As volunteer searchers try to locate all of teen girl Sade Robinson's remains, a gruesome discovery... this time, at a remote, tree-lined stretch of beach along Lake Michigan. Just after 7:30 a.m., someone walking along a South Milwaukee water line discovered an arm and torso. The remains washed ashore about a quarter mile away from a nearby apartment complex. Residents watched as officers carried a body bag down the cliff to recover the body parts. Police have continued their search using a sonar detection boat to scour the lake. During their investigations, police discovered Maxwell Anderson had a “sex dungeon” in the basement of his West Milwaukee home, according to a law enforcement source. Cops found a ‘sex sling', restraints, and handcuffs. A close friend of Anderson's said that on a visit to Anderson's home last year, he noticed a large hole in the ground about 5 feet long by 6 feet deep. Anderson said he was working on an underground basement, despite having a large basement in the home already. Neighbors say the basement in the home had small windows that were always covered, so you could not see inside. Police also found gas cans in the garage, and blood in several areas, including on bedding and the wall of a stairwell leading to the basement. After initial DNA tests, an amended probable cause affidavit reveals the blood is not Sade Robinson's. If there's a healing modality that can bring up some polarizing opinions… it's homeopathy. Some say it's incredibly effective (even where all else fails), some scoff it off as nothing but placebo. Madeline, 13, has been missing since Monday morning when her mom's boyfriend dropped the teen off near the Peace United Methodist Church, a few blocks from Hunters Creek Middle School in Orlando. At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Madeline's mom goes to pick her up and finds that Madeline never reported to school. Police started canvassing the area, looking for any witnesses or surveillance video. Later that evening, police called in bloodhounds. The dog did an extensive search but did not provide any results about her whereabouts. The last person to see Madeline Soto before she vanished, was the mom's boyfriend Steven Stearns. He is now under arrest for sexual battery and possession of child sexual abuse material. As part of the investigation into the whereabouts of Madeline, Orange County Sheriff's Office Detectives forensically examined Stephan Stearns' cell phone and discovered disturbing images. Looking into the phone's data, detectives uncovered attempts to delete evidence from the device as well. The Orange County Sheriff's Office is still actively investigating Madeline Soto's disappearance and 37-year-old Stephan Sterns is now the prime suspect. School shooter Ethan Crumbley opened fire in a Michigan school, killing four students. He pled guilty to all charges and is now serving life in prison. His parents, James and Jennifer Crumpley, are also charged with involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors say they should have been aware of their son's mental health and should not have made it possible for him to have access to weapons. The parents' trials are expected to begin later this month, but now Jennifer Crumbley has asked a judge to dismiss three witnesses who say their testimony could prejudice a jury. A judge has ruled, however, that two of the witnesses will be allowed to testify, with a narrow focus. The jury will also be allowed to see surveillance video from the school. EMMA WATERS OF THE HERITAGE FOUNDATION JOINS DAWN LIVE! EMMA EXPANDS ON HER LATEST COLUMN FOCUSED ON US SURROGACY AND THE MARKET SINCE THE ABORTION RULING... America's Rent-A-Womb Industry Lures An Alarming Number Of Chinese NationalsChina not only owns a disproportionate amount of American debt, but a new report reveals it also rents a disproportionate number of American wombs. In July, researchers using data from the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology Clinic Outcome Reporting System found that Chinese nationals make up the largest percentage of foreign surrogacy contracts in the United States. This report — in the journal Fertility and Sterility, which is published on behalf of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine — compared the demographics of domestic and international intended parents. The latter category refers to men and women who are foreign nationals but come to the United States to hire an American surrogate to bear their child(ren). The rent-a-womb industry is disproportionately fueled by Chinese nationals (13.4 percent), followed by France (2.9 percent). Of these foreign nationals, which come mainly from China, many are men over the age of 42 (33.9 percent compared to 26.2 percent of domestic intended parents). They are also far more likely than prospective domestic parents (roughly 74 percent as opposed to 54 percent) to use preimplantation genetic testing. This allows intended parents to select the “ideal” embryo based on the child's sex, health, lack of genetic anomalies, and even eye, hair, and skin color. While sex-based abortion is illegal in some states, preimplantation genetic testing provides intended parents with an effective workaround. Read more from Emma on "The Federalist"... Steve Portigal is an experienced user researcher and author of two books, "Interviewing Users" and "Doorbells Danger, and Dead Batteries". Steve is a passionate advocate for the value of user research, and ensuring that people can find out compelling insights from their users. He's recently re-released a 10th-anniversary edition of "Interviewing Users", and we spoke about some themes from the book and how to make an impact with user research. Episode highlights: 1. Some people are still wary of user research, or think they don't need it, but it remains as important as ever It can be tempting for founders to think they know exactly what they need, rely on feedback from customer-facing teams, or not speak to anyone until they've already built the thing they want to build. Feedback from sales teams and founders is an incredibly important vector, but should only be the start of the discussion never the end. 2. Continuous discovery and point-in-time research both have a place in a researcher's armoury There are methodological constraints to continuous research, alongside the difficulty of finding the time and buy-in to do it but, on the other hand, it can be incredibly impactful to have rapid research tightly coupled to the product team. On the other hand, well-planned up-front research can still help you to find truly disruptive insights for your company. Do both! 3. We all have cognitive biases - we should accept that and be honest with ourselves about their effects People look at the word "bias" and worry about the negative connotations, but "bias" just represents how our brains are wired. Cognitive biases will affect how we interview people, and we should do our best to counteract their effect and improve on getting better (even if we're not perfect). 4. The best research has a tangible impact rather than being research for research's sake It can be a heavy burden to bear if all of your well-planned and well-executed research ends up having no effect on decision-making at all. It's important not to get downhearted, and work out ways to build actionable, accessible repositories to enable your stakeholders to make the best decisions possible. 5. There are a lot of similarities between good user research and improv We don't need to be able to create 45-minute plays off the cuff, and knowing when to stick to our interview plans and when to deviate from the script, enables us to get to the real generative insights that we need from our users and find out what we don't know we don't know. Buy "Interviewing Users (2nd edition)" "Interviewing people is a skill that most professionals who do research assume they already possess. But not everyone knows how to ask questions well. Expert researcher Steve Portigal updates his classic Interviewing Users to provide fresh guidance on interviewing techniques, as well as new content. This edition includes a new foreword by Jamika D. Burge and features two new chapters: one about analysis and synthesis and sharing research results, and another about ensuring that your user research efforts will have an impact on your organization. There are seven new short essays (we call them sidebars) from guest contributors. Plus, you'll find updated examples, stories, and tips for leading interviews, and new sections about bias, remote research, ResearchOps, planning research, and research logistics. Teen Willard Miller pleaded guilty to the murder of his Spanish teacher Nohema Graber and now a judge has sentenced him to life in prison. Iowa law does not permit juveniles to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, so Miller, 17, will serve a minimum of 35 years before he is eligible for parole. Willard Noble Chaiden Miller and Jeremy Everett Goodale were accused of killing 66-year-old Nohema Graber. The boys were students at Fairfield High School in Fairfield, where Graber had been teaching Spanish since 2012. Police found Graber's remains on November 3 at Chautauqua Park in Fairfield. A tipster led investigators to the teens. Police say social media evidence ties both suspects to Graber's death. According to a criminal complaint, in a social media exchange, the teens appeared to know specific details regarding Graber's death, including how the teacher died, and the motive. Information on a specific motive has not been publicly released. Investigators obtained search warrants for both suspects' homes and found clothing that appeared to have blood on them. A witness who knew the suspects told police the suspects were seen at the park on November 3. Prosecutors said Miller was upset about a grade and had been seen arguing with her about it. In this episode I chat with Jason Josephiac, Senior Vice President and Research Consultant at Meketa Investment Group. Jason has largely spent his career in the institutional allocation space, first in manager research at United Technology's pension and now on the consulting side of the table. Given this background, I spend the first half of the conversation trying to peel back the layers of how Jason thinks allocators should attack the portfolio construction process. This includes his views on the risks of LDI, portable alpha in theory versus practice, and why he prefers to view the world in an absolute risk / absolute return framework. In the back half of the conversation we discuss Meketa's Risk Managed Strategies framework, with its three buckets of first responders, second responders, and diversifiers. We cover topics such as long volatility, managed futures, and what actually constitutes a diversifier. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Jason Josephiac.

Tanya, Angie and Mary Ellen speak with Ashley Bernal, Director of Research and Impact for ProInspire. Ashley was the Research Consultant for a City Bar report that made recommendations about diversifying and strengthening the pipeline to the legal profession. Ashley helped us understand the findings of the report. She also talked to us about some of the hierarchies in the educational system that work against DEIB. And we talked about the way that students fall out of the legal pipeline because legal education is often designed to be unsupportive. Classes have resumed at the University of Idaho. It's been two weeks since four students were found stabbed to death inside their home and seemingly little progress has been made in finding the killer. Even though security has been tightened on campus, many students are not returning, preferring to complete the semester through remote learning. Meanwhile, investigators are sifting through more than 700 tips, 100 pieces of evidence, and 4,000 photos looking for evidence. Amy Mihaljevic was just 10 years old when she went missing. She told friends at school the day she disappeared that she was going with someone to buy her mom a surprise gift. Eyewitnesses reported seeing Amy speaking with a white male, at a local ice cream shop and then leaving with him through a parking lot. Later police discover that Mihaljevic and other girls in the area had been contacted by telephone by the abductor. The estimated 30-something-year-old man arranged to meet Mihaljevic after school. Just over three months later, Amy's body was found by a jogger in a farm field in a nearby town. Investigators say it appears the little girl's body was most likely dumped shortly after her abduction. Mihaljevic dies from a combination of stab wounds to the neck and a blow to her head. Some of the things that were known to be with or on Mihaljevic that day have never been found: the boots Amy was wearing, a denim backpack, a binder with "Buick, Best in Class" written on it, and turquoise earrings in the shape of horse heads. McKenna Brown, a teen hockey star, commits suicide after alleged bullying by three hockey teammates. The group of teens had been friends for years, but that changed when Brown asked one of the girls if it would be ok for her to begin talking with that girl's former boyfriends. The girl said yes, but her actions over the next few days proved it was far from fine. The girls allegedly began harassing Brown via text messages. Even after Brown apologized the attacks continues. The teammate encouraged others to cut ties with McKenna and “leave her without a single friend.” The bullies also reportedly shared deeply private information about Brown's sexual assault with other members of the hockey team. Within hours, Cheryl Brown would find her daughter dead on the bedroom floor. Since the bullying came to light, the three teammates have been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation into what happened. The Lightning High School Hockey League launched a probe, as did the Statewide Amateur Hockey of Florida, and USA Hockey hired outside counsel to perform another review. The girls are appealing their suspension. Joining Nancy Grace Today: Cheryl Brown - Victim's Mother Hunter Brown - Victim's Father, Lieutenant - Palm Harbor Fire Rescue David W. How can we understand the processes through which political leaders, god-men, stars of all kinds, and big or small deities mingle together in the public sphere? And what are the consequences of deifying politicians, or opening politics to the gods? In this episode, we discuss South Asian politicians who are treated like gods, and gods who enter politics. We focus, in other words, on political deification, a phenomenon that is in display across South Asia, but also beyond. In India, both national and regional parties work to reclaim the symbols of Hinduism, in order to compete with the discourse and politics of Hindu Nationalism, espoused by the incumbent government. As a result, both Hindu nationalism and its counter-cultures are now squarely placed in the domain of religious symbols, mythological narratives, and deified political figures. Similarly, deified and martyred figures of past conflicts now serve as national icons that cohere the polity in both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In this episode, Kenneth Bo Nielsen is joined by Moumita Sen, Michael Stausberg, Praskanva Sinharay and Sharika Thiranagama to discuss the phenomenon of political deification in South-Asia. Their discussion draws on a new thematic issue of the journal Religion, edited by Sen and Nielsen: Religion, volume 52, number 4. Tyler and Sarah Schmidt and their 6-year-old daughter, Lula, die after an assault inside their camping tent. 9-year-old Arlo Schmidt survives, running to another campsite for help. Autopsies show the family members were shot, stabbed and strangled. Police say the man who killed the family was himself, camping nearby. In fact, the campsite to which Schmidt ran, belonged to the killer's family. His mother called 911. Investigators say Anthony Sherwin of La Vista, Nebraska carried out the attack, Police later found Sherwin's body with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. Sherwin's mother, Cecilia Sherwin, released a statement saying she and her family "refuse to believe the news" that their family member is a murderer. The body of Margaret "Maggie" Sniegowski is found by a farmer, dumped along a central Indiana highway. Police say the teen had been dead for several days. At the time, however, no one knew who the girl was and it would be 20 years before the 17-year-old was identified, thanks to DNA technology. Boone County Coroner Justin Sparks said an autopsy ruled her cause of death as undetermined. Sheriff Mike Nielsen said there were indications Sniegowski may have been strangled. The focus now is to find who killed her. A family vacation to Bali turns deadly. Sheila von Wiese-Mack is found bludgeoned to death inside a suitcase. The socialite's 25-year-old daughter Heather Mack and her 21-year-old then-boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer are charged and convicted by an Indonesian court. Police say Schaefer bludgeoned von Wiese-Mack with a bowl and then he and Mack stuffed her body into a suitcase and attempted to flee the scene. Heather Mack was pregnant at the time and gave birth to a daughter in prison. When she turned two, she was placed with a foster family in Bali. Now, Mack is back in prison this time in Illinois. Mack said she was nervous about returning to the States, and what could happen to her daughter, once she is exposed to the media attention surrounding her mother. A judge has ruled the girl will remain with the Indonesian woman who raised her in Bali. A Philadelphia family is suing TikTok after their 10-year-old daughter dies trying a video challenge posted on the social media site. The challenge, called the 'blackout challenge," encourages users to asphyxiate themselves, pass out and regain consciousness, while on camera. Nylah Anderson was found unconscious in her mom's bedroom closet hung from a purse strap. Tawainna Anderson, Nylah mother, says the video platform is negligent and has a 'defective design.' Nylah saw the challenge on the app's 'For You' page. According to the lawsuit, the company's algorithm sent the video to the 10-year-old. Last year, a 12-year-old boy died trying the same challenge. He used a shoelace to choke himself. Anderson says TikTok is aware of the dangers, but has made no efforts to change. New details released in the murder investigation of slain Delphi girls, Abby Williams and Libby German. The Murder Sheet podcast made public a redacted search warrant submitted by an FBI agent explaining why there was probably cause to search the property of Ron Logan. The girls' bodies were found on Logan's property. The court documents state “a large amount of blood was lost by the victims at the crime scene,” meaning the killer would have been covered in blood. The warrant also states the victims didn't have any defense wounds, but some articles of clothing were taken from them and removed from the scene. The agent suggests the scene had been staged. Murder charges against Suzanne Morphew's husband, Barry, have been dismissed. The Colorado mom has been missing since Mother's Day of 2020. Prosecutors filed a motion to dismissed without prejudice — meaning charges can be refiled at a later date. Police claim they are close to finding Suzanne Morphew's body, but the weather and snowpack are delaying searches. Prosecutors wrote in their latest motion that they have zeroed in on a “remote and mountainous” area currently covered by five feet of snow, near the Morphews' home. During an April 8 hearing, the judge barred 12 of the prosecution's 14 witnesses from testifying as expert witnesses. Prosecutors wrote in Tuesday's motion that some of their strongest evidence — phone and GPS data in addition to truck data — was also excluded from Barry Morphew's planned trial.
