In October 1989, 10-year-old Amy Mihaljevic began receiving phone calls from a man who claimed to work with her mom. This man told Amy that her mom had received a promotion at work, and he needed Amy's help picking out a gift. They arranged to meet up and Amy was never seen alive again. Despite an extensive investigation with tens of thousands of hours spent on leads and potential suspects, her case remains unsolved to this day. However, in the fall of 2024, investigators say they have brand new evidence that they hope will finally lead to answers.   Anyone with information about Amy Mihaljevic's death is asked to call investigators at 1-877-FBI-OHIO or the Bay Village Police Department at 440-871-1234. In this episode of Who Killed...?, I look into recent developments in notable cases, including the Amy Mihaljevic investigation, the Delphi trial, and an update on serial killer Bruce Lindahl. I discuss the questionable article from the Advertiser Tribune suggesting a suspect may be in custody for the Mihaljevic case. I am urging caution, because of the lack of corroboration from other news outlets and the generic nature of the suspect sketch. Kathy Halle disappeared on March 29, 1979, while on her way to pick up her sister from the Northgate Shopping Center. After an extensive search, her body was discovered in the Fox River weeks later. The investigation into her murder was initially conducted as a missing person case but eventually turned into a homicide investigation. Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the case went cold, and no new evidence emerged for many years. The investigation employed advanced DNA technology, specifically the MVAC (Multi-Vacuum DNA Collection System), designed to extract DNA from older evidence that may be degraded. This technique involves spraying a sterile solution onto evidence and then vacuuming it back up, allowing for a more thorough collection of DNA than traditional swabbing methods. In June 2023, detectives delivered evidence from Halle's case to DNA Labs International in Florida, where testing revealed that the DNA found on her clothing was 9.4 trillion times more likely to have originated from Bruce Lindahl. This conclusive evidence linked him to her murder, providing the closure that had eluded her family for decades. In this episode, we explore the long-standing investigation into the abduction and murder of Amy Mihaljevic, a case that has haunted the community for 35 years. Hosts Bill Huffman and guest Nic from the True Crime Garage podcast discuss the emotional weight of the case, particularly its impact on Amy's family, especially her father, Mark Mihaljevic, who continues to seek closure. A significant focus of the episode is the recent developments in DNA evidence that have emerged in the investigation. The hosts reveal that law enforcement has identified a stain believed to contain suspect DNA, which could be pivotal in solving the case. This new evidence is seen as a promising lead, especially compared to previous evidence that had been less conclusive. The hosts express cautious optimism, noting that while analyzing DNA can be lengthy and complex, the potential for a breakthrough is encouraging. Bill and Nic emphasize the importance of this DNA evidence, contrasting it with earlier findings, such as a few hairs that were insufficient for definitive identification. The current DNA evidence is described as more significant, as it is male DNA that could potentially lead to identifying the perpetrator. The hosts discuss the financial investment made by the Bay Village Police Department and the FBI, which has reportedly exceeded $100,000 on DNA testing, underscoring the seriousness of the investigation. With the update on the Amy Mihaljevic case this week, I thought I'd look for a cold case from her era that has been solved. I landed on the case of the cold case of Mary Davis, a mystery that lingered for decades and has finally been solved. In a remarkable display of the enduring power of forensic science, advancements in DNA technology have led to the identification of Russell Grant Wood as the perpetrator in the tragic demise of Mary Davis. The evidence, submitted to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation in 2022, brought closure to a case that had remained unresolved since 1987. Unfortunately, Wood passed away in 2013, but this breakthrough is a testament to the relentless pursuit of justice and the importance of technological progress in solving crimes. TIPS: 440-871-1234 The thing is, that October 27, 1989, was just like any other day in northeast Ohio up until those first reports of a missing girl from Bay Village hit the news around 10 o'clock. The city and the citizens felt like they had been punched in the gut. How could one of their own be taken right out from under the noses of the public, across from the police station nonetheless? As the days progressed, new information was being released regularly, with the most important being that of this phone caller who had potentially lured Amy to the plaza that Friday afternoon. The information about this phone call was given by two of Amy's friends, who had been told of the plan on the meeting day. In speaking with Chief Spaetzel, these kids were able to provide a few very significant details, one of the most essential being that Amy was told she had $45 to spend and that if there was any money left over, she could also get a gift. On October 27th, 1989, Fifth-grader Amy Mihaljevic went to Bay Village Middle School on Friday wearing green pants, a lavender, and a green sweatshirt, and carrying a denim and red backpack. Her body was discovered 106 days later in Ashland County and her death was ruled a homicide. Her case is the one I am the most passionate about because she was abducted about 3 miles from where I lived. 33+ years later the case is unsolved but there was a case this week that gives us hope. Cobb County police say DNA forensic testing has solved the 51-year-old cold case of the rape and murder of a Marietta third-grade girl. On Jan. 13, 1972, police say 9-year-old Debbie Lynn Randall was abducted while she was walking home from a nearby laundromat in Marietta, raped, and murdered. Officials say for more than 50 years the case has haunted investigators, and detectives have investigated hundreds of leads to no avail, leaving the case cold. Now detectives say genetic genealogy has provided some answers about who left the Randall family without their little girl. We are thrilled when we see cases like Debbie-Lynn get solved because it means there is a chance Amy Mihaljevic's case can still be solved. Amy Mihaljevic was just 10 years old when she went missing. She told friends at school the day she disappeared that she was going with someone to buy her mom a surprise gift. Eyewitnesses reported seeing Amy speaking with a white male, at a local ice cream shop and then leaving with him through a parking lot.  Later police discover that Mihaljevic and other girls in the area had been contacted by telephone by the abductor. The estimated 30-something-year-old man arranged to meet Mihaljevic after school. Just over three months later,  Amy's body was found by a jogger in a farm field in a nearby town.  Investigators say it appears the little girl's body was most likely dumped shortly after her abduction. Mihaljevic dies from a combination of stab wounds to the neck and a blow to her head. Some of the things that were known to be with or on Mihaljevic that day have never been found: the boots Amy was wearing, a denim backpack, a binder with "Buick, Best in Class" written on it, and turquoise earrings in the shape of horse heads.   TIPLINE: Bay Village Police Department (440) 871-1234 Joining Nancy Grace Today: Shera LaPoint - Genetic Genealogist, Author: "The Gene Hunter", Founder: TheGeneHunter.com, Twitter: @LapointShera   Dale Carson - High Profile Attorney (Jacksonville), Former FBI Agent, Former Police Officer (Miami-Dade County), Author: "Arrest-Proof Yourself, DaleCarsonLaw.com  Dr. Jorey Krawczyn - Psychologist (Panama City Beach, FL), Adjunct Faculty with Saint Leo University; Research Consultant with Blue Wall Institute, Author: "Operation S.O.S.", bw-institute.com Greg Smith - Special Deputy Sheriff, Johnson County Sheriff's Office (Kansas),  Executive Director of the Kelsey Smith Foundation, www.kelseysarmy.com   Dr. Michelle DuPre - Former Forensic Pathologist, Medical Examiner and Detective: Lexington County Sheriff's Department, Author: "Homicide Investigation Field Guide" & "Investigating Child Abuse Field Guide", Forensic Consultant, DMichelleDupreMD.com  Nichole Vrsansky - News Anchor, CBS 19 News, Facebook: "Nichole Vrsansky Cleveland 19", Twitter: @NVrsansky, Podcast: "Dark Side of the Land, Who Killed Amy Mihaljevic?"   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of the Crack House Chronicles, Donnie and Dale are pleased to have special guest James Renner on the show to discuss the murder of Lisa Pruett. James Renner is mostly known for his true-crime journalism. As a reporter for Cleveland Scene, he uncovered new clues and suspects in the cold-case murder of Amy Mihaljevic. His work led to the successful closure of the Tina Harmon case in 2009. He spent months researching the Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus abductions when the girls were still missing and is haunted by the fact that he had Castro's name in his notes. His true crime writing has been featured in the Best American Crime Reporting anthology. His selection was the first true crime article to use a dream sequence as a narrative device. Renner has always been interested in filmmaking, as well. In 2004, Renner directed a short film based on the Stephen King story, All That You Love Will Be Carried Away. King sold him the rights for $1. The movie starred Joe Bob Briggs and the late-great Harvey Pekar. It premiered at the 2005 Montreal World Film Festival. Later that same year, Renner directed a documentary about the influence of J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye. The adventure culminated in a short meeting between Renner and the reclusive author at his home in New Hampshire. In 2012, Renner's debut novel – The Man from Primrose Lane – was published by Sarah Crichton Books. Set in Northeast Ohio, The Man from Primrose Lane blends mystery with scifi in a very unique structure.  The story is currently being adapted for television. Renner's second novel, The Great Forgetting, is a “love letter to conspiracy thrillers.” A new work of nonfiction, True Crime Addict, was published in May by Thomas Dunne Books. The New York Times Sunday Book Review called it “shamelessly entertaining.” James Renner is also the founder of The Porchlight Project, a nonprofit that raises money for new DNA testing of cold cases in Ohio. In 2020, an arrest was made in their first case – the unsolved murder of Barbara Blatnik – thanks to their funding of genetic genealogy.
