July 4, 1954. Bay Village, Ohio. 31-year old Marilyn Reese Sheppard is bludgeoned to death inside her bedroom and her 30-year old husband, Sam Sheppard, is injured after claiming he was attacked by an intruder. Since Sam was known for conducting extramarital affairs, police believe that he fabricated the story and was responsible for killing his wife, so he is charged with Marilyn's murder. After being convicted at what is described as “The Trial of the Century”, Sam receives a sentence of life imprisonment, but there is great concern about the sensationalistic and biased media coverage surrounding the case. Sam spends nearly ten years in prison before his conviction is overturned and after the case makes it all the way to the United States Supreme Court, he is granted a second trial and winds up being acquitted. Decades later, Sam's supporters attempt to posthumously exonerate him by presenting evidence that points towards another suspect, but the crime remains shrouded in mystery. To commemorate the nine-year anniversary of “The Trail Went Cold”, we will be releasing our very first special three-part episode about one of the most controversial murder cases of all time. In our previous two episodes, we covered Sam Sheppard's two criminal trials and his posthumous civil trial and this week on Part Three, we will conclude the series by analyzing and breaking down the case. In this episode, Tom and Simon engage in a dynamic conversation spanning continents and intriguing topics. Simon begins by sharing his unexpected gym visit in Malaysia, a stark contrast to Tom's chilly day in Scotland. The discussion shifts to Tom's upcoming book, 'The Bombing of Edinburgh and Leith, 1939-1942,' exploring historical crime scene photography and justice. They delve into the clever, yet ultimately flawed, 1973 casino scam in France, reflecting on the enduring appeal of sophisticated criminal schemes. The notorious activities of Arthur Thompson, a violent Glasgow criminal, spark a candid discussion on police informants and media glorification of criminals. They compare Thompson's operations to the infamous Kray twins, highlighting the complex relationships between criminals and law enforcement. The episode also revisits the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege, shedding light on the SAS's public debut and the political courage of Margaret Thatcher. The conversation takes a somber turn with the unresolved Templeton Woods murders in Dundee, emphasizing the distinct differences between the victims and the investigative challenges faced. Finally, they touch on the tragic miscarriage of justice in the Bay Village murder, paralleling it with popular culture representations. Throughout, Tom and Simon examine how power, greed, and the press influence criminal dynamics and law enforcement responses. This episode is a compelling mix of firsthand accounts, historical insights, and thoughtful analyses, perfect for true crime aficionados.00:00 Introduction and Greetings00:18 Simon's Gym Surprise01:04 Tom's New Book Announcement03:13 Deep Dive into Casino Crimes07:56 FBI Office Break-In17:20 Arthur Thompson Senior and Glasgow Crime24:45 The Ruthless Nature of Ferris and Thompson26:30 Historical Parallels: Percy Sillitoe and Gang Violence27:17 Proportional Force in Police Raids29:25 The Bay Village Murder Case33:35 The Iranian Embassy Siege40:44 Templeton Woods Murders and Operation Trinity48:27 The World's End Murders and Angus Sinclair Hosted on Acast. Modern optics give birders the opportunities to feel as though they are up close and personal with the bird we watch, but nothing we experience through binoculars compares to the experience with birds that wildlife rehabbers get to enjoy. Rehabilitators not only get to know birds on the individual level, but they get broader insight into the impacts of humans on bird populations as well. Tim Jasinski is a Wildlife Rehabilitation Specialist at the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center in Bay Village, Ohio. He oins us to talk about his experiences working with birds near Cleveland. Also, Purple Martins will be heading northward soon, but the number of landlords waiting for them continues to decline.  Subscribe to the podcast at Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts and please leave a rating or a review if you are so inclined! Crime is history and sometimes history is crime. One single event changed the course of history. In 1942, the world was in the throes of the Second World War. The Great Depression created a kind of desperation Americans hadn't seen and men and boys were shipping out by the droves. Two historic events intersected on Saturday, November 28, 1942, Holy Cross and Boston College played before 41,000 college football fans at Fenway Park. Underdogs Holy Cross destroyed any hopes of The Eagles going to the Sugar Bowl or any other bowl, taking the undefeated team down, 55-12. BC staff and players were so dazed by what happened, they canceled their planned celebration at the famed Cocoanut Grove. They would not know what hand fate dealt them that night. That night, the nightclub - almost double its legal capacity - went up in flames. The Cocoanut Grove was a tinderbox, given the flagrant negligence of its owner, Barnett “Barney” Welansky, self-proclaimed pal of the mob and local politicians, including Mayor Maurice J. Tobin, cut corners and ignored common sense public safety. Four hundred and ninety-two* people died as a result of the Cocoanut Grove Fire. It was due to absolute negligence by the club owner but, today, 81 years later, the actual cause of the fire remains undetermined. Boston hospitals were overwhelmed by the rate at which the injured were arriving. Doctors and nurses and medical professions were pushed to the brink on how to effectively care for the gravely injured. There is a sliver of a silver lining, a quote from Professor Barbara Poremba's recent article in The Salem (Mass) News and a member of the Cocoanut Grove Memorial Committee. We say let no one die in vain. That's difficult given that so many of the casualties were young people just beginning their adult lives, but what emerged from the ashes of the Coconut Grove Fire revolutionized medical treatments for treating burn victims and people affected by this kind of trauma. Sweeping changes to building codes and safety regulations came as a direct result of the massive loss of life at Cocoanut Grove. The 2021 documentary, Six Locked Doors, takes us inside the events of that night, accounts from survivors, and the people who played a role in the worst nightclub fire in US history.*according to the The Cocoanut Grove Memorial Committee, 490 people died in the fire.Crime of the Truest KindCreated, written and hosted by Anngelle WoodSupport the showFollow Instagram | Facebook | Twitter X | TikTok | Threads | YouTube Blue SkyFor show notes and source information, please visit CrimeoftheTruestKind.comBecome a patron: Patreon.com/crimeofthetruestkind Music included in episodes from Joe "onlyone" Kowalski - Joe Got A New Heart FundDug McCormack MATH GHOSTSAndrew King

TIPS: 440-871-1234 The thing is, that October 27, 1989, was just like any other day in northeast Ohio up until those first reports of a missing girl from Bay Village hit the news around 10 o'clock. The city and the citizens felt like they had been punched in the gut. How could one of their own be taken right out from under the noses of the public, across from the police station nonetheless? As the days progressed, new information was being released regularly, with the most important being that of this phone caller who had potentially lured Amy to the plaza that Friday afternoon. The information about this phone call was given by two of Amy's friends, who had been told of the plan on the meeting day. In speaking with Chief Spaetzel, these kids were able to provide a few very significant details, one of the most essential being that Amy was told she had $45 to spend and that if there was any money left over, she could also get a gift. The trial for the violent murder of Marilyn Sheppard was considered to be the OJ Simpson case of its day, both in its public spectacle and in its unconventional journey through the law system. On July 4th, 1954, Merylin Sheppard was found brutally murdered in her Bay Village home in Ohio. The mother, who was four months pregnant at the time was bludgeoned to death. Hit 27 times by an unknown object.  Her husband Sam Sheppard survived the incident, claiming to have fought with a bushy-haired intruder and being rendered unconscious twice in his efforts. He would both be found guilty and innocent of her murder in separate trials over the years, and in this episode, we will see how the media, court system, and odd circumstances put an innocent man behind bars.  Hosted By: Cameron Jones, Nicole DeAnda Music By: Cameron Jones   --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/imnotcrazypod/support

On July 4th, 1954, Marilyn Reese Sheppard was found brutally murdered inside her home in Bay Village, Ohio. Her husband's story seemed unbelievable, and the police quickly made Sam Sheppard their number one suspect. Sam was convicted of murder, then acquitted years later. His guilt or innocence is still a hotly debated topic. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the infamous unsolved murder of Marilyn Sheppard and the subsequent trials of her husband Sam. Sam's story was that he woke up to hear his wife screaming and was knocked unconscious in a fight with a bushy-haired intruder. The police didn't buy it and when they learned of Sam's infidelity, they used it as the motive for him to kill his wife. A window washer who told the police he thought Marilyn was attractive implicated himself in the murder over the years. But, what is the real story?
