On this week's episode, we attempt to explain the weirdo madness of the 1985 Rankin/Bass special The Life & Adventures of Santa Claus! Based on a story by "Wizard of Oz" author L. Frank Baum, this special features a council of immortal wood nymphs, an army of invisible trolls, and an elf that may or may not have inspired a character from The Legend of Zelda. Oh, and somewhere in all that there's the origin story of Santa Claus. Also in this week's show, we take some time to sample a few new holiday libations, break down what it means to be a Christmas movie, and share our pitches for The Christmas Chronicles 3! "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is an American children's novel written by author L. Frank Baum and illustrated by W. W. Denslow, originally published by the George M. Hill Company in May 1900. It has since seen several reprints, most often under the title The Wizard of Oz, which is the title of the popular 1902 Broadway musical adaptation as well as the iconic 1939 live-action film. The story chronicles the adventures of a young farm girl named Dorothy in the magical Land of Oz after she and her pet dog Toto are swept away from their home in Kansas by a cyclone. The book is one of the best-known stories in American literature and has been widely translated. The Library of Congress has declared it "America's greatest and best-loved homegrown fairytale." Its groundbreaking success, and that of the Broadway musical adapted from the novel led Baum to write thirteen additional Oz books that serve as official sequels to the first story." On May 30, 1879 the town of Irving, Kansas in the northeastern part of the state was a growing farm community with several hundred residents. Today, though Irving is a ghost town. On May 30, 1879, two tornadoes destroyed most of the town, leaving 19 dead and many more injured. Some residents left Irving, but the town was rebuilt, and new businesses arrived, allowing Irving to regain its prominence as a local agricultural center. During the summer of 1903, the Big Blue River flooded and destroyed homes, crops and bridges. The river threatened to do it again in 1908 but the townspeople were prepared and were able to keep the river within its banks. In 1910 the population was estimated at 403 and boasted "good banking facilities, a weekly newspaper, telegraph and express offices, grade schools, a public library, and churches. After plans for the construction of the Tuttle Creek Dam were announced, the population declined and many businesses, including the post office, closed. The townsite was abandoned in 1960 after the dam was constructed. The town fell victim to the ways of the weather on the great plans and what some would term – progress. Still the town lives on. It turns out that one of those who unfortunately died in the 1879 tornado was a young woman named Dorothy Gale, who was found without her shoes. Passing through the region just after the tornado was traveling salesman-turned-author L. Frank Baum. He would use the story to inspire him to write a book and the name of Dorothy would live on in his famous work, "The Wizard of Oz" Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Librarians Carrie Anderson and Sarah Lane join the podcast today to discuss their favorite books of 2019. Carrie's Books Furious Hours: Murder, Fraud, and the Last Trial of Harper Lee, by Casey Cep Carrie's review: Harper Lee fans will love how it delves into her psyche and the history of her writing life. There's a lot of interesting history here too, such as politics of the time in Alabama, and the history of life insurance. Cep tells all of this in a very engaging way. The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep, by H.G. Parry Carrie's review: This novel takes place in a world a lot like ours, except for one thing - certain people can bring characters out from books out into the real world. The result is a wonderful book that I recommend for bibliophiles of all types. It's full of wit and swashbuckling adventure, and it has real heart. Twenty-One Truths about Love, by Matthew Dicks Carrie's review: This book follows Daniel and Jill Mayrock. Daniel has just quit his job to open up a bookshop when they find out his wife Jill is pregnant. The book has a unique format - it's written from Dan's perspective through his lists. I loved this book. Books written in unusual formats can be gimmicky, but this one is not. It works really well for the story and it holds its own. Sarah's Books Bromance Book Club, by Lyssa Kay Adams Sarah's review: This was my favorite romance book of the year. It turns the romance genre on its head without talking away any of the heartfelt sentiment you want in a romance book. This book hits you in all the feels while still being realistic and down to earth. I loved hearing men talk about wooing one's wife through communication and emotional depth. Circe, by Madeline Miller Sarah's review: Technically this book was published in 2018, but Madeline Miller came to Des Moines as part of AViD in 2019, so I'm counting it. I listened to the audiobook; it is riveting and beautifully narrated. Finding Dorothy, by Elizabeth Letts Sarah's review: This book tells of the story of Maude Gage Baum, the real-life wife of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum. Though the book is fiction, Letts weaves nonfiction elements into her writing, creating a truly unique narrative. Finding Dorothy is an engrossing narrative about a little-known woman in history.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. The American author L. Frank Baum is known as one of the greatest fantasy authors of the twentieth century. His works included what some would call today young adult novels and stories in the same mold as Alice in Wonderland or The Wind in the Willows. His most famous novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, had thirteen sequels and also was the inspiration for the Victor Fleming classic 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz. After numerous attempts to make further adaptations, Disney took up the reigns with a property that in all ways seems to fit with their image. Released in March of 2013 was the Sam Ramie directed film, Oz the Great and Powerful, starring James Franco, Rachel Weiss, Mila Kumis, and Rachel Williams. Essentially the film is a prequel to the Victor Fleming film and shows how some of the major characters from that film became who they are. Back stories are filled while new characters are brought into context. With a huge opening weekend and a sequel already being mentioned, the universe created by L. Frank Baum may finally have arrived to stay. Dark Discussions talks about this new film and how it fits in with the Baum universe and the original Victor Fleming film. Discussions include your co-hosts opinions of the casting, the iconic takes on the witches, the special effects, and the screenplay. Walt Disney himself would be proud if he were still with us.
