“Why am I such a misfit? I am not just a nitwit. You can't fire me, I quit! Seems I don't fit in.” It's a Rankin/Bass “Animagic” Christmas Spectacular here at Movies That Made Us Gay, and we watched “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “The Year Without a Santa Claus,” “The Life & Adventures of Santa Claus,” and “Nestor, the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey” with our friend Harper Thomson and we still want to visit the island of misfit toys. These charming stop-motion animation TV specials from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s have been airing for as long as any of us can remember, and it's just not the holidays until we watch at least one of them. What little queer child didn't feel seen as Rudolph was banished from gym class and made to hide his light? Little Hermey the elf just not feeling his 9-to-5 job making toys really speaks to the Gen Z in all of us, and are you even queer if you don't shed a tear when that raggedy doll sings her song on the island of misfit toys? All that and a ginger daddy/bear who loves dogs (and peppermint), and it almost seems as though this was made for and by the gays. There was just something in the sauce Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass were churning because each of these specials just tugs at your heartstrings and makes the little queer kid inside us weep, laugh, and light up. Oh, and the Heat & Snow Miser's songs are high camp, burlesque magic. You can send me messages(this is new!)!Man, I loved this conversation with Carrie Hoffman of Bigger Life Adventures! I was sold with sustainable travel, but this conversation is SO much more- Carrie lives the sustainable lifestyle - She lives on 10 acres in the mountains of Arizona! You can probably hear (and hopefully can tune out) the crackly sound, but she lives out in the open and that's our reality - if you can let go of that sound, you'll get her important messageAs a Trauma Informed Yoga Instructor, Carrie takes her role very seriously. She takes her retreats all over the world, to inspiring, peaceful and SLOW paces, to let the body calm and remember what peace feels like.A part that really stood out for me was that she goes to some of the same places; they form relationships with the residents, and support them as well - not overwhelming them with thousands of tourists - it's more than just money, after all. She talks about the amount of litter left after cruise ships leave. She is very mindful of so many things . I loved this message that Carrie was hoping you would gather from our conversation:"Yoga is more than just a physical exercise you do in a studio. Being a yoga means being aware of your impacts on others and the world around you."And also this: "I use travel as a way to open people's eyes to climate change and global inequity ..."This is a big conversation, and I absolutely loved it. I love any chance to learn how to be a better human, and Carrie does just that. You can find Carrie at her website http://www.biggerlifeadventures.comShe's also on the socials here https://www.instagram.com/biggerlifeadventures/ and here https://www.facebook.com/biggerlifeadventuresSupport the Show. Please follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there, post, or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com. A Note from James:Today, we have a remarkable guest, John Mackey, the founder of Whole Foods. Whole Foods is my go-to place for groceries, whether I'm shopping in-store or ordering via Instacart. John's story is fascinating. He started as a young, hippie-ish guy living in a commune and working in a food co-op. One day, he thought, "Hey, I could do this," and opened his first store, Saferway, humorously named to poke fun at Safeway. Over time, this venture grew into the massive empire we now know as Whole Foods, which was eventually acquired by Amazon.John's journey is detailed in his new book, which captures the ups and downs of being an entrepreneur. Despite his seemingly hippie background, John evolved into an ardent capitalist, recognizing that innovation thrives on the competition capitalism inspires. In our conversation, we delve into how he evolved over the decades and the invaluable advice he shared with me.So, here's John Mackey with the whole story: adventures in love, life, and capitalism.Episode Description:In this episode, James Altucher welcomes John Mackey, co-founder of Whole Foods Market. John shares his inspiring journey from a young man living in a commune to building one of the most successful grocery chains in the world. This conversation offers a unique perspective on entrepreneurship, competition, and personal growth. John reveals his transition from a "hippie-ish" background to embracing capitalism, discussing how competition fuels innovation. Listeners will gain insights into John's entrepreneurial spirit, his experiences with Whole Foods' expansion, and the personal challenges he faced along the way. This episode is a treasure trove of wisdom for anyone interested in business, personal development, and the philosophy of conscious capitalism. What You'll Learn:The Origin Story: How John Mackey's journey from a commune and food co-op led to the creation of Whole Foods.Entrepreneurial Insights: The transition from hippie to capitalist and how competition drives innovation.Cultural Integrity: The importance of maintaining a healthy company culture during rapid growth.Resilience in Business: How setbacks and failures can be opportunities for learning and growth.Future of Retail: John's thoughts on the future of retail and holistic health with his new venture, Love Life.Chapters:00:01:30 - Introduction to John Mackey00:03:07 - Whole Foods Market headquarters and remote work trends00:04:22 - John Mackey's departure from Amazon and thoughts on company culture00:06:32 - Love Life: John's new venture and its holistic approach00:10:04 - Rebuilding after setbacks: The flood and the importance of resilience00:13:32 - The importance of culture in business growth and sustainability00:19:41 - Analogies between company culture and personal culture00:27:15 - Challenges and lessons from early partnership conflicts00:30:38 - The impact of personal relationships on business00:41:52 - Expansion instincts and entrepreneurial foresight00:46:53 - Current economic perspectives and the future of capitalism00:51:23 - Optimism, creativity, and the role of innovation00:58:22 - Recommended reads for understanding progress and optimism01:08:41 - Managing fear and focusing on personal contributions01:09:31 - Conclusion and John's new venture, Love LifeAdditional Resources:The Whole Story: Adventures in Love, Life, and Capitalism by John MackeyEnlightenment Now by Steven PinkerSuperabundance by Marian TupyCapitalist Manifesto by Johan NorbergThe Rational Optimist by Matt Ridley ------------What do YOU think of the show? I got to spend a lunch break with the digital creator- Jeremy Jacobowitz. Jeremy started and created the IG Brunch Boys account and has evolved it to being all about his food and life adventures all over the World! (plus anything else on his mind). He is an Influencer, Director, Host, and avid baseball cap collector. I spoke to Jeremy about how he started and came up with the idea of Brunch Boys. We discussed how he evolved his social media into a personal brand allowing him to work with sponsors and having it become his full-time job and business. We spoke about how he started in TV and how he uses that to create content. Jeremy provided tips and suggestions when creating content, as well as, posting on social like IG and Tik Tok. He also shared what he learned from his time working with Bobby Flay as his PA. It was great chatting with Jeremy because I am one of his 438K followers and love what he has created for himself and the content he is sharing.
