The live-action musical La La Land was primed to take over the 89th Academy Awards as the frontrunner for Best Picture, and its chances of winning multiple awards included Best Original Song, where two tunes from the movie were nominated. On this episode, learn more about the men who created those songs -- Justin Hurwitz, Benj Pasek, and Justin Paul -- and the writers of the other three nominated songs. Lin-Manuel Miranda earned his first Oscar nomination that year, as did Justin Timberlake for the most popular song of 2016.

Damien Chazelle's "Babylon" was one of 2022's largest and most ambitious films. It's fair to say it split everyone who saw it down the middle with their opinions. But an area most could agree on was the film's technical craft. Two frequent Chazelle collaborators, composer Justin Hurwitz and costume designer Mary Zophres were kind enough to spend some time going in-depth on their work for Chazelle's latest. First up is my interview with Hurwitz, where he breaks down the extensive layering of the score, how the film pushed him out of his comfort zone to try new things, if he's open to working with anyone outside Damien Chazelle, and more. Then we have Zoe Rose Bryant's interview with Mary Zophres, where she breaks down the film's elaborate costumes, working with all the different department heads on this massive project, her reaction to some of the criticisms thrown at the film's anachronisms, and more. Feliz escucha.

With the current release of Justin Hurwitz's new score for 'Babylon' in cinemas, Matthew Sweet looks at the theme of decadence in the movies through examples of its music. The programme includes notes by Debbie Wiseman for 'Wilde', Jen Anderson for 'Pandora's Box'; 'Caligula' by Bruno Nicolai, Nino Rota's 'La Dolce Vita', Jonny Greenwood's 'Inherent Vice' and Dustin O'Halloran's 'Marie Antoinette'. Philippe Sarde scores with 'La Grande Bouffe' and Craig Armstrong with 'The Great Gatsby'. The programme also features music by John Barry and Georgio Moroder, and the Classic Score of the week is Jerry Goldsmith's 'LA Confidential'. To round things off, a decadent helping of 'Babylon'.

We have a bonus episode for you today, as two friends of the podcast return (separately, we should say) to discuss their work together on the extraordinary Babylon. Director Damien Chazelle and composer Justin Hurwitz have worked their magic once again, bringing to life a tale of decadence, depravity, and outrageous excess in 1920s Hollywood. What we do is share the interview with Justin first, as that goes into great detail about the music; then we'll get an overview from Damien about the score and the movie as a whole.
