Canada's Food Inflation Spikes, Investors & Innovators with Elysabeth Alfano, CEO of  VegTech™ Invest

The episode kicks off with breaking economic news: while Canada's overall inflation slowed to 2.3% in March, food inflation surged to a staggering 3.2%—a monthly jump not seen since 1983. Sylvain attributes the spike to Ottawa's counter-tariffs, rising ingredient costs, and shifting sourcing strategies as Canadian grocers de-Americanize their supply chains. This backdrop leads into a discussion on recent Caddle research indicating that 61% of Canadians are willing to pay more for local products—an unprecedented level of national loyalty that presents both opportunity and urgency for domestic producers.Listeners also get a sneak peek at the upcoming release of the Canadian Food Sentiment Index, sponsored by MNP, which shows growing trust in Canada's food industry. Michael and Sylvain then pivot to the controversial topic of GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, raising critical questions about childhood obesity, pharmaceutical influence, and the implications for food industry giants like Nestlé and Mondelez. The second half of the episode features Elysabeth Alfano, CEO of VegTech Invest and host of two sustainability-focused podcasts. Elysabeth unpacks how her ETF invests in publicly traded companies that are accelerating food systems transformation—emphasizing impact, liquidity, and innovation over startup hype. She shares candid takes on the realities of lab-grown meat, the risks of insect protein, and why countries like Singapore and Israel are leading the charge in food security and innovation.Elysabeth also weighs in on the role of policy, pointing to rising geopolitical instability and trade tensions—especially in the U.S.—as a catalyst for investment in food innovation. From precision fermentation to biosecurity risks, she outlines why now is the time for bold moves in food tech and ESG investing. With both news and expert insights, this episode offers a comprehensive look at the forces reshaping what we grow, invest in, and consume.About Elysabeth Elysabeth Alfano is the CEO of  VegTech™ Invest , the Advisor to a publicly traded Food Innovation ETF.  Run by sector experts, VegTech™ Invest drives capital to those companies innovating for a resilient, sustainable and less damaging food supply system through its educational tools and financial product. As digital tools evolve, companies must adopt new technologies while avoiding disruption and risk. How can organizations balance innovation with stability and strategic alignment? When managing IT transformation at the enterprise level, veteran technology executive Jon Harding recommends aligning tech initiatives with clear business outcomes rather than chasing the latest trends. This requires initiating early cross-functional collaboration in tech planning, focusing on change management, stakeholder buy-in, and long-term thinking. Kellogg Foundation - Rooted in Diversity Equity and Inclusion Since Inception In this episode our case study attention is focused on the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, a business rooted in diversity equity and inclusion since its inception. The organization has worked to continually advance its understanding of the barriers to equity and their impact on children and to evolve its programming to “remain innovative and responsive to the ever-changing needs of society.” Established in 1930 by breakfast cereal pioneer W.K. Kellogg, the foundation has had an eye on equity from the beginning. “While equity has been at the heart of the Kellogg Foundation's mission from the beginning, in 2007 the organization's leaders took the monumental step of explicitly committing the foundation to confront racial inequity as an element of our strategy to ensure every child can thrive. Today, the foundation's deeply rooted commitment to racial equity and healing grounds every aspect of our work.” — Dr. Khan Nedd, Board Chair

Trouble is, while its snack business was growing quickly, its cereal business was in decline. Last year, Kellogg's split in to two companies. Her firm spun off of the Kellogg Company last year to manage iconic brands like Pringles, Cheez-It, Pop-Tarts, Rice Krispies Treats, as well as breakfast cereal outside of the U.S. Those have been household names for a long time, but Charisse says that across the marketing world, it's easy to lose sight of the long term. "Marketers are missing the mark in terms of our communication strategy within the organization—as well as how we look at, measure, and think about immediate versus long-term business results or long-term brand equity," she says. "I feel like we, as a marketing community, have to get better at educating our organization, our CEOs, our CFOs, on what is the value of a click today, what is the value over the course of time, and what tradeoffs are we making here and why?" Today on Building Better CMOs, Charisse and MMA Global CEO Greg Stuart discuss all of that, as well as how to unlock the value of brand marketing, purposeful career pivots and getting to the C-suite, balancing hard truths with optimism, and more. Jury orders egg suppliers to pay $17.7 million in damages for price gouging in 2000s

A federal jury in Illinois ordered $17.7 million in damages—an amount tripled to more than $53 million under federal law—to several food manufacturing companies who had sued major egg producers over a conspiracy to limit the egg supply in the U.S. The jury ruled that the egg producers used various means to limit the domestic supply of eggs to increase the price of products during the 2000s. The time frame of the conspiracy was an issue throughout the case; jurors ultimately determined damages occurred between 2004 and 2008. The damages verdict was reached on December 1 in the Northern District of Illinois. According to federal antitrust law, the damages are automatically tripled, bringing the total to over $53 million. Court documents on the verdict were not readily available the evening of December 1, but statements from the manufacturers' attorney and one of the egg producers confirmed a total of about $17.7 million. “We are extremely grateful for the jury's service and findings,” Brandon Fox, an attorney representing the food manufacturers, said in a statement. “This was an important case for many reasons, and the jury's award recognizes its significance.” Court documents show that the defendants have denied the claims. The egg suppliers include the family company of its former Chair John Rust, who's running for the U.S. Senate in Indiana. In a written statement on the verdict, Rust said the jury's decision “will be appealed.” The jury found that the egg suppliers exported eggs abroad to reduce the overall supply in the domestic market, as well as limited the number of chickens through means including cage space, early slaughter, and flock reduction, court documents say. Food manufacturers joining as plaintiffs in the lawsuit against the egg producers are Kraft Foods Global, Inc., The Kellogg Company, General Mills, Inc., and Nestle USA, Inc. The jury found the egg suppliers who participated in the conspiracy were Cal-Maine Foods, Inc., United Egg Producers, Inc., United States Egg Marketers, Inc. and Rose Acre Farms, Inc., a southern Indiana-based company previously chaired by Rust.

We start season 3 digging deep into human values, while speculating on their evolved expression into the future, with futurist and Associate Professor at University of Houston's Foresight Program, Dr Andy Hines. Having authored a book on the topic of values, ConsumerShift, Andy shares how defining what a value is and how it is expressed by people with differing typologies, helps us perceive them as something less static and therefore shows us their potential evolution into the future. Jo and Andy discuss how values - an integral part of a person's identity (their purpose, needs, world views and beliefs) - are expressed in the real world, as directed by external pressures but also individual choices. Andy speculates how modern values, built on capitalism, competition and an obsession with accumulation, may evolve. Andy has been practicing futurism for over three decades and now teaches the skills of a futurist, but he has also applied it first hand during his time at Kellogg's and Dow Chemical. Through observing and projecting changes in the world, he explains why the science of futurism is fruitful, that more things have come true than not, but that we must align to the motion of change with patience, because contrary to popular thought, change happens slower than we think. -- To look outside, Andy speaks to different groups of people looking for diversity of thought; people who come at the world in a way that Andy doesn't. He says this can be done observationally, through reading a magazine you don't normally read, going on community boards you wouldn't normally engage in, but that it should be done with patience, over an extended period of time. By seeking out unique view points, Andy seeks to build a better understanding of people in sub-cultures outside his own. -- Dr. Andy Hines is Associate Professor and Program Coordinator for the University of Houston's Graduate Program in Foresight and is also speaking, workshopping, and consulting through his firm Hinesight. Scott Lindahl, VP Corporate Services & Chief Security Officer, at Kellogg Company sat down with me in a great conversation around his journey that led him to begin using this language and adopting the behavior of a corporate leader. Scott's journey entailed working in manufacturing, retail, financial services as well as a small security services firm. Along the way he studied how salespeople interacted with clients. And he found the best ones had a way of creating a conversation through the power of great questions. He adopted this as his career matured and, as a result, began to learn not only the business but also the personal and professional drivers of his corporate customers. This approach became the framework that guided his own behavior and those that worked under him. He would call this “freedom within a framework” With this basic understanding of his journey, we then began to talk about the future. Leaders in every part of an organization are dealing with the same macro and micro issues. The speed of change is accelerating and impacting the way we get things done. Technology, in many cases, is acting as the lever. Scott believes that one of the keys is how to see the whole picture. This will naturally lead us to better ways of gathering and harnessing information that is critical to our organization's risk and opportunity. If CSO's do this well, they can help the CEO and their executive team navigate the road ahead. Enjoy the conversation.

Join us as we speak to her about how she recently made history through a first-of-its-kind plant-based ETF, what investing in a plant-based future means for the stock market, and impact investing.  “Our current [food] system is inefficient. If we used our resources better, we could address the problem at hand. And that problem is that we are tasked with making more food that is more nutritious, in a shorter amount of time, using fewer resources, that cause less harm. We have to make that implementation now.” - Elysabeth Alfano   What we discussed:  What an ETF is and how history was made recently through the world's first plant-based ETF  How inflation affects plant-based products  Why investing in plant-based is the future and what that means for the stock market Elysabeth's journey to veganism  What is impact investing and can the average person do it?  What to know about the label “plant-based” when it comes to investing  Why shipping live and dead animals is cruel and a bad business equation  What big companies are moving in plant-based directions   Resources: Connect with Elysabeth on LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/elysabeth-alfano-8b370b7/ Listen to the Plant-Based Business Hour - https://elysabethalfano.com/plantbased-business-podcasts/   Connect with Switch4Good   YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ2toqAmlQpwR1HDF_KKfGg   Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Switch4Good/   Podcast Chat Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/podcastchat/   Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/switch4good/   Twitter - https://mobile.twitter.com/Switch4GoodNFT   Website - https://switch4good.org/   Use code SWITCH for 25% off your order at MaxinesHeavenly.com   Click on this link to download the abillion app - https://abillion.onelink.me/42TD/switch4good

He also teaches both undergraduate and graduate-level courses concentrated on interpersonal leadership development, organizational leadership and advanced leadership theory. Leadership Journey Liked the idea of human behavior and leadership; From PA, went to NYC, got his PhD from Gonzaga; Wilkes U right out of his PhD; was recruited to come down to Florida to teach other PhDs on humility In the book, talks a lot about being present. The XFactor example of humility and how the singer's lack of humility played a role in the discussion with his daughter. Jim Collins - humility and determination is what we need to move from good to great. …companies like the Kellogg Company, Tinder, Kronos, E. & J. Gallo Winery, World Wide Technology, and Teach For America are just a few other successful companies that have committed to “humility” as a core organizational value. (from Matt's research) Humility as a mindset We are incomplete until we take our last breath …and where is it “taught” in the curriculum? Humility allows you to take risks. Why isn't humility at the front and center? Possible western culture of winning versus introspection. What top two skills do you recommend that new educational leaders need to have at the ready? Questions and action in the book will provide guidance. Go back to humbling yourself. Our perspective is just one POV. Grow from your mistakes. We need each other. The Undercover Boss is a great example to observe without limits. Ask, How do they need me? Collective humility as an organization.
