Bong Joon Ho (Snowpiercer, The Host) returns from his Oscar triumph five years ago with his first directorial effort since his worldwide smash Parasite, which remains the ONLY foreign language film to ever win the Oscar for Best Picture. This time around, he's directing a high concept sci-fi comedy adventure taking place in the future focusing on Mickey (Robert Pattinson) who works as an "Expendable" for a growing organization looking to colonize a snowy desolate planet. His job entails being used as a tester of various hostile environments, new viruses, potential vaccines, and any number of deadly situations which can occur on said planet. The key to his survival is that he doesn't survive most of these ordeals....they have the technology to simply clone him again to restart the process. :o And hilarity ensues! Also among this stacked cast are Naomi Ackie, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Steven Yuen. For Mickey, it's time to find out if the 17th time's the Charm. ;) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
FROM MONKEY TO……MICKEY! NEW EPISODE PRINTED! Innovative visualist, Oscar winning Korean director Bong Joon Ho roars back with the new sci-fi satire Mickey 17, starring the glittery vampire OR Batman (depending on who you talk to) Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie (another WS+ notch for her), Steven Yuen, Mark Ruffalo, and Toni Collette. Fresh off the out of the box Oscar sweep for the film Parasite, Bong's resume swings back to some of the sci fi narrative and themes tread in his other films (The Host, Snowpiercer, Okja, anyone?). BUT does this allegorical genre mashup stick the landing or does Bong's crock pot overflow with too many ingredients? Listen as the Boys hash this out in a way that pays homage to the film's re-print theme (and for whatever reasons, Cupcake ends up shilling and defending not one, but TWO Reese Witherspoon films in the process). GET US IN YOUR EARS!!!!For pluses, Jose talks up a pioneering re-invention of a hygiene drug store staple while Mike reviews a film (Editor's note: Oh not another documentary?) that has more in common with Mickey 17 than just one of its actors.#podcast #newpodcast #movie #moviereview #moviereviewpodcast #film #filmisnotdead #cinematography #filmcritic #Mickey17 #bongjoonho #robertpattinson #naomiackie, #stevenyuen #markruffalo #tonicollete #timkey #patsyferran #cameronbritton #dariuskhondji #jungjaeil #bradpitt #warnerbros #planbentertainment #Offscreen #katestreetpicturecompanyTIMESTAMPS00:00:00 New Chapter00:00:59 INTRO00:03:23 Mickey 17: Below the Line00:11:53 Mickey 17: A Deep cast00:32:58 Spoiler Free Thoughts00:51:34 SPOILERS AHEAD01:13:07 Jose's Plus01:16:25 Mike's Plus01:25:11 Outro- - - - - - - - - -WE ARE WATCH SKIP PLUS! We review the sci-fi comedy starring Robert Pattinson, Naomie Ackie, and Steven Yuen
We're covering a semi-recent film for the first time in ages with the slice-of-life drama 'Minari', a film that was one of the rare highlights from a year that brought us a global pandemic. We drink the white man's golden elixir (Miller Lite) as we dive deep into the films portrayal of an immigrant family going for the American Dream, adapting to a midwest lifestyle, and the various problems that threaten their harmonious dynamic. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, whose follow up to this small and emotionally delicate film was the recent Twister soft-reboot (?), and stars Steven Yuen, a man given the chance to escape his Walking Dead fame and never look back - Minari has us reaching for the nearest Kleenex, and contemplating our religion.

There's been a flurry of casting news surrounding Marvel Studios movie Thunderbolts this week. Top Gun: Maverick and Lessons in Chemistry star Lewis Pullman has an offer to replace Steven Yuen as Sentry after Yuen exited the project due to scheduling issues. Additionally, Geraldine Viswanathan is set to join the film replacing Ayo Edebiri, who is also departing the project due to her schedule. It is also said that audiences can expect to see Rachel Weisz and Laurence Fishbourne in the project portraying their respective MCU characters Melina Vostokoff and Bill Foster. Our pal James Gunn didn't leave us hanging this week with his announcement that Milly Alcock was cast as Supergirl. Alcock is best known for playing young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen on HBO's House of the Dragon, part of the Game of Thrones universe. The Last of Us has secured their directing talent for season two and it's chock-full of award winners. Mark Mylod, who just won an Emmy for his work on the final season of HBO's Succession; Kate Herron, who directed the first season of the Marvel Studios series Loki; Stephen Williams, nominated for an Emmy for directing on HBO's Watchmen; and Nina Lopez-Corrado, nominated for an Imagen award for directing on season two of HBO's Perry Mason. Will Mom and Dad ever stop fighting? And by Mom and Dad of course we mean…Marvel and Sony. The studio giants are reportedly unable to see eye-to-eye about the direction Tom Holland's Spider-Man should go in a fourth Spider-man film. Sony is understandably trying to boost their Sonyverse with a crossover event that would include Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Men, but Marvel sees things differently. Marvel desires that Holland's Spider-Man continues with a more grounded approach that is intuitive to the character. Multiple Spider-Man appearances were scrapped from the upcoming Madame Web movie that Sony is putting out. Christopher Nolan's film Tenet will be rereleased in IMAX theaters from February 23 to March 1. The first trailer for the upcoming remake of the 1989 classic film Road House starring Jake Gyllenhaal has been released. The film will debut on March 21. Tom Hollander, a British actor known for performances in Pride & Prejudice, the Pirates of the Caribbean films, The White Lotus, and The Night Manager, spoke on a recent appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers about a time he was mistakenly sent a box office bonus check meant for Tom Holland for his appearance in Avengers films. Hollander said "“It was an astonishing amount of money. It was not his salary. It was his first box-office bonus. Not the whole box-office bonus, the first one. And it was more money than I'd ever [seen]. It was a seven-figure sum.” A four-issue limited comic series called Darth Vader - Black White & Red will be on sale starting April 25. Colman Domingo will be starring as the legendary singer Nat King Cole in a movie musical from a script he co-wrote, Variety learned exclusively. He will also be making his feature directing debut on the project. After a year-long search for Trevor Noah's replacement on The Daily Show, former longtime host Jon Stewart has agreed to return to host the program. Stewart will appear weekly throughout the 2024 US Presidential election. While speaking to ComicBook.com about her Paramount+ series Special Ops: Lioness, Zoe Saldana said she would be willing to play more superhero roles as long as they didn't require the extensive makeup process used to create her MCU character of Gamora. "If it never gets to happen, or if it happens with other filmmakers, and not James Gunn, or if it happens again with James Gunn, I would be so grateful." Later this year, Marvel Comics will apply their What If...? concept to the Alien franchise. A five-issue run will be released, following the character Carter Burke and what happened after.

#CountdownToHellbound is continuing with two fantastic movies starring the brilliant actor Yoo Ah-in. Firstly, the 2018 atmospheric thriller Burning, which co-stars Jeon Jong-seo and Steven Yuen and is based on a Haruki Murakami short. Then, the 2020 crime caper family drama genre mash-up Voice of Silence, where YAI delivers a gobsmackingly vivid, empathetic and engaging performance without ever saying a word. The K-botak Podcast is a short podcast published twice a week, where I review Korean films and television series or K-dramas. There is an episode about a film or films every Monday, and about a TV series every Thursday - either with a dedicated full season review or the K-drama catch-up where I review partially watched or ongoing series.Join the conversation on Twitter, be part of the K-botak community and discuss your favourite shows, movies, actors and more: https://twitter.com/kbotakpodFollow K-botak on Buzzsprout at https://kbotak.buzzsprout.com/ , and catch the show on Spotify, Apple, Google and most places you get podcasts.
Best Adapted Podcast heads down South. Korea, that is, by way of Mississippi. In Burning, Korean auteur Lee Chang Dong channels the despair and apocalyptic rage of William Faulkner and Haruki Murakami to explore masculine insecurity and economic inequality in contemporary Seoul. But how well does this film translate and build on these celebrated writers' works? Joined by musician Mitch Peterson (slowya.roll) Caleb and Frank wax poetic on arson, Miles Davis, and the incredible performance of Steven Yuen. Let's kick things off right here on campus. For all my arts-n-culture lovin' listeners out there, the I. G. Greer Cinema is back up and running, courtesy of our friends at the Appalachian Popular Programming Society. This week's showing is Minari, the Best Picture-nominated family drama starring Academy Award nominee Steven Yuen and Academy Award winner Youn Yuh-jung. The film chronicles a Korean-American family's struggles trying to bring their version of the American Dream to life in 1980s rural Arkansas. It's funny, captivating, and heartbreaking. Trust me, farming's never been more riveting. Minari is playing September 2nd through the 4th at 7 and 9:30pm, admission is $2 at the door. You should all go check it out! Next, some local Boone news. We Mountaineers are all big fans of the Belk Library, but did you know that Boone is also home to its very own public library? According to the Watauga Democrat, the Appalachian Regional Library located at 140 Queen Street has just been awarded a grant for $25,000 dollars! That money will be used to purchase a new camera and speaker system for the Library's conference room, two new printers, a copier, and a fax, as well as four laptops that are available for public use with a library card. If any of you Boone residents have been on the hunt for a good book, why not take a stroll up Queen Street and check the ARL out? On the national level, a word about national programming. Following long-time host Alex Trebek's passing last Fall, the popular trivia game show Jeopardy! has been on the hunt for a replacement. According to NPR, they'd found one...and then fired him! Mike Richards, a former executive producer for Jeopardy, was released from his role as the new host following The Ringer's discovery of controversial commentary he'd made in a previous job as a podcast host. Who will the next host be? We don't know yet, but I'll take “Pick One Soon!” for $200 please, Alex. Finally, from Boone Weather DOT COM, the weather forecast for the rest of this week. After some heavy rainfall courtesy of Tropical Depression Ida, this weekend is looking beautiful just in time for Labor Day, with sunny, sunny skies and highs of 76 degrees through this Saturday.

Lisa Hanawalt is a writer, cartoonist, and author of four brilliant books, including "Hot Dog Taste Test" and "My Dirty Dumb Eyes." You may be familiar with her work on the popular animated Netflix series "BoJack Horseman" where she was a producer. Hanawalt is also the creator of the animated series "Tuca & Bertie" which stars Tiffany Haddish, Ali Wong, and Steven Yuen. The show will be starting its second season in June on Adult Swim. In 2019, we talked with Lisa about how intuitive creating "Tuca & Bertie" was at times, on deciding what to ground in reality and where to take flight, and why she should be allowed to ride Martha Stewart's pony.

Disclaimer: this is NOT a sponsored episode! We were so excited to have the opportunity to attend an advance screening of the breathtaking film, Minari. Minari is a movie written and directed by Lee Isaac Chung and starring Steven Yuen, Han Ye-Ri, Young Yuh-jung, Alan S. Kim, Noel Cho and Will Patton. It's a film that centres around a Korean immigrant family chasing the American dream. Throughout Minari are elements of family, perseverance and strength. Ian welcomes back Aaron Christensen for another look at Awards Season films that they've finally caught up with--and which are either now available to watch or are coming soon to a theatre/streaming service near you! This time, they give some real breathing room to analyzing three powerful movies.First up is the stirring immigrant drama, Minari, starring Steven Yuen. A Korean family moves to Arkansas in the 1980s to find the American dream--but success comes at the cost of the bonds that keep them together. Then they spend One Night in Miami with Regina King's adaptation of a Kemp Powers play that finds Malcom X, Jim Brown, Muhammad Ali, and Sam Cooke debating issues of race and culture in 1964.Lastly, the guys end with a debate of their own, centered on the sexual politics of Promising Young Woman. Emerald Fennell's inventive revenge fantasy stars Carey Mulligan as a woman whose quest to foil nightclub predators takes a chilling turn when past trauma manifests in present day.Time Stamps:Intro: 0:00 - 4:30Minari Discussion: 4:30 - 17:12One Night in Miami Discussion: 17:13 - 35:43Promising Young Woman Discussion: 35:44 - 1:04:48Outro: 1:04:49 - 1:07:25Show Links:Watch the Minari trailer (In theatres February 12th; coming to VOD on 2/26).Watch the One Night in Miami trailer (Now streaming on Amazon Prime).Watch the Promising Young Woman trailer (Now in theatres and On Demand).Keep up with all of Aaron's reviews at Horror 101 with Dr. AC. The Fandom Files is joined by William Yu, an activist and screenwriter who started the mega-viral movements #StarringJohnCho and #SeeAsAMStar! Fed up with Hollywood's long tradition of overlooking Asian-American actors, Yu started photoshopping John Cho's face on blockbuster movie posters, confronting audiences with their own biases and forcing people to acknowledge the viability of Asian-American actors in leading roles. Two years later, using AI and deepfake technology, he placed Asian-American actors' faces in pivotal scenes from major studio movies, once again challenging our ingrained prejudice. Yu talks to The Fandom Files about his campaigns, making the deepfakes, and how they've changed his own life. All this and more in this episode of The Fandom Files! It’s time to get back to work, scaredy cats. Today we’re watching Joe Lynch’s manic 2017 bloodbath: MAYHEM. We get the ball rolling with a chat about Walking Dead spoilers, misleading horror movie titles, and Dave’s Boys. Chris tells us about Shudder’s horror talk show The Core, and Dave talks about watching the fan-recommended flick THE DEVIL’S PASS. We talk about rage virus/ indulgently violent/ office-building movies like THE BELKO EXPERIMENT, MOM AND DAD, and THE PURGE. We discuss Steven Yuen, a lack of guns, pepper spray, TROLLHUNTER, nail guns, quality blood, and even have some traumatic flashbacks about THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES. It’s a gory good time on this unhinged episode of the TEXCHRIS DAVESAW MASSACRE! Continue reading →

Jimmy joined the roundtables for the hit AMC show THE WALKING DEAD while at Comic Con. You'll hear from Michael Cudlitz, Danai Gurui, Sonequa Martin-Green, Lennie James, Andrew Lincoln, Melissa McBride, Greg Nicotero, Norman Reedus, Chandler Riggs, Steven Yuen, Scott Gimple (Showrunner), Gale Ann Hurd (Producer), David Alpert (Producer). The CNI mic is pointed directly at the talent so you'll hear them the best (and that's more important!) so apologies if the media questions are a bit muddled. I had a little fun with some questioning and you'll hear showrunner Gimple jokingly call me out on it! Reedus and Jimmy had a laugh afterwards when Jimmy reminded Reedus of the promise he made to me to throw in a Boondock Saints easter egg. But instead, they thought a Chewbacca roar might be better. Some great hints on the upcoming season! Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love! Thanks for listening!
