During the past 30 years there's been a growing list of pop and rock musicians trying their hand at musical theater. And they range in style and scope from artists like Cindy Lauper, Dolly Parton, and Elton John to rock bands like The Who, Green Day, and The Go-Go's. Well, today's guest has been venturing into musical theater and is from a band you may not have heard of, but their name is certainly one you're not likely to forget: The Slants. Simon Tam, founder and bassist of the all-Asian rock band, has recently begun a transition from rock star to musical writer, and he shares why this new artistic endeavor is so important to him. But his path up till now has taken some surprising turns... We talk about the bullying he faced as a child just because he's Chinese. He gives the reasons why he and the band turned down not one but two million-dollar contracts. And then there's the famous eight-year trademark battle that ultimately landed him and the band's name at the Supreme Court. It's what has branded Simon as a Troublemaker -- a name he now wears as a badge of honor. Sometimes it involves physical attacks and intimidation or verbal attacks like what Simon had to deal with when he was young (name calling, teasing, and taunting). But it can also be indirect, such as spreading rumors or trying to make others reject someone. More recently, though, technology and social media have created a new venue for bullying that has expanded its reach. Cyberbullying happens online like YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat, where bullies can send hurtful, ongoing messages 24 hours a day. Adult bullying is a thing, too.  Preventing and stopping bullying involves a commitment to creating a safe environment where children can thrive, socially and academically, without being afraid. The same can be said of theaters, rehearsal rooms, on-set, and backstage as well and the importance of providing dependable, non-toxic conditions to do the best work possible. Studies done from the early 2000s found that 30 percent of Americans will be bullied over the course of their careers.      Audition Story The Slants took band membership very seriously, and Simon used to make candidates applying for my band fill out a 4 page questionnaire, then audition on stage in an empty venue while being filmed. Hey Beauty Bosses! Nalani and Ren here with another great episode. Thank you for allowing us to be in your ear buds once again. Today's episode was lots of fun to record, but serious at the same time. Growing up as a first generation Asian female, we have definitely had our shares of being teased and stereotyped in the worst way. We mainly wanted to educate the masses in hopes that you would be more open minded to navigate the world in a more considerate and respectful way…to judge less and love more. Hope you guys find this episode educational. Stay tune for another great thought provoking, but fun chat!

The bamboo ceiling is the construct that mitigates Asians from progressing to leadership positions within an organisation. Whilst Asians are able to see these leadership positions through the gaps of the metaphorical bamboo ceiling, they are unable to physically break through due to a combination of cultural, social & systematic factors that impede progress to the top.In this episode, we deep dive into the possible causes of the bamboo ceiling, our own experiences in the boardroom and how we can work together as Asian Australians to counteract this problem in our society. The month of May is AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) Heritage Month! In celebration of AAPI heritage month, I will be featuring powerful Asian voices in our community throughout this month! First up is ALICE, a Korean American R&B/Pop singer breaking stereotypes in the American music industry. Her goal is to help elevate the portrayal and views of Asians in America by being a powerful and vocal influence in the media. She's been interviewed with Teen Vogue, sang guide vocals for a YG entertainment artist, and won the CCM songwriting competition in South Korea. I first met ALICE in Boston when she was attending Berklee College of Music and she's one of the most confident people I know, but in this episode, she opens up about feeling limited and unwanted in the American music industry for being Asian, being bullied and dealing with racism growing up, and through it all, learning to find confidence and self-worth in who she is, and not on what other people say and think about her. This is a refreshing, powerful episode that would give a lot of inspiration for those with big dreams who want to break stereotypes! EP 21 Do Not Limit Your Dreams to Asian Stereotypes with ALICE QUESTIONS ASKED What was the transition like for you moving from Boston to LA to pursue your dream to be a singer? (7:39) What kind of influence and impact do you want to have on your fans/listeners? (1:14:52) If you were to write a letter to the millennials, what would you say? (1:18:50) YOU WILL LEARN How she began her personal journey to become a singer in LA. (7:44) How society affects people's confidence with unrealistic beauty standards. (36:50) The power of encouraging and speaking love into the younger generation. (42:03) All of us are meant to better the world with our purpose and our gifts. (51:33) Look at what you love and expand on it. (52:55) A new perspective on how personal pains can become our empowering backstories.
