In this chat, we get to meet Canadian singer, songwriter, multi instrumentalist, folk music icon, Loreena Mckennitt. In this conversation, Loreena and I dsicuss her new live recording The Road Back Home, which is out now on her own Quinlan Road label , and how she distinguishes it as a “field recording” more than a proper live album. We discuss touring during COVID, and the trials and tribulations of that, as well as her love of world traveling and how those travels have impacted her work over the years. And moreover, we talk about how she came to love and be a part of the Celtic folk music world. We also touch on her expansive tour from this spring where she revisited her landmark album The Visit for its 30th anniversary — and be sure to check out her tour in Europe starting this summer to commemorate the 30th anniversary of The Mask And The Mirror. So needless to say - Loreena has been making vital, beautiful music for several decades now, and so we had a LOT to talk about. It was an honor and pleasure. Thank you for listening.

Maybe not quite celtic, but a couple of the early bands had that flavor. And I'll put on some Great Big Sea—though sadly they aren't around anymore, Alan Doyle is still out there making music. And when I really feel the need to get up and dance, I thrown on some Natalie MacMaster. We had to ask about the red hair, does one get ridiculed or admired? Loreena McKennitt has a mass of beautiful red curls but is mostly admired for her music. When Mo thinks of her, she sees mists and magic and fairy tales. Loreena's sold more than 14 million albums and toured the world with her harp and her beloved band of fellow musicians. She's a singer, songwriter and composer with a new album full of early Celtic tunes called “The Road Back Home”, and is going on tour where she hopes the audience will sing along with her! Loreena's never had a manager and organizes the tours herself. She says the insurance during Covid was half a million dollars! We talk to her about the joys of touring and about being a privacy activist. Ok, that was our word, Loreena says she's not an activist, but she sure sounds like one, as she speaks about trying to make the world a better place. She was born in Morden, Manitoba and now lives in Stratford Ontario. You can watch the show on our YouTube page. You can grab a copy of the transcription on the episode page. Music has always been a central part of my life — my mother said I sang before I spoke. Most of what I write is pure improvisation, and I write the music and lyrics on the fly, in a holistic manner. As such, my music is a diary, a means of therapy, and a window into my deepest thoughts and other worlds, and encompasses everything from pure folk to multitrack experimental or atmospheric music. At 15, my parents took me on a vacation that would change my life. We went to Michigan and "while we were there," we visited the Interlochen Academy for the Arts. I was transfixed by the immense talent around me and I never forgot that place. One day, I mentioned the school to my mother and she had me apply. I was accepted and never looked back. I went on to study music composition at Peabody Conservatory of Music (Now The Peabody Institute of Music of the Johns Hopkins University) and the Yale School of Music and studied under composers Jacob Druckman, Martin Bresnick, Poul Ruders, and Morris Moshe Cotel. I've written string quartets and orchestra pieces. But eventually, I realized that I was my own instrument and pursued my authentic musical voice. I will never forget the day I discovered the true power in and freedom I could experience when I connected deep into my soul and let it all out — the beautiful, the dark, the ecstatic, the bloody, the traumatic, the angry. It is one of the most wonderful experiences a human being can have. Influences include Arvo Part, Ani DiFranco, George Crumb, John Cage, Bjork, Sinead O'Connor, Loreena McKennitt, and a host of others. I hope to reach out to others through the Internet during this crisis and make connections to other musicians and listeners. https://oeinc.bandcamp.com/album/gate https://nicolelepera.com

Drawing inspiration from Celtic, Nordic folk and electronica, Parabola West is the artist persona of New Zealand-based American singer and songwriter Amy Tucker West. Originally from Springfield, MA, Amy began songwriting on piano as a teenager and, at age 21, she was recruited into London-based trip-hop band Dreamfield. With two critically acclaimed releases to their credit before splitting in 2003, West relocated to New Zealand, taking a 10-year break from music to work in IT and engineering recruitment, returning to her musical roots in 2013 under the moniker Parabola West.  This is the soundtrack of Middle-Earth, mixed in with elements of Loreena McKennitt and female-fronted synth pop / indietronica. Living completely off-grid in an eco-home up a misty mountain, Parabola West is entirely self and fan-funded as a 100% independent artist with no label affiliation.  Parabola West released her debut 'Did You Hear?' EP in 2014, followed by her 'Purity of Weakness' EP in 2017. More recently, she also released "Stars Will Light The Way," a 13-track LP, all recorded at the healing frequency of 432Hz.  https://www.parabolawest.comhttps://parabolawest.bandcamp.comSubscribe to my monthly mailing list for the latest music news, updates and my next interviews and events:http://eepurl.com/gtw6PPQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna  Every Saturday on Modsnap RadioKMOD: San AntonioListen : http://modsnapradio.comPlaylist and podcast: https://djnocturna.comYouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DJNocturna#ModsnapRadio #Postpunk #goth #Industrial #Dark80s  #DarkWave #ethereal

Jennie starts off by sharing her dream from age 3 in which a wolf bites off a chunk of her head. She has found dream work to be a process of reclaiming her body and setting free her voice. She reads three of poems centered on her dream work (or as she terms it "dream discovery") around the Earth Goddess, otherwise known as the Bird Goddess. We talk about the “odd and precise counsel” that dreams provide, and Jennie describes how she uses the labyrinth that she created in her backyard to deepen to impact that dreams have. Whether it's the Chalice Well that accidentally became a part of the Brobdingnagian Bards logo or my very first Renaissance festival, Excalibur Fantasy Faire. I love stories about life during the time of Camelot. So I guess it wasn't much of a surprise that I fell in love with Loreena McKennitt's song “Lady of Shalott” 30 years ago. Her song was written based on a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson. I have my own connection to it too which I'll tell you more about in a bit. But first, I'm extremely pleased to have Loreena McKennitt share her story about how and why “The Lady of Shalott” also became a song. In September, she re-released a 30th anniversary edition of her 1991 album The Visit. The album has sold more than two million copies. It features all of the original songs remastered, plus, a bunch of live performances, alternate mixes, and even some interviews she's done about the album. 8:11 - “The Lady Of Shalott Live Trio - October 28, 2016 Gaillard Centre” by Loreena McKennitt from The Visit - The Definitive Edition You can find out more about Loreena McKennitt at https://loreenamckennitt.com/. You'll also find her all over streaming. This story was released along with other stories as promo for The Visit, The Definitive Edition. So you can find out more about the songs from that album. I gotta say I love her description of this song. I feel like she beautifully captured the imagery of the pastoral English countryside. In the fall of 2019, McKennitt put her career on hold to place more time and attention on civic matters and climate change, while also advocating for stronger legislation to protect artists' rights and encouraging people to buy their music directly from the artist whenever possible. That's fantastic. We need more people to work on the Climate Renaissance. 16:20 - SUPPORT WHAT YOU LOVE The musicians on this podcast are happy to share their music freely with you. You can find their music on streaming music sites. But streaming is a way to sample the music. If you hear something you love, these artists need your support. Please visit their website, sign up to their mailing list and buy something. The holiday season is nearly here. If you're looking for gifts, why not a classic physical CD. I know, I know. Fewer people are buying CDs these days. But that doesn't mean it won't be a great gift for some people. If that's not good enough, you can also buy a shirt, a sticker, a pin, a songbook, jewelry, or even digital downloads for you or a friend. Your purchase allows musicians to keep making music. If you're not into the physical stuff, many artists accept tips or are on Patreon. So please support the arts. If this show made you happy, then you can also join the Gunn Runners Club on Patreon. That was because of a TV mini-series called Anne of Green Gables. The show was based on the books by Lucy Maud Montgomery. There's a wonderful scene in the series where Anne Shirley and some friends reenact the story of “The Lady of Shalott” using a boat. Anne is lying in the boat with flowers across her chest. Her friends push her out onto the river as she recites the poem. The boat slowly glides downstream before it springs a leak. She sits up and tries her best to scoop water out of the sinking boat. Eventually, she is rescued at a bridge by her love interest, the dashing Gilbert Blythe. My mom introduced me to the VHS of the mini-series during my senior year of high school. I don't know why the show resonated so much with me. Maybe it had a lot to do with the beautiful imagery of Prince Edward Island and the wild imagination and creativity of “that Anne-Girl.” It still delights me to this day, though I haven't seen the show in probably a decade. In college, I read all of Montgomery's books and even devoured a book of poetry by her. I remember one poem resonated a LOT at the time. But I can't for the life of me remember what it was. By 2004, Anne of Green Gables was sort of a comfort show for me. I used to watch shows on repeat while I worked. This one regularly made it into rotation for me. One evening I was watching it. I paused the show and picked up the autoharp. I wrote a tribute to dreamers like Anne. The song was sadly short-lived at shows. But I eventually recorded it for my CD, A Tribute to Love. 20:49 - “Here's to the Dreamers” by Marc Gunn from A Tribute to Love 23:02 - One final question: What song would you like to hear more about? Hey, y'all. I am Shay. This is thebuzzr podcast. Independent music releases, global coverage. Welcome & enjoy. Episode 71. First, music trivia for August 16th. August 16, 1977, we lost the “King of Rock ‘n' Roll” Elvis Presley. RIP Elvis. We feature String Bone today. Southern Ontario songwriter Barry James Payne is the architect of String Bone. String Bone brings Payne's true life narratives close to the ear with tender arrangements supporting his gruff sincerity, well worn by the rumble of the road. The career of Payne in music has spanned from performing to working the back end. He is the founder of the first Canadian Songwriter's Association. The artist is a gift to Canada. An incredible talent. “Americana to the bone, Canadiana in the heart & soul.” Enjoy the show! Tracks "Waiting For My Dying Day" 31:38:40 "Two Stars Collide" 39:50:88 From the artist Source Americana to the bone, Canadiana in the heart & soul Heart and home are often elusive for those whose spirits are drawn to the open road. Sit back, buckle up and ride along with String Bone down winding highways, around sharp turns, on great escapes and daring rescues with searching songs in pursuit of home for an unbound heart. An unbreakable bone nut creates the essential contact point between a guitar's strings and the wooden body; String Bone draws the chaotic vibrations of the restless heart closer to its desire for gravity with songs of adventure bearing the weight left behind. Southern Ontario songwriter Barry James Payne is the architect of String Bone, and brings listeners to a collection of artfully designed songs and stories with "Love & Highways", his latest full-length recording. String Bone brings Payne's true life narratives close to the ear with tender arrangements supporting his gruff sincerity, well worn by the rumble of the road. Many of Payne's songs on 'Love & Highways' as well as his debut 'nadir' drive through darkness, betrayal and remorse towards love, light, escape and freedom on the road ahead with String Bone at the wheel. Payne shares struggles with relationships, and wrestles in the aftermath of lost wishes and broken dreams with an eye towards the next adventure. Unraveling ten melodic originals and two well-chosen covers from Neil Young and Radiohead, 'Love & Highways' features a full complement of players including pedal steel by Steve Wood, electric guitar by the album's producer Shannon Lyon, cello by Ben Bolt-Martin and violins by Payne's 'Rant Maggie Rant' band-mate Lindsay Schindler. In the passenger seat on "Love & Highways" is a stellar collection of guest vocalists including Sarah Jane Scouten, Mae Moore and longtime String Bone collaborator Ginger St. James, who also co-wrote 'Where Do You Go'.  Violinist Lindsay Schindler also contributes to trio harmonies on a soaring cover of Neil Young's "Birds" with Trent Severn collaborators Dayna Manning and Emm Gryner.  Roman Tome (New Country Rehab) contributes background vocals to "Somber Eyes", as well as percussion on five of the album's tracks. "Love & Highways" was recorded by Shannon Lyon at Lyon's Lake Studio in Point Clark and Bayfield, Ontario at sessions through 2015 and 2016, with additional sessions at Stratford's Knox Presbyterian Church by John Hazen (Loreena McKennitt, Rita Chiarelli, Harry Belafonte). With special guest star and Inklings scholar, Sørina Higgins!   Our conversation about Till We Have Faces, C.S. Lewis' final novel, continues, with a veritable musical extravaganza at the end (really, we talk about music from the '70s, 80's, and 90's that would fit Till We Have Faces--not niche at all.  At all.) We'll be back in two weeks.  Meanwhile, consider this an invitation to be on our podcast, no Inklings expertise required; if you'd like to talk with us, we want you to join us for a show/conversation.  Email us at InklingsVarietyHour@gmail.com.   Many thanks to Sørina (who has a lot of Inklings expertise) for joining us!  We plan to have her on again in the near future to talk about Charles Williams' Poetry, or perhaps even The Inklings and King Arthur.  Texmoot, which we promoted in the previous episode, has already passed, but feel free to get in touch about attending next year's session! Some things mentioned on this episode: J.G. Frazer's The Golden Bough, of course. Elizabeth I's Speech to the Troops at Tilbury and the Kate Beaton adaptation. "Christian Apologetics," the essay where Lewis makes his religion/soup comparison (collected in God in the Dock: Essays on Theology and Ethics). Music Mentioned/Sampled in this Episode: The "Our Father" in Aramaic The Hurrian Hymn In God's Country versus Zoo Station, both by U2 "She Came On," by Super Deluxe Chopin's Raindrop Prelude "She's a Mystery to Me," by Roy Orbison Binnorie/Twa Sisters Folk-song, as interpreted by: Custer LaRue, Loreena McKennitt, Jerry Garcia "Tainted Love," by SoftCell "No Rain," by Blind Melon Mainly, of course, we talk about Chapters 5 and 6 of Till We Have Faces.  Enjoy, and we'll be back in two weeks!
