Emilio, Madeline, and Julian are joined by drummer Rob Mitzner to begin a new episode cycle on films featuring winners of the Best Supporting Actor or Actress Oscars, with a "View-nanimous" entry on director Damien Chazelle's 2014 breakthrough film, "Whiplash." Starring Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons, the latter of whom won the requisite Oscar, the film memorably portrays student drummer Andrew Neiman's struggle to impress his autocratic band instructor, Terence Fletcher, and the group filter their own experiences as musicians through their aptitude for cinematic detail to assess the film's spectrum of musical and emotional realism. While "Whiplash" was a hit upon release and highly lauded during awards season, it has always been polarizing among musicians, and some of those differing views are articulated in this very conversation. Plus, did anyone in the group ever have a teacher like Fletcher? Is Miles Teller's drumming accurate? And how do we interpret that unforgettable ending?
Crédits musique :- Intoit - Stan Getz- Caravan - John Wasson- Opening - Justin Hurwitz- First Nassau Band Rehearsal - Tim Simonec- Extrait "What's your name ?" - Damien Chazelle
Come in and find out! Hey there, watchers! So, grab your popcorn and join us as we chat about the highs, lows, and everything in between of this cinematic rollercoaster!
Whiplash follows the pursuit of greatness of the main character: Andrew Neiman who is a drummer in a college jazz band as he is pushed to his limits by his instructor Terrence Fletcher. Released in 2014, written and directed by Damien Chazelle, this movie stars Miles Teller as Andrew Neiman and JK Simmons as Terrence Fletcher
Another milestone has been reached! Welcome to the 150th edition of the Cinema Effect podcast. To mark the occasion we decided to once again meet up to record in-person, actually give YouTube viewers something to look at with some "high production" video content, and of course review a beloved film of the last decade. This is the first time we've covered a film by Damien Chazelle on the show, but we are all big fans of his work. And Whiplash was one hell of a debut feature. Starring J.K. Simmons as the incredibly memorable music instructor Fletcher, we witness the shocking (and admittedly sometimes hilarious) abuse of his students, including Miles Teller's Andrew Neiman. Is Andrew able to overcome the torment and push himself to realise his dream of becoming one of the greatest drummers in history? Or will he fail into mediocrity? That is of course, if he should even be pursuing drumming in the first place. If you haven't seen this movie before, definitely do yourself a favour. In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the 2014 American drama film "Whiplash", written and directed by Damien Chazelle, about the relationship between an ambitious and talented jazz drummer, Andrew Neiman (played by Miles Teller) - a first year student at the prestigious Schaffer Conservatory in New York City - and the perfectionist Conservatory Studio bandleader, Terence Fletcher (played by J.K. Simmons) - who is notorious for pushing his students to their limits and subjecting them to psychological and emotional abuse. At first, Miles is a well-mannered, caring, joyful young man who likes going to the movies with his father, Jim Neiman (played by Paul Reiser) and who noticeably shy and awkward around Nicole (played by Melissa Benoist), who is a movie theater concessionist who becomes Andrew's girlfriend after he finally asks he out on a date. However, the more intense and visceral Andrew's experiences with his bandleader, Terence Fletcher, are, and the more obsessed and consumed with achieving perfection Andrew becomes, the more that he sacrifices his sanity as well as his relationships with those who care about him the most in order to become the best jazz drummer that he can be. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message
