Alyssa Trahan is the featured artist in this Rewind episode. What's a Rewind episode? It's a previously published episode, one of my favorites and merits re-publishing. I also give these episodes a fresh edit, which means you will find it even more enjoyable from a listening perspective. Nashville based singer songwriter Alyssa Trahan first appeared in episode 18 (2017), which is remarkable because the depth of our conversation rivals anything I've done to date, as do the accomplishments Alyssa had made at her then age of 22. Topics covered in our conversation include why she moved to Nashville from Rochester NY, her latest single (at the time), sound engineering, endorsements, sponsors, crowdfunding, her education, gigs that pay the bills, business and marketing, merch, and the biggest lesson she'd learned to date. Find all things Alyssa Trahan at AlyssaTrahan.com. Please enjoy this conversation with me and Alyssa Trahan. On this episode of Roger the Wild Child Show, we are joined by singer/songwriters Alyssa Trahan and Trey Calloway.  Plus country music artists, Grace Maher, returns to guest cohost!!ALYSSA TRAHANA true jill-of-all-trades, Alyssa Trahan is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist (she plays over a dozen), and producer. Growing up in the square mile town of East Rochester, NY, she began writing songs, producing and performing her original music as a young teen before she made the move to Nashville, TN in 2016. Alyssa has an authentically unique style that blends traditional country instrumentation with modern pop production, winning over fans of all genres. Her clever lyrics, impressive musicianship, and smooth vocals transcend across genre lines proving her to be multifaceted and a truly prolific writer. In addition to producing her own music, she has produced tracks for songwriters and artists around the world and earned her degree in Audio Engineering. Known for her energetic and engaging live shows, Trahan has shared the stage with the likes of Maddie & Tae, Randy Houser, Chase Rice, Charlie Daniels, Tanya Tucker, Sara Evans, Josh Turner, Runaway June, and dozens more plus made several festival appearances, including a few headlining spots. Her music has also been featured in many films, commercials, and TV shows including The Jimmy Kimmel Show and The Young and The Restless.    Alyssa has released many artist projects independently and has built quite the following. She has over 250K followers on social media platforms, over 1 million streams and views on streaming platforms and YouTube plus a fast-growing and loyal fan base who named themselves the Trafam. It's no wonder her newest album, “Baby Blues & Stilettos”, debuted in the top ten on the iTunes Country Album Charts and received over 300K first week streams. This would be impressive for any independent artist, but is especially so considering Alyssa produced the album herself during the shutdown of 2020, is a writer on every song, and played over 90% of the instruments on the record. As American Songwriter put it, “It's not that Alyssa Trahan wants to take over country music. Just know that if it ever comes to that, Trahan is a woman who can literally run the show.”TREY CALLOWAY Trey Calloway is a singer-songwriter born and raised in North Carolina. The son of a preacher man, Trey grew up singing in church and was a seasoned performer by the age of 10. Although southern and contemporary gospel were his first musical loves, he was instantly mesmerized by the sounds of country music after hearing a Garth Brooks Greatest Hits album his parents bought for him. A deep understanding and passion for the rocking, boot stomping, country music of artists such as Garth, Clint Black, Alan Jackson, and Travis Tritt began to grow within him. Trey began writing songs, playing guitar, and performing in clubs at age 15. He knew early on without a shadow of a doubt that he would make music his career. Trey fronted multiple bands and won numerous awards in North Carolina before moving to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in 2016. He formed The Trey Calloway Band and has been playing the eastern circuit and Nashville ever since. Trey recorded and released his debut Nashville album entitled Carolina Man and was able to work with some of his musical heroes including Brent Mason, Lonnie Wilson, and Buddy Hyatt on the Mike Rodgers produced album. Trey wrote all 12 songs on the album, including “Daddy From Day One” inspired by the birth of his son Cash. Trey was nominated as the Carolina Country Music Awards (CCMA) Male Artist of the Year in 2018, and one of the songs from Carolina Man, “Home is Where the Heart Is,” won the CCMA Song of the Year as well as Gospel Song of the Year. The title track to Trey's newest EP “Tire Tracks” is currently nominated for 2022 CCMA Song of the Year.

Alyssa Trahan recently participated in a survey for the forthcoming second edition of The Unstarving Musician's Guide to Getting Paid Gigs. I decided to conduct the surveys by phone and to make an episode of this particular conversation, because Alyssa's responses are so insightful and inspiring. As a side note, Alyssa is is now an official two-timer, this being her second conversation with me for the podcast. The format is a little different, because I was conducting the interview based on survey questions. Consequently, I sound like I'm reading questions from a script, all while diligently taking notes. Kind of silly if you think about it, since we were recording. At the time, however, I didn't know I'd end up using the conversation for a podcast episode. It turns out I'm using a few of the conversations I had for the survey as episode material. This was a particularly good conversation though. Alyssa is firing on all cylinders, in my humble opinion. There are of course things she could be doing better, which she admits; but she's still killing it. Alyssa discusses some of the pandemic driven struggles she's experienced over the past year. She shares several openly vulnerable moments, and this is one of the many things I love about her. There was a ton of valuable stuff in this conversation. Possibly my favorite was what Alyssa had to say about new music release strategy as it relates to video and the importance of content in general. Please enjoy this conversation with Alyssa Trahan. Please visit UnstarvingMusician.com for related links and episode transcript. If you'd like to reach out to say hi, you can find me on Twitter and Instagram @robonzodrummer.

At age 16, Samantha LaPorta is the youngest guest I've had on the podcast. Our conversation took place on the same day that her single “It's a Girl Thing” was released. She's a Disney Radio artist, something she always wanted to be, and she's has acquired a number of awards and accolades, including social site Sweety High's Best Holiday Songs of 2016, NCMA's 2015 New Teen Artist and Best Teen Video, and the 2015 Nashville Universe Awards nominations for Rising Star, Best Song, and Best Female Artist. Clearly Samantha has caught the attention of people who matter, which is a testament to her drive and self motivation. All of this in spite of the fact that she's at a very early point in the trajectory of her fast moving career. Samantha has been described musically as a mix of Ariana Grande and Tori Kelly. She sees herself as a pop singer with R&B in her soul. Even though she regularly performs for large crowds, Samantha admits that she was pretty shy in the beginning. She shared with me that she used to be so shy, that she couldn't look at people or have either of her parents in the same room while singing. Clearly she's broken out of her shell, but says she's still working to become the performer she really wants to be. Nowadays Samantha performs, records and works on her skills as a songwriter through practice, coaching and collaborating. She loves playing guitar too. She loves the language and what it gives her as a songwriter. Samantha's mother Terry is very active in the management of Samantha's career. I got the strong impression that there's good balance between Samantha's music, school and social life, thanks to her parents. Terry told me she wants Samantha to reflect on this time in her life, with memories of an actual childhood. Part of this balance includes Samantha's active involvement in giving back, which she does by performing for children with medical needs, the elderly, and anti-bullying events.  She's mega talented, and I know it's a tough business; but I think she'll go far. She's got a good head on her shoulders and great parents guiding her along the way. Lookout indie pop. Here she comes! In this episode, I chat with Nashville based singer songwriter Alyssa Trahan. I must admit that I'm blown away by how much Alyssa has accomplished, and by the amount of expertise she's amassed at the young age of 22. She's driven, smart, and talented. I suspect she's going to do big things in country music, despite the droves of talented people with whom she's forced to compete. I got to some firsts in terms of topics for the podcast, including sponsorships and an enlightening perspective on gigging in and around Nashville. We also touch on her endorsement with Breedlove Guitars. In some regards Alyssa's not doing anything incredibly unique where the business of her music is concerned. She is, however, very methodical and thoughtful in the way she's getting things done. Alyssa shares her story on getting to Nashville from her home in New York, a journey that began with a cleverly orchestrated family vacation. She recorded and co-produced her latest single Pickle Jar at Sound Emporium in Nashville, took the track home, edited it, recorded vocals, sent it off for mastering, and approved the final mix. She's been doing things this way since she was 16, and shared with me that her involvement in the recording process came about because of a bad studio experience long ago. While she did obtain a degree in audio engineering, she's mostly self taught. We backed into the topic of sponsorships when I asked about Yummies coffee (my research told me that she was a big fan). The coffee comes from Yummies Frozen Yogurt, who sponsored Alyssa's Over You video. This was her first sponsorship, and it all happened because of her relationship with Yummies as a customer and friend. Alyssa also scripted the video, with a list of shots and props, showed Yummies what she needed, and then simply asked what they'd be comfortable with. See the end result here (Over You video). Judging from our conversation, Alyssa's music business network has been a valuable resource. She was very gracious in sharing her knowledge during this interview, and I suspect she's very much as gracious in paying it forward to her circle of friends. We also talk about her recent GoFundMe campaign, merchandising, her views on marketing, income streams, why she doesn't gig much in Nashville proper, and lessons she's learned from the music business. She refers to the business as a beautiful struggle, and sees it as a triangle of Talent, Passion and Money. Please enjoy my conversation with this all-around music entrepreneur. Join us this week as we welcome Country music singer songwriter, Alyssa Trahan. Hailing from East Rochester, NY., Alyssa has written over 100 songs, plus those done with co-writers, and continues to add to her long list of originals. Alyssa also performs on a regular basis, well over 100 shows every year, and has opened for acts such as Suzie Vinnick, Chris Pureka, Wisewater, The Dady Brothers, Ryan Broshear, Sawyer Brown and more. In June of 2013, Alyssa released her debut album, "Hi". Soon after the release of "Hi", Alyssa began work on her EP "Wild & Crazy", which was released in January 2015. That same year, Alyssa released a new single titled "I Like It" and began work on her third studio release, an EP titled "Daisies". "Daisies" was released in November of 2015 and has become her most successful release to date. Every song Alyssa has released was written on her own without the help of co-writers, an accomplishment praised by many. Alyssa has also released multiple professional music videos, including for her songs "Cowboy". "Over You", "I Like It", and "I Love Your Truck". Currently, Alyssa lives in Nashville, TN., but travels to Upstate NY often to perform, as she is one of the area's most in demand performers. With her talent and drive, she is one to watch for sure. We will talk to Alyssa about her upcoming schedule, get a behind the scenes look at her music, feature her latest songs, and ask her to share her message for the troops. Please be sure to visit Alyssa Trahan at http://www.alyssatrahan.com/ and spread the word. Fans are welcome to call in and speak live with Alyssa during the show (718) 766-4193. And as always we will give shout outs to our deployed military listeners. Our message to the troops: WE do what we do, because YOU do what you do.
