The famous Welsh poet RS Thomas is the subject of this month's Nothing But The Poem podcast. Anne Stevenson of the Listener describes Thomas as a religious poet who 'sees tragedy, not pathos, in the human condition' ... 'He is one of the rare poets writing today who never asks for pity.' 'Like the Welsh countryside he writes about, Thomas's poetry is often harsh and austere, written in plain, somber language, with a meditative quality.' - The Poetry Foundation Our resident podcast host Sam Tongue took an immersive dive into two RS Thomas poems: From The Farm and Reservoirs. Find out what Sam - and the Friends Of The SPL group - took from these poems in this Nothing But The Poem podcast.
In this episode of Dialogue Over Division, we welcome Anne Stevenson, a city councillor in Edmonton who is committed to building a city that serves all residents. Anne's academic background in international development, economics, and urban design has given her a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities in municipal governance. She has worked in the city's planning department, focusing on affordable housing solutions that meet the diverse needs of the community. While we may not always agree on every issue, we strongly believe in the importance of having open and respectful conversations to better understand each other and work towards common goals. Anne shares insights from her time on city council, discussing the importance of listening to constituents, fostering trust through transparency, and balancing competing priorities to create a more inclusive city. We also touch on jurisdictional challenges and the importance of collaborative efforts needed between different levels of government to address complex issues such as housing and healthcare. The conversation explores the role of civic engagement and the value of initiatives like town halls and community forums in encouraging meaningful dialogue. We reflect on how citizens can play an active role in shaping their communities and why voter engagement is essential for a vibrant democracy. Together, we emphasize the power of collaboration and the importance of understanding the interconnectedness of local, provincial, and federal responsibilities in creating effective solutions. To continue the conversation, we invite you to take on a challenge: reach out to someone—whether it's a neighbor, a colleague, or your elected representative—whom you don't always agree with. Engage in a respectful dialogue about the issues that matter most to you and explore ways to find common ground. Let's keep the conversation going and work together to build stronger communities. The Spirit Is Too Blunt An Instrument By Anne Stevenson
In episode two Laura McKenzie talks to Anne Stevenson, a major voice in British and American poetry. Born in Cambridge, UK, and brought up in New England, Stevenson lived a variously transatlantic life before settling in Co. Durham in the 1980s. Laura joined Anne in her home to talk about Durham’s shifting nature, and the different ways in which County and City have worked their way through her poetry. Anne Stevenson died in 2020.

If there’s one guest who is the most requested on the Model Health Show, it would be the lovely Anne Stevenson. Anne is my wife, my very best friend, and the Operations Manager for our business. Everything that I have accomplished would not be possible without her by my side. I’ve interviewed Anne here on the show before, so today we thought we’d try something a little different. On this episode, we’re turning the tables and Anne is interviewing me. I had no idea what to expect going into this interview, but Anne brought it big-time with her thought-provoking questions. (I think she might be the next Oprah). We’re covering my background, including my childhood and the important lessons I learned early in life. You’ll learn more about my experience recovering my health, and how it influenced my career. We’ll talk about relationships—from co-parenting, to working with your spouse on a daily basis. Additionally, we covered the topic of mindset, including developing a sense of calmness and confidence, and what it takes to find true fulfillment. We both put a lot of heart into this episode, we hope you find valuable insights to inspire you to transform your life. In this episode you’ll discover: The culture I grew up in, and how it set the stage for later health problems. What being biracial taught me about acceptance. The first person in my life who instilled the importance of education. How to decide to stop being aggressive and self-centered. My greatest inspirations in life. The experience that sparked my thirst for knowledge (and passion to help others). The importance of honoring your standards. What my morning routine looks like (and what I’ve learned about being flexible!) How to gracefully distance yourself from toxic relationships. The biggest lessons I’ve learned from co-parenting. My advice for couples who work together. Why changing your health actually means deciding to shift your identity. How to clean up your social media feeds, and set a standard in your home. The key to finding true fulfillment. Two life-changing lessons I’ve learned from The Model Health Show. The link between kindness and authenticity. How to get others on board with your vision. No one else can do your push-ups for you. This means that there is always an amount of personal responsibility and action you need to take to be a better version of yourself. Those are your arms, your lungs, and your chesticles you’re working doing those push-ups. But, in many ways, we share our hearts and minds with others. Your desire to be better for your kids could be the WHY behind your reps. Your drive to show your community what’s possible could be the WHY behind the choices you make at the dinner table each day. Our relationships drive us.... and they also devastate us. They give us the fuel we need to grow: the good, the bad, and the ugly. But I’m here to share with you today that you can have a lot more of the good, and a lot less of the ugly, if you realize how to approach your relationships with heart, intention, and a willingness to be better yourself. I’m in a pretty interesting place because I’ve been with my wife for almost 15 years, yet a lot of the time I feel like I just met her, and I’m overjoyed just to be around her. I don’t think there’s anything innately different about us… there was a phase when we pretty much wanted to avoid each other (insert laughing but serious here). But something changed… we DECIDED to work on us. Not just separately, we had plenty of personal development we were working on, but deciding to work on us together as a unit is what shifted everything. We’ll call it Together Development™ (that’s right… called dibs!). My guest today is the person who’s helped me to grow the most. She’s shown me through her actions, words, and being how to love, be loved, and be the best human that I can be. She’s the mastermind behind several successful businesses, she’s an inspiring speaker and force in so many people’s lives, she’s a devoted mother, giving friend, and a fox of a wife. Please enjoy this episode with the one and only, Anne Stevenson. In this episode you'll discover: Why some people mistakenly believe that once you get fit, the mission is over. How irritation can happen when your reality doesn’t match your identity. The difference between supporting someone’s growth and trying to change them. How external motivation can ignite your internal fire. How commitment and structure in the gym can transfer over to structure and execution throughout your life. Why being honest with yourself is critical for real success. How your personal dedication to health can be a huge influence on your family’s culture. Why you need to “make room” for relationships that match your mission. Why there’s a balance between challenging yourself and loving yourself. The #1 skill to develop to influence your family to improve along with you. How acceptance is a powerful tool for happiness. The two different types of people when it comes to motivation to achieve goals. Why it’s essential to take time out to solve conflicts with your significant (no matter what). Why exercise is a lifeline for parents. How to stand up in your role and step into your power. It Takes a Village Podcast - Motherhood | Marriage | All The Things
In this episode we talk about Tony Robbins' 6 core human needs and how implementing these impacted marriage. Overcoming irritations, learned to communicate more productively, taking differences and finding a way to make them work together as a couple and not just exist as two separate people in one house. And how she creates the beautiful family atmosphere they have in their home of freedom, fun and realness without being fake.
There’s a wonderful quote from Carl Jung that says, “The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.” Our deepest relationships transform us. And which direction that chemical reaction goes can make all of the difference in the world. You can end up with a beautiful reaction that breathes life into everyone who’s around it, or a not-so-good reaction that can smother everyone in the room. The thing is, we don’t have to sit idly by and just hope that things will mix well together. We can actually uncover which things work great together, and put them into action for ourselves! There will be nothing that impacts your life more than the quality of your most intimate relationship. Becoming a great “relationship chemist” will bring you more health, happiness, and success than you can even imagine. In this episode you'll discover: What the #1 most influential thing on your health actually is. What’s instinctual in a relationship and what’s not. What the 6 core human needs are. Why it’s important to find your partner’s #1 driving force. Why “you should just know” is a huge mistake in relationships. How curiosity can be healing for a relationship. Why modeling is critical to relationship success. Why compromising with your partner might not be the best idea. The importance of dating and how to ensure you have 1-on-1 time. How personal development plays a crucial role in development as a couple. What to do when you feel like your partner isn’t with you on your ideas. Why acknowledgement plays a critical role in the evolution of relationships. How health & fitness tie into a healthy, thriving relationship. What the 2 most important words in a relationship are. How to immediately find common ground when you’re in an argument with your partner. How to turn your relationship irritations into admirations. “Most people who meet my wife quickly conclude that she is remarkable. They are right about this. She is smart, funny and thoroughly charming. Often, after hearing her speak at some function or working with her on a project, people will approach me and say something to the effect of, you know, I think the world of you, but your wife, wow!” These words from President Barack Obama couldn't describe my experience any more perfectly. I've had the honor of helping to uplift and empower countless people, but when anyone gets a chance to meet my wife, they realize where all of the really good stuff is coming from. This woman is phenomenal. She's literally a breath of fresh air whenever you walk into a room that she's in. She's gorgeous, silly, loving and beyond intelligent. I seriously think I get smarter just by some weird osmosis from being around her. Now, let's be clear. She will tell you that she didn't get this way overnight. Sure many of these qualities were innately within her, but it was through self-work, introspection, making mistakes, and self-care that she was able to become the woman she is today. The self-work came from hitting the floor in so many situations in her life that she had to choose to raise her standards or stay glued firmly to the ground. The introspection was the hard work to look within and to see where her fears were at play, and the excuses that she had leaned on to justify not reaching her potential. Making mistakes came naturally as you employ the trial and success method to figure out what works for you as a unique individual with unique circumstances. The self-care is what enabled her to feel good, strong, beautiful, and capable of gracefully handling all of challenges that life throws your way. And all of this is a small piece of her story, but today you're going to learn far more and be able to glean some life-changing insights from her example. There is a balancing force within the universe that resides within all women. When a woman feels beautiful, appreciated, and strong within herself, unbounded miracles begin to happen around her. Diane Mariechild said, “A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform.” As men, we have to help create the conditions for the women in our lives to thrive. Because truly, nothing can give us more strength than the support of a woman who owns her real power. There are a lot of valuable insights here for all women and all men, all mom and all dads, and all people who want to do something exceptional in their lives. On top of that, we're sharing some tips our family uses to eat healthy with all of the busy stuff going on, so this episode is jam-packed with goodness. In this episode you'll discover: How the American fast food culture can be an addictive shock for foreigners. Why destiny can sometimes be found within the loving arms of a gym. How a cancer scare became a catalyst for change in our family's lives. What your body's "innate intelligence" has to do with healing. What triggered the shift in my career from working in a gym to helping people with chronic illnesses. Why doubt can sabotage the results in your healing. The weird reason that Anne makes the bed each morning (it works though!). What my wife's morning routine looks like. How Anne is able to switch gears between family, wife, and work roles so efficiently. What strategies Anne uses to feed the family healthy food with a busy lifestyle. What "back up plans" we have to eat the best food possible in a pinch. Items mentioned in this episode include: * Onnit.com/Model
In this episode of The Model Health Show we're discussing a topic that's absolutely critical in our world today. Child birth and pregnancy has gradually been shifting out of the hands of women and their families, and more into the hands of conventional medicine. Many people are shocked to find out that the U.S. has the second worst ranking in the entire developed world for infant death rate. It's time to put the power back in the hands of mothers to raise strong, healthy children, and it all begins with being informed. To help talk about this topic today, I've brought on a special guest who inspires me everyday, my beautiful wife Anne Stevenson. She's going to be sharing some incredible insights about having a healthy, safe pregnancy and child birth that you simply won't hear anywhere else. This is an amazing show in so many ways, and important for both women and men to hear. Whether you're expecting a child, not having kids for many years, or giving birth is far in your past, this information is vital for you to share with the people you care about. In this episode you'll discover: Why the Joint Commission is cracking down on C-sections and interventions during birth. How being born vaginally impacts the baby's immune system. Why your birthing process starts way before the day you give birth. How exercise is helpful to a successful labor and child birth. How to utilize exercise to improve the connection between mom and baby during pregnancy. What affirmative techniques can be used to help mom with her mental and emotional wellness. Why having supportive, knowledgeable people of natural child birth in your life is important. What a home birth labor and delivery is like (this is a unique step-by-step example). Why having more freedom to move around during labor is so significant. How consciously eliminating stressors during labor can be helpful. What the benefit of the birthing tub really is. Why going "primal" was so helpful in this birthing process. What the role of the father/partner is in the birthing process. The shocking number of labors that are induced in the U.S. and their impact on C-section rates. What the potential side effects of synthetic oxytocin are.
