What is Stendhal syndrome? Stendhal's syndrome is a rare and unusual psychological disorder. It's a psychosomatic condition whereby certain people suffer from a rapid heartbeat, fainting or even hallucinations, when exposed to objects or works of art of great beauty. The condition takes its name from a famous French writer who experienced a similar state of intense emotion upon visiting Rome, Naples and Florence. Stendhal wrote about his visit to Florence's Santa Croce Basilica in a book entitled Naples and Florence: A journey from Milan to Reggio. Talvez um dia as derivas que acumulámos possam permitir outra leitura, como um esforço que fizemos para nos mantermos num estado de perfeita disponibilidade de forma a que um tempo que sufocava entre impossibilidades por fim se oferecesse margem para romper com esta música desgastante que nos cerca e nos domina até ao enjoo. Nem há quem nos belisque, e é tão raro ouvir articulada com uma respiração nervosa e vibrante alguma conjugação de palavras que seja capaz de nos perturbar ou sacudir. Muitas vezes esbarramos com nós próprios, cumprimentamo-nos com menos que um aceno, um olhar que nos poupa àquelas palavras que, de tão circunstanciais, quase dão cabo de nós, e parece que estamos de volta a algum desses convívios cada vez mais desnecessários e onde temos dificuldade em saber quantos somos, e porquê este infeliz número, de tal modo que receamos estar a subdividirmo-nos... Não seremos meras réplicas, sequelas num enredo sem saída?, e parece-nos que cada tipo aqui presente, chegando a sua vez, tem o cuidado de dizer apenas o que for mais previsível, de fazer unicamente os mais breves comentários banais e de aparentar ter aceitado aquele convite formal e passado porventura meio dia em viagem para vir dizer ou ouvir tão-só o que não seja de todo consequente. Nem sei se não li já isto algures. O Breton diz que, em matéria de revolta, nenhum de nós deveria precisar de antepassados. Mas este é o ponto que parece mais difícil, antes mesmo de as coisas sucederem, de os acontecimentos se precipitarem, quando ainda parecia que estava ao nosso alcance desencadear alguma ruptura decisiva. Alguns, mais tarde, irão fantasiar-se nos seus relatos ao ponto de dizer que, por estes dias, viviam já como se retirados do mundo. Em breve irá emergir toda uma literatura de auto-exoneração, mas ser-nos-á difícil acompanhar essas inversões, a dizermos alguma coisa a seu respeito, se nos parecia que o objectivo de cada um deles foi nada dizer ou fazer que seja digno de nota. "A vida de algumas pessoas pode ser tão sucintamente resumida que não passa de uma porta que bate ou de alguém que tosse numa rua escura a meio da noite", notava Bradbury. "Olha-se pela janela, a rua está vazia. Quem quer que tenha tossido já desapareceu." A consciência parece ter-se tornado mais um dos aspectos do negócio. Fomos perdendo o chão, nós para quem essa foi a nossa primeira leitura. Foi com esse olhar perdido que aprendemos as primeiras letras. Era uma espécie de deficiência que nos defendia da coisa seguinte. Íamos, mas sempre como por acaso, como se por distracção ou empurrados. Talvez venha a ser possível fazer uma história dos diferentes caminhos que levam à literatura, desde logo uma história que passe bem longe do mercado. Uma narrativa sobre gente que se despenhou ou precisou desesperadamente virar-se para outras épocas, outros lugares. Mas uns anos mais tarde, quando viemos à superfície, éramos nós os grandes iletrados, não percebíamos patavina da realidade em que estávamos metidos. As filas continuam a avançar, continuam a não ter fim. Caminhamos na sonolência de mundos contrários, como diria o outro. Cada vez teríamos mais dificuldade em reconhecermo-nos mesmo se esbarrássemos contra nós próprios num destes ajuntamentos. Vamos sendo corpos sem eco, isto numa sociedade em que, há mínima perturbação, se é alvo de um processo, disciplinar ou não, e muitas vezes o pior é não ser clara a natureza. Até podem obrigar-nos a aguardar aqui ou ali enquanto nos martirizamos apenas para acabarmos o dia levando para casa a notícia de que fomos promovidos. Mas nem para nós é muito certo aquilo em que andamos metidos. É difícil chegar aos 35 ou aos 40 anos se se for demasiado directo, sem que isso se torne para nós um motivo constante de luta. Começamos a ser interrompidos e interrogados, e ficamos a dever explicações a meio mundo. Talvez, por isso, tantos se preservem na absoluta sensaboria dos ditos e expressões que não levam a coisa nenhuma. "Todo o bom raciocínio ofende", como notou Stendhal, sublinhado por Beauvoir, que prossegue a ideia, adiantando que, perante uma opinião peremptória, uma verdade definitiva, as pessoas amedrontam-se. "Tal é vaidoso, egoísta, mau, cúpido; enunciar-vos-ão com complacência os seus defeitos; mas se vós concluís: 'É um homem mau', o vosso interlocutor protesta: 'Eu não disse isso'; e acrescenta, talvez: 'Apesar de tudo, o fundo é bom'. Assim, o homem aceita ser pintado com pequenas pinceladas cruéis, mas, se o forçais a recuar para contemplar o seu retrato em corpo inteiro, fraqueja, não quer resumir, não quer concluir (...) repugna-lhe tomar partido: Deus sabe até que consequências poderia arrastá-lo uma lógica muito rigorosa; agrada-lhe ouvir-se falar, sentir-se pensar (...) mas com a condição de os seus pensamentos não o comprometerem, de permanecerem numa penumbra propícia. De facto, os homens não acreditam no que dizem, e é isso o que lhes permite saltar com desembaraço de um plano de verdade para outro"... E se acreditassem? Sem a busca de um alto grau de exigência as palavras são menos do que nada. Tornam-se uma das piores formas de sujeira. Algures, Blanchot anotava: "Todo o escritor que, pelo acto em si de escrever, não é conduzido a pensar: 'Eu sou a revolução'... na realidade, não escreveu nada." In this bonus Thanksgiving episode I read an article entitled The Apostle Paul and the Introspective Conscience of the West by legendary New Testament scholar Krister Stendhal. Originally published in Swedish in 1960 (published in English as a chapter in his book Paul Among Jews and Gentiles), Stendhal argues that the west has missed the historical context in which Paul was writing. The western tradition, starting with Augustine and reaching its height with Luther, has assumed that Paul was extremely introspective and found relief from the guilt of his sin through the grace of Jesus. Stendhal argues that this isn't the case; based on several claims in Paul's letters that he was a devout, faithful, and upright Jew, there is little indication that Paul had a guilty conscience. The real historical context of Paul is the relationship between Jews and gentiles, and the extremely important 1st century issue of gentile believers in Jesus and law obedience. This article had a massive impact on New Testament studies, anticipating both the New Perspective and the Paul Within Judaism school, and I find his article extremely convincing and compelling. Llibert Tarragó, periodista, escritor, fundador de la editorial Tinta Blava y coautor junto a su padre, Joan Tarragó, de 'Stendhal en Mauthausen'. La historia de Joan, uno de los 7189 españoles que estuvieron en el campo de concentración de Mauthausen, la contó el mismo. Fue el preso 4355 de Mauthausen. Escribió sus memorias en las páginas en las que su hijo también relató cómo fue vivir con un superviviente para hacernos ver cómo el terror se hereda. Llibert ha recordado su infancia y lo débil que regresó su padre de Mauthausen, “había ambiente de angustia”. “The concept of limerence "provides a particular carving up of the semantic domain of love",[16] and represents an attempt at a scientific study of the nature of love.[17] Limerence is considered to be an emotional and motivational state,[9] attachment process[18][10] or even obsession.[11] It is typically experienced involuntarily[19] and is characterized by intrusive preoccupation[20][21] and a strong desire for reciprocation of one's feelings.[22][23] For Tennov, sexual desire is an essential aspect of limerence[24] but the desire for emotional commitment is greater.[25] The sexual desires of Tennov's interviewees were overshadowed by their desire for their beloved to contact them, invite them out and reciprocate their passion.[26] A central feature of limerence for Tennov was the fact that her participants really saw the object of their affection's personal flaws, but simply overlooked them or found them attractive.[27][28] Tennov calls this "crystallization", after a description by Stendhal in his 1821 treatise On Love.
