Alexa is joined on the Singing Teachers Talk podcast by Carrie Garrett, who is a BAPAM registered SLT and vocal rehabilitation coach, singer and co-founder of the company VitaVoice. Through VitaVoice, Carrie and her team produce supplements to support the vocal health of voice users. Carrie has over 25 years of experience as a singer and singing teacher, and she is on the podcast to discuss physical well-being and supplementary products for singers. KEY TAKEAWAYS Carrie views well-being as encompassing comfort, health and happiness. When it comes to vocal health, these are the ultimate goals for singers and individuals undergoing voice therapy. The aim is to ensure that individuals are comfortable and healthy enough to achieve everything they desire with their voice, while also finding happiness in the process.  VitaVoice is a daily food supplement capsule designed to support your well-being and health and maintain your voice. Their product includes key vitamins, minerals, and botanicals, including lion's mane mushroom, ashwagandha and ginseng. If you have a healthy lifestyle and a good diet, you generally don't need to take supplements. However, there are other factors which impact this, such as the lack of sunlight in the UK at certain times of the year. This can lead to people lacking in vitamin D. As singers, we also live irregular lives, often on the road where it's hard to eat healthy.  Adaptogens are a class of plants and herbs that help your mind and body adapt to a wide range of stressors (physical, mental, emotional and environmental), helping you to restore balance and function at your best. Adaptogens can boost your energy levels naturally, giving you sustained energy levels throughout the day. The term ‘Nootropics' refers to substances which have a positive impact on mental skills such as memory, creativity, motivation, and attention. They increase blood circulation to the brain, providing increased energy and oxygen flow. Alexa is joined by guest Louisa Morgan who teaches singing, spoken voice, and audition prep with a specialism in acting through song. She is the main voice teacher for the full-time acting students at the Cygnet Theatre in Exeter and teaches musical theatre students at Italia Conti. Louisa is a Vocal Process accredited teacher and is currently studying part-time for her master's degree in Vocal Pedagogy with the Voice Study Centre. Louisa is here to talk about her specialist subject of acting through song and that of her master's research project, which aims to challenge current acting through song techniques for the musical performer.   KEY TAKEAWAYS The main challenge musical theatre performers face when it comes to acting through song is the synergy of the three disciplines. Generally, we train musical theatre actors by sending them to their singing lessons, then their acting, and then their dance. The difficulty is bringing all of those together and embracing that the singer will have to go out on stage and do all three at once.  Another problem when it comes to acting through song training is that there isn't enough when it comes to the text-based approach. There is a big gap when it comes to the text that's in front of the student on the page. Where is their punctuation? Which words are being emphasised?  Louisa finds that the skills she learned acting for radio are very transferable when it comes to acting through singing, especially on the script side of things. Add a double question mark when it's a real question, and cross the question mark out if it's rhetorical, highlighting their verbs on the text.  When a singer is fully embodying the character and feeling the emotion we expect them to feel, it can actually cause problems when it comes to vocal health and on stage movement. Louisa is studying what people are listening for in the voice to make them feel that emotion. She believes the focus should be on making the listener feel the emotion rather than the performer feeling that emotion themselves.    BEST MOMENTS   ‘You shouldn't be approaching a song if you don't know the context'  ‘Pulling out those verbs doesn't mean just making them louder'  ‘If we could collaborate more in training institutes, everyone would benefit'  ‘The job is not that we feel the emotion, it's that the audience feels the emotion'   EPISODE RESOURCES  Guest Website: louisajmorgan.co.uk Social Media:  Instagram: @louisamorganvoicecoach Relevant Links & Mentions:  Voice Study Centre: voicestudycentre.com Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 40 Integrated Skills: Teaching Singing to Dancers with Jennie Morton Practitioners Mentioned: Stanislavski; Meisner  David Sabella: https://www.davidsabella.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 34 The Most Neglected Skill in Vocal Training with Phillippe Hall Acting Through Song by Paul Harvard Acting in Musical Theatre: A Comprehensive Course by Joe Deer and Rocco Dal Vera  Actions: The Actor's Thesaurus by Marina Caladrone & Maggie Lloyd-Williams    ABOUT THE GUEST    Louisa teaches singing, spoken voice, and audition prep, with a specialism in acting through song. Louisa also teaches musical theatre students at Italia Conti on the Diploma, BA and CertHe courses. Many of Louisa's students are either working towards a career in the performing arts or are already working in the performance industry. Louisa is currently working part-time towards an MA in Vocal Pedagogy with Voice Study Centre (due to complete in October 2023). She is now one of only 19 Vocal Process accredited teachers, a course headed by Dr Gillyanne Kayes and Jeremy Fisher. BAST Training podcast

Joining Alexa today is Jo Sear, a rock, pop and soul singer, and teacher of CCM singing styles. Jo completed her MA in Voice Pedagogy through the Voice Study Centre and will soon begin her PhD at The Royal Northern College of Music. She's here to discuss teaching popular music styles, the topic of her recently published final MA dissertation project.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Jo's paper Modern Vocal Pedagogy: Investigating a potential curricular framework for training popular music singing teachers was recently published. She would love to see a course created that teaches people how to be popular music singers. She wants students to learn about the industry, how producers and engineers think, and how studio singing is different from live singing. Contemporary commercial music, or CCM, is a term used by some vocal pedagogues in the US to refer to non-classical music. This term encompasses jazz, pop, blues, soul, country, folk and rock styles. Jo suggests that jazz should be its own category because of the kind of improvisation and musical knowledge needed to sing it. She also thinks that musical theatre and popular music genres do cross over but don't belong in the same category. Jo listens to the singers that her students want to emulate and then brings them more examples of similar artists who they may not have heard before. For example, if someone wanted to sing like Florence and the Machine, she'd bring them a song from Kate Bush. It's about helping students find their style but not pushing them in a direction. BEST MOMENTS  ‘I'm trying to be the teacher that I wanted, that I never had' ‘The whole basis of popular music is authenticity' ‘Listening to lots of different artists is key'   EPISODE RESOURCES     Guest Website: popupvocaltraining.co.uk Social Media: Facebook: @PopUpVocalTraining Youtube: @popupvocaltraining828 Relevant Links & Mentions: Voice Study Centre: com Royal Northern College of Music: rncm.ac.uk British Voice Association (BVA): org.uk The Journal of Popular Music Education: https://www.popularmusiceducation.org/the-journal/ Modern Vocal Pedagogy: Investigating a potential curricular framework for training popular music singing teachers by Joanna Sear Jeanie LoVetri and Somatic Voicework: https://somaticvoicework.com/ This is a Voice by Jeremy Fisher & Gillyanne Kayes Books by John Henny: Teaching Contemporary Singing; Voice Teacher Influencer; Beginning Singing Jo Thompson Singing Coach: http://www.jothompson.net/index.html Yvie Burnett: https://www.yvieburnett.com/ Kim Chandler: http://www.kimchandler.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Dr Matt Edwards: https://www.edwardsvoice.com/ Ann Peckham: Vocal Workouts for the Contemporary Singer Rode Studio Microphone Shure SM58 Microphone Journal of Voice: https://www.jvoice.org/ The work of Heidi Moss Erickson: https://www.heidimosserickson.com/ The Musician's Mind: Teaching, Learning and Performance in the Age of Brain Science by Lynn Helding, Pam Ward et al The work of Dr Trineice Robinson-Martin: https://soulingredients.drtrineice.com/drtrineice BAST Interview Article with Dr Trineice Robinson-Martin: How to Nurture a Singer's Authentic Voice: https://www.basttraining.com/how-to-nurture-a-singers-authentic-voice/ Podcast: A Voice and Beyond by Dr Marisa Lee Naismith Podcast: The Naked Vocalist Voice Work by Christina Shewell So You Want to Sing…Rock and Roll by Matthew Edwards and NATs The Art of Singing Onstage and in the Studio by Jennifer Hamady   ABOUT THE GUEST   Jo has been singing rock, pop and soul music all her life. Her current band is Soul Enforcement Bureau, an 8-piece professional soul band. Jo has been a teacher of CCM singing styles exclusively for over 17 years, working both privately and within secondary and dance schools. She has trained extensively in many different areas of voice study, including the Estill Model, advanced anatomy and voice acoustics, and has taught a wide range of students, from amateurs to professionals. She completed her MA in Voice Pedagogy with Distinction in April 2021 and is a passionate advocate of the importance of training more rock/pop teachers and conducting more contemporary voice research. Her final dissertation project - a research-based curriculum outline for training Popular Music singing teachers - has recently been published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Popular Music Education. Jo begins PhD study at the Royal Northern College of Music in September 2023 on the institution's Music Education pathway. Feed the dog! Changing your pitch patterns can help your listeners understand your emotions and meaning. In this week's This Is A Voice podcast (Season 6 Episode 12), expert vocal trainers Dr Gillyanne Kayes & Jeremy Fisher use the sentence "Feed the dog" to showcase different pitch patterns and meanings. We read out the instructions from the second half of exercise 26 (page 84 of This Is A Voice) and show you step by step how to change meaning, intonation and interest in your speaking voice. Jeremy reads out a paragraph of text with two very different pitch patterns (it's almost like singing), and Gillyanne shares a very simple exercise to help non-singers process their own spoken voice pitch patterns.  Jeremy also demonstrates two different pitch patterns that can become irritating if repeated - the upward inflection and the creak down. There's a BRILLIANT exercise borrowed from UCL's phonetics department for speaking voice inflection that's very close to science fiction, and Jeremy demonstrates all four versions of the exercise to create four different emotional states.(You can go to the free preview of our Pitch, Pace & Power webinar where we explore this more here https://vocal-process-hub.teachable.com/courses/the-vocal-technique-learning-lounge/lectures/27906956) Get the This Is A Voice book here https://amzn.to/3A9steN Get the One Minute Voice Warmup app here, it's got a 4.9star rating Appstore https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/one-minute-voice-warmup/id1212802251 Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.speechtools.warmup&hl=en_GB&pli=1 Sam and Garry at Speechtools are here https://speechtools.co/ We've also got this! ↓ The 5 Days to Better Singing Teaching course online, with voice coaching techniques, vocal articulation exercises and a LOT more for the up-to-date singing teacher is here https://vocal-process-hub.teachable.com/p/5-days-to-better-singing-teaching For the best self-guided learning check out the Vocal Process Learning Lounge - 16 years of vocal coaching resources (over 600 videos) for less than the price of one private singing lesson. Raised in a household where serving was a way of life, Jeremy Fisher learned early on that the only road to success was one paved by hard work. Fulfilling a dream from high school, he entered into law enforcement at 21 years young.  While his police career was short lived, Jeremy will always have a high regard for those who put on the uniform, including his late father who served in Vietnam Veteran. His best friend in high school was an avid outdoorsman and introduced Fisher to archery. A lifelong passion was born that would culminate in the opening of Badger State Adventure two decades later. With his "eager to serve" mentality and likeable personality, the Nebraska native continues to build a steady clientele in northwestern Wisconsin. Meeting Jeremy last summer at an HHAUSA event and sharing a day on the range with him, it was easy to see how driven he was to not only be successful but to learn from others in the world of archery.  He's the kind of person that you felt like you've known for years after only a short conversation and has a contagious enthusiasm that can't help but rub off on anyone within earshot. That willingness to share and help others led Fisher to create The Toxon App. While still in its infant stages, this app has all the makings to be an archers dream when it comes to locating 3D shoots and archery shops from coast to coast. Opening the app, I was immediately alerted to two venues within 50 miles of my house without any further exploration. Jumping to the events tab, little archery icons populated the state of Wisconsin, giving me the opportunity to search out clubs and events that I may want to attend this summer. Jeremy was also excited to announce that push notifications will soon be added to the app, making it even easier to stay connected to all the latest archery happenings in your area. This will now give anyone who is on the app to send those notifications to archers who subscribe to them on Toxon. The app is free for clubs and pro shops to have your venue and events listed and is only going to continue to grow with each passing season. Download it today in your app store. We can't thank Jeremy enough for his passion for archery, support of our cause and his heart for serving. We hope that you enjoy part one of our two-part birthday celebrations. In this episode1:16 - Introduction to our Birthday Celebration of Voices1:44 - Dr Elizabeth Blades from Episode 25:06 - Dr Jenevora Williams from Episode 58:50 - Dr Gillyanne Kayes & Jeremy Fisher from Episode 6 & 712:27 - Ashlie Amber from Episode 916:02 - Lisa Popeil from Episode 1120:01 - Brenda Earle Stokes from Episode 5025:31 - Chris Johnson from Episode 15 28:05 - Dr Elizabeth Benson from Episode 1332:00 - Dr Wendy LeBorgne from Episode 17 & 1835:44 - Nancy Bos from Episode 20 & 2139:18 - Dann Milton from Episode 3244:16 - Nadine Manion from Episode 2446:51 - Heidi Moss Erickson from Episode 3551:15 - Dr Trineice Robinson-Martin from Episode 47For more go to https://drmarisaleenaismith.com/53Like this episode?
