Fishes of the pod pond; I have not been casting my pod-reel and for that, I apologize - but I've been extremely busy (like a buzzing pollenating bee in a hive of wild music/dad life activity) - so I hope you've been alright with the unannounced hiatus, but just like that - Graventown is back bbz. Today on the podcast, I was very lucky to snag a few golden minutes from a jewel of a human who is always shining and glimmering in many different musical directions; Craig Smith. Craig is a Collingwood, Ontario songwriter in the great folk rock band called Ontarians but he is also a sound engineer, producer, multi instrumentalist, father, renaissance man and just an all around swell fella. He and I became fast pals when he was the entertainment coordinator of a magical spot in Collingwood called Crow Bar and Variety. He had me back quite a few times to take that lovely stage with my band, and a friendship sparked. He and his partner Ariana Dalie are the main lynchpins and curators for a brand new festival called Four Winds Music Festival (in Durham, Ontario on the lovely Riverstone Eco Retreat grounds) and it's all happening July 14-16. I am playing at the festival with my full five alarm band along with some amazing superstar and up and comer acts like Sarah Harmer, Danny Michel, Elliott Brood, Julian Taylor, Queen M, Mountain Head, Jolie Smith, Alysha Brilla and so many more. We had one heck of a lovely chat. For more info about Four Winds, head to the website for tickets and showtimes and I truly am "stoke-level-zebra" to see any and all Graventowners there. Catch me in a town near you by visting my website to see where I'm playing. If people can hate for no reason, I can love for no reason - and I love you. Thanks for stopping by Graventown. Yer always welcome here. As a full time independent artist, you can support me by joining my SUPER RAD subscription service at https://ko-fi.com/gravencanada

Join Lana Winterhalt for an incredible chat with 3x Juno nominated artist/producer/composer Alysha Brilla. Based out of her home studio in Ontario, Alysha fuses together worlds of music as diverse as her own heritage; born to an Indo/Tanzanian Father and European-Settler Mother, Alysha blends traditional instruments with folk guitar in a way that communicates peace and a deep understanding of the nature around her. Tune in as we chat about Alysha's upcoming record (releasing this July, 2022!), her creative journey, and what it all means to her.
Alysha Brilla is a 3X Juno Award nominated artist & music producer who’s been singing since she was 3 years old. She describes how music has been therapy & comfort for her throughout her life, her experience as a young teen with the sometimes predatory & exploitative nature of the music business, and how she cares less whether people “get her” as she gets older. She also shares her profound conviction that music does have the capacity to change the world and explains how she encourages students at her workshops to notice the interconnectedness of seemingly disparate things in our world. “Even though we give courses certain titles and we segment fields of study … everything truly is connected. If they’re studying audio engineering, it’s gonna relate back to childhood. Things DO connect. You can find highways between them. The way my brain works and when I was a kid and when I’m learning something … let’s say I’m learning something about audio engineering, I’ll think, ‘Oh, that’s just like an ocean wave.’ And as a kid, y’know, kids always say that all the time: ‘Is that like this?’ I love when people acknowledge and affirm the connections that their brains are making between things. So it’s not just me teaching the software or the techniques that I am able to share information on, it’s [that] I want to encourage them to just keep learning, be curious, and enjoy the process of learning.” --- SUPPORT THIS PODCAST: https://bit.ly/aswKO-FI---ALYSHA BRILLA WEB: https://www.alyshabrilla.com IG: https://www.instagram.com/alyshabrilla “LOVE": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmHexuN1-S4 “CENTRE”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=694nz3Ogkuw MUSIC - SPOTIFY PLAYLIST: https://spoti.fi/34fecxE--- AND SOMETIMES ... "Let's walk with empathy. We're all born with something; we all have to face some struggle...understanding that. We have to journey down something and it's not always going to be peachy. I am very grateful for my upbringing...instead of getting caught up with labels and identifications, just keep with who you are." - Zaynab Wilson Zaynab Wilson is a Canadian-Trinidadian globe-trotting multi-instrumentalist, who openly embraces her creative and personal expansion through her dynamic style and passionate expression. Songwriters Guild Live is a weekly radioshow in Amsterdam, focussed on artists who write their own songs. This week your host was Ro Halfhide. A Montréal-born Trinidadian-Canadian, Zaynab comes to the music scene with a wealth of cultural and musical diversity. Her recent Live EP (2018), is the debut to her career as a fronting singer-songwriter where she draws musical and rhythmic inspiration from her Caribbean roots and merges with folk, her heart and soul. Her voice is sweet, unaffected and naturally blended, and carries a strong sense of rhythm. Zaynab grew up in a large family of musicians, specializing on Steelpan, and got an early start to the life of an artist. Being the youngest of the lot of six children, the formula was already set by the time she was six. Zaynab was performing throughout Eastern Canada with her family, the "Von-Trapps of Steelpan", and gaining invaluable life lessons. Now, in addition to steelpan, Zaynab has grown into a sensitive, dynamic and well-rounded musician and is an equally talented percussionist, vocalist, songwriter and drummer, holding a drum-major degree from Humber College. Over the years, Zaynab has had the opportunity to perform with a variety of local and international artists including Alysha Brilla, Jason Wilson, Martin Carthy, Dave Swarbrick and Pee Wee Ellis, and performing at notable festivals including Woodford Folk Festival (Australia), Hillside Festival (Canada) and Celtic Connections (Scotland). On her own front, Zaynab took her Live EP tour on the road to Western Canada in September 2018 and over to Eastern Canada with Arlene Paculan in November 2018, performing in both house concerts and local live music venues. As for 2019, Zaynab is working towards releasing a series of singles, a new EP and tour dates, so far, in both Canada and USA. When she isn’t performing, Zaynab runs music workshops at various schools within the multiple school boards in Ontario. Her workshops are delivered using steelpan, percussion or band instruments with the goal being more than learning repertoire. Her workshops run in schools with higher numbers of newcomers to Canada, for groups with special learning abilities, as part of health and wellness conferences and for overall team building and strengthening of non-verbal and nonviolent communication. She recently attended a Musicians Without Borders Training of Workshop Leaders program, in Ede, to help enhance her workshop leading abilities. In a realistic world, Zaynab would be able to integrate touring as a performer and running music-based workshops along the way.
