In this episode of Who Killed...?, I look into recent developments in notable cases, including the Amy Mihaljevic investigation, the Delphi trial, and an update on serial killer Bruce Lindahl. I discuss the questionable article from the Advertiser Tribune suggesting a suspect may be in custody for the Mihaljevic case. I am urging caution, because of the lack of corroboration from other news outlets and the generic nature of the suspect sketch. Kathy Halle disappeared on March 29, 1979, while on her way to pick up her sister from the Northgate Shopping Center. After an extensive search, her body was discovered in the Fox River weeks later. The investigation into her murder was initially conducted as a missing person case but eventually turned into a homicide investigation. Despite the efforts of law enforcement, the case went cold, and no new evidence emerged for many years. The investigation employed advanced DNA technology, specifically the MVAC (Multi-Vacuum DNA Collection System), designed to extract DNA from older evidence that may be degraded. This technique involves spraying a sterile solution onto evidence and then vacuuming it back up, allowing for a more thorough collection of DNA than traditional swabbing methods. In June 2023, detectives delivered evidence from Halle's case to DNA Labs International in Florida, where testing revealed that the DNA found on her clothing was 9.4 trillion times more likely to have originated from Bruce Lindahl. This conclusive evidence linked him to her murder, providing the closure that had eluded her family for decades. This episode features both authors of the new book, Paper Valley: The Fight For The Fox River Cleanup, on the $1.3 billion cleanup of the Fox River in northeast Wisconsin, the world's largest environmental river cleanup of PCB contamination. You can visit their site here. David Allen is an award-winning scientist and author. He directed the natural resource damage assessment of the Lower Fox River and the Bay of Green Bay from 1992 through 2001 as the assessment manager for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. His team led the $10 million effort to collect and organize the information that was used to launch Superfund at the site, and they published one of the most comprehensive and public natural resource damage assessments in U.S. history during 1998-2000. He was the leader and public face of the assessment for federal, state, and tribal agencies. That assessment eventually led to the $1.3 billion dollar cleanup and restoration, paid by the polluters. It was among the largest Superfund efforts since the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska, and the effort led to the largest PCB cleanup in history. Susan Campbell is an award-winning environmental journalist and author. As an environmental reporter for the Green Bay Press-Gazette from 1995-2000, she covered the scientific and political controversy leading to the landmark $1.3 billion dollar cleanup of PCBs from Wisconsin's Fox River, and the implications for the bay of Green Bay and Great Lakes beyond. Her extensive reporting on the issue won her national and state honors, including a national “Best of Gannett” award for specialty reporting, an enterprise reporting award from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, and a spot news award from the Milwaukee Press Club. Campbell is also co-author of “Beyond Earth Day: Fulfilling the Promise,” with the late Earth Day founder, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson (University of Wisconsin Press, 2002)
Brian DeJong explores the history of Presbyterianism in Wisconsin by focusing on several key figures in the development Presbyterian churches in the area. In 1821, the Stockbridge Mohican Indians relocated to the Fox River area, just north of Appleton. These Indians had been under the Christian ministries of David Brainer, Jonathan Edwards, and John Sergeant in Massachusetts. They eventually moved to the eastern shore of Lake Winnebago. The Rev. Jesse Miner came to minister among them in 1825. Later, Mr. Cutting Marsh served among them as well. Rev. DeJong also describes the ministries of Rev. Moses Ordway and Stephen Peet in Green Bay and beyond and Pieter Zonne in what is known today as Cedar Grove. Overall, we gain a sense of the pioneering mindset and strong commitment to missions and church planting among these early Wisconsin Presbyterians.
