In this insightful episode, Allan McKay sits down with Colin Giles, head of the School for Animation and Visual Effects at Vancouver Film School, for a deep dive into the world of modern VFX education. They discuss Colin's fascinating journey from small town artist to leading a world-class animation school, the intense pressures faced by today's students, and how virtual learning during COVID has transformed educational models. Colin shares wisdom on the irreplaceable value of in-person collaboration, how AI is impacting the curriculum, and the vital role of social media and online presence for aspiring artists. This is a must-listen for anyone curious about the future of visual effects and what it takes to succeed as a student in 2023.   Quotes: "There is a difference between just crafting images and telling a story. I think that it's part of that learning process as well that is very exciting." Students should focus on their own artistic growth rather than unrealistic pressure to be the best or work at certain studios. Everyone has a unique voice to contribute. Virtual learning revealed the need for adaptable, hybrid education models that combine the benefits of online and in-person instruction. However, nothing replaces the creative energy of people connecting and collaborating face-to-face. AI is a useful iteration tool to quickly generate ideas, but won't replace the human touch. It's important for students to learn with the technology and discover its applications together. Aspiring artists must cultivate an authentic online presence that shows their personality and connects them to a community, not just a portfolio checklist. Social media engagement is vital for networking and getting hired.

MOB FAMILY TIES, 9min., Canada Directed by Britt Dallyn After grandpa Michael begins to unintentionally rat on old associates due to his mental decline, the Leslie's, a mob family, face a moral dilemma whether they need to whack grandpa or not as they host his possible final meal in this send up of traditional TV sitcoms. Get to know the filmmaker: I made this at Vancouver Film School for what they call “demo shoots”. Meaning after we had filmed our higher budget, 2-3 day shoots throughout the year, we were given an opportunity to film one more project before the year ended to add to our demo reels. Unlike the shoots earlier in the year however, these projects had no budget and had to be filmed within the school for 1 day only. Everybody had to write a 6 page script and pitch it to the teachers as an assignment where the teachers would pick 6 to actually be filmed. So with those parameters I thought about what I had access to for free within the school. Then I thought “hey, that one pre-built set kinda looks like a sitcom set. I've always appreciated a good sitcom, so what if I made one of my own but with a dark kind of humour that you wouldn't typically see in a show like this.” I found the contrast of all the cheery dressings of a sitcom mixed with a story about murder to be promising for a comedy. In short, like many solutions in film, it all came together out of necessity. This Explains Why Disney Made Moana 2 in Canada?

Clownfish TV: Audio Edition

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 11, 2024 11:42

Why did Disney make Moana 2 in secret in CANADA? Well, it might just have to do with the country's tax incentives for animation. Could Disney move other productions to Canada as well? Time will tell... ➡️ Tip Jar and Fan Support: http://ClownfishSupport.com ➡️ Official Merch Store: http://ShopClownfish.com ➡️ Official Website: http://ClownfishTV.com ➡️ Audio Edition: https://open.spotify.com/show/6qJc5C6OkQkaZnGCeuVOD1 ➡️ Gaming News: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A7VIqE3r5MQkFgL9nifNc Additional Context: Let's dive into this cinematic voyage and explore how Canada's policies could shape the future of Disney's production landscape. Canada offers a lucrative Canadian film or video production tax credit (CPTC), which provides a refundable tax credit of 25% of qualified labor expenditures, with no limit on the tax credit amount for a production. This incentive is designed to encourage production within Canada and support Canadian programming. Such financial incentives are crucial for large studios like Disney, seeking to maximize production efficiency and minimize costs without compromising quality. Moreover, Disney's strategic move to open a new production facility in Vancouver during the pandemic was highlighted as a savvy business decision, leveraging Canadian tax breaks and other incentives. This decision also taps into the country's rich pool of animation talent, with institutions like Sheridan and Vancouver Film School providing a steady stream of skilled graduates. The pandemic added layers of complexity to international work arrangements, making local production and hiring more appealing due to the logistical challenges and restrictions on cross-border movement. Disney's announcement of "Moana 2" set to hit theaters in November 2024 further cements the company's commitment to expanding this beloved franchise. Directed by Dave Derrick Jr. and featuring music from Grammy winners and nominees, the sequel promises an epic new adventure for Moana, Maui, and a brand-new crew, embarking on a journey into dangerous, long-lost waters. This pivot to Canada for "Moana 2" could signal a broader strategy by Disney to leverage international production incentives more aggressively. As animation and film production costs continue to rise, countries offering substantial tax breaks and incentives become increasingly attractive for studios looking to optimize their budgets. Canada's welcoming stance towards the film industry, coupled with its robust talent pool, makes it an ideal candidate for future Disney projects. While Disney has yet to publicly attribute "Moana 2"'s Canadian production directly to tax incentives, the financial and logistical advantages are clear. As we eagerly await the next chapter in Moana's saga, it's worth keeping an eye on Disney's global production strategies and whether other productions will follow Moana's lead to Canadian shores. Time will indeed tell if Canada becomes a new hub for Disney's animated adventures, but for now, the magic of "Moana 2" is set to captivate audiences from its Canadian production base. Kim Hudson grew up in the Yukon, a Hero's daughter with a Cinderella Complex. Basically life taught her many of the things she needed to know to write this book. Kim spent the first half of her career exploring her masculine side, first as a field geologist and later as a federal land claims negotiator. Exploring her feminine side became important to her as she raised her two daughters. This lead me to study Writing for Film and Television at Vancouver Film School, and take courses on mythology, feminism and psychology including a Jungian Odyssey in Switzerland. This theory was developed by closely observing the archetypal expressions that are all around us in movies, music, television, advertisements and stories of personal growth, including her own. The Virgin's Promise is her first book. The Virgin's Promise demystifies the complexities of archetypes and clearly outlines the steps of a Virgin's Journey to realize her dream. Audiences need to see more than brave, self-sacrificing Heroes. They need to see Virgins who bring their talents and self-fulfilling joys to life. The Virgin's Promise describes this journey with beats that feel incredibly familiar but have not been illustrated in any other screenwriting book. It explores the yin and yang of the Virgin and Hero journeys to take up their power as individuals, and includes a practical guide to putting this new theory into action. Please enjoy my conversation with Kim Hudson. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2664729/advertisement

The mission of Monsters Aliens Robots Zombies (MARZ) is to deliver feature-film quality visual effects on television timelines by harnessing GPU clusters, game engine technology, AI and senior industry talent. Leveraging these pillars allows us to consistently execute with both speed and quality for our premium television projects. Lon Molnar is the Co-President of MARZ. With more than 20 years of experience, Lon has contributed a vast amount of visual effects to film and television as an Artist, VFX Supervisor, and former CEO of the award winning VFX company Intelligent Creatures. Inspired by the magic of TOY STORY, Lon attended the Vancouver Film School with the single goal of opening up his own VFX studio. As he built his resume, he became dissatisfied with working on VFX for tv, and set his sights on feature films. He became a VFX generalist, working in animation, lighting, compositing and modelling, while using a vast array of software.  After serving as the CG Supervisor on the groundbreaking films CHICAGO and THE CELL, he fulfilled his earlier dream and opened up Intelligent Creatures in 2002. Working with talented creators like Mark Forster, Darren Aronofsky, Alejandro González Iñárritu, David Tattersall, Oliver Stone and others, Lon quickly built the Toronto-based VFX house into an award-winning studio. Intelligent Creatures lent its creativity to dozens of projects such as MR AND MRS SMITH, THE WITCH, and BABEL. They built robust pipelines to tackle critically-acclaimed projects, such as the WATCHMEN's famous Rorschach mask of moving inkblots. Some of their later work, such as the award-winning series ORPHAN BLACK and the Emmy-nominated CURIOSITY: BATTLEFIELD CELL pushed the boundaries of visual effects on TV. Fifteen years after the formation of Intelligent Creatures, Lon recognized that unlike when he had started in the industry, TV was no longer the "lesser" medium for VFX. When he spoke to Jonathan Bronfman, the two found themselves sharing symbiotic ideas. They saw a gap that others didn't. What if, they asked, we can build a company that focuses on serving only one market, and defines the standard of excellence in that market? That was the beginning of MARZ. In this Podcast, Allan McKay interviews Co-President of MARZ Lon Molnar about the company's history and leveraging its technology innovations; the invisible visual effects and the development of the de-aging technology; positive outcomes of the COVID-19 pandemic in the field of VFX an so much more! Overview In a world where hyper-positivity, Rachael Biggs' And I Was Like November offers a glimpse of the other side, while navigating themes of isolation and longing. These are stories of what happens to the women that didn't get their happy ending—the ones who don't believe the cliches about family being everything and who know that live-laugh-love isn't the cure all. Taboo topics that embrace a gritty reality include transactional sex, romantic obsession, maternal disdain and teenaged drug dealing are linked by the need to survive in the midst of questionable sanity and deep loneliness.  Rachael Biggs is an author, screenwriter, copywriter and journalist. EPISODE 75 -Today we welcome our very first screen writer and director, Lauren Barker!Lauren Barker wrote and directed her first feature film, Cohabitation, on a micro budget in Milwaukee, WI. The thriller had a successful worldwide festival run and won the award for Best Actress in a Feature Film (for Tiffany Streng) at the Milwaukee Twisted Dreams Film Festival. The movie got distributed by Indie Rights and is available to stream on Amazon, Google Play, Tubi TV, and YouTube. Barker's other writing & directing work includes the short films Smile, Baby and Return to Me.Lauren Barker told her parents that she wanted to be a screenwriter when she was 14, which naturally thrilled them. While they gently encouraged her to consider other possibilities, exploring different career paths was never an option for Lauren. The pull to tell visual stories was anchored in her soul.Barker explored all kinds of writing at Winona State University, where she earned her Bachelor's in English and began to dabble in theatre along the way. She went on to study screenwriting at Vancouver Film School, graduating with honors in August of 2014.While at VFS, Barker wrote numerous projects including feature films, TV specs, short films, and comedy sketches. She also wrote and directed her first short film Smile, Baby  in Vancouver. After returning to her home state of Wisconsin, Barker made another short film, Return to Me, and then started working as a production assistant to fully immerse herself in the film world and learn as much as she could about all aspects of production. In 2018, she founded her production company, Green Rabbit Pictures, and directed her first feature film, Cohabitation. That same year, Barker began working as an assistant camera in order to further expand her experience as a filmmaker.Barker writes almost every day and continuously works to hone her many skills in order to be useful on any film set. She is always looking to expand her knowledge and connections and relishes the chance to work in a new medium or genre.Since 2017, Barker has worked as a mentor for Friends in Film, sharing her experience and giving advice to aspiring filmmakers on breaking into the business. At different points in her life, Barker has also been a yoga instructor, a professional tea connoisseur, and a collegiate bowler.https://www.laurenbarkerfilm.com/ ___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Have a podcast and need a great website? What is it like to develop a story through dialogue, how do you get your work on the stage, and where does inspiration itself come from? These questions and many more are explored as Odin and Rachel sit down for a deep dive into the world of writing for the stage and the page. Rachel's play, "Little Egg, Big World" premiered Off Broadway at Theatre Row on June 24th, 2022. An autofiction piece about growing up as a sperm donor child and then becoming an adult egg donor. Co-Produced with BBTF. Rachel Leighson is an actress/singer/writer hailing from Los Angeles, CA. She literally fell into performing at the age of seven when she nearly spun off stage during the tornado dance in The Wizard of Oz and never looked back. In Los Angeles, she performed with the Los Angeles Opera in Noye's Fludde, Judas Maccabaeus, and Friedl under Maestro James Conlon. She then attended Oberlin College and Conservatory and Vancouver Film School for Acting in Film and Television. Rachel has performed all over the United States (38 states and counting!) and in NYC at Carnegie Hall, Playwrights Horizons, St. Luke's Theatre, and The Actor's Temple Theatre. Her acting and writing passions center around moralistically grey women and finding the nuanced perspective in a piece or character. She believes theatre gives people a safe opportunity to explore uncomfortable truths and grow, and that is the base of everything she wants to do. Rachel is a donor child with two moms, too many cats, too many half-siblings, and too many opinions. She wouldn't have it any other wacky way. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/roundtablewriters/support

Kim Hudson grew up in the Yukon, a Hero's daughter with a Cinderella Complex. Basically life taught her many of the things ahe needed to know to write this book.

Stories (Most of my jokes are based on true stories) - For a 1960s themed Spirit day in High School. I dressed up as the original all-white Cowboy version of Ghost Rider, and everyone thought I was dressed as a Klansmen. It didn't help that when I took the cowboy hat off my cowl/face hood stuck straight up. - I full-on shart my pants after a 3 hour drive back home where I was running on nothing but gas station coffee. - I recently performed a whole 5 minute set while out of breath at the Funniest MF competition, because I thought it would be a good idea to do laps on stage. - When I was living in Florida I shared a bed with my male chinese roommate on a road trip to Key West, because I was too shy to ask the front desk for an extra bed. Goals - I want to be able to perform a solid 30 minutes on stage by the end of August. - I want to make someone laugh so hard they fall over. - I want to finally pay off my credit card that's been maxed out since producing my first short film last year. - I want to produce more short films, and eventually write and produce a feature length film. - I want to finish writing the story bible for a sitcom idea I've had boiling in my head for awhile - I want to be able to live off my entertainment work be it acting, stand-up, or producing - I would love to eventually run a business where I work with international comic book creators and writers to translate and publish their work and characters for english speaking audiences --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

The Prison Post

Our guest on our show today is a world changer! On The Prison Post #24 we discuss a host of topics around restorative justice with Katherin Hervey! Katherin is an artist and filmmaker whose work focuses on those of us who live in the margins but refuse to be marginalized. She is interested in what is hiding in the dark crevices and corners of the American landscape and our collective psyches, believing truth is often found in the dark before it shines in the light. Katherin was the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of "Shades of Contradiction", a nationally distributed arts and culture magazine dedicated to critical thinking and creative action. She has produced, directed and art-directed short documentary and narrative films, including "The Cocktail Waitress" for KCTS/PBS broadcast. THE PRISON WITHIN, her award-winning first feature film, sprung from her work as a Los Angeles Public Defender and volunteer prison college instructor, where she worked weekly with men who had committed serious acts of violence and had been sentenced to die in prison. Unredeemable in the eyes of the law, she saw the exact opposite and sought to create a film that captured the complexity of the people locked behind bars, in stark contrast to the dominant black and white depiction of victims, prisoners, and those we label as "criminals". Katherin is currently at work on a new film. Katherin received her Bachelor's degree in Cross-cultural Communication in America from the University of Washington and is a graduate of Vancouver Film School. She also holds a Juris Doctorate degree from Loyola Law School. Her mixed media artworks and creative fiction have been exhibited in galleries and published in online and print literary journals. The notion that the prison system is broken is nothing new. What's far more interesting is how to fix it—which is the focus of her award-winning documentary The Prison Within. Directed by Katherin Hervey, the documentary takes viewers inside a unique program at San Quentin Prison focused on restorative justice and transforming the prison system.  During meetings of the San Quentin Victim Offender Education Group (VOEG), the incarcerated and survivors come together in a restorative justice program that encourages the incarcerated to see how the trauma they've experienced contributed to their criminality and helps them understand the impact of their crimes on those they victimized.  I would like to invite you to watch The Prison Within, which can be found here: https://vimeo.com/355387389 Katherin Hervey, speaks nationally on prison reform, restorative justice, and the ideas central to the film – hurt people hurt people, intergenerational trauma, unpacking trauma as the path to personal and collective healing, and more. #CROPOrganization #ThePrisonPostPodcast #RestoringLivesandHealingCommunities Please follow us, download our show, leave us a comment, and subscribe to The Prison Post for our exciting upcoming episodes.
