Send a question or message to Kate & SamWelcome to Episode 12 of the Roadmap to Business Success series, and our third episode in Quadrant 3: Grow Smart | Capacity! Most businesses pour their energy into acquiring new clients. The most successful businesses pay enough attention to what happens after the sale. Did you know that it costs five to seven times more to acquire a new client than to retain an existing one? And your best marketing is a client who won't stop talking about you and refers you to all their friends. In this episode, Kate and Sam get practical about how to design a client experience so consistently good that it turns happy customers into raving fans who refer others , and keep coming back themselves."Your best marketing is a client who won't stop talking about you. Design your experience to create those people."We cover:Why remarkable experiences don't happen by accident: Every great client experience is the result of intentional design and consistent systems, not luck or personalityThe client journey map: How to identify every touchpoint from first enquiry to final delivery, and why systemising each one is the foundation of consistent qualityOnboarding done right: Why what happens immediately after someone pays you sets the tone for the entire relationship, and the simple automations that eliminate no-shows and buyer's remorseHuman versus automated: Why you need to understand your client journey manually before you automate any part of it, and where technology enhances the experience versus where it undermines itFeedback as a growth tool: Why positive feedback tells you nothing useful, and how to ask questions that actually reveal where your client experience is falling shortThe Google review system: Why asking once rarely works, and why timing your request immediately after a win dramatically increases your conversion ratePost-engagement follow up: Why the relationship shouldn't end when the contract does, and how a simple check-in system keeps clients warm and generates referralsLiving up to the hype: Why it's always better to shrink your marketing promises and over-deliver on the experienceThe consistency formula: Systems create consistency. Consistency creates trust. Trust creates referrals. Referrals create growth.Kate and Sam also share real stories from the experience side, good and bad. They also discuss the exciting frontier of AI avatars that can deliver personalised video messages to new clients, and why the businesses that combine smart automation with genuine human warmth are the ones that will win long-term.Coming Up Next: Episode 13 Designing a business that doesn't break you. How to protect your energy, design for sustainability, and make sure that as your business grows, your life gets better, not worse.Join the Workshop: Kate and Sam are hosting their Grow Smart Workshop on Wednesday 24th June — bring your questions on business models, capacity, hiring, client experience and scaling and get coached live.
Story is food for humans. We spend a lot of time thinking about what nourishes us physically, emotionally, and mentally, yet many people are starving for story. Not only for information, instructions, and guidance. But authentically told story that carries something real and can be the food for something else real to grow. There are all kinds of stories in the world. Stories that shape cultures. Stories that influence behavior. Stories that travel through families, communities, and generations. Stories that programs tell. Stories that become identities. What interests me most are the authentic lived stories of transformation. The stories that reveal something true, that don't ask you to believe anything, but allow you to witness and know how a transformation unfolded in real time. The Nourishment of StoryA genuine story carries more than information. It carries experience, wisdom, meaning and a transmission of something that was lived and discovered and overcome. Many of the people I've worked with think no one wants to hear their story. Yet even the most ordinary moments can become deeply nourishing when shared authentically. When a story is told from a place of presence, it becomes something others can recognize in themselves which is a feast for the essence of who we are. What We'll Together ExploreWhy story is essential nourishment for human beingsHow stories shape perception and experienceThe stories programs tell and how they sustain themselvesAuthentic stories of transformationWhy people underestimate the value of their own storiesWhat happens when stories are told and re-told over timeHow stories evolve, deepen, and continue to reveal meaningWhat Inspired Re-TellMicah Ellars inspired this podcast, and when he can, I'll have him on for a Part 2—or even Part 3!Today, as I write these notes, I had the honour of hearing more of how his life unfolded. I was hungry and have heard others ask to hear the story behind his wellspring of truth, knowledge, and unique gifts for helping others transform. It was riveting. I was the whole time very aware that there was far more left untold than told.Micah graciously agreed to let me record our conversation and share it with those who are interested in self-remembering and in understanding how he arrived at this place in his life—where he and I are now working together, and where he's bringing his experience in acting, filmmaking, coaching, and teaching into service of that work.He spoke about what led up to our meeting, and the synergy that emerged from it. He talked about what led up to our meeting, and the synergy that came of it. (Stay tune for more on how to see it soon!!!)I think what I enjoyed most about hearing his story was witnessing how seemingly separate threads of a life can reveal a deeper coherence when seen as a whole.Discover other deprogramming and archetype courses at www.bethmartens.comApply for a zero-cost, one-on-one chat about working together: https://www.bethmartens.com/awaken-your-journey-archetype-applicationFind out your King Hero Archetype in ten minutes: https://www.bethmartens.com/king-hero-archetype-quiz-sign-upApply to become a House of Free Will Member: https://www.bethmartens.com/house-of-free-will-applicationDo a starter online course: Deprogramming 101 or Find Your Sacred Purposehttps://www.bethmartens.com/deprogramming101https://www.bethmartens.com/find-your-sacred-purpose-online-course
Are templates helping your interior design business… or hurting it?In this episode of the Interior Design Business Podcast, I explain why templates often create more problems than they solve for interior designers. Many designers rely on template contracts, letters of agreement, proposals, and deliverables because they want a faster, easier way to start projects. But the reality is that every project is different, every client is different, and every successful design business requires thoughtful planning and customization. In this episode, I break down why one-size-fits-all templates fail, what deliverables actually are, how boundaries protect both you and your clients, and why a properly crafted letter of agreement is one of the most important business tools you have.We also discuss project planning, payment structures, client expectations, legal protections, and how organizational systems create more profitable projects and a better client experience. If you've ever searched for the perfect template to solve your business challenges, this episode will show you why the real solution is developing the skills and systems behind the document. In this episode, we cover:Why templates create problems for designersThe purpose of a strong letter of agreementWhat deliverables actually meanWhy every project requires customizationCreating boundaries that protect profitabilityStructuring payments and cash flow correctlyPlanning projects before design work beginsProtecting yourself with legal languageWhy organization improves client experienceThe connection between systems and profitabilityShow notes are available at interiordesignbusinessacademy.comFollow us on Facebook: facebook.com/InteriorDesignBusinessAcademyFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/interiordesignbusinessacademy

In this solo episode, Axel tackles one of the most overlooked — and potentially damaging — mistakes new real estate investors make: seeking advice from the wrong people. Not wrong because they're unsuccessful, but wrong because they're in a completely different season of life, operating in a different market, or simply too many steps ahead to give advice that's actually actionable for where you are right now. This episode is essential listening for any investor at any stage of their career who wants to think more clearly about where to source advice, who to model their decisions after, and how to find mentors who are actually in a position to give contextually useful guidance.Join us as we dive into:Why seeking advice from someone 10 steps ahead of you is often more harmful than helpful — and why contextual relevance matters more than raw experienceThe three investor archetypes: the 25-year-old (aggressive risk, bridge debt, self-managing, hairy deals), the 40-year-old (moderate risk, stabilized debt, B-class assets, capital preservation), and the 55-year-old (winding down, passive income, protecting net worth)Why the 55-year-old's advice to "avoid risk, buy in great areas, don't partner" is not wrong — it's just wrong for a 25-year-old trying to scale fastHow Axel at 31 can already feel himself shifting from aggressive growth to capital preservation — and why that shift happens naturally as your season of life evolvesWhy market context matters just as much as experience level: an Ohio investor buying at $80K/door and a Boston investor buying at $300–$400K/door are playing fundamentally different gamesWhy lifestyle design matters when choosing who to learn from — and why Axel doesn't want advice from someone running a 5,000-unit operation with a 15-person team if that's not the business he wants to buildWhere Axel currently seeks advice: investors controlling 1,000 units, raising $10–$20M/year, transitioning from small-to-mid deals to 50–100+ unit acquisitionsAre you looking to invest in real estate, but don't want to deal with the hassle of finding great deals, signing on debt, and managing tenants? What actually creates a great company culture? Is it the values written on the wall… or the behaviors happening behind closed doors? In this episode of Success Leaves Clues, Robin Bailey and Al McDonald sit down with Jessica Lewis from PointsBet to explore what it really takes to build high-performing teams, strong workplace cultures, and leadership environments where people genuinely thrive.Jessica shares her journey from executive assistant to senior people leader, unpacking the lessons she's learned while scaling teams in fast-paced, high-growth organizations. From mentorship and strategic hiring to difficult feedback conversations and leadership accountability, this conversation reveals why culture is never owned by one person. It's built collectively, reinforced daily, and tested most during difficult moments. This episode dives into the realities of modern leadership, including the growing role of AI in HR, the importance of trust and transparency, and why the best leaders understand that people strategy is business strategy. Jessica also shares her passion for creating more opportunities for women in leadership and building workplaces where more voices are welcomed to the table. If you've ever wondered why some organizations create loyalty, growth, and energy while others quietly lose their best people, this conversation offers a powerful look at what separates healthy cultures from performative ones. You'll hear about:Why company culture is built through everyday behavior, not mission statementsWhat leaders reveal about culture behind closed doorsThe hiring mistake that quietly damages organizations over timeWhy technical skill alone is never enough for leadership successHow mentorship changes careers and builds long-term confidenceThe importance of giving feedback early and with kindnessWhy trust and transparency are critical for strong workplace culturesHow AI is reshaping HR and the employee experienceThe role frontline managers play in reinforcing company valuesWhy creating more women leaders matters for the future of businessWe talk about:00:00 Introduction to Jessica Lewis and PointsBet02:00 From executive assistant to people leadership04:30 Why HR became Jessica's purpose and passion06:30 Staying ahead in leadership through mentorship and community08:30 The connection between leadership and company culture10:00 What actually causes workplace culture to break down11:30 Why culture is revealed behind closed doors13:00 Hiring for values, not just technical competence15:30 How fast-growing companies redefine leadership needs17:00 Giving feedback early and building accountability19:00 Technical skill vs cultural alignment, which matters more?21:30 The leadership lessons mentorship creates23:30 Building confidence as a woman in leadership25:00 Why representation and equity in leadership matter26:30 The future of workplace culture and leadershipConnect with JessicaLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessica-lewis-86744352/ Website: https://on.pointsbet.ca/ Connect with UsLinkedIn: Robin Bailey and Al McDonald Website: Aria Benefits and Life & Legacy Advisory Group
Every family knows the feeling. You spend $1,000 to get everyone to the happiest place on Earth, and by 1:30 someone's crying, someone's sunburned, and somebody just paid $18 for a hotdog. Robert Niles from Theme Park Insider (the site that Robert jokes AI is pulling all its theme park data from) comes back to the basement to help you avoid that fate. This year he's also got strong opinions on which park is winning summer 2026, and it's not the one you'd expect. What You'll Walk Away WithWhy the biggest theme park mistake families make has nothing to do with the park -- and everything to do with who's in the crew going with youWhich park Robert says is winning summer 2026 -- including a brand-new attraction that combines rollercoaster, dark ride, and water ride into one experienceThe quick game: lightning lane passes, VIP tours, park hoppers, character breakfasts, fireworks packages, meal plans -- worth it, skip it, or depends? Why Tokyo DisneySea is boss-level theme parking -- and the specific 10-minute window that determines whether you get on the top rides or wait four hoursThe sleeper parks most families overlook -- including one with a water park included in the ticket price and another that Herschend hasn't bought yetHow to use the Theme Park Insider community to find the actual strategy for any park before you arrive -- written by real visitors, not AIWhy sit-down air-conditioned lunch in the middle of a hot park day might be the best $40 you spend all summerThe over-planning trap -- and why having a plan matters less than being willing to abandon itWhat a Netflix show taught CNBC about health insurance deductibles -- and why one in four Gen Z adults still doesn't know what a deductible actually isThe HSA trap hiding inside high-deductible health plans -- and why choosing the cheaper plan can end up costing you far moreWhy This Matters NowSummer is when families spend real money on experiences that either become great memories or expensive regrets. A little planning separates the two more than most people think -- and the same principle applies to health insurance. Both conversations in this episode are about making sure the money you spend on your family actually delivers what you paid for. From the BasementRobert Niles from Theme Park Insider joins Joe and OG to kick off summer 2026 -- and Joe finally confesses that going to Dollywood last year changed his life. The headline segment tackles a CNBC piece inspired by the Netflix show Beef, which turns into a genuinely useful conversation about deductibles, HSAs, max-out-of-pocket numbers, and when the high-deductible plan is actually the wrong choice. Every now and then, we get to be on the other side of the mic. This week, we're sharing a conversation we had as guests on Baiba Wisse's show, Live In Technicolor, and it turned into one of the more personal conversations we've had in a while.Baiba asked us the questions we don't always get to sit with on our own show. How did this all start? What was really going on behind the scenes? What do Will and Karen actually believe about why we're here? So that's what this one is. The origin story, the messy parts included. In this episode, we get into:How a full-on existential crisis during the pandemic cracked Will open and why he's grateful it didThe moment Will and Karen almost shut the whole show down, and what changed their mindsWhy "programming" isn't just a metaphor.... how culture, family, and experience build the filters we see everything throughWhat it actually means to create your own reality, and the one thing that was blocking Will from experiencing itWhere Will and Karen genuinely disagree on soul contracts, oneness, and the nature of the human experienceThe skeptic vs. believer dynamic that makes TSM work, and why both perspectives belong in the roomHow to find your footing when life is hitting hard, and why presence might be the only real answerThis one is for anyone who's ever wondered if the version of themselves they've been showing the world is actually who they are. Thanks to Baiba for the conversation and for allowing us to share it with our community. When someone is diagnosed with cancer, one of the first questions is simple: What happens next? But for many, that question doesn't come with a clear answer. Instead, it opens the door to something much harder to navigate—uncertainty. In this episode of NETWise, host Jessica Thomas explores what it means to live in that space of the unknown. From the shock of diagnosis to the ongoing reality of treatment decisions, scan results, and everything in between, uncertainty becomes a constant companion for many people living with neuroendocrine cancer.Through deeply personal stories and expert insight, this episode brings together the voices of patients, a caregiver, and a physician who is also a patient—each offering a different perspective on how to cope, adapt, and move forward without all the answers. You'll hear from:Jackie Dong, diagnosed at just 23, navigating recovery and redefining his outlook on lifeDr. Mark Lewis, oncologist and patient, sharing the limits of statistics and the reality of lived experienceJennifer Rogers Anderson, who found peace by letting go of the need to knowJessica Ochoa, confronting the hardest question—how much time do I have?Gary Murfin, emphasizing the importance of self-advocacy and informed decision-makingJamie Metzl, a caregiver whose search for knowledge became deeply personalTogether, their stories reveal a powerful truth: uncertainty doesn't just happen at diagnosis—it continues throughout the cancer journey. It shows up in treatment decisions, in waiting for scan results, in understanding the disease itself, and in imagining the future. But while uncertainty may not go away, the way we relate to it can change. This episode explores:The emotional impact of a cancer diagnosis and the shock that followsWhy statistics and percentages don't always translate to individual experienceThe balance between seeking information and avoiding overwhelmThe reality of “scan-xiety” and living between resultsHow routines, movement, and mindset can create stabilityThe importance of self-advocacy and trusted informationWhat it means to not just survive—but thrive—within uncertaintyAt its core, this conversation is about learning how to live alongside uncertainty—not by eliminating it, but by finding ways to stay grounded, present, and connected to what matters most.Because while the future may not always be clear… the way we show up for each day still is. In this solo reflection, Amy explores why daily practice matters beyond flexibility, strength, or stress relief. Using a simple morning ritual—cleaning her glasses—she offers a clear metaphor for what practice does: it helps us notice what has accumulated in the mind-body system and gives us a way to “wipe the lens” so we can see, sense, and choose more clearly. This episode weaves yogic psychology, behavior change, and neuroscience into one steady message: our beliefs don't just shape our thoughts—they shape our bodies, our felt sense, and our default responses. The work of change is possible, but it asks for time, repetition, and a compassionate willingness to witness what's already wired. In this episode, Amy exploresWhy daily practice functions like “cleaning the lens” of perceptionHow repetitive beliefs shape behavior, communication, and lived experienceThe neuroscience of habit loops: “neurons that fire together wire together”Why beliefs become embodied—and how sensations can become predictable over timeHow yoga therapy supports change from both directions: top-down and bottom-upThe importance of cultivating the observer before trying to rewire patternsHow mantra, mudrā, saṅkalpa, and visualization can interrupt old loops and build new onesWhy meaningful rewiring often takes years, not weeksHow the ego can resist change when long-held patterns feel “cement-like”Why dramatic life changes don't always create transformation if beliefs remain unchangedHow yoga therapy stays self-empowered while still benefiting from skilled guidanceA woven framework: Rāja Yoga (mind), Haṭha Yoga (body), and a mature, non-bypassing view of VedāntaA thoughtful comparison between Vedānta and The Matrix as a metaphor for misperception and awakeningKey takeawaysChange begins with awareness: noticing the loop without immediately obeying it.The body and mind are trained together; sustainable change includes both sensation and belief.Practice is not about perfection—it's about repetition with clarity.External reinvention can create space, but real change comes from rewiring the underlying beliefs.A mature spiritual framework supports healing without bypassing what is real and human.Reflection question for listenersWhat is one familiar “loop” you notice in your mind-body system—and what might it feel like to pause, witness it, and choose a new response today?Mentioned in this episodeDaily practice as a method of “cleaning the lens”Behavior change and learning theoryRāja Yoga and the Yoga Sūtra as a practical path for health, healing, and liberationHaṭha Yoga as a pathway back into sensation and embodimentAdvaita Vedānta and the movement from perceived separateness toward wholenessThe role of a yoga therapist or guide in supporting insight without bypassing
Attention is not just about being seen. It's about being known. The people closest to us are close because they notice us. They pay attention to our needs, our moods, our patterns. Giving our attention says: This matters to me. And when that's missing, it can shape how we show up in relationships—whether that looks like avoiding needs altogether or longing to be noticed without knowing how to ask.In this episode, Caitlin explores something many of us quietly wrestle with: our very human need for attention. They also introduce us to a psychological concept called the Spotlight Effect, which explains why we tend to overestimate how much people notice us. This conversation reframes attention not as something shameful, but as something we need to feel seen, held, and understood.“We are shaped and molded by people around us. But at the end of the day, like we have to know ourselves and we have to know how to take care of ourselves. So like your world should include other people, but it cannot revolve around other people because then you are losing yourself."What We Explore in This EpisodeWhy needing attention is a fundamental human experienceThe difference between healthy attention and shame-based narrativesHow trauma can push us to center others and abandon ourselvesBecoming the center of your own world (without losing connection)The “spotlight effect” and why people notice you less than you thinkReframing attention as intimacy, care, and mutual recognition

In this episode, cohosts Laurel Holland and Laurel Boivin explore why living in alignment is more complex, and more transformative, than it initially appears. They unpack the internal systems that must come into alignment (values, beliefs, behaviors, and identity), and how misalignment often shows up as resistance, control, or feeling stuck. Through personal stories and coaching insights, they illustrate how conditioning, self-worth, and unconscious beliefs can quietly shape our choices. Ultimately, this conversation invites listeners to approach alignment as an ongoing, evolving practice—one rooted in self-honesty, curiosity, and the courage to live in deeper truth. In This EpisodeWhy alignment often feels harder than expectedSigns you may be living out of alignmentHow values and beliefs shape your experienceThe role of conditioning in keeping you stuckWhy self-worth impacts what you allow in your lifeUsing values as a filter for decisionsJournaling prompts are suggested to further your exploration. Where in my life does things feel forced, resistant, or out of flow? What do I say I want—and am I truly acting in alignment with that? What beliefs might be underneath the places I feel stuck?Which of my values are currently being honored… and which are not? What conditioning or old patterns might I be ready to release?Host/Cohost/Guest InfoGuiding others to become effective leaders of their own lives, Laurel Holland has been on a journey of awakening and transformation throughout her life. "Wait until you're at $3-5M before hiring an SDR" — Ray heard this from an attendee at a Dallas event who'd been given the rule by an EOS-type advisor. His problem with it: that rule treats the SDR as an expense you need to afford, not a revenue multiplier that helps you generate the money in the first place. "I can't afford to make more money until I've made a certain amount of money" doesn't hold up. At MSP Sales Partners, Ray's first two hires were SDRs — because when you're starting a business and need to drive demand, you hire the person who creates revenue, not wait until revenue shows up on its own.The bigger lesson goes beyond SDRs. Business isn't paint-by-numbers, and most "rules" are just someone projecting their personal experience onto every business. Whether to hire — and when — depends on your demand, your constraints, and what role actually multiplies output at your stage. What You'll Learn in This Episode:Why the $3-5M SDR rule treats a revenue multiplier like a fixed expense — and why that logic breaks downHow Ray's first two hires at MSP Sales Partners were SDRs, and what he learned when organic demand changed the equationWhy most business "rules" are overgeneralizations built on one person's experienceThe real question to ask before hiring an SDR: what's the core constraint in your business right now?//Welcome to The Ray J. In this episode, Daniel and Luis kick things off by catching up on the week, diving into everything from travel stories and scorching Arizona heat to the return of baseball season and the excitement (and gambling temptation) that comes with it. But as always, things quickly shift into deeper—and funnier—territory. One of the standout conversations revolves around online communities, specifically the chaos of group pages where breaking news turns into spam, repeated posts, and nonstop drama. The guys unpack the frustration of seeing the same headlines posted over and over again and question why people chase attention instead of contributing meaningfully to the conversation. It's a hilarious rant, but also one that hits close to home if you've ever been part of an online community. From there, the discussion turns into something surprisingly real: the impact of politics on everyday interactions. Whether it's social media arguments or awkward real-life encounters (like being stuck in line while strangers argue politics), the episode explores how divisive conversations can creep into places they don't belong—and why sometimes it's better to just not engage at all.But it's not all frustration—there's a strong theme of connection throughout the episode. The guys reflect on how Covino & Rich has brought people together over the years, leading to real friendships that would have never existed otherwise. It's a reminder of how powerful shared interests can be in building community, even in a world full of division. The episode also dives into lighter, classic After Show topics like:Whether bringing friends on vacation actually ruins the experienceThe psychology behind “finding your people”Celebrity culture and viral headlines you didn't even know existedAnd a hilarious debate about Shaggy impressions (yes, seriously)Toward the end, things get nostalgic as the conversation shifts to celebrity crushes and how early influences shape attraction and taste. It's funny, relatable, and guaranteed to spark your own memories. At its core, this episode is about balancing chaos and connection—online, in real life, and within yourself. Whether you're here for the laughs, the takes, or the community vibe, Episode 332 delivers.
