Welcome to Open Form, a new weekly film podcast hosted by award-winning writer Mychal Denzel Smith. Each week, a different author chooses a movie: a movie they love, a movie they hate, a movie they hate to love. Something nostalgic from their childhood. A brand-new obsession. Something they've been dying to talk about for ages and their friends are constantly annoyed by them bringing it up. On this week's episode, Mychal talks to R.O. Kwon about the 2020 film Minari, directed by Lee Isaac Chung and starring Steven Yeun, Yuh-Jung Youn, Yeri Han, Alan S. Kim, and Noel Cho. Learn more about your ad choices. From the Vox Quick Hits archive (Feb. 19, 2021): Vox film critic Alissa Wilkinson and critic-at-large Emily VanDerWerff recommend Minari. Minari is the story of Korean immigrants Jacob (Steven Yeun) and Monica (Yeri Han) who move their two small children (Noel Kate Cho and Alan S. Kim) from California to Arkansas in pursuit of Jacob's dream of farming. But Jacob and Monica's marriage is on the rocks, a circumstance that doesn't improve the way they hoped it would when Monica's mother (Yuh Jung Youn) comes to stay with them. Written and directed by Lee Isaac Chung (Munyurangabo, Lucky Life) and set in the 1980s Ozarks, Minari feels deeply personal. It's both a family drama seen through the eyes of a Korean American boy and a moving tale of love and loss in the American heartland, exquisitely told. Read Alissa's review of Minari here. Between Yuh-jung Youn in "Minari" and Glenn in "Hillbilly Elegy," we're getting so much Big Grandma Energy this Oscar season. While "Minari" and its male stars Steven Yuen and Alan S. Kim are getting lots of recognition, to say nothing of Youn's much-deserved nomination, we have equal praise for Yeri Han as Monica. We also find some surprising similarities to "Little Miss Sunshine," queen out on the multiple brief but powerful face journeys in this movie, swoon over the score, and break down the best bits of that rooftop parking lot scene before Nick makes a shocking revelation about his feelings on a certain nominee this year who shall not be named... *Lizzo voice* "I been waiting for this one, turn it up!" This week we're diving into arguably our most-anticipated film of the year - Isaac Lee Chung's beautiful "Minari." The semi-autobiographical piece follows a Korean American family as they create a new life for themselves in Arkansas. The father, Jacob, is determined to create the American dream for his family through his farm, but his wife, Monica, is skeptical. While the parents are at work, the children, Anne and David, spend time with their eccentric Grandma and grapple with balancing their Korean and American identities. The film was relegated to only the Foreign Film category at the Golden Globes, sparking a very important discussion about what really makes an "American" movie. ❤️ We love you Alan S. Kim! If you missed the Globes, catch up in just 15 minutes with our BONUS Golden Globes special!
