EPISODE 84 - “THE MAKING OF MAGIC: BEHIND THE SCENES ON THE WIZARD OF OZ - PART 1” - 4/21/2025 Perhaps one of the most beloved movies of all time, the MGM classic The Wizard of Oz debuted in that magical year of 1939. Based on the popular children's books by Frank L. Baum, it tells the story of a Kansas farm girl, Dorothy Gale, who, along with her devoted dog Toto, is transported to the magical land of Oz. This beloved classic has become such a touchstone in pop culture that phrases like “There's no place like home,” “Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore,” and “I'll get you, my pretty” have entered our collective lexicon. This week, we offer the first of a two part episode that explores the making of this MGM classic film.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Adapting The Wizard of Oz: Musical Versions From Baum to MGM and Beyond (2019), by Danielle Burkett & Dominic McHugh; The Wizard of Oz FAQ: All that's Left to Know About Life According to Oz (2014), by David J. Not sure how I did an episode talking about my favorite films without mentioning it, but that appears to be what happened. Who Framed Roger Rabbit was a massive inspiration to me! It captured my imagination in a way that nothing had up to that point, and nothing has up to this point in my life. To this day I still watch it and forget that Bob Hoskins and Christopher Lloyd aren't actually acting with cartoons. A look at the music that influenced me.There's so much music that I love that wasn't mentioned here! Here's a few more artists and albums that mean a lot to me!Soen, a band very similar to Tool. Complex rhythms, inspirational lyrics, and all around beautiful. Our Lady Peace - Starseed: an excellent album full of powerful anthems and heartfelt tracks.Harvey Danger - Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone: A surprisingly emotional rock album about living through loss, loneliness, trauma, and turmoil. If all you've ever heard was Flagpole Sitta, you're missing out, because the rest of the album has much more depth... And a song about the Hitchcock classic Vertigo.Yonaka - An artist with truly powerful and emotional vocals and lyrics.Troi Irons - An incredible artist with an incredible voice and a lot of sincerity and compassion. Grandson - An artist with a lot on his mind. Most of his music is centered around political outrage and social justice issues... So... You know, your mileage may vary. But I love his music.I could go on and on and on, but that's enough for now.Find the unofficial soundtracks of Dark Days and Dark[er] Days of Dorothy Gale on Spotify.Dark Days of Dorothy Gale (unofficial) Soundtrackhttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/5bjCrgTamdm0RxhyOYvsdf?si=AszR3_bMSf2DEAD4nYU-4g&pi=06jh8mD3RiC6CDark[er] Days of Dorothy Gale (unofficial) Soundtrackhttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/1bBSq3QXP618HZHGwmwymT?si=c20i6btbQ_-HNA26r3n7rg&pi=o6ZlsklzQYyZKThe Grand Storyteller Playlist (both epic playlists combined)https://open.spotify.com/playlist/05HorkPnZ5tor1AiCBvVMn?si=pxopRZswQf2vQ8BewGxKWg&pi=1kTg0-XmTGi_-You can find me on TikTok: @DarkDorothyG You can contact me at DarkDaysOfDorothyGale@outlook.comYou can find even more on my other TikTok, and Instagram accounts under the alias @TheOrdinarySun If social media isn't your jam, check out the official website! https://www.DDofDG.com I'm not doing this to make money, and I'm not asking for any. Wicked (titled onscreen as Wicked: Part I) is a 2024 American musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, with songs by Stephen Schwartz. It is the first of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name by Schwartz and Holzman, which was loosely based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, which in turn is based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, its sequels and its 1939 film adaptation. The film covers the musical's first act. It stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp and Ariana Grande-Butera[b] as Galinda Upland. Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum are featured in supporting roles. Set in the Land of Oz, mostly before Dorothy Gale's arrival from Kansas, it follows Elphaba as she embarks on her path to becoming the Wicked Witch of the West, and chronicles her friendship with her classmate Galinda, who becomes Glinda the Good. Universal Pictures and Marc Platt, who both produced the stage musical, announced the film adaptation in 2012. After a long development and multiple delays, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Chu was hired to direct, with Erivo and Grande cast in 2021. The film was split into two to avoid cutting plot points and expand the characters' journeys and relationships. Principal photography began in England in December 2022, was interrupted in July 2023 by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, and was resumed and completed in January 2024. Wicked premiered at the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia, on November 3, 2024, and was theatrically released in the United States on November 22. It received positive reviews and has grossed $360.3 million worldwide on a $150 million budget. Wicked Part Two is scheduled for release on November 21, 2025.

Nick and Sophia, along with special returning guests Connor and Dylan MacDowell from the DRAMA. podcast start by discussing their relationships with the stage musical and how that informed their first viewings of the new film. Then, they dive into their thoughts on the casting, including some favorites from the stage musicals, before highlighting Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and Jonathan Bailey, amongst many others (32:28). How do they feel about their singing live on set? They debate if comparisons to other series, remakes or two-parters, like Dune, Harry Potter or West Side Story, are valid. Wicked gives us the secret origin of the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz. We dive a little deeper into what makes her so unique.Wicked is shaping up to be one of the biggest cinematic hits of the holiday season this year, following on from its wild success first as a bestselling novel and then as an even more successful Broadway musical. Is there the equivalent of an EGOT for adapted properties? Because if so, Wicked just needs a video game or something to qualify. At the heart of Wicked, however, is the sympathetic origin story of the formerly nameless Wicked Witch of the West from the classic Wizard of Oz story. Given both a name and a significant backstory in Wicked, we learn that her trademark green skin wasn't the manifestation of some inner character flaw, but rather a somewhat magical mishap brought about by her mother consuming a potion while pregnant with the future villainess. We admit that delving into the realm of pure magic on Does it Fly? has occasionally proven difficult, but in the case of Elphaba, there's something to the question of just how green a person can get, and the possible causes.Watch the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here or check it out on our YouTube page to learn more. FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Book Learnin' Wicked is first based on Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, which also spawned the sequels Son of a Witch, A Lion Among Men, and Out of Oz.Of course, all of this goes back to L. Frank Baum's original children's novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. But did you know that book had a whopping thirteen sequels? Oz mythology is vast! The Evolution of Skin Color in HumansMelanin is what gives everyone their skin color, and understanding how and why various skin tones evolved is the foundation of our discussion about the (potential) science of green skin. Read more here.Don't Turn Green! As a quick PSA, here's a guide to how you can keep any copper oxide in jewelry from giving your skin that (lovely?) Oz-like green tint. When People Actually Turned GreenHypochromic anemia, or chlorosis, was a condition that did indeed leave some folks with green-ish skin. We usually try to do a little  better than just Wikipedia links in these notes, but because chlorosis isn't really an issue these days, there's not a ton of contemporary writing about it. So start with this Wikipedia entry, and if you want to dig deeper there are two scientific journal articles you can try to access here and here. There will be a quiz next week! (not really)ThalidomideSince the origin of the Wicked Witch's green skin begins with her mom drinking a potion, an example Hakeem cites in this episode is the tragedy surrounding use of Thalidomide during the mid-20th century, in which expectant mothers took a drug that was supposed to help with morning sickness and instead caused severe physical issues with their babies. A full history can be found here, but please beware of disturbing imagery.SUGGESTED VIEWING Oz-related screen adaptations are pretty much too numerous to list, and too varied in quality to really get into in the space we have here. But here are the ones we recommend…The Wizard of Oz (1939)MGM's 1939 musical classic is rightfully the most inescapable, culturally dominant version of the Oz mythos ever put on screen. It's also the most beloved. Almost impossible to imagine anyone reading this isn't aware of it in some capacity. The Wiz (1978)Sydney Lumet and Joel Schumacher's screen adaptation of the stage play which updated the Oz story for a more modern audience features a cast that includes no less than Diana Ross as Dorothy Gale, Richard Pryor (!) as the Wiz, and the legendary Lena Horne as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.Return to Oz (1985)Long before taking the lead role in The Craft, Fairuza Balk took her turn as Dorothy Gale in a movie that, while essentially a sequel to the 1939 film, is actually more frightening and disturbing than The Craft! Absolutely worth your time.Wicked Part I (2024)Director Jon M. Chu's anticipated adaptation of the book and Broadway musical boasts an absurdly all-star cast including Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Galinda, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, Michelle Yeoh, Peter Dinklage, and more! WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?For some darker fantasy realm stuff, check out our episode on Netflix's The Witcher right here!FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! Sean Comer and Mark Radulich review movies currently on streaming services and in theaters: Stan and Ollie/Chaplin/Judy Movie Review! First up is Stan and Ollie (2018). Then we move on to Chaplin (1992). Finally we review Judy (2019).Stan & Ollie is a 2018 biographical comedy-drama film directed by Jon S. Baird. The script, written by Jeff Pope, was inspired by Laurel and Hardy: The British Tours by A.J. Marriot which chronicled the later years of the comedy double act Laurel and Hardy; the film stars Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly as Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. The film focuses on details of the comedy duo's personal relationship while relating how they embarked on a gruelling music hall tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland during 1953 and struggled to get another film made. The film premiered on 21 October 2018 at the closing night gala of the BFI London Film Festival. It was released in the United States on 28 December 2018 and in the United Kingdom on 11 January 2019. At the 76th Golden Globe Awards, Reilly was nominated for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and at the 72nd British Academy Film Awards the film earned three nominations, including Best British Film and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Coogan.Chaplin is a 1992 biographical comedy-drama film about the life of English comic actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin. It was produced and directed by Richard Attenborough and stars Robert Downey Jr., Marisa Tomei, Dan Aykroyd, Penelope Ann Miller and Kevin Kline. It also features Charlie Chaplin's own daughter, Geraldine Chaplin, in the role of his mother, Hannah Chaplin. The film underperformed at the box office, grossing $12 million against a $31 million budget, and received mixed reviews from critics; Downey's titular performance, however, garnered critical acclaim and won him the BAFTA Award for Best Actor along with nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actor and Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama.Judy is a 2019 biographical drama film based on the life of American entertainer Judy Garland. Directed by Rupert Goold, it is an adaptation of the Olivier- and Tony-nominated West End and Broadway play End of the Rainbow by Peter Quilter. The film stars Renée Zellweger, Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock, Rufus Sewell, and Michael Gambon. The film follows Garland's career during the last year of her life, when she relocated her stage career to England, coupled with flashbacks of her childhood, most prominently the shooting of her part as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz (1939), her most famous film role. After some initial success in a run of sell-out concerts at the Talk of the Town in London, her efforts eventually stop making progress and even start to worsen as her health deteriorates.Judy premiered at the 46th Telluride Film Festival on 30 August 2019, and was released in the United States on 27 September 2019, and in the United Kingdom on 2 October 2019. The film received generally positive reviews, with Zellweger's performance garnering widespread acclaim. For her portrayal of Garland, Zellweger won the Academy Award for Best Actress, as well as the Golden Globe Award, SAG Award, BAFTA Award and Critics' Choice Movie Award.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Frank Baum's early 20th century Oz novels, mainly The Marvelous Land of Oz (1904) and Ozma of Oz (1907).  If you have anything to add to the discussion, please don't hesitate to do so by reaching out to us on social media @TheFilmFlamers, or call our hotline and leave us a message at 972-666-7733!            Watch Return to Oz: https://amzn.to/49kJSkD         Out this Month: Week 1: Shooting the Flames Week 2: The Wizard of Oz Week 3: Return to Oz Patreon: Gateway Horror Poll!     Coming in December 2023: The Green Knight Rare Exports      Get in Touch:  Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/TheFilmFlamers  Visit our Store: https://teespring.com/stores/thefilmflamers  Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheFilmFlamers  TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thefilmflamers  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheFilmFlamers/ Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/thefilmflamers/ Our Website: https://www.filmflamers.com  Call our Hotline: 972-666-7733     Our Patrons:    #ExiledTexan Alex Mendoza Anthony Criswell Ashlie Thornbury BattleBurrito BelleBeignet Benjamin Gonzalez Bennett Hunter Big Dave Bonnie Jay BreakfastChainsawMassacre Call me Lestat.
