Wallis Simpson went from being an American socialite to Duchess of Windsor. What a journey! She was born into money and lived a life of jet-setting around the same time planes were invented. Wallis stirred up plenty of controversy and gossip, especially in her romantic endeavors. Her last name comes from her second marriage, but her third marriage is the one that solidified her as part of the British Monarchy. Lots of cheating, lies and drama in this biography. A little piece of her history is even showcased in Season 5 of The Crown on Netflix. I speak with historian Tobias Harper about about the evolving and growing role of the British crown as the head of the voluntary sector in a neoliberal, atomizing, and celebrity-driven society. We examine both the "magic of the royal touch" and the hard-nosed bureaucratic calculations that it can serve to obscure, as captured in Toby's book, "From Servants of the Empire to Everyday Heroes: The British Honours System in the Twentieth Century." Recent years have seen a flurry of historical dramas and documentaries surrounding the modern monarchy, with historians and commentators debating whether or not they offer a fair depiction of the royal family – and whether or not it matters. But, how do scholars go about researching the full story of what happened during the Queen's long reign? In conversation with Matt Elton, Professor Philip Murphy offers his views on why telling the recent history of Britain's monarchy is so complicated. Hosted on Acast. Empress Sisi of Austria had a turbulent life from the time she was 15 until she passed away at age 60. She's been compared to the likes of Princess Diana due to her love for the people of Hungary and how she was so unfairly treated by the monachry. She suffered from depression, eating disorders, and addiction, but that didn't stop her from bringing Austria and Hungary together to form the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Dual Monarchy. She was obsessed with looks, so much so that she didn't allow any photographs of her face once she was in her 30s. Her children, her freedom, and her life were all taken from her. Bruce and Chantal with their take on this week's hearings at the Commission of Inquiry into the use of the Emergencies Act; how to fight inflation, the nuclear rebound, the monarchy in Canada and Elon Musk. A busy, busy lineup!
Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Learn more about your ad choices. For many in the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth was synonymous with the monarchy. As she's laid to rest, King Charles faces a potentially "existential" challenge in convincing the British and global public that the monarchy is a force for good, according to historian Dan Jones. That may be a difficult task in the Commonwealth, a group of 56 countries connected in part by a history of British colonial rule. Many see the monarchy as inextricably linked to the injustices of that colonial system. Jones talks to NPR's Rachel Martin about the Queen's legacy and the shoes Charles must now fill.Jamaican member of Parliament Lisa Hanna explains why she believes the monarchy is at a crossroads and must use this moment to correct historical wrongs committed by the British Empire against people of the Caribbean. In participating regions, you'll also hear a local news segment to help you make sense of what's going on in your community.Email us at email@example.com.
