In this episode of Queer Cinema Catchup, Joe and Allison discuss the 2025 remake of the 1993 film 'The Wedding Banquet'. Directed by Andrew Ahn, this modern reimagining brings a fresh perspective to the beloved 1993 film by Ang Lee, exploring themes of love, family expectations, cultural identity, and LGBTQ+ relationships. The hosts delve into the film's cast, including Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, Han Gi-chan, Joan Chen, and Youn Yuh-jung, and analyze their performances and character arcs. They also reflect on the film's ability to portray complex family dynamics and generational shifts in acceptance, while balancing humor and emotional depth. Joe shares insights from a talkback session with the director, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film and its personal significance. Tune in for a lively discussion on how this contemporary take honors the spirit of the original film while showcasing evolved cultural and societal attitudes towards queer experiences and family.00:00 Welcome to Queer Cinema Catchup00:11 Introducing 'The Wedding Banquet' (2025)00:47 Meet the Cast03:41 Film's Themes and Sundance Premiere04:06 Personal Reactions and Missed Scenes06:04 Plot Breakdown and Key Moments08:28 Character Arcs and Performances18:45 Director's Insights and Behind the Scenes32:56 Analyzing Min's Character34:11 Chris' Indecision 37:17 Lee's Desire for a Child44:16 Angela's Role and Relationships51:49 Comparing the Original and Remake55:56 Final Thoughts and Reflections Hosted on Acast. Jeff and Phil welcome back their old pals Rebecca Sun and Dino-Ray Ramos to talk about The Wedding Banquet, writer/director Andrew Ahn's contemporary re-envisioning of Ang Lee's 1993 beloved romantic comedy, starring Bowen Yang, Kelly Marie Tran, Lily Gladstone, and Han Gi-Chan. The big question: does this remake justify its existence? They discuss the film's fresh take on LGBTQ+ themes and family dynamics; some of the more questionable but necessary narrative turns; and why Joan Chen and Youn Yuh-jung are Asian American cinema royalty.

Alex reviews Andrew Ahn's 2025 adaptation of the 1993 film The Wedding Banquet, starring Lily Gladstone, Youn Yuh-jung, and Joan Chen (and many more). The film is about two queer couples who end up conspiring to marry one half of each couple in exchange for a green card and money for IVF treatments. Alex discusses the film's unexpected delights — including the wonderful, tender sound design and lovely blocking — and how the film thoughtfully updates (and even queers some more) Ang Lee's classic queer rom-com. **Stay updated on the best under-the-radar films that just might shift your perspective by joining the Seventh Row Newsletter: http://email.seventh-row.com **Want to join Alex and a group of movie lovers to watch and discuss a Queer African film in May 2025? [bs_show url="pachinko"]

In this special show, we review and perhaps dissect the recent Korean Film Nights screening of an old Korean movie starring [Oscar winner] Youn Yuh-jung and directed by the well-known Kim Ki-Young, and brought to us by the London Korean Film Festival and Korean Cultural Centre UK/London guys... the first of their 2022 treats! The film in question is “An Experience To Die For”, although we believe the film has also been known as “Angel, Become An Evil Woman” and/or, with both titles combined: “An Experience To Die For: Angel, Become An Evil Woman”. HAPPY NEW YEAR! PART 2 for 2022!As we released PART 1 of this special two-part and festive 'Kimchi and Film' themed 'NoSoKoPo' show only hours before Christmas Day itself, we thought it best to hold out until after the first week of 2022 before dropping PART 2 on our viewers & listeners, by which time Jay & Tim would have just settling back into 'the new normal', and perhaps our 'fans' would have too!In this second half - which starts immediately after PART 1's interview with artists (and 'kimchi pool' designers), The Decorators - Jay and Tim dedicate a large chunk of it to Korean films, a Korean-related film or two and indeed a Korean Christmas film which recently graced UK cinema screens. Movies covered and/or reviewed include two by Kim Jong-kwan, "Josée" and "Shades Of The Heart", as well as "Finding Angel", "Heaven - To The Land Of Happiness", "Spiritwalker", "Drive My Car", Justin Chon's "Blue Bayou", and d even a documentary about Oscar-winner Ms Youn Yuh-jung... Oh, and chit-chat about when Jay & Tim met a couple of Korean film directors recently, including Mr Im Sang-soo.From film talk we mix this with chat about Korean adoptees, coffee places in KoreaTown and indeed South Korea itself, an exhausting London Korean Film Festival in 2021, touch on Korean plastic surgery, the Sewol ferry [as we did in Part 1 briefly] and a tiny video snippet from a recent Sewol UK memorial in Korea-town itself, as well as John Kim's Kimchi song again and speak a little about North Koreans in New Malden yet again - a subject we will be covering more in Episode 18 or 19.Listen out for us touching again on new gift-box company, "Seoulbox" [an unboxing of which will also feature in Episode 18], the Third Window Films podcast and the prospect of Jay & Tim doing 'live' podcast sessions in New Malden itself.Lastly, you'll hear about how Jay took up far too much of a KOFICE's correspondent's time, but at the same time learnt so much about how she (Tayoni) helps others with the Korean language via her YouTube channel, in addition to Jay, and indeed Tim almost 'food-shopping' in the name of Korean TV channel, KBS!Further information about subjects covered in this episode can be found here:FILM INFO:"Finding Angel" - Thanks to @themediapioneers (Instagram)"Blue Bayou" - @BlueBayouFilm (Instagram) & @JustinChon (Instagram - director)"Drive My Car - @drivemycar_mv (Instagram)"Heaven - To The Land Of Happiness", "Spiritwalker""Josée" and "Shades Of The Heart" - @monologue707 (dir. Let's kick things off right here on campus. For all my arts-n-culture lovin' listeners out there, the I. G. Greer Cinema is back up and running, courtesy of our friends at the Appalachian Popular Programming Society. This week's showing is Minari, the Best Picture-nominated family drama starring Academy Award nominee Steven Yuen and Academy Award winner Youn Yuh-jung. The film chronicles a Korean-American family's struggles trying to bring their version of the American Dream to life in 1980s rural Arkansas. It's funny, captivating, and heartbreaking. Trust me, farming's never been more riveting. Minari is playing September 2nd through the 4th at 7 and 9:30pm, admission is $2 at the door. You should all go check it out! Next, some local Boone news. We Mountaineers are all big fans of the Belk Library, but did you know that Boone is also home to its very own public library? According to the Watauga Democrat, the Appalachian Regional Library located at 140 Queen Street has just been awarded a grant for $25,000 dollars! That money will be used to purchase a new camera and speaker system for the Library's conference room, two new printers, a copier, and a fax, as well as four laptops that are available for public use with a library card. If any of you Boone residents have been on the hunt for a good book, why not take a stroll up Queen Street and check the ARL out? On the national level, a word about national programming. Following long-time host Alex Trebek's passing last Fall, the popular trivia game show Jeopardy! has been on the hunt for a replacement. According to NPR, they'd found one...and then fired him! Mike Richards, a former executive producer for Jeopardy, was released from his role as the new host following The Ringer's discovery of controversial commentary he'd made in a previous job as a podcast host. Who will the next host be? We don't know yet, but I'll take “Pick One Soon!” for $200 please, Alex. Finally, from Boone Weather DOT COM, the weather forecast for the rest of this week. After some heavy rainfall courtesy of Tropical Depression Ida, this weekend is looking beautiful just in time for Labor Day, with sunny, sunny skies and highs of 76 degrees through this Saturday.

We want to feature these 6 women below because they were hidden in society; they were going about their lives, each with their dreams, families, friends, struggles, and more. #36 - Emile Mosseri - Minari

Nieuwe Filmmuziek Op 4

Minari Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Sony) - Intro 1'38” - Grandma picked a good spot 3'30” - Halmeoni 1'23” - Oklahoma City 1'08” - Big Country 2'16” - Rain Song 2'12” - Minari Suite 3'48” - Find it every time 2'03”

After a brief hiatus in April, Jezzie and Sigi are reunited in the virtual Halo Halo Podcast studios playing pop culture catch up and sharing their takeaways from the 2021 Oscars. From an intimate and anti-climatic black tie affair, the guys marvel over the big wins made by Chloe Zhao, H.E.R. and Youn Yuh-jung. Sigi then notices that representation is popping up in his pop culture from Shanti Dope in the "Falcon and Winter Soldier" soundtrack; Olivia Rodrigo's "Deja Vu" and Silk Sonic's Leave the Door Open being on repeat for him and his daughter Delaney; and the unveiling of the "Shang Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings" Trailer on Simu Liu's birthday. Jezzie links the representations in Disney cultural properties. He shares that Disney has made efforts to shift towards the idea of belonging as an expression of diversity and inclusions. Most recently, "Raya and The Last Dragon" showcased a true narrative about Asian panethnicity and the double competing message of how being Asian is not a monolithic experience, while cooperation can be. Later Jezzie talks about “Jackpot Mentality” in the Philippine culture and observes there is a  focus on how hope is the key to financial security or financial planning.
