black people to foster a new Black Renaissance that reflects the collective genius of people of African descent. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jeannine-white/message

On Today's Show:Washington Post columnist Perry Bacon, Jr. talks about his recent column that makes the case that the focus on inclusion and diversity that's led to what's been called a "Black Renaissance" is good for all Americans.
