In this conversation, Romy Alexandra discusses the concept of experiential learning, sharing her personal journey and insights into how experiential education can transform traditional learning methods. She emphasizes the importance of engaging learners through experience, reflection, and action, and explores the experiential learning cycle and various learning styles. The discussion also highlights the significance of reflection in the learning process and how it can be made more engaging. Romy shares practical strategies for facilitators to enhance their teaching methods and the need to bridge theory and practice in education.   Experiential learning is about learning through experience, reflection, thinking, and acting. Reflection is essential for deep learning and should be varied to keep it engaging. Learning styles are preferences that can change over time and should not box learners in. The experiential learning cycle can be applied to all aspects of life, not just formal education. Peer learning is often more impactful than facilitator-led instruction. Creating a safe space for reflection can lead to powerful insights and learning outcomes. Facilitators should strive to engage all learning styles in their teaching methods. The journey of learning is continuous and can spiral into deeper understanding and action. In this episode, my guest is Dr. Gerald Pollack, a renowned professor of bioengineering at the University of Washington and founding editor-in-chief of the journal Water. Dr. Pollack is widely recognized for his groundbreaking discoveries in cell biology and water science, particularly his identification of the “fourth phase” of water—also known as EZ (exclusion zone) water. His research offers a radical rethinking of how water functions in biological systems, challenging classical theories. Today we explore the foundations of Dr. Pollack's theory, emphasizing the influential research of the late Gilbert Ling. We begin by examining key topics such as the existence of the cell membrane, evidence challenging ATP as the cell's energy currency, and the disproofs of the membrane-pump theory. We also question conventional models of the atom and consider how Dr. Pollack's findings connect to these paradigm shifts. Finally, we discuss the discoveries from Dr. Pollack's lab and their far-reaching implications for biology and human health.Full Show Notes Here. Follow The Whole Health Podcast on Instagram @wholehealthpodTimestamps 00:00:00 Introduction 00:00:17 Welcome 00:02:09 Sponsor: Biojit 00:03:26 Dr. Gerald Pollack00:03:47 Love for Science 00:09:35 Questioning the Textbook and Our Understanding of Water 00:15:07 Jerry's Teaching Methods 00:17:00 Herold Hillman: Does the Cell Membrane Exist?00:22:13 Gilbert Ling 00:23:26 Ling's Theory of Water 00:26:26 Writing Cells, Gels, and the Engines of Life 00:27:27 The Association-Induction Hypothesis 00:30:12 Independent Disproofs Against the Membrane-Pump Theory 00:31:28 Podolsky & Morales: There is no “High Energy Phosphate Bond” in ATP00:35:24 ATP as a Cardinal Absorbent 00:36:12 Ling's Stacked Dipole Theory and Why it is Not Accurate 00:40:45 Gilbert Ling's Inventions, MRI, etc. 00:41:49 EZ Water Electrical Charge 00:43:56 EZ Creating a Battery and its Implications for Cellular Energetics 00:46:02 Infrared Light Powers the Battery 00:51:12 Arturo Herrera, Human Photosynthesis 00:54:51 Polywater 00:57:47 EZ Structure vs. Bulk Water Structure 01:03:34 Infrared Light's Role in EZ Formation 01:04:20 Hydrogen Bonds SImply a Conjecture 01:05:38 Questioning the Structure of the Atom 01:16:37 EZ Projection of a Meter Long (39 inch)01:21:39 Deuterium and Deuterium Depleted Water 01:23:20 Phase Transitions Within the Cell01:27:15 Continuous Flow Occurs Through Hydrophilic Tubes Immersed in Water 01:36:41 The Driver of Blood Circulation Beyond the Heart 01:42:53 Implications for Human Health 01:55:42 Kangen Water Support the showPodcast Website Whole Health InstagramMy Website My InstagramMy X

Pedagogy & Design: Clarifying Teaching Methods in D&T

Talking D&T

Send me a message.Drawing a clear line between how we teach and what we teach seems straightforward—until you step into a Design & Technology classroom. In this thought-provoking exploration of pedagogy in D&T education, I unpack why teachers often blur the boundaries between teaching methods and curriculum content, sometimes without realising it.The heart of effective D&T education lies in developing students' design and technology capability, but this requires navigating complex terrain. When we structure lessons around design processes without explicitly highlighting those processes as strategies students can adopt independently, we risk creating what researcher Bob McCormick calls "the ritual of the design project." Students follow prescribed steps without developing true capability—they complete the activities without gaining the metacognitive awareness needed to transfer these approaches to new contexts.Through practical examples like the 6-3-5 collaborative design technique and tool demonstrations, I illustrate the difference between clear pedagogical separation (when demonstrating cutting techniques) and problematic blending (when teaching design processes). This distinction matters profoundly: when students don't recognise a design strategy as a transferable tool they can apply independently, their development as designers is limited. They become dependent on teacher-led frameworks rather than developing autonomous design thinking. For D&T educators, this episode offers an opportunity to reflect on your teaching practice. Are you explicitly highlighting design strategies as transferable tools? Do your students recognise when they're learning processes they can apply independently? How might restructuring your lessons enhance students' ability to develop genuine capability rather than just following teacher-led frameworks?Acknowledgement:Some of the supplementary content for this podcast episode was crafted with the assistance of Claude, an AI language model developed by Anthropic. How to be a teacher everyone remembers? You teach like Michel Thomas! Michel Thomas was a polyglot language teacher, author, and Holocaust survivor. He was born in Poland in 1914 and grew up in Germany. He fled to France before the outbreak of World War II, and was later arrested by the Nazis and sent to a series of concentration camps. After the war, he moved to the United States, where he began teaching languages. Michel Thomas developed his own method of language teaching, which is based on the idea that students can learn a new language quickly and efficiently by breaking it down into its component parts and building it up again. He emphasized on the use of repetition and association to help students learn quickly and effectively. He believed that traditional grammar-based language instruction was ineffective, and that students should learn a language by listening and speaking it, rather than by analyzing and memorizing grammar rules. Michel Thomas's language teaching method is widely known and popular. He recorded a series of audio courses, which have been used by millions of students worldwide. He also wrote several books on his method of language teaching. He passed away in 2005, but his method continues to be used and praised by many language learners and teachers. How to be a teacher everyone remembers? You teach like Anne Sullivan! Anne Sullivan was an American teacher, best known for being the instructor and lifelong companion of Helen Keller, a blind and deaf student. Sullivan was born in 1866 and became blind at an early age due to an eye infection. She attended the Perkins School for the Blind and later graduated from the Cambridge School for Young Ladies. In 1887, she was chosen to be Helen Keller's instructor, and she began working with Keller when the latter was six years old. Anne Sullivan used the "manual alphabet" to teach Helen Keller how to communicate, and she helped her student to learn to read and write using Braille. Sullivan also taught Keller how to speak using the "oral method" which is based on the idea that the child must be taught to associate the sound and the movement of the lips with a particular word. Sullivan's method was based on the principles of the "oral method" and the "manual alphabet" which are used to teach the deaf and the blind. Anne Sullivan's work with Helen Keller was highly successful and it had a significant impact on the field of special education. Being present in the moment and staying open to whatever unfolds. We all want to lead lives and careers full of joy and fulfillment. Maggie Baird certainly has, and the key, she says, is to stay open to new possibilities and “let your passion lead.”Baird is an accomplished actress, improv teacher at the Groundlings Theater, mother to music sensations Billie Eilish and Phineas, and founder of Support and Feed, a nonprofit addressing food equity and the climate crisis. Through it all, she has embodied the improv principle of "Yes, and..." — being present in the moment and staying open to whatever unfolds. “I have done many things,” she says, “but I never approached any of them as a career change. They all came out of new interests and new experiences.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Baird joins host Matt Abrahams to explore the critical role of communication in developing a career, and how improv principles can help us engage, as Baird says, “From a place of open-heartedness, appreciation, [and] collaboration.”Episode Reference Links:Support And FeedEp.118 Maximizing your Personal Brand: Communicating Who You Are to Help Get What You WantEp.1 Speaking Without a Net: How to Master Impromptu CommunicationEp.9 Quick Think: How Being Present-Oriented Improves Communication Connect:Email Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00:00) IntroductionHost Matt Abrahams introduces guest Maggie Baird, actor and founder of Support and Feed.(00:00:53) Career Transitions Advice on embracing new opportunities without rigid planning.(00:01:45) Teaching and Confidence Through Improv Discovering improv and how teaching led to a new sense of confidence and creativity.(00:04:03) Improv as a Communication Tool The principles of improv and how they can enhance communication and collaboration.(00:05:45) Structure and Freedom in Improv How improv provides structure that frees individuals to speak spontaneously.(00:07:37) Teaching with Empathy Empathy in teaching, remembering what it's like to be a beginner, and avoiding jargon.(00:10:34) Advocacy in the Music Industry Using questions and collaboration to drive change in the music industry and other sectors.(00:13:18) Collaboration and Positive Change The importance of collaboration, positivity, and meeting people where they are to create change.(00:16:07) The Final Three QuestionsMaggie shares her next career change, a communicator she admires, and her ingredients for successful communication.(00:17:46) Conclusion (00:00) - Introduction (01:36) - Career Transitions (02:28) - Teaching and Confidence Through Improv (04:46) - Improv as a Communication Tool (06:28) - Structure and Freedom in Improv (08:20) - Teaching with Empathy (11:17) - Advocacy in the Music Industry (14:01) - Collaboration and Positive Change (16:50) - The Final Three Questions (18:29) - Conclusion

In today's episode, "Unlocking Potential: Non-Traditional Teaching Methods for Students with Severe Learning Challenges," we delve into the world of homeschooling children with intellectual disabilities who are often relegated to a perpetual elementary school experience. From addressing specific struggles in teaching a child with intellectual disabilities and adapting curriculum to understanding learning behaviors and incorporating life skills, this conversation will provide practical insights and tips for unlocking your child's full potential. Stay tuned as our guest and Empowering Homeschool Conversations co-host, Stephanie Buckwalter, uncovers ways to navigate the complexities of homeschooling children with severe learning challenges and to empower them to thrive beyond traditional expectations. Stephanie Buckwalter is a curriculum developer and the creator of the ELARP™ Method of homeschooling for students who are two or more years behind grade level in several core subjects, or simply stuck in perpetual kindergarten. She believes that the first step to homeschooling a special needs child is to assume intelligence. Once you realize there is more going on intellectually than your child can express, it opens up a whole new world of learning. Her family of five children has done homeschool, private school and public school (including the IEP process). In addition to homeschooling for over 18 years, Stephanie has taught classes locally and online, and helped start a robotics club, a classical education co-op and a special needs homeschool co-op. Her heart is to use her unique experience to help others experience success teaching their unique learners. “Making a conscious and intentional effort to tap into your own personal power and being courageous” is the way today's guest defines “teaching like yourself.” I'm talking with Dr. Gravity Goldberg, whom you might remember from a 2019 interview I did, which ended up being one of the most downloaded Truth for Teachers episodes ever. It's Episode 171, called “Teach like yourself: Why YOU are the person your students need most.” Gravity has over 20 years of teaching experience, including positions as a science teacher, reading specialist, third grade teacher, special educator, literacy coach, staff developer, assistant professor, educational consultant, and yoga teacher. Gravity holds a B.A. and M.Ed. from Boston College and a doctorate from Teachers College. As the founding director of Gravity Goldberg, LLC she leads a team that offers side-by-side coaching and workshops that focus on teachers as decision-makers and student-led instruction.  Since our last conversation, Gravity — who has authored 9 books on teaching — has released a new title called Active Learning: 40 Teaching Methods to Engage Students in Every Class and Every Subject, which she co-wrote with the late Barry Gilmore.  We touch a bit on that book and what Gravity's working on now, but I thought of this conversation as a “Teach Like Yourself, Revisited”. I wanted to know how her thinking has changed around this topic, and the role authentic teaching plays now. Listen in as we discuss: How “teaching like yourself” (making a conscious and intentional effort to tap into your own personal power and being courageous) is more important now than ever What Gravity has learned about authentic teaching and learning since publishing her book on that topic Has she changed her mind on anything? What would she add? How teachers can integrate engagement strategies in a way that feels authentic and meaningful, rather than just tossing something into their instructional day because they think (or are told) they should The impact of authenticity on students, and specific, practical ways we can make sure students are able to be their true, authentic selves in the classroom Click here to read the transcript and participate in the discussion.
